Re: [MacGroup] blocking associated extra cookies?

2018-12-04 Thread preston....@twc.com
Well, some sites’ cookies, like my bank and YouTube for instance, do re-appear.
Perhaps the only site-cookie I retain is for eBay, but if the tag-along
cookies are insistant and continue to re-appear, I’ll need to clear ALL of them
and maybe also Quit Safari. So it's then necessary to log back into the sites
I want. Annoying.

[MacGroup] blocking associative cookies??

2018-11-25 Thread preston....@twc.com
Is there an app that will block those associative cookies?

I visit a website. Their own cookie(s) is to be expected.

But then, I check my Safari Prefs cookie list to find about two dozen others.
At least.

A preferred option would be a checkbox next to each to block any tag-along
associated cookie.

Anything available?

I did read them, but none of those links seem to be specific enough to enable

Any specific references towards the third-party items you/they have mentioned?

I might have expected a checkbox in the accumulated cookie list to either

and use Malwarebytes for Mac (free) anytime something like this shows up. If
it finds anything, you can use the app to clean the found problem(s) from your

I had a problem going from 10.13.2 -to- 10.13.3. AppStore showed the update
for me, accepted all steps, and proceeded fine. After restart, it did not show
the update. Had to search and find a dedicated .dmg for the update, and then
do the update with the boot volume offline. Same thing has happened going from
10.13.3 -to- 10.13.4.

It’s only automatic if the app is setup to do so for a “smart download” under

Re: [MacGroup] MacGroup Digest, Vol 106, Issue 20

2018-02-16 Thread preston....@twc.com
From earlier history on this issue:
I did find a different link, one for a dedicated update to an existing ver.
10.13.2 — and THEN it only worked with an inactive disk (started up from a
cloned backup) to accept the update. I’m now running ver. 10.13.3 without any
apparent problem.

What I’m wondering about now is the AppStore’s update status of ver. 10.13.3,
and its lacking of any history of my past downloads of the new version and
subsequent attempts to update from there, after the Notification update notice
came to my computer.

Thanks, all.

No, I hadn't. But since, the update is no longer available from the AppStore
when I now check. When I view the current UPDATE status from the AppStore, it
does not show [any] history of an update/download of ver. 10.13.3 having
occurred, although I attempted an update/download several times.

Apparently, the update had problems. I checked this morning at 3:30 and now I
see NO update available, nor a history of it having been updated by me locally.
Perhaps something was actually wrong (surprise) with the released update, and
they’re fixing it now.

[MacGroup] FOLLOWUP: Twice-failed install…

2018-02-03 Thread preston....@twc.com
After install attempts using five variations, I’ve tried one that has gone
around the fact that the links I tried did not allow an overwrite of the ACTIVE
system.

I then restarted using my backup system disk (external independent start-up HD).

Using a saved d/l of a specific link for updating over an existing Mac OS X
ver. 10.13.2, I updated the main/primary system HD when NOT active. This
worked.

Can anyone explain why?

Re: [MacGroup] Twice-failed install of new macOS X update (ver. 10.13.3)

2018-02-03 Thread preston....@twc.com
John,

Mine is a Mac mini, mid-2010 (Macmini4.1) — previously running MacOS X ver.
10.13.2, updated using the AppStore’s link. No install oddities.

Alert showed an AppStore update available for MacOS X ver. 10.13.3; d/l
accomplished without any additional alerts or problems. Install observations
showed nothing unusual. Restart seemed fine. Did not install over the
existing ver. 10.13.2

Re: [MacGroup] Twice-failed install of new macOS X update (ver. 10.13.3)

2018-02-03 Thread preston....@twc.com
Tom,

This is a Mac mini, mid-2010 (Macmini4.1) — previously running MacOS X ver.
10.13.2, updated using the AppStore’s link. No install oddities.

Yes, I ran DiskWarrrier, minor corrections made, but after that, the new OS
install still didn’t work over the existing 10.13.2

Also tried a different installer link specific for updating over 10.13.2, but
same failure result.

Lee,

Used AppStore source, and another specific for existing ver. 10.13.2 .
Observed all expected actions during d/l, restart, and install — but the result
is that sys 10.13.2 is retained.

Mac mini (mid-2010), using 10.13.2 .

Tried twice to do the update/install for the new macOS X update (ver. 10.13.3)
for my desktop. Previously existing OS is ver. 10.13.2.

Any indications anyone knows of WHY this update/install is failing?

John,

How old are those mini's?

I have a mid-2010 mini (almost ancient) w/ 8gb RAM and a new 500gb disk. I’m
running High Sierra without problems and have a full backup. I also keep the
previous Sierra on an external disk as an emergency backup.

I haven’t used that to forward junk to.

I do, however, use the referenced organization in the eMail and forward it to
them. In other words, if the eMail is telling me I have some unpaid account

spam/fraud/phishing reporting addy and send the spam to them.

Hello,

Currently using MacOS X ver 10.13.1 on my desktop computer.
Does Terminal still have the srm function for use on hard disk drives?

[MacGroup] Keyboard woes…

2017-11-25 Thread preston....@twc.com
Hello,

Currently using a backup wired keyboard.

My Apple wired full-function extended keyboard just quit working. The [only]
input key that works is the keypad's # 6 key — no other. ???

Does anyone have one of these, fully functioning, that you would part with?
It’s a model A1048, I think; white/clear, and elevated to the back.

Pls & thx,

Re: [MacGroup] Why Is This Happening?

2017-11-01 Thread preston....@twc.com
Something (remotely) similar happened to me, although I can’t explain the
growing/expanding lists that you get.

I would delete cookies, and moments later they would return, also reflecting
sites I hadn’t visited. It turns out that my dedicated HD had developed (too
many) bad sectors. After the drive was replaced, the problem no longer
happened.

Then my next best work-around will be to make an alias onto the Desktop of the
most common folder I write to. No problem then.

Thanks again, Lee.

2017-10-29 Thread preston....@twc.com
Thanks Lee.

Before up’g to 10.12/10.13, I was using 10.11.6 without this noticeable
addition (that I could tell), because at first after going to 10.11, I was able
to use Get Info to allow access to the other access categories. On occasion, I
write to the desktop or the HD and later distribute it to an appropriate folder.

I’ve now done a web search (Bing) to find numerous hits about this. Is it a
real danger to disable this csrutil program?

[MacGroup] OS X 10.13 repair permissions?…

2017-10-28 Thread preston....@twc.com
HD window shows the line-through-pencil graphic at top of Finder window.

Did a Get Info on the HD, unlocked it, attempted to change access
(permissions), then get the message telling me that I don’t have permission to
change permissions on my HD.

In earlier OS X versions, wasn’t repair permissions available in Disk Utility?
Can’t find it now. Various searches in Finder Help, Disk Utility Help, web
search, etc., yield no help.

What to do… …what to do.

Help.

Re: [MacGroup] Help needed for photo-edit utility app…

2017-10-27 Thread preston....@twc.com
Yes, I used that early on, but if I remember correctly, it still left
“artifacts” that were still identifying the app, etc., so I chose to use the
three apps and never looked back, even though it may now be usable for my
purposes. No matter what the origin, SmallImage removed most everything I was
concerned with and it was quick and easy.

Thanks,

I use Photoshop to do primary photo-edits, Preview to do simple and/or

[MacGroup] Help needed for photo-edit utility app…

2017-10-27 Thread preston....@twc.com
I’ve just moved up to Sierra, then a day later to High Sierra.

So…
…I previously used a photo-edit app called SmallImage.

“SmallImage is a simple and efficient tool to batch process JPEG files, resize
them, recompress them, remove embedded profiles and make them ready for the web
or store them efficiently. SmallImage also lets you retreive informations about
your JPEG files, like metadata, EXIF informations, comments and so on.”

This app does not run on the newer Mac OS X (10.12 or 10.13).

Does anyone have suggestions to accomplish the same edits as SmallImage?

Thanks,

Just don’t trip over that extension cord. Don’t cover it either, as it might
heat up and cause an electrical fire. Then you’d REALLY need an electrician —
not to mention an urgent visit from the fire department!

Any clue on how I would determine if it is the power strip or the

 I’ll give that a try.

BTW the computer restarted sometime in the last couple of hours.

Re: [MacGroup] Update

2017-07-22 Thread preston....@twc.com
Which OS system are you referring to? A 10.12.x update?
I’m still using 10.11, and have that current update ((.6)) for my Mac’s OS
version.

Previously used it, and well, it found ONLY the app itself (Malwarebytes
Anit-Malware). That’s partly why I wanted to dissect the app to show those
parts of it that are hidden or imbedded.

Re: [MacGroup] Trouble in Safari paradise

2017-04-18 Thread preston....@twc.com
I’d start by restoring the default prefs. If that’s not it, then delete his
Safari prefs and try making them anew. After that, maybe use an anti-malware
app and scan the system for no-good nicks. I use the free one from
Malwarebytes (Anti-Malware For Mac). Just a couple of suggestions, but I hope
this helps.

The full title is:
"Malwarebytes Anti-Malware For Mac”, and this’ll get you there, sans the spaces
& brackets, of course…
[[ https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware/mac/ ]].

Well, it's only that when playing Chess, Watson follows the rules & regs
entered for it to follow. Seems most likely that is should be an equivalent
situation with the tax app.

Perhaps you could turn off your Safari extensions, then try some of the similar
tasks again you’ve seen Safari freeze with. Or, do a re-boot in Safe Mode (Mac

Richard,

Have you… (1) merely found that all [output] has the offending line on it,
or (2) actually opened and examined the paper in the drawer to find the
garbage was on all sheets?

Since it’s not an online issue, my best guesses are…
If (1), likely there’s a problem with the drum roller, or some contaminated
foreign matter on the corona wire or in the toner hopper.
Or (2), someone else has loaded your paper drawer with preprinted garbage.

Hello Tom,

A quick search on c/net yielded this:
Bypass and reset the password on any Mac in no time. Locked out of your
computer? There's no need to panic, all Macs include a built-in password reset
utility.

… . …

Re: [MacGroup] Disk Warrior question

2016-06-28 Thread preston....@twc.com
Hello Harry,

Perhaps another app to consider is [ iDefrag 5 ] from
.
Their current version 5 supports Mac OS X ver. 10.11. Shouldn’t be a problem
if running from your system disk to defrag your time machine disk (run from
different start-up disk if altering the system disk).
I use it with no issues or problems, although full defragmention does take a
while.: )

The first thing to check is if there’s at least 5100 MB of space available
on the disk. If not, you’ll have to delete some stuff.

Given there’s enough space on the disk, you’ll have to defragment it
somehow. DiskWarrior has defragmentation capability, as do most other disk
utilities such as TechTool—but not Apple’s Disk Utility. Another way is to
copy the files to another disk, delete them from the original and copy
 them back.

I’ve not defragged a Mac this century, so I don’t know how well the tools
in DiskWarrior and TechTool do the job. It’s generally not necessary,
unless you regularly work with files that are so individually huge they
take up a large portion of your hard drive. With drives in the multi-TB
range, this is getting pretty uncommon. If you find you really need to
defrag a drive, you probably need a bigger drive.

Re: [MacGroup] TIVO

2016-06-02 Thread preston....@twc.com
Harry,

I don’t have a direct answer to your question/problem, but have used a local TV
Service/Repair place you might check out to see if they repair TIVO units.
Andy’s TV Sales & Service — across from Oxmoor Plaza on Shelbyville Rd.,
425-1497.

Re: [MacGroup] Still Backing up when "Failed to enable ownership"

2016-05-17 Thread preston....@twc.com
Occasionally, something similar has happened to me involving that ‘end of file’
thingy on a particular JPEG file.
For this file, however, permissions didn’t seem to be the problem; made a copy
of the file to replace the original, could then work with it normally,
including a SuperDuper! backup.
