   new music from me.
   oh, wait, stop.
see? it doesn't fit the list.
I am most likely taking this point a bit far but do you get the point? this
isn't a music list or an ITunes gift card list but a list to discuss the mac.
hope this makes you understand where we are coming from.
if you have something to promote you set up a mailing list.
then you get people on them. point said. i digress.
let's get back to talking mac related stuff shall we? thanks.

Re: downloading actual youtube videos?

2012-10-04 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I don't bother with trying to download from youtube usually. I just turn on
recording for safari in audio hijack pro with recording set to remove silence
(there's a decibel level setting and duration for this). Then I go into safari
and activate the link to what I want to record and I frankly think it comes out
sounding just as good as if I had downloaded it. But I admit I'm not trying to
do anything highly professional with the recording. I'm usually just trying to
learn new worship music for church or other music just for my own enjoyment.

Re: described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions

2012-10-04 Thread Alex Hall
I found 3 movies with description on iTunes, all Disney movies that did not
interest me at all. I asked Apple, and they said the content they get is really
up to their providers, suggesting that it is the movie companies who are not
giving them described content. I can see this happening more for tv shows than
movies, but I don't know how all the contracts and such work. Apple did say,
though, that they would pass along my suggestion of being able to filter
searches by whether or not a title is described, so that's something. I would
encourage anyone else who wants described titles on iTunes to email
accessibil...@apple.com to ask them, so they can see how big an interest there
is.

Hey guys, Just wanted to chime in here, as it really is ashame how
ignored we the blind are when it comes to described video. For
example, I have yet to find a Netflix title through Netflix streaming
offer descriptive video. Then again, I think that Netflix just
recently was pressured into providing the close captioning option for
their titles. Unfortunately, we the blind have such a weak lobby that
I don't see this as an option anytime soon. Considering that the 21st
Century Communications Accessibility Act went into effect on July 1,
and none of the blind organizations had a mention of this historic
legislation on their websites, not sure who we would even approach
about addressing this. From the little research that I have done
neither Netflix, nor Amazon, nor Itunes offers any of their content
with descriptive video. For now, I rely on the movie feeds through
Serotek and sitting at my computer. Of course, I have a mac, and have
to use chrome which seems to be the only browser that works with this
fantastic content. The only problem is there is no way to rewind or
fast forward the content, which is a problem, especially if you have a
prblem with a movie which happened to me once. Would love to hear I am
wrong on some of this, so please do let me know. Thanks

Second, a more general purchasing question. When one buys a movie or tv show

content with different licensing like tv shows or movies. Thanks.

Possible bug with iPhone 4 and Messages app on iOS 6, can you duplicate?

2012-10-04 Thread Chris

Hello all.
I just had quite a scary incident on my iPhone 4 running iOS 6. Lol!
Have you guys noticed that when you open the Messages app and you are in
a conversation, VoiceOver does not confirm where you are? This happens
to me most of the time. So today I did a one finger flick to the left to
make sure I was on the back button, or at least that's where I thought I
was. I know this as I heard the sound to indicate I was at the beginning
or end of the screen. But guess what? I double tapped, and I ended up
calling the person who I was having the conversation with! Not only
that, I completely lost speech for several seconds! Lol!
It is sorted now, but if you can duplicate, this would be very much
appreciated, then I can send a bug report to Apple.

Thank you very much in advance.

iLife apps missing?

2012-10-04 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
We now have a 2007 mini running 10.7.5 set up in the living room as the family
mac, and everyone has their own account on it. Oddly, though, no one seems to
have iPhoto or iMovie. I signed into the app store on my account and went to
purchases, but I am seeing that the mac thinks these apps are already
installed. My personal mac is a 2011 mini running Mountain Lion, but when I got
it it had Lion and iPhoto and iMovie were already installed. Is there any way
to get these apps onto the 2007 mini so everyone can have access to them?
Thanks, and I hope I explained this well enough.

I normally open the video space, then vo-shift-m on the player menu button and
download from there. Be warned, though, that the download feature recently
started giving errors, probably because of the changes Youtube made so people
could no longer have services give them pm3s of videos.

what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'd like to be able to add all my music to iTunes (and there's a whole lot of
it), but I have some concerns.
1. Will it all be converted to m4a or aac? What about unsupported formats, like
wma or ogg?
2. Will it be copied to the iTunes library, or will iTunes just look in the
folders to which I point it?
3. Will it honor folders I make? Some music is ripped from CDs I use for
practicing songs on bass or guitar, so it has no artist or album meta data.
However, I keep it separate from my other music as most of it is shifted to new
keys and so sounds rather odd. In other words, I need to keep it separate, or
at least flagged somehow, so it does not play with my normal music. I
categorize a lot of music like this, such as putting it in a comedy or country
folder in my music folder. What will iTunes do about that?
4. If I decide I want to get rid of music from iTunes, can I do so with no
erasing of anything?
5. In iTunes, can I view by song, artist, album, and so on like I can on my
iPod? I tried this with the few songs already in the library, but could not see
a way to do it.
Thanks for any help. I'm normally no fan of iTunes, but I must say I like the
remote control on the Apple earbuds and being able to sync certain songs with
my iPod to have them with me, particularly with the wifi sync option.

hosting a blog with Wordpress.org

Hi all,

I am thinking of moving my podcast to wordpress.org. Now I have a temporary
blog/podcast hosted on wordpress.com. How easy is it to transfer from
wordpress.com to wordpress.org? Also, is the wordpress software and
configuration of plugins easy with the Mac? I've also heard of Westhost and
that they too have wordpress hosting. Any suggestions or thoughts would be
greatly appreciated. I know someone posted this question a while back.

Sincerely,
Allison

What is it you want the 4 programs to do together? I could give you

2012-10-04 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
You would be way way better using Mars Edit on the Mac. It's a bit pricy,
yeah, I'll givwe ya that, but man oh man! is it worth it! And the developer is
totally! aware of Voiceover accessibility and has directly stated that he is
commited to do whatever it takes to keep the product 100% accessible.

This app would let you edit your blog with Mars Edit.

As for plugins, I think that depends on which ones you use, but generally, yes.
 They should work fine.

Chris.

Re: what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hello,

iTunes will not do anything to your music. It is all configurable with the
options in preferences.

1. No, it will not be converted.
2. It is an option to copy it to the iTunes library and organize it under
there, but even if it does so, it does not touch your original copy.
3. It doesn't care about folders nor will it touch any file or directory you
create. If it copies it to its own library, then it is in charge of organizing
that folder obviously.
4. You can delete songs from iTunes without deleting the file itself.
5. The grid view will allow you to browse by album, artist, genre, etc.

 like wma or ogg?
 2. Will it be copied to the iTunes library, or will iTunes just look in the
folders to which I point it?
 3. Will it honor folders I make? Some music is ripped from CDs I use for
practicing songs on bass or guitar, so it has no artist or album meta data.
However, I keep it separate from my other music as most of it is shifted to
new keys and so sounds rather odd. In other words, I need to keep it
separate, or at least flagged somehow, so it does not play with my normal
music. I categorize a lot of music like this, such as putting it in a comedy
or country folder in my music folder. What will iTunes do about that?
 4. If I decide I want to get rid of music from iTunes, can I do so with no
 erasing of anything?
 5. In iTunes, can I view by song, artist, album, and so on like I can on my
iPod? I tried this with the few songs already in the library, but could not
see a way to do it.
Thanks for any help. I'm normally no fan of iTunes, but I must say I like the

my iPod to have them with me, particularly with the wifi sync option.

Mac Tubes Download Solution

2012-10-04 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello Everyone,

Thank you Alex for your tip.
Although not successful, I have a solution that has worked so far.
I play the video in the application, VO-left arrow to the menu button and
preform a right-click.
I'm presented with several options upon down-arrowing, and I believe the 3rd or
4th option down is the download submenu where I can press enter on the type of
download format I would like.

I hope this is helpful for some - cheers.

Does this work for you even now? That's how I usually do it (sorry if my

fact, I can only get the flash player to work - the other two player types do
nothing - and that has only audio, no video. Is it just my machine then?

Re: what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Brandon Olivares
You could put it all under a particular playlist, but you'd still have to
exclude it from the rest of your music. Honestly, I'd just not put that
practice music in iTunes at all.

Although, now that I think of it, you can set the genre to something like
Speech or some other rarely used genre, and have a smart playlist exclude that
genre.

Also, you don't have to select the option to import it into the iTunes library
folder. I prefer it because you always know where to find it.

Re: what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Alex Hall
Okay, I think I'm still a bit confused as far as importing into the library.
So, I can either copy it all, or just point iTunes to my music folders? If I do
the latter, are there any risks or concerns I should know about, such as album
art popping up all over the place or files getting moved around t be
auto-sorted into artist/album folders? I don't sort by album, I just put all
music in a genre into a single folder and leave it at that. As I said, I think
iTunes will give me the best of both worlds, being able to just sort by genre,
album, or whatever, but I don't want my actual directory structure changed
around if iTunes thinks it knows best. I realize I can just tell it to copy
into the library folder, but, as I said, that would take up a lot of hard drive
space and would mean any new songs I download from sources other than iTunes
would have to be manually added. Thanks for your help so far; this is the first
time I've ever used a media player's library feature and I am, as you can tell,
unsure of how it all works.

Re: what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Timothy Clark Music
i wouldn't use iTunes as it makes duplicates and personally i hate that. also,
let's say there are two people singing on one track, it will put it in it's own
folder instead of putting it in a discography or something.
 hope this helps

album art popping up all over the place or files getting moved around t be

music in a genre into a single folder and leave it at that. As I said, I
think iTunes will give me the best of both worlds, being able to just sort by
genre, album, or whatever, but I don't want my actual directory structure

to copy into the library folder, but, as I said, that would take up a lot of
hard drive space and would mean any new songs I download from sources other

Although, now that I think of it, you can set the genre to something like
Speech or some other rarely used genre, and have a smart playlist exclude
 that genre.

Also, you don't have to select the option to import it into the iTunes
library folder. I prefer it because you always know where to find it.

 Hello,

iTunes will not do anything to your music. It is all configurable with the

 1. No, it will not be converted.
 2. It is an option to copy it to the iTunes library and organize it under
there, but even if it does so, it does not touch your original copy.
 3. It doesn't care about folders nor will it touch any file or directory
you create. If it copies it to its own library, then it is in charge of
 organizing that folder obviously.
 4. You can delete songs from iTunes without deleting the file itself.
 5. The grid view will allow you to browse by album, artist, genre, etc.

 formats, like wma or ogg?
 2. Will it be copied to the iTunes library, or will iTunes just look in
the folders to which I point it?
 3. Will it honor folders I make? Some music is ripped from CDs I use for
practicing songs on bass or guitar, so it has no artist or album meta
data. However, I keep it separate from my other music as most of it is
shifted to new keys and so sounds rather odd. In other words, I need to
keep it separate, or at least flagged somehow, so it does not play with
my normal music. I categorize a lot of music like this, such as putting

Re: described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions

2012-10-04 Thread Marc Rocheleau
I'm pretty sure it's up to the movie studio in a lot of cases to
provide a script or audio track for described content that's made
available officially through channels such as these. If online
streaming/rental services don't have permission or rights to use these
scripts or audio tracks, they're not allowed to create their own, as
far as I know.

I know with descriptive video in Canada at Cineplex theatres, they
can't provide the service if they don't receive this
content/permission from the movie distributors. I do know, however,
that Disney in particular is starting to offer described content on
their DVD releases. Examples of this include Toy Story 3, The Muppets
and -- most recently -- Marvel's The Avengers. I'm not sure if this
same feature is available on the digital copy though (its in the
languages section of the DVDs.)

shows than movies, but I don't know how all the contracts and such work.
Apple did say, though, that they would pass along my suggestion of being
able to filter searches by whether or not a title is described, so that's
something. I would encourage anyone else who wants described titles on

recently was pressured into providing the close captioning option for
their titles.

Hi Vivianna,

I've seen this error several times in my VM Fusion using 4.1. Each
time it happened I wend to devices and arrowed down to sound card and pressed

Boot Camp and 10.8.2

2012-10-04 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi all,

I was wondering how hard it is to install Boot Camp, if it costs money, and if
it is worth it if i already ache VMware Fusion. Waht are the
advantages/disadvantages? would it make the Windows side of my computer
faster/more efficient to be running without the Mac portion running at the same
time, for example? I know others ahve provided instructions, so I could search
for those threads, if instructions were provided about the best way to search
the mail archives, as I don't know.

Also, my other question has to do with 10.8.2. I wondered, since I know some
of you ahve had issues with Voiceover in 10.8.2, owudl yo urecommend I upgrade
from 10.8.1? I am really wanting to improve my Spanish skills, but my
Voiceover defaults to English each time I restart to English even though my
system in in Spanish. I would install 10.8.2 in Spanish to avoid this, but
don't want to make VoiceOver unreliable if 10.8.2 is still pretty buggy.

Thanks for any help, and I hope this is all clear, being unrelated as both
portiosn of the post are.

Regards,

harry

Re: what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Brandon has answered most of your questions, but I'll chime in here with some
clarifications if you don't mind.

I believe that you need to understand the difference between the iTunes main
Library and Playlists. The main iTunes music Library consists of all your
imported music, no matter what genre, artist, or album. You create playlists
to organize music in whatever fashion you wish. Music can belong to multiple
playlists so you can create a playlist with all your practice music in it and
you'd simply select that playlist when you wished to access that group of music.

If you allow iTunes to copy items into its directory, iTunes will organize its
folder structure by looking at the tags. It will then place the items in its
Music folder by first creating a parent folder with the Artist name, then
placing another folder with the Album name within that folder and then the
actual song file within the Album folder. When iTunes encounters another item
by the same artist, it will place it within the same parent folder and either
create a new album folder or place it in the existing album folder if one
already exists.

All this is done for iTunes purposes only. You create your own Playlists
within the UI and organize them however you want. The organization of the
playlists does not affect the folder structure behind the scenes. All that is
happening in these multiple playlists is done within the iTunes database. So,
the database simply points the player to whatever songs it needs to play.
Therefore, having a song in 20 different playlists does not cause you to have
20 copies of the song, there is just one copy of the song pointed to 20 times.
In this manner, you can put the Beach Boys, Surfin' USA into a 60s playlist, a
sunshine playlist and anything else you wish but only one song was ever
imported into your Library.

For all the noise that I hear on this list about the pitfalls of iTunes, I
think its simply a preferential thing more than a usability thing. I use
iTunes for all my media including Movies, TV shows, music, Podcasts and more
and find it to be an awesome application for managing and playing my media.

Bookshare App question

2012-10-04 Thread Jane
Is there anyway to save books you downloaded from withint he Bookshare app

documents, it doesn't show any that I have downloaded from inside the app, only
documents that I have downloaded from the web and added manually through

Any thoughts on how I can do this?

iPhone5 Speaker Blaring Out Quickly

2012-10-04 Thread Rodney Haynie
Hello All.

I wonder if anyone else has found the same issue with their iPhone5.

If I am on a call, with the phone held to my ear, and I go to terminate the
call, I begin to move the phone away from my ear. If the person hangs up while
I am doing this, then the iPhone will blurt out a word or two very loudly.
Sometimes through the ear piece, and other times seemingly through the speaker
phone. In both cases it will hurt your ear momentarily. Then the volume
immediately jumps back to normal.

This is very embarrassing when I am in an office setting.

Anyone else see this?

Thanks.

Re: what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Alex Hall
That makes sense. My one question remains, though: what advantages are there to
copying music to the library versus pointing iTunes to my existing folders (f,
in fact, you can point to folders)? I have so far heard that you can tell
iTunes where to find music and it will not copy it, and that you must let
iTunes make a copy. Once I get this sorted, it sounds like playlists will be
useful. Incidentally, what is a smart playlist versus what I suppose one
would call a normal playlist?

Music can belong to multiple
playlists so you can create a playlist with all your practice music in it and
you'd simply select that playlist when you wished to access that group of
 music.

If you allow iTunes to copy items into its directory, iTunes will organize
its folder structure by looking at the tags. It will then place the items in
its Music folder by first creating a parent folder with the Artist name, then
placing another folder with the Album name within that folder and then the
actual song file within the Album folder. When iTunes encounters another

I think it is because speaker phone needs to have voiceover speaking
more loudly through it than when not on a call, the opposite of people
having concerns about it not speaking loud enough. I think it can just
be a matter that it, in some cases, might not be perfectly on time in
adjusting back. I think it might just be nitpicking to take issue with
that. Sometimes trying to fix little tiny nitpick issues ends up with
a result that is worse. I also have to say I really don't get peoples'
super sensative embarrassment thing if people hear your phone say
something for a second. If one is really that concerned about that,
for whatever sake use headphones! Honestly, unless people are
disrupted and long enough to care, they probably don't! They probably
don't even hear it in most cases or even register it in their mind.

Re: what, exactly, will iTunes do to my music?

2012-10-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

pointing vs copying is really a matter of preference as well. For me, as I
mentioned in my earlier post, I prefer iTunes to deal with my entire media
collection. So, I believe that letting iTunes make a copy of these items in
its Library structure is best. In this case, the management of all the media
is performed within iTunes itself. Some problems that may occur when leaving
the music and other media elsewhere arises when you move these external folders
and items around. In the iTunes database, the various items have their
locations marked and if you move them anywhere else, then iTunes can't find
them without your intervention. Some folks don't consider this an issue so
leaving their music outside of the iTunes Library structure serves them well.

Does that help?

That makes sense. My one question remains, though: what advantages are there
to copying music to the library versus pointing iTunes to my existing folders
(f, in fact, you can point to folders)? I have so far heard that you can tell
iTunes where to find music and it will not copy it, and that you must let
iTunes make a copy. Once I get this sorted, it sounds like playlists will be
useful. Incidentally, what is a smart playlist versus what I suppose one
 would call a normal playlist?

 Hi,

Brandon has answered most of your questions, but I'll chime in here with
some clarifications if you don't mind.

I believe that you need to understand the difference between the iTunes main
Library and Playlists. The main iTunes music Library consists of all your
imported music, no matter what genre, artist, or album. You create
playlists to organize music in whatever fashion you wish. Music can belong
to multiple playlists so you can create a playlist with all your practice
music in it and you'd simply select that playlist when you wished to access
 that group of music.

If you allow iTunes to copy items into its directory, iTunes will organize
its folder structure by looking at the tags. It will then place the items
in its Music folder by first creating a parent folder with the Artist name,
then placing another folder with the Album name within that folder and then
the actual song file within the Album folder. When iTunes encounters
another item by the same artist, it will place it within the same parent
folder and either create a new album folder or place it in the existing
album folder if one already exists.

All this is done for iTunes purposes only. You create your own Playlists
within the UI and organize them however you want. The organization of the
playlists does not affect the folder structure behind the scenes. All that
is happening in these multiple playlists is done within the iTunes database.
So, the database simply points the player to whatever songs it needs to
play. Therefore, having a song in 20 different playlists does not cause you
to have 20 copies of the song, there is just one copy of the song pointed to
20 times. In this manner, you can put the Beach Boys, Surfin' USA into a
60s playlist, a sunshine playlist and anything else you wish but only one
song was ever imported into your Library.

For all the noise that I hear on this list about the pitfalls of iTunes, I
think its simply a preferential thing more than a usability thing. I use
iTunes for all my media including Movies, TV shows, music, Podcasts and more
and find it to be an awesome application for managing and playing my media.

 HTH.

Okay, I think I'm still a bit confused as far as importing into the
library. So, I can either copy it all, or just point iTunes to my music
folders? If I do the latter, are there any risks or concerns I should know
about, such as album art popping up all over the place or files getting
 moved around t be auto-sorted into artist/album folders? I don't sort by
album, I just put all music in a genre into a single folder and leave it at
that. As I said, I think iTunes will give me the best of both worlds, being
able to just sort by genre, album, or whatever, but I don't want my actual
directory structure changed around if iTunes thinks it knows best. I
realize I can just tell it to copy into the library folder, but, as I said,
that would take up a lot of hard drive space and would mean any new songs I
download from sources other than iTunes would have to be manually added.
Thanks for your help so far; this is the first time I've ever used a media
player's library feature and I am, as you can tell, unsure of how it all
 works.
