Re: [MacGroup] Dead Printer

2019-12-16 Thread William Micou
I signed up for HP’s printer ink program more than a year ago and I love it! I
have saved so much money on buying ink cartridges. If you don’t print that much
it’s perfect for you. There are certain HP printers that qualify for the
program. Mine is a printer/ scanner. You sign up for how many pages you think
you will print in a month. The printer is connected to the cloud and the page
count is monitored. I pay $4.99 per month and I can print 100 pages. If I go
over 100, I pay so many cents per page over. Since my ink level is also
monitored, they send free ink when it gets low. I would highly recommend this.

Re: [MacGroup] Any way to know what apps will cost?

Usually, somewhere on the App Store page with the description of the app you
are considering, it shows over on the side, ‘subscription available’ or
something like that. I think I heard that Apple is trying to crack down on
developers not disclosing the prices. Hopefully, we’ll have a clearer picture
of what we might get.

[MacGroup] New e-mails looking like read

2019-03-05 Thread William Micou
Normally, the list of new unread emails will each have a blue dot showing me
their status as unread. However, sometimes I’ll see new email with no dot. They
are often from a service like ‘constant contact’, or a mailing list, but why
are they appearing as read? I can’t determine (as I write this) what email
address I’m getting them from. Is the blue dot Apple Mail specific? I’ll try to
monitor where they are coming from later.
Thanks for the help as always.

[MacGroup] Need help with cord cutting (tv/ cable)

2018-09-09 Thread William Micou
Not really Mac, Apple, computer related, but other than asking the reddit
group, I trust this group and most of you are local, so maybe someone here can
help guide me.
Currently have AT U-verse and do not like it.
And have Apple TV (2nd gen), and a Sony 4K smart tv.
I use Amazon Prime video service, and Netflix

What I want - I think - is:
1. have a dependable internet service.
2. Have OTA (over the air) antenna.
3. Be able to record shows/ movies, and sports.
4. Want to use 2 TVs. One is definitely a smart tv.

Considering
Best Buys’ - ClearStream-4MAX-Indoor/Outdoor-HDTV-Antenna,
SiliconDust HDHomeRun - CONNECT QUATRO Tuner,
or
Tivo product (always liked Tivo in the good old days!)
or
Tablotv product (this one has some promising features)

Those of you that have made the change from cable, can you guide me into the
light?

Thanks advance for your input and suggestions.

My buddy & I had FitBit battles (before we both went with Apple Watches). He
would always beat me in number of steps every day. His job was stocking shelves
at a grocery, but the FitBit counted those movements as steps! I even tried to
beat his numbers by strapping the FitBit to an electric drill and let it whirl
around for a while. I still lost! Now with our Apple Watches, our steps are
similar.

I’m sure you would have thought of this, but are there still programs that
emulate a vitual Window machine? What were those - Boot Camp? VM Ware? I
haven’t heard or read much about those lately.

Re: [MacGroup] The Wagon Still Rolls

2018-04-10 Thread William Micou
Been following this discussion -
Ready to cut the AT UVerse cord and just use Apple TV, HD antenna, and some
kind of a HD digital recorder. My question (one of many at this point) is - I
only need a internet provider now, what is my best value in the Louisville
area? Used to have IgLou and loved everything about them, especially the fact
that they are local. What do you all say?
Thanks,

Re: [MacGroup] time machine backups

2017-12-14 Thread William Micou
Found my answer:
When you enter Time Machine, a timeline appears on the right side of the
screen. Each dated tick mark in the timeline is a backup, and each backup has a
color when you move the pointer over it.
macOS High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, or Yosemite:
A bright red tick mark is a backup that can be restored now, either from a
local snapshot or your backup drive. When your backup drive isn't available,
only the local snapshots are bright red.
A dimmed red tick mark is a backup that can be restored from your backup drive
after that drive becomes available. Until then, the stack of windows on the
screen shows a blank window for that backup.
OS X Mavericks or earlier:
A gray tick mark is a backup that can be restored now from a local snapshot.
A bright pink tick mark is a backup that can be restored now from your backup
drive.
A dimmed pink tick mark is a backup that can be restored from your backup drive
after that drive becomes available. Until then, the stack of windows on the
screen shows a blank window for that backup.
So red is good.

[MacGroup] time machine backups

2017-12-13 Thread William Micou
I use an Airport Time Capsule for my Time Machine backups. When you ‘enter time
machine’, and the screen of your backups show with the time line along the far
right side, should the bars on each date appear in green or red?
Mine are in red and I don’t think that means “OK”.

(I’ve never 100% trusted time machine, and also clone my system with

Spoke with a financial consultant yesterday and during the conversation, he
mentioned his family uses it and thought it to be worth it. He had an
interestingly idea about his pre-teen kids. He has Life-Lock for them because
their Social Security numbers could be comprised for years before the parents
ever catch it - maybe from birth to college.

One of my regular podcasts discussed this exact problem. They highlighted how a

[MacGroup] Map app - new bridge

2017-03-11 Thread William Micou
Your question about map apps made me want to ask if anyone has traveled over
the new bridge in Louisville (Lewis & Clark bridge) using travel directions on
the iPhone? Is the app updated to include the new bridge? I checked the Apple
map on my laptop and the bridge is not there. I asked for directions to an
address directly over the bridge and it routed me downtown. Wonder how long
before it gets added.

Dan-
Do the calendars show up in the sidebar? If so, click or control-click on one
and get control of its actions.
If they don’t, are they calendars with links to a google account, or yahoo
account? or M$ Office suite? Maybe you can look at any of those connections and
determine if the settings are flooring your system with repeat events.
I googled ‘Turn Off ICS Sharing

with some ideas you might want to try.
Good luck.

Anne,
In the Photo app, top of page where menu bar is, go to ‘view’; one of the
selections is ‘hide face names’ (or ‘show face names’). You can toggle that to
be on or off. I too get ignored when it asks me to name the rock or tree bark.
Maybe it is seeing ‘shadow people’?

Re: [MacGroup] Maps, Maps Maps, everywhere

2016-10-11 Thread William Micou

To all -

As bicyclist and a soon-to-be motorcyclist, please let your passenger handle
the phone when driving, or use Siri and hands free. WAZE is a great driving
tool but even if you have the new 7 plus, that's an awful small screen to have
to study and determine where you should go. Just be careful.

Got rid of my Magellan GPS. I use the WAZE app. It also gives you alternate

side of the road, and police. WAZE then alerts you as you approach these
events. If the car on the side of the road has gone, you tell WAZE and it will
remove the notice so other users don’t get it.

You can also search for restaurants you like.

It is continually updated with route changes like the reconfiguration of
Spaghetti Junction.

It’s a free app.

Traveled to Florida and back, using Maps on the Jeep, a Garmin stand alone GPS
and the iPhone.

I updated the Garmin, new firmware and new maps.

The Jeep update was close to $600.00, at those prices of the maps will remain
the 2014 vintage.

The iPhone is always updated, just upgraded to iOS 10.0.2

We are ready, lets hit the road….

I’ll try to keep this short but the results were humorous ….

The Jeep would give me one distance and tell me to turn left, the Garmin would
give me another distance and tell me to turn right, the iPhone would tell me
yet a third distance and tell me to go straight…

I learned that the Garmin and the Jeep were more sensitive to small road
changes, thus the differences, so if a road would split from my road they would
tell me miles in advance to be sure and take the main road, the iPhone knew I
was an Apple Geek and could figure these things out…stay on my road until she
said to turn…and boy with the new update on the Apple Watch the physical turns
really shake your arm, so if the phone is in the console I don’t even have to
look at it, with Siri’s voice and the watch beating up on my wrist I knew when
I was to turn or had arrived at my destination.

One caveat for the Jeep and the iPhone. In parts of Alabama the folks think a Cell
Tower is a place of incarceration of solitude high off the ground….my AT cell
phone and my wife’s Verizon Cell neither had service for miles…so now the reason
for the Garmin GPS which uses Satellite….I was still connected…

The iPhone was marvelous, not missing a beat and I also learned what most of
you may already know…about time to eat, we tried to have lunch at Panera Bread
where possible…so going along with the map doing it’s thing we ask Siri where
is the nearest Panera Bread…she brings to screens the closest….touch it and now
a NEW map appears, I can dismiss it or allow her to take me to lunch….If I
don’t want the one she suggest I wait and she goes back to the original map.

When finished eating we are back to the original map and puttering along with
our Captain in charge of getting us where we want to go.

While in Destin wanting to go to a restaurant or whatever most sites when you
click on “map” it takes me to Google Maps, and I wait and wait for it to
load…..wish Apple could fix the default from these sites to Apple Map so I copy
the address and enter into Apple Maps and instantly they load and never miss my
destination.

I also listen to books as I drive and the book pauses when Siri wants to tell
me something, maybe it’s the Bose earbuds but the Siri voice sure sounds much
younger, personal and quite lovely…I was starting to need more conversation
with this lady, she was very soothing….

Finally, Siri would come on and say that 25 miles ahead there was a traffic
jam, if I took the route she suggested I would save 25 minutes…really? Was this
old data? Was it real? This had NEVER happened before so I didn’t listen to her
and sat in traffic at least 2 hours…on the two different occasions that were
traffic jams…oh, will I learn?

It’s been awhile since I have revisited Maps, I thought this might help someone
on the list…you never know.

Re: [MacGroup] iPhone calendar issue

2016-05-22 Thread William Micou
Check
settings-
Mail, Contacts, Calendars-
scroll down to calendar settings, and look for the ‘sync’ setting,
there are choices, 'sync events 2 weeks back, 1 month back, 3 months back, 6
months back, all events’
I don’t know if that will solve your issue, but that may be a factor.

Good luck,
Bill

[MacGroup] iPhone calendar issue

2016-05-22 Thread William Micou
Wife & I have iPhones, her's is the new 6s, and mine is a 5s. Her OS is 9.3.1,
mine is 9.3.2. We use iCloud, have a Time Machine for backup. We both have lost
calendar events for most of 2016. They are still showing on my MacBook under
the calendar ‘Home’ and is my main Mac account and it’s settings have it
sharing with her Mac account. Looks like events in 2015 are still there, but
2016 is wiped clean. Odd and scary.
Anyone else having a problem with calendars and iPhones? I didn’t see
anything under Apple support.
Don’t know if this is related - we went out of town today - just to Henderson,
KY. Realized it was an issue when we returned to Louisville and checked
calendars. Have rebooted both phones and no difference.
Thanks for your time,
Bill

I agree. I stopped listening to his podcasts long ago. It always seemed like he
was too big on himself and like to hear himself talk. His early shows, Tech TV
was great and I learned a lot from him, but he changed. IMHO.

I, for one, would like you to immediate reconsider your resolution! I always
learn something from your postings and to think I might have to have fewer of
them, causes me concern.
If the mood strikes, please post any and all without hesitation. Now as far as
the other groups you are affiliated with… maybe they don’t appreciate you as
much as we do and therefore, feel free to limit your contributions to those
ingrates.

Happy New Year! and keep ‘em coming!

It might be must less sinister. It may have been more human nature. Maybe an
employee of ADT, or if the alarm notified the fire or police, an employee if
those agencies, has a side job of finding leads for ADT's many competitors.
I don't know that this happens, but it might.

[MacGroup] using external HD with virtual windows on Mac

2015-09-22 Thread William Micou

Do any of you use Boot Camp or Parallels on your Mac and have an external hard
drive hooked up for use on the Windows side?
My wife has a Mac Book Pro with VM Ware Fusion software that does the same
thing as Boot Camp or Parallels. We bought a USB external HD and her main use
of the HD will be to use it for office files that have to be Windows based.
Whenever it was plugged in to the MBP,  I could see it in Finder on the Mac
side, but when I went to the Windows screens, it wouldn't show. Any
suggestions? There may be a download I need from the VM Ware site, but after
downloading it, I couldn't get it to load.
Thanks,
Bill

I think that's so cool! I have the Nest thermostat and love it. It came in
handy today. My old AC has a leak somewhere, have to have it recharged every
season, and noticed today it wasn't cooling very well. Called service guy and
he said turn it all off. Instead of leaving work, driving home, I just went to
the iPhone app and shut it down. And I'm saving money with the scheduling.

Re: [MacGroup] Recommendations for ink?

2015-03-07 Thread William Micou
My company uses Rapid Refill over on Moser Road off of Shelbyville road
before entering Middletown. Three advantages - local owner (buy local when
possible); there is a slight cost savings; the plastic cartridge is reused
instead of sitting in a landfill. The owner, Dave, has always been very
knowledgable and helpful. Call first to make sure he has your cartridge in
stock.

Second time this has happened to me, but only with the big cartridges, not
the regular sized ones. So I have to get one today. Who in town of the

 some here when needed.

Except for the pain in setting it up, most times it is cheaper to just buy a

One set of high-capcity ink cartridges (black + cyan + yellow + magenta +

[MacGroup] syncing iphone pics to iphoto

2015-02-17 Thread William Micou
Passing this along in case others have this problem.

Last night I was trying to download/ sync photo from my iPhone 5s to iPhoto on
my mac (Yosemite). The mac ‘saw’ only two of the 20 to 30 pictures I had
recently taken. I tried everything to make the other ones visible to the mac. I
rebooted, I named them, nothing worked. This morning I did a search for
problems like I was having. Apparently I’m not the only one having this issue.
It’s either stared after an update with iTunes or another recent update. Hope
it gets fixed soon, trying to free up space on the magic phone.

-The AirPort Time Capsule (mine is 2 TB) can work with backing up multiple

 Right.

-Do I set them up by just telling each machine to use it for backups?

Yes. Make sure you're not using 2T or more space on the three machines you're
 backing up.

-Will it ‘partition’ itself for each machine?

It doesn't partition the drive. It creates a sparse bundle for each machine
and the backups go into the sparse bundles. (A sparse bundle is kind of like
a cross between a folder and a partition. It could be called a virtual
 partition.)

I’ve looked online, but the answers seem vague and I’m unsure how to proceed.

Just start it up. The Time Machine software is smart enough to do the right
 thing.

I don't have an official Apple Time Capsule, but I do some of my backups to a
Netatalk mounted volume from a Linux machine. The Netatalk volume looks to
the Mac just like a Time Capsule. My wife and son both have their MacBooks
backing up to it with Time Machine. I do my backups of a mini and another
MacBook using rsync instead of Time Machine.

I have never used TimeCapsule but it will backup each machine and I feel sure
it will segregate them into their own folders. Depending on the amount of
data on each of your computers the 2 TB may not be large enough to do a
complete backup for each, you need to check this for sure.

It also will be VERY slow the first complete backup, it’s got a lot of data
to capture and it’s wireless. On each machine you choose the TimeCapsule as
the disk to use for the backup in the system Preferences under the
 TimeMachine icon.

 Have a Merry Christmas Bill.

Re: [MacGroup] note taking app

2013-09-04 Thread William Micou
I found Notability about a year ago and use it often. I think it cost 2.99, but it does alot. You can write with a stylus, or the keyboard (or both within a document). It also lets you record audio within a note. You could record the lecture, but take notes also. One of my favorite uses is doctor appointments. When my wife had her knee operations, and the doc came to me afterwards with the results, I was too worried to listen to everything he said, but I had Notability next to me recording his report. Afterward I could play it back for myself and my wife. It also lets you record video for a note. That was used during her phy. therapy to help document progress.I heard good things about Penulimate also, but i have no experience with that one.BillOn Sep 03, 2013, at 11:32 PM, John Robinson profilecoven...@me.com wrote:I use Penulimate as it was promoted by the guy at Apple that taught me FinalCut. My wife has the Verizon version of that. A 'MiFi JetPak', and it too is fast and very useful. I agree about the coffee shops and motels. When I travel I may be in the middle of nowhere when I need to get data from the internet. The Jeep we have has the ability to become a "hot spot" but when you look at the U-Cponnect (Jeep's name for it's information brain that runs the entire vehicle) you find the coverage is very limited, so my next approach was getting a Verizon and ATT WiFi hotspot. I started with ATT, got a little black box that is about the size of my iPod classic, fits inside my Bose earbud case. This puppy is amazing, so much so that I will use it during my 14 day trial and if I am not eating up the 5 gig allowance for the $50.00 a month fee (it cost $49.99 with a 2 yr contract) then I will get rid of the Time Warner internet connection at the office that is costing $198.00 a month. This allows 10 devices to be connected at the same time, it's got 3G, ATT's terminology for 4G and 4g lte, which is what I am running on now, at the office as I type this. I just did a Speedtest on this and the download is almost 21 meg, the upload was almost 11 meg, this sucker flies. Starting Safari, loading a typical page will be loaded by the time I request the page and then click on the tab. I am SO impressed and since I don't do movies, watch a lot of YouTube, play games on line I should be more than fine with the 5 gig. If I go over then it's another $10.00 for an additional gig, the same on up the ladder, another $10. for each additional gig. Where it will suck is when I am away from the 4g lte, but for now I am one happy camper. It also has a touchscreen that is designed like our iPhones and iPod Touch, with icons giving details for the connection, data usage, connected devices, settings, messages, file sharing, media center, GPS, setup. The salesman also had a good point, he said they were selling bunches of these for folks that wanted to protect themselves when in a coffee shop, hotel, or other place offering WiFi, instead of using the WiFi from there location, not knowing how well it's protected they simply use their own hotspot. Did you know that this place is kept off the GPS register (or however they do this) as I ask the guards the first night how in the world can I set a GPS to pick this place up and they replied "you can't". The place is over 100 acres, it had been a mental hospital from the 1930's until the early 2000's when it was abandoned. At that time it was going to cost Indian 60 million to tear it down, then someone decided to turn it into a world class Military, Police, First Responders, Fire training center that these branches FROM ALL OVER the world come to train. The weekend I was there had K-9 dogs from all over the US there for the week, two officers in my hotel were from Maryland. This place is big deal, and very scary. Very scary. No lights at night, yet the place is covered by very high tech cameras that can follow anyone on the property and yet read the serial number on a dollar bill you pull out of your pocket. The place is the most filthy, debris laden place I have ever seen in my life. There is a subway underneath the entire place where training is conducted for a disaster that may happen in our subway systems. There is a section that is for earthquake training, where the buildings are falling apart and leaning from the quake. There is a section that has been hit with a Nuke, total unbelievable destruction that the military needs to train. There is an area where the homes and auto's have been flooded, this was added after Katrina. There is an American Embassy where they train to protect our Ambassador, there is an Arab radio station (internet radio) that is continually sending messages to the Arab world, in the beginning they didn't think this would be a good idea but turns out the Arabs will interact with a voice on the radio much more readily than face to face. I wish I could tell you what it's like, tons of destroyed cars, motor homes, boats, police cars, tons and tons of huge boulders of concrete and uprooted trees. Chairs, tables, tires chrome pieces,, T.V.'s Coke machines, etc. etc. etc. all over the place. And what we needed was the Arab street that the military uses to train. My son and the crew are making a movie, the beginning begins in an Arabian country and they are going door to door trying to eradicate the enemy. They place has Camels, goats, Arabic writing all over the walls, it's very impressive. So that's the background, now for the maps. The first night, Friday, we were there to learn the procedures for the weekend. There was a member of the base that was assigned to the movie crew the entire weekend. We worked 24 hrs straight from 6:00 a.m. Sat. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday and he stayed with us the entire time. But, on Friday night we left under a good bit of rain, and total darkness I had to find my way back to the guardhouse to get to the highway. Made a bad turn somewhere and I ended up on a road that must have been made for a tank, it was very scary for I had NO idea where I was and no way of finding my way out. Finally the iPhone picked up the ATT tower and I ask it from my current location to my hotel in Seymour, and by golly after a few seconds (that seemed like an hour) Siri told me to head a certain direction and from then on she did her thing beautifully. Turn my turn, through subdivisions, down alleys (I am not kidding) on the darkest of nights. Finally I got back to the state highway and headed toward Seymour. After several miles I came to the intersection I would have come out had I found the guardhouse. Needless to say I was thankful, and relived that the "poor" map system on this thing had done it's magical work. I was so lost I am convinced they would have had to send the choppers and those dogs to find me. None of us had service on the base, not ATT, not Verizon, not Sprint. They must have the place darn near blacked out but I was far enough away in that deep woods that I could get the tower. I fed the phone a cookie when we got back to the room and gave it the best charger I had for a job well done. [MacGroup] what was the intetrnet originally called? trivia for you

2012-10-18 Thread William Micou
What Was The
Internet Originally Called?

Answer: The Intergalactic Computer Network

In April of 1963 computer scientist
J. Licklider published a memorandum on the topic of remotely networked
computers entitled “MEMORANDUM FOR: Members and Affiliates of the Intergalactic
Computer Network”. The memo is the first evidence of computer scientists moving
towards establishing a geographically distributed network of computers
resembling the modern Internet and, for a time, the “intergalactic computer
network” nomenclature stuck.

The title fell out of popularity with
the introduction of the Advanced Research Projects Agency’s ARPANET in 1969.
The term “Internet” to refer to a large network of remote computers would not
be put into use until an appearance in a 1974 paper by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn
and wouldn’t be popularized until the early 1990s.

Re: [MacGroup] Great photo printer

2012-10-09 Thread William Micou
Do you need it for a project, or for frequent use?I've always been frustrated with any of the 'photo' printers that I have tried over the years, so whenever I now need to print a group of pictures, I take them to Walgreens, or the FedEx store and have them do them.BillOn Oct 09, 2012, at 10:10 AM, "J. Is this the best way to go? TIA, Jane

[MacGroup] sharing address book (contacts)

2012-10-04 Thread William Micou
It seems like this comes up every few months, so I'm sorry if this is a repeated issue, but realized my method wasn't doing what I thought it was.Question - How do I share my Mac Address Book (on my MacBook Pro iPad) with my wife (iPad)? We each have our own iCloud account, but would like to have a common address book. If I make a change on a contact, I would want her to have the change too.We worked out the calendar app, with us 'sharing' the same calendar, but I don't see a way to do it with contacts. I know I can sent her a vCARD, but I want to do the whole address book, and that way would not keep it all in synch.Anybody have a solution? Thanks.Bill Micou

I've downloaded it on my office pc and my MacBook pro. It works as advertised, but haven't used it enough to recommend it or criticize it.My boss likes TeamViewer, and I've used that the most.BillOn Aug 28, 2012, at 08:35 AM, Richard Meadows rmead...@gmail.com wrote:Anyone on the list use: Splashtop Streamer for Mac?Comments?Richard MeadowsSocial Media ManagementCustomer Service SolutionsGooglePower SearchingHave Laptop - Will TravelLouisville Kentucky ___ MacGroup mailing list MacGroup@erdos.math.louisville.edu http://www.math.louisville.edu/mailman/listinfo/macgroup
