Re: Statistics packages

2009-08-26 Thread Barry Hadder

Lindsay,

I strongly recommend a tool called octave. It is a Matlab like
environment but it is text based rather than graphical so you will run
it through terminal. It got me through probability and differential
equations I and II. I really don't know what I would have done
without it. You can either get it through macports, or there is a
precompiled version for the mac at: http://octave.sourceforge.net/.
The latter happens to be an app package that you would run from within
finder as you would any other app.You will also want to poke
around the documentation on the octave main sight at
http://gnu.org/software/octave
. However, I wouldn't recommend downloading octave from there
because you will have to build it from scratch by hand and that's not
something you will want to do.

A good place to get started with latex is:
http://www.andy-roberts.net/misc/latex/index.html
. A really good distribution for the mac is mactex. I don't remember
the url, but if you google it it comes right up. You can also get
other tex distributions through macports.

If any of this is confusing, feel free to write me off list. I
probably didn't make some things as clear as I should have.

Re: problems with email on the mac

2009-08-26 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi,

As I understand it, the easiest way to import your mail from OUtlook
Express is to install Thunderbird on your Windows machine, import your
mail into Thunderbird, then import the Thunderbird mail into Mail on
the Mac. I used Eudora and followed this procedure to get my mail into
the Mail program, and it worked fine.

As for your account, do you have the correct names for your incoming
and outgoing mail servers? You can try different authentication
settings as well.

Good luck,
Anna

HI Donna,

Try searching for contacts and type in "Skype test call." If it pops

Statistics packages

2009-08-26 Thread Lindsay Yazzolino

Hi Everyone,

I am going to be taking a college statistics course this fall and am
wondering if there currently exist any accessible statistics packages
for the Mac or if I am best off sticking with WIndows/any other
operating system. Also, what other methods have any of you used for
successfully completing statistics courses? I am looking forward to
the class, and want to make the best use possible of the tools which I
have at my disposal, especially my MacBook. On a related note, I feel
that I would greatly benefit from learning LaTeX for my math and other
courses, andwould love to receive some pointers about where to get

point take this discussion off list if you feel that it benefits
statistics students but not necessarily Mac users.

Are there any mail clients on the mac that are capable of importing outlook

Mail wont accept my account.
I was htinking of getting a gmail address but i have used @home and hotmail for

Hello, Thanks jonathan and others, resetting my modem DID help. I dont remember
this from the past, but i did use a router for atime which crashed, but now
apparently each time i switch from pc i need to reset my router (this is indeed
done by pulling the plug and it will reset) i then have to restart my windows
machine, on the mac it works immediately.
So YES I do now have internet on the mac, great!
I have already downloaded skype, although i am not sure where it put the file,
i cant seem to locate the safari download folder, also if i open skype it gives
me some kind of virtual drive... I guess i need to copy a file to the
applications folder, if I can find the file.

Chris is right here. In the US, these boxes have a battery, so pulling the
plug and replugging it will not work. You need to find the reset button, on the
Motorola boxes I have used you need a unfolded paper clip to reset the box.
Your cable vendor should also be able to do this remotely. Your best bet is
really to get a firewall router that supports NAT. Otherwise you are subjecting
your PC software to too much open visability. Apple airport will work, but so
will Linksys and other inexpensive home routers.

Strange. The Macs and PCs use the same DHCP protocols to get an address.
Is this going right from the router to the Mac or do you have a
firewall/NAT/wireless thing inbetween. If it is direct then sometime the cable
modem reads the hardware address of your computer and needs a full power cycle
to let go and read a new one.

Well lets clear up one item here. The erase and install option
 will
not be available in the menu as it is now. This was do to
 customers
choosing the wrong option and trashing all their data. Erase and
install literally means just that and whatever anyone does, backing
 up
your data is absolutely critical regardless of how good the os is.
Anything could happen and loosing your data is not worth taking the
time to perform this critical step. This is where Time Machine
 really
does shine and yeah, I've been there several times and I have
 suffered
through significant data loss, but well that was do to a drive
 failure
and the backup tape drive failing. :)

test call on Skype?

2009-08-26 Thread Donna Goodin

Hi all,

The Windows version of Skype allows you to make a test call to make
sure things are configured properly. I don't see this option on the
Mac version. Is there some way to do this?
TIA,
Donna

Re: New Os or not?

2009-08-26 Thread Brent Harding

I hope the white Macbooks can do the multi tap or whatever they call it. I
seem to have settings for it and I tested by setting something to 2 fingers
versus one and it could tell in Leopard. I guess this Snow Leopard will end
up telling me whether or not I would maybe like an IPhone should Sprint ever
carry them.

Re: flac files on the mac

2009-08-26 Thread Dane Trethowan
Another thing that VLC has going for it is its audio and video decoder
set, blasts Itunes out of the water completely and by the way, for
those who thought this topic was addressed last week? Wrong! we were
talking of audio encoders - those things which encode audio from one
format to another - and not decoders - them things that decode the
audio so you can hear it .

Re: iworks vs neoofficeRe: has anyone tried neooffice with vo?

2009-08-26 Thread Dane Trethowan

I don't call Iwork expensive, I think it was $88.00 or something like
that when I purchased it earlier on this year, given that Microsoft
Office is about $300.00 here and isn't accessible one bit then I think
Iwork 9 goes into my "Bargain" basket, that's where most Mac
applications belong by the way .

As for the question of what's better? Well, depends on your personal
taste thus far as far as I can tell, i have a fondness for both and
both do things very differently from each other at times. If you're
familiar with Microsoft Word for example then what Neooffice presents
you will look very similar whereas Pages looks somewhat different
though its easy to get used to.

Both product have some accessibility problems at the time of writing,
at least with Neooffice we stand a good chance of having these
problems addressed given that the software is "Open Source", the more
problems the team know about then the better the chances of getting
them fixed .

Yep, its actually Open Office and I use it here all the time,
 some of
the ways the programme presents itself take a little getting used
 to
 though.

I use the Word Processor mainly and I've had a brief look at the
 Spreadsheet, looks okay.

Re: Mac Box Set

2009-08-26 Thread Dane Trethowan

The biggest challenge I've come up against with Pages thus far is the
Auto correct which announces - or is supposed to announce with
Voiceover - miss-spelt words as you type, that doesn't work but again,
I believe this is fixed under Snow Leopard. I've used Footnotes and
endnotes but have not needed to use tables. I've used different
fonts, different allignments and so on but haven't got the hang of how
you're supposed to do bullets and numbering yet but I'll get there
, still a bargain though.

And honestly from all I have been reading, a lot will depend on the

Re: New Os or not?

2009-08-26 Thread Scott Chesworth

Fonzie et al,

Are you certain it will be a full copy that ships? I mean, if the
user were to choose erase and install, would it not require an actual
Leopard DVD anywhere in the instalation process?

I ask because a friend of mine is still running Tiger, but has
recently had to rely on VO way more than before, so she's keen to
upgrade to take advantage of the new web browsing features among other
things. To be blunt, I'm wondering, what's to stop her from strolling
into the Apple store of her choice, purchasing for the upgrade price,
and going straight from Tiger to Leopard.

Cheers for any advice
Scott

Re: switching graphics card, macbook pro

2009-08-26 Thread Scott Howell

That is correct, you make the change in System Preferences, but making
the change is not necessarily going to increase performance either.
The Mac will switch if I recall correctly for graphics intensive
processes. The option is in System Preferences, Energy Saver and look
for graphics. This will be a radio button you set either for better
battery life or better performance. Just not sure how much performance
increase there will be. Think I'll have to try it out and honestly I'm
not sure how much it would affect battery life either and something
else to check into.

I thought you could already copy and paste files. I'm not sure I
 would
want cut equated to delete since that's a rather dangerous thing
 to do
and I might hit cut when I meant copy. At least I do that with
 text all
the time and have to undo.

Re: my macbook pro is here, problems with internet

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
I've been pretty happy with my linksys router. Pretty much works like an
outlet strip for internet connections plus adds wireless. It (or my
cable modem) was a bit sensitive to power burps so about once a month
I'd have to trek down to the basement and power cycle it, but then I
installed a UPS and can't recall the last time I had to restart it.

Assuming Fusion works ok under Snow Leopard, there should be no effect on

Write to the Mozilla accessibility team with a request for your
feature in FV. They have some really excellent hackers, one of the
best is a blind friend of mine who is also former FS, and they'll put
it on there list. Promise to help with documentation or testing or
something and you'll get things done sooner.

Or, find a friend on something like the blind programming list (it's
on freelists) who may be willing to do it for a sandwich.

Happy Hacking,

I would doubt they could actually guarantee delivery then without the

Yep, its actually Open Office and I use it here all the time, some of
the ways the programme presents itself take a little getting used to
 though.

I use the Word Processor mainly and I've had a brief look at the
 Spreadsheet, looks okay.

Re: my macbook pro is here, problems with internet

2009-08-26 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Chris is right here. In the US, these boxes have a battery, so pulling
the plug and replugging it will not work. You need to find the reset
button, on the Motorola boxes I have used you need a unfolded paper
clip to reset the box. Your cable vendor should also be able to do
this remotely. Your best bet is really to get a firewall router that
supports NAT. Otherwise you are subjecting your PC software to too
much open visability. Apple airport will work, but so will Linksys and
other inexpensive home routers.

Re: switching graphics card, macbook pro

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
This is correct. To switch between the NVIDIA 9400M to the 9600M GT and
back you need to make the change in the energy saver preferences and
then log out and back in again. Engadget was complaining that the
chipset doesn't require this and the Sony laptops just have a button
which requires no login/out process.

Re: my macbook pro is here, problems with internet

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
I know for another provider at another location I actually had to call
them to get the MAC address unstuck from my cable modem so I could plug
in another computer. Maybe it has your laptop's MAC address stuck in
there or they only allow access from certain MAC addresses. Did the
power cycle help any?

Re: Snow Leopard and Fusion

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
It gets a bit complicated. Other than Apple's XServe boxes I believe all
Macs will be running 32-bit kernels due to the extensible firmware
interface being 32-bit. Details are here:

update on $10 upgrade to SL

2009-08-26 Thread Donna Goodin

Hi all,

Following Esther's message, I decided to take another run at
upgrading, since what she said coincided with what I had been told
from the guy at my local apple store.. this time, when I pulled up
the page, it came right up, justas the person at the Apple storehad
described. So who knows. Given what Anna posted, it sounds like I'm
not the only one who experienced this glitch, but hopefully the site
is back up to stay.
Cheers,
Donna

Adobe Accessibility

2009-08-26 Thread James & Nash

Hi folks,
Recently, there was a post I think on here about a patition to ask Adobe to
increase its support for accessibility on the Mac platform. This may
interest folks on here. According to the NVDA website, Adobe have provided a
grzant to improve NVDA's sup[ort for PDF and Flash.

I'm not posting this to start a a bad mouthing session about Adobe or
Windows etc but just as a point of interest. Adobe are taking steps even
though perhaps not on the Mac but who knows... a little bit of gentle
coaxing may do wonders. Does anyone know who to contact to discuss
accessibility at Adobe?

Here's the link:

Re: my macbook pro is here, problems with internet

2009-08-26 Thread a radix
Hello, I am planning to do that yes, i just find it very strange that I cannot
use internet at this moment.
I will call my internet provider to see if i need to enter any information. I
know i did have to do that in the past but my internet provider has changed (it
has been taken over by another) and as i said i did not enter anything into
this computer (the pc i am using now) and it still works.

Hello; why don't you just purchase a wireless router? You plug it into your
cable system, and then you could take your laptop anywhere in the house. They
are very cheap and relatively easy to install here. glad to hear we have
another mac user in the fold. have fun with it, Max

Re: cut and paste

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
Well, it doesn't fit the zxcv model but you can just do command delete
to move a file to the trash. If that's a bit difficult you can use the
Keyboard Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard and Mouse System Preferences to
map Command-X to Move to Trash. Not exactly the behavior you described,
but closer.

Hi,

I've used Pages just a bit. It seems to be mostly accessible, though a

Re: program to split a 6 gig dmg in to 2 dvds?

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
If this is an installer, I don't think you can split it. DMG files get
mounted up as disk drives and so the installer can and will seek for
files all over the virtual disk. There is no requirement that they pull
in all the files from one and then move to the rest. There are lots of
ways to split a file in pieces, but you'll have to combine them together
before you can use it. If they are just data files then there is no need
for the DMG. Beyond that you would need to have intimate knowledge of
which files are needed when and make a custom installer, probably beyond
the scope of work you wanted to tackle.

They did on OSX 10.5. There was an option to install Leopard and then

Unlike Microsoft which insists on complicating things by having

iworks vs neoofficeRe: has anyone tried neooffice with vo?

2009-08-26 Thread a radix

Hello, i just read an article on wikipedia about neooffice. It is apparently
a fork of openoffice optimalized for the mac. I will try it as soon as I get
internet working correctly, it seems very interesting.
I guess iworks is accessible too, it isnt too expensive. I need an office
suite that is very much compatible with microsoft office (although i am not
willing to buy that) for our school when you submit essays online they go
through a program that prevents plagiatism but htat needs a certain document
format.

Re: flac files on the mac

At the same time, after you have the plugins you should be able to tag
all your files in bulk. It just puts an osx fingerprint on them to make
iTunes happy. No real user interaction needed.

Seeking VoiceOver users to test Infovox iVox voices in foreign languages

2009-08-26 Thread David Niemeijer

Hi,

As you may have read we will release Infovox iVox 2.0 for Snow Leopard
compatibility as public beta later this week. Not all languages will
be available at once as we do want to make sure that each language
receives basic testing before it is made available as part of the
public beta. If there are major issues with a particular language we
would like those issues to be discovered before the language is put in
public beta so that it will not affect a large number of users.

If you are interested in contributing to these "private" tests please
contact me off-list. We need at most 2 testers per language (on first
come-first serve basis). There is no remuneration for this testing. We
expect you to do serious stress testing of the voices with VoiceOver.
We are looking for people who already own an Infovox iVox license
(i.e. know the product well), who know the Mac and VoiceOver well, who
read and write English well and who enjoy testing new things. Only for
Arabic, which is a completely new language with iVox 2.0 you do not
need to already own an iVox license. Finally, we need feedback within
24-48 hours of you receiving access to the voices.

Testing should take place on Leopard and if you have access to it also
on Snow Leopard.

To express your interest send an email to supp...@assistiveware.com
with the subject "iVox 2 testing" and in the contents mention at the
very least the language(s) you want to test, your current Infovox iVox
activation code(s), your mother tongue, the Mac OS X versions you plan
to test on and your computer model.

We are looking for two testers for each of the following languages:
American Spanish
Canadian French
French
German
Italian
Dutch
Flemish
Spanish
Portuguese
Brazilian Portuguese
Danish
Norwegian
Finnish
Swedish
Arabic
Turkish
Czech
Greek
Russian
Polish

Final note, I may not be able to get back to you immediately as we
will first focus on the most used languages and then move to the less
common languages.

Thanks,

david.

There is a network setup dialog which I (though I am an Internet engineer)
found very easy to use. Generally if you are connecting directly to a DSL
modem then you just need to enable PPPOE. If you are connecting to a cable
modem, then the problem is probably that your modem is locked on your old
computer's ethernet card. Take the power off and then on for modem and see if
that solves the problem.
You can reach me at oncohnfairfax on skype for more help.

Strange. The Macs and PCs use the same DHCP protocols to get an address. Is
this going right from the router to the Mac or do you have a
firewall/NAT/wireless thing inbetween. If it is direct then sometime the cable
modem reads the hardware address of your computer and needs a full power cycle
to let go and read a new one.

As I recall, we did not try to combine VO with Firefox (and the
FireVox extension). IIRC, FireVox on its own was able to
read content shown on the Firefox window aloud, which was
what we were looking for at the time. I don't remember whether
we ran into any other issues when trying it out, though - but
I will try to install it again, and play with it a bit, then report

Re: has anyone tried neooffice with vo?

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
Hmmm. I thought NeoOffice and OpenOffice were different products.
Originally OpenOffice used X11 (a unix windowing system) and NeoOffice
used Java to do the UI from the OpenOffice base code. More recently
openOffice came out with an Aqua version which uses native UI APIs
instead of X11. Here is one comparison site:

http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/NeoOffice_Feature_Comparison

In their table for support of Mac OSX accessibility framework they have
a red x which implies that voiceover support isn't there.

Re: my macbook pro is here, problems with internet

2009-08-26 Thread Chris Blouch
Strange. The Macs and PCs use the same DHCP protocols to get an address.
Is this going right from the router to the Mac or do you have a
firewall/NAT/wireless thing inbetween. If it is direct then sometime the
cable modem reads the hardware address of your computer and needs a full
power cycle to let go and read a new one.

RE: VO, drag and drop with ITunes.

Hi Barry,

thanks a lot this is what I've been doing. However, I've tried to highlight

To drag and drop, first put the vo cursor on the item you want to drag. You
will know if it is high-lited when you here the click sound. That tells you
that keyboard focus is tracking vo.
Route the mouse to vo with vo-cmd-f5.
Lock the mouse with vo-shft-cmd-space.
Move vo where you want to drop and rout the mouse to vo.
Press vo-shft-cmd-space to unlock the mouse.

I've found drag and drop with vo to be very problematic. It seems that that
routing the mouse to vo often doesn't place it in just the write place when
dropping and the drop doesn't occur. I usually can turn mouse keys on by
pressing the option five times and moving the mouse a few positions.

2009-08-26 Thread Donna Goodin

Oh, Chris, that's awful! I'm so sorry! It's so frustrating when stuff
like that happens. :)

Re: Mac Box Set

2009-08-26 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi,

I've used Pages just a bit. It seems to be mostly accessible, though a
few controls don't speak. I could select Blank Document from the list
of templates, and the items on the menu speak. I haven't tried to do
anything complicated, though. Commands like moving to the next bold
text don't work, but I've heard that's supposed to be better in Snow
Leopard.

Best,
Anna
