Adding Items to the Doc

2012-10-21 Thread Les Kriegler
I recently installed drivers for our HP Printer/copier/scanner. I went into
the Applications Folder, found HP Scan and attempted to add this to the Dock
with Command-Shift-T. I think it may have been under the HP Utilities Folder.
Anyway, VO announced "add to Dock", but when I accessed the dock, the number of
items in the dock did not increase and HP Scan wasn't in the Dock. I tried a
second time with the same result. Any ideas as to why this item does not
appear in the Dock? Thanks.

Where is the settings for java after it has been updated. I am using apples

A Weird Mail Experience

2012-10-21 Thread Les Kriegler
I wanted to move a message into a folder and then check to make certain it was
in that folder. To check my folder list, once on the Messages Table, I use
Shift-Tab five times to reach the list of folders. But when I tried this
earlier today, I landed on a button to either show or hide Mailboxes. I could
not locate my mailbox list, regardless of the state of that button. So for
kicks, I turned on QuickNav and was able with Shift-Tab to locate the mailbox
list and it worked normally again. I then turned off QuickNav and the mailbox
list was still present. Any ideas as to why I lost the mailbox list in the
first place and why turning on QuickNav seemed to resolve that issue? Thanks.

Re: What are your favorite Mac apps?

2012-10-21 Thread Alex Hall
If you have Twitter, YoruFukurou is a must, and it's free. Mactubes is a great
app that lets you browser Youtube and even download mp4 movie files of videos
you watch (I save guitar how-tos this way). Hmm... I use reminders and calendar
all the time, but those are built in... Oh, there's the RS Games client, which
lets you play Uno, Battleship, 1000 Miles, and a couple other games against the
computer or other players online. I think the site for that is rsgames.net but
I'm not sure, so google might be your best bet to find it. Of course Dropbox is
important to me, especially now that I can access the menu for it in Mountain
Lion. That's all I can think of for the moment, aside from the other built-in
apps I use (Safari, Mail, Contacts, and so on).

dragging dock items?

2012-10-21 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
How do I drag dock items into a different order? I thought I'd just hit
vo-comma to drag, then vo-period to drop. However, comma says the item is
marked for drag and drop, while period actually says that I am dragging the
item. Hitting any arrows, or vo-arrows, opens a context menu for the item. So,
why do the drag/drop commands behave so oddly and not according to their
descriptions, and why can I not move to the marked item's destination in the
dock? I've never dragged anything before with vo, or without it for that
matter, so any help would be great. Thanks.

VMWare Fusion and bootcamp

2012-10-21 Thread Phil Halton
Sorry if I keep going round and round on this topic, but I want to do this
right.

I spent alot of time getting Windows7 setup in a bootcamp installation on my
iMac. Now I have a trial copy of fusion5 and after I install it, I will most
likely buy it as I know from watching the list that it works well, and will let
me use windows and OSX side-by-side.

But, before I rip out the bootcamp partition and go the fusion route, I want to
know:

Is there a downside to keeping the bootcamp - other than its disk usage I mean?

If I just ask fusion5 to use the bootcamp installation, will all the programs
(screen reader etc) work as well as if I went the fusion install route?

Can I do both? I kind of like having windows as a native installation.

please bury me with more information than I'll ever need on this topic;-)

Home folder shortcut

2012-10-21 Thread ROD SKENE
Hello all,
Is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut for my home folder? I know I can
use the command shift H when the focus is on the finder, but I would like a
keystroke to quickly go to my home folder from anywhere.
Thanks,
Rod

RE: VMWare Fusion and bootcamp

2012-10-21 Thread Tommy Craig
As far as I know there is no downside to keeping you Bootcamp partition. I
have been using this method for about two years and have upgraded from
Fusion 3 to 4 and now to 5 without any problems.

Sorry if I keep going round and round on this topic, but I want to do this
right.

I spent alot of time getting Windows7 setup in a bootcamp installation on my
iMac. Now I have a trial copy of fusion5 and after I install it, I will most
likely buy it as I know from watching the list that it works well, and will
let me use windows and OSX side-by-side.

But, before I rip out the bootcamp partition and go the fusion route, I want
to know:

Is there a downside to keeping the bootcamp - other than its disk usage I
mean?

If I just ask fusion5 to use the bootcamp installation, will all the
programs (screen reader etc) work as well as if I went the fusion install
route?

Can I do both? I kind of like having windows as a native installation.

please bury me with more information than I'll ever need on this topic;-)

That's very odd. You might try doing it via the other method: open it, go to
the dock, bring up the contextual menu with VO-shift-M, choose options, and
then "keep in dock".

If so, do you launch the browser from Keeper since it has the info
stored or do you go to the webbed and it auto fills the required info.
thanks for any help.

New Google Groups Interface

2012-10-21 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello everyone,

The new google groups interface on the web is cumbersome to navigate in my
opinion.
I have tried clicking the "Revert to the old google groups" link, and clicking
the link to give a suggestion, but after taking me to the salutation page where
the site indicates it appreciates my response, I cannot get to the "old google
groups" interface.
Clicking the "skip to content" link does nothing, and I have found myself going
in circles.
What alternatives do others have on how to expeditiously reply to posts on the
Macvisionaries list?

MSN.com and apple mail?

2012-10-21 Thread matthew Dyer
Hi all,

I have a question about msn.com and apple mail. I have an msn hotmmail account
which I am using to write this message, but there are 2 things that I notested
and wondered if anyone else notested this. First off I notested that in the
mail boxes table, I have 2 msn mail boxes for the same account and the other is
that I see 2 copies of the same message. I know that on the web interface
there is only 1 copy it just shows that way in apple mail. Any idea why this
is? Thanks.

Matthew

Transferring NLS Books to SD card

2012-10-21 Thread -

Someone thought:

"The DB is an integral part of the book number. stands for Digital Book.
I

think the NLS player needs that file name protocol so when you go into
"bookshelf mode," (holding down the play button till it falls off or says
 Bookshelf), it can identify them."

Me:

It doesn't work like that. I completely rename the title and it works
fine in allfunctions.

One thing about navigon, unless they have changed this, entering addresses is
much more complicated than it needs to be. You must go through several screens,
the first for the state, then the city, and finally the street and house
number. With motionx GPS, just type in the address on one screen and off you go.

Getting a directory list

2012-10-21 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Guys.
I have a number of files, about 64 of them, that I wish to braille translate.
They are all in one fobbder. I have Louis on my Mac, and as best I can figure,
there is no way to tell the program to qoanslate the whole folder and name the
files in another one with the extension brl on the end. As far as I can see,
you have to type in each file name. To do this more efficiently, I need to make
a directory listing, preferably into a file that I could open in TextEdit or
Pages. This way, I can keep up with which files I've done already. How do I get
a directory listing on this folder into a file? Failing that, how do I just get
the folder's directory so that I can copy each file by hand first if necessary.
I realize I could just go down the listing and copy the names on a brailler if
necessary. I don't want to do that unless I have to. Have any ideas guys?

Re: VMWare Fusion and bootcamp

2012-10-21 Thread Phil Halton
MessageThanks Tommy,

Well, I ran VMWare for the first time and got it authorized, read the help
files and understand how to get boot camp setup as a Virtual machine. However,
VM doesn't seem to "see" my boot camp. I'm told to find boot camp in the list
of VM's in the Virtual Machine Library, but that list is empty - no bootcamp.

Any suggestions?

As far as I know there is no downside to keeping you Bootcamp partition. I

But, before I rip out the bootcamp partition and go the fusion route, I want
to know:

Is there a downside to keeping the bootcamp - other than its disk usage I
mean?

If I just ask fusion5 to use the bootcamp installation, will all the programs
(screen reader etc) work as well as if I went the fusion install route?

Can I do both? I kind of like having windows as a native installation.

please bury me with more information than I'll ever need on this topic;-)

Hi Candie,

I use MacKeeper. I run System Scan about once per week. The only time I hear

can run and schedule scans of your system. I find it a worthwhile program.

Re: Best GPS for me?

2012-10-21 Thread Tammy

Hi,

Since you use both ariadne as well as blind square, can you tell me what the
advantages to having blindsquare are over Ariadne?? I'm trying to figure
out whether I could use blind square, and therefore justify the 14 dollar
price tag.

Thanks,

Tammy

Hi Mel
I use navagon, ariadne and blind square. All available from the app store.
NOt free though, sorry.

I use Color Visor which is excellent.
The money readers around don't support New Zealand currency so I don't use
one. I'm told Look Tell is very good. just search for Looktell and find
their money reader.

Good luck.

Re: Best GPS for me?

2012-10-21 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi
The reason I use blind square is because it gives lots of POIs here in New
Zealand, which Ariadne doesn't. Ariadne is really good at giving street
numbers, and at saying exactly where you are now, but here in NZ it doesn't
give any pois. Blind Square chatters away and gives pois plus tracks your
target in terms of the clock face. I have found it really accurate here. Both
apps do different things.
I don't know how well Ariadne works where you are though,so can't tell whether
Blind Square would give more pois than ariadne for you.

Blank XML files in Safari?

2012-10-21 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi, I wondered if anyone else has experienced this and what I could do about
it. When I go to open a couple of Bookshare books with the .xml file in
Safari, they show up blank. One of them is a book I was in the middle of
reading, and then closed and tried to go back to. it showed up blank, so I
deleted the entire thing and redownloaded it, and still the same thing. The
other is a book I just downloaded tonight and tried to open for the first time,
again using the .xml file in Safari. it, too shows up blank. Other books in
my collection are perfectly fine. One book is in Spanish and the other in
English, and I really don't know what is going on. They are both books I would
really like to read. One of them is publisher quality and the other is not, so
that should not have an impact.

Does anyone have any thoughts about how I could solve this or what might be
going on?

Thanks so much,

Harry

Re: Best GPS for me?

2012-10-21 Thread Tammy

Hi,

Does blindsquare announce the street crossings as you come to them
automaticly or do you have to press a button to see what street you're about
to cross? Also, does it just use voiceover or can you get a text to speech
voice giving you direction? I often find that the voiceover voice is hard
ot hear when I'm walking and have the phone in a pocket or similar, or if
I'm in a louder environment.

Newbie tip: some useful (mainstream) keystrokes

2012-10-21 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Here's another tip I wish I'd known about a long time ago. Note that the below
keystrokes use the f keys, so on a macbook or apple keyboard you may need to
hold down the function key, depending on your settings. Also, none of these
requires Voiceover to be on, which is why I said they are mainstream. While I
know we are all vo users, these are good to know if vo quits on you, if a
sighted person likes using the keyboard and asks how you get around without a
mouse, if you simply find one of these more convenient, and so forth. So, here
we go:
Control-f2: go to menu bar (same as vo-m)
ctrl-f3: go to dock (same as vo-d)
ctrl-f4: move between open applications (same as cmd-tab, add shift to go
backward)
ctrl-f5: move to or from toolbar, if present
ctrl-f8: go to status menus (same as vo-m twice)
So, now you know. I like the ctrl-f5 command, and I often use ctrl-f3 to go to
the dock because it's easier to find than fo-d, but that's just me. Again,
though, these are not dependent on Voiceover being on, though cmd-tab is not
either so I don't know why apple included a second application switching
command.

Re: Best GPS for me?

2012-10-21 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi Tammy
Yes blind square announces street crossings automatically. You don't have to
push a button to hear it.
It uses its own text to speech voice. Mine is British English. It's very easy
to hear.

keyboard command to focus active windows?

2012-10-21 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I tweeted the keyboard commands I just sent and got a reply asking if I knew
the focus open windows keystroke. Apparently, with vo on, double tapping the

what the command is, if one exists? Thanks.
