Hi, Sound Forge for Mac is very much accessible in terms of basic functionalities. Navigating and editing works fine. Recording isn't accessible. All you can do is start and stop a recording but the Mac gets very hot then and VO says busy busy. So that's not fun at least to me. When it comes to more advanced editing functions VO doesn't read properly the contents of the windows. And what I miss very much is the scrubb functionality of the windows version by pressing j or l. That doesn't exist in the Mac version. But beside of that it works fine for simple editing. But in my opinion it's to expensive just for that. Hi, yes I have the same issue. It accurs just under the following circumstances: 1. It just happens in Mail. 2. It just happens with the offline version of Dictation. 3. It just happens if dictating several sentences without stopping it by pressing FN twice. Mainly it happens here if dictating minimum five or six sentences in a row. I experienced it on two different MacBook Airs and so it seems to be a general issue that's worth to report to Apple. windows virtual machine
Hi all, Just got a question about windows on the mac in virtual machine. Can someone please explain how this works exactly? I know you can assign a certain disc space, ram, etc to use windows. How does this work? what is the least amount of hard drive space needed to run windows and what’s the least amount of ram needed? Because this hard drive space and ram is being used for windows, does this effect things on the mac side, do you now have less hard drive space and ram on the mac side of things because part of the computer is now being used for windows? And what if you were using windows for something requiring a lot of processing power, such as game play? if you chose the least amount of ram and hard drive space, does this then effect how well programs will run under windows and how much storage space you have under windows? Brian I am using dictation to compose this e-mail and so far have not had any crashes. What default language are you using? I have never actually used e-mail and dictation previously but have also installed the off-line feature which will allow me to not have to send information to Apple to be converted to text I would be curious if you find any information regarding this apparent bug. this is a feature that can be very beneficial to those of us who are blind. It would be nice to have information regarding this problem. let us know what you find out. My external hard drive attached to airport extreme often disappears
Hi Listers, I have an external 1TB hard drive I had actually bought through Apple, that is attached via usb hub to my airport extreme. It is partitioned so that one volume is my backup volume for time machine and the other just a place I store data. Not infrequently, my time machine reports that it cannot find the disk. When I open finder and look for the hard drive myself and the volumes, once I reach airport extreme in the sidebar and vo+right arrow to the browser section, my volumes are not there. The only thing I can do is to disconnect the usb cable and reconnect it for the hard drive to be visible in finder again. I had done a lot of research before I went down the route of attaching a hard drive to airport extreme in this way and it should work in theory. Has anybody else noticed this behaviour? It’s annoying because I sometimes do not know whether time machine is backing up as it should or not, and then when I check manually when the last backup was performed, it might be a few days prior. Is the way I have my external hard drive connected unstable in your opinion? I know that Apple prefers us all to have the time capsule but that’s expensive. I wonder whether I’d be better off attaching my external drive manually once a day to the usb port on the computer and backing up in this way. The requirements for disk space and ram depend non the windows version. XP doesn’t need much, you could probably do with even 256MB and a couple gigs of disk space, but I’d recommend at least 512 or a gig of ram. Newer windows need more, for vista and seven you need a gig of ram and 20 gigs of disk space just for the OS. As far as resource usage, of course it has to come from somewhere, so they won’t be available on the mac. The good thing though is that the settings you choose for the VM aren’t immediately allocated. So, if your VM has 2 gigs of ram, but the VM is only using half of it, then vmware won’t use those 2 gigs as long as it’s not needed. The same holds for the CPU, where you can also specify how many cores a VM can use. But again it won’t immediately use all of it. For disk space, you can choose if you want it to already allocate the space (EG, a 20 gig virtual disk would already be 20 gigs), or not (so then that file wouldn’t take up the space if it’s not being used). For games, you can play audio games and anything light. But if you want to play main stream games that use a lot of video card resources, you’ll be better off setting up a bootcamp partition, so the game can use all the resources of your mac. You can use the upgrade version. The way to do it, when you first install, skip the activation step. You will then have an unregistered version of Windows on your computer. Then, insert your upgrade disk again and run the setup .exe. This is where you will do the Windows upgrade. You already have a version of Windows on your machine, and this time you can enter your license number and all will be fine. Can't Access Menu Bar in VMWare Fusion 6. Urgent issue!
Hello Everyone, Has anyone out here experienced a problem in VMWare Fusion 6 where the menu bar can't be accessed using the VO+M command? Instead, VoiceOver says menu closed and there is no way to access the Virtual Machine menu to do important troubleshooting things like restart or shut down windows. Hi Darrell, have you tried CTRL F2? This Command is actually not a voiceover command as such but more of a universal global command for the OS. I actually now prefer using this command rather than the Voiceover one now. Give it a go and I hope it works. Hello Daniel, Unfortunately, we have already tried Control+F2. When she presses that keystroke in VMWare Fusion, nothing happens. Does anyone know if there's another way to pull down VMWare's menus, or is there a way to restart / shutdown the Windows Session that does not require accessing the menu bar? Hi, Does she have Fusion in her menubar? If so, she could command-tab out of it and close Windows from there. If not, she could simply close Fusion with command-q, and re-open it when needed. I would guess that doing command-w from the Windows desktop would work too. Is she in Unity or full screen mode? Maybe she needs to play about with those settings to see if anything fixes it. I wouldn't quit vmware fusion without shutting down Windows first. I haven't used version 6 yet nbut I found in 5 that if I got that menu behavior and did it again (vo-m) it usually opened. But you usually should be able to shut down Windows by the normal procedure within Windows itself and then you can just quit vmware fusion if you wish. I've never shut down Windows using the menus except when for some reason it wouldn't shut down proprerly just by the usual procedure within Windows itself. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. Mack Compatible Assistive Technology Software for Mac or Iphone
Hello everyone, I will be starting a work experience soon, but I need to be able to read printed materials. I really don't want to go back to using JAWS or a Windows computer unless I absolutely have to. I was wondering if there is OCR software for the Mack, what scanner I have to get, etc. If there is nothing for the Mack, is there an app for the iPhone where I can take a picture of the document and my phone reads the material to me? thanks for your help. It'll cost you around $90 - $100 U.S. As far as scanners go, There is a listing of supported scanners on the Abbyy.com website, and it is extensive. Basically, any scanner that apple sells for the mac is supported by finer reader. I use an Epson perfection series scanner with good result, which I picked up a few years back for $120. I don't suppose you're in full-screen mode are you? the menu isn't available in full screen. Try pressing command control F. That's a toggle that'll kick you in or out of full-screen mode. Hello, Here is a solution for the iPhone. The 2 OCR apps that work well and are accessible are Prizmo and Text Grabber. For best results, these OCR apps accuracy is at its best when used in conjunction with the StandScan Pro. You can find the StandScan Pro at www.standscan.com. The price is 29. Although others have commented on the fact that it is made out of a thick carboard, it works quite well. Currently, I don't have access to get the URL for the OCR apps, but you can search in the app store for the info. HTH. I've had the same thing happen, also with offline dictation enabled. For me, though, the problem is much worse as I lose all audio, or perhaps my Mac Mini just locks up, I'm not sure which. Either way, I avoid dictation nowadays, which is too bad as it really is nice when it works. I can go back to online dictation to see if the problem persists, but I hate either not having anything I say get transcribed, or having to do a hard shut down of the entire Mac, just because Dictation messed up. Thanks Alex for confirming it's not just me. Wish it was, as it blows me away how Apple could release such a poor version of dictation for the Mac that knocks out VO. It really does make me question Apple and accessibility. I know we are pretty close to the bottom of the food chain, but seriously how much testing goes in to something like this, as having dictation causing VO to crash is a pretty serious bug. Fortunately for me I don't really like dictating, so will just move on without it. Hi, Unless this is the newest Airport Extreme, using an external USB drive off an Airport Extreme is not supported with time machine. That said, the dismounting of the drive from the finder is the real problem. I have an Other World Computing Mercury Elite Pro Al enclosure hooked up to an Airport Extreme that has no random unmounting issues. That uses a 3Tb WD Red drive. I would suggest you see if another computer can mount the airport shared drive without you unplugging the drive from the airport. I suspect what you are seeing is a spin down problem with the drive itself, but it’s hard to diagnose without additional information. Hi, The two options are Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner. Both interfaces are very accessible and easy to use. I give Carbon Copy Cloner the edge, but I also used to give Super Duper the edge many years ago. As for how it works, you need to provide an administrator password before you start the copy process. That way, it can run as admin and avoid any permissions issues. The copy process does no harm to your drive beyond normal wear and tear. I do suggest you format a new drive with Disk Utility and enable the security option to do a one pass write with zeros. This forces the drive to actually write something to any block, thus if an error is detected, that block will be skipped. Copying and pasting the windows support drivers
Hi all: Believe me or not, I failed to copy something from mac, am very very new, but it's a very stupid question, I need to copy the windows support from my mac, to install it on my bootcamp, I find the windows support folder and I hit command c, then I go to my USB flash, and wi hit command v, nothing happened, don't know why. If it's too large, will Mavericks tell me? And my flash has 24 gb free. So please, tell me what's going on. Apple Airport Time Capsule
Hey all, I wanted to see if people who have Apple Time Capsule think it is worth the price. I am finally again looking at getting an external hard drive, and could pick a 3 TB drive up for about $140, so the $299 for a 2TB Time Capsule makes me curious what is the big advantage to it? Is it the wireless connection for back up is so much faster than USB, but wouldn't it being wireless make it far less secure? Just wanted to see the group's thoughts before I make my decision. One thing to keep in mind, however, is you cannot use a Time Capsule for bootable duplicates/clones of your disc. Thanks Nick, I really appreciate your feedback. Guess I am going to go with the less expensive USB or Fire Wire since that is what my iMac has drive. I got a Seagate a year ago but sent it back as it wouldn't properly mount, and after reading all the reviews for Seagate external drives, mounting on a MAc still seems to be an issue with them, so looks like I will go LAcie or Passport as I have heard good things about both of them. Hey guys. As was already said here, these shortcuts are specific to twitter.com site only. They really become handy when you have to use the web site and not any other client, like Yorufukurou. We are lucky with VOiceOver and Safari because we do not have to deal with virtual buffers and alike. We are able to take advantage of those shortcuts as soon we land on the web site. Time Capsule Backup - VMWare Fusion
Hi I have VMWare Fusion installed on a LaCie Rugged 120GB SSD. I did a recovery from Time Capsule to an tme and date before i installed VMWare Fusion. When i booted into Mountain Lion after restore i could not open the Windows 7 because there was no longer a VMWare Fusion to load it. I installed VMWare Fusion again. Could not use any of the options to bring the old Windows 7 installation onboard again. So, i just installed VMWare Fusion. Then, i loaded the program file Windows 7 (old fusion) and this time Mountain Lion could open it and it worked with Window Eyes 8.3 as last time. Have to check, yes, 8.3 I did not know if we could move VMWare Installations with us on a external device and just install VMWare Fusion on an another mac. Since i could do it on an earlier version of Mountain Lion from a backup, i presume it is possible to take it with us and use it on another mac. Not exactly plug and play, but not so problematic either. I don`t understand how to configure a standard apple usb keyboard with numeric keys to work in Windows 7 with Window Eyes. Does anybody have an step by step guide saved or any tips? For instance, which profile should i use in VMWare, preferences, keyboardmouse, profile ? If i want to use an apple standard usb keyboard with numeric keys. Not in unity mode. A relief that Time Capsule seems to be a very good backup solution. You are right, the other partition with Boot Camp was not accessible (toned down). Do you mean that it is possible to configure Time Capsule to backup only the Boot Camp partition to an attached external usb disc? In fact, i am pretty sure that i saw both the Lacie and Boot Camp and McIntosh HD as possible target disks, but to get Time Machine to understand this, time will tell. I have external Lacie SSD and MyPassport spinning HD. Both works fine with mac. Hi: I received a 3TB TC for Christmas and love it! The router is fast, and time machine does a good job backing up the Mac. I'd also buy a USB external drive and use carbon copy cloner to make a bootable disk. I have used the browser and food network or the pioneer woman and had great success with save recipe. I use the browser and go to the recipe I want then vo left arrow to save recipe and select it. then it pops up with name of recipe and prompts to make sure all info is correct. It usually is for both those sites and I change whatever needs to be then select done. It then appears in my recipes . Make sure you select which categories you want and it will add the recipe there. The developer is nice and responsive if you email them for help. I agree sarah, Very easy and love the app. Its completely accessible and I am copying my recipes from rtf files over into it but also adding recipes from pioneer woman and food network and may venture to other sites as well. Hi There, I am still having difficulty with using the browser and clipping the recipe. I have read the manual earlier today and thought I had it licked, but no cigar. this is what I have done. I open up the browse section of Paprika. I open the website, which I am using Epicurious and find the recipe. I have either highlighted the recipe name or opened the recipe, but I can't find a way to save the recipe to Paprika. Hence, I copied the recipe and placed it into a document and saved it to the computer. The copy/paste method will work, but it would be nice if I have located a recipe through the browser to be able to import it directly into Paprika as it is stated in the manual that this can be done. I just haven't found the magic keystroke yet to accomplished this. any suggestion on how to get this to work would be fantastic. Thanks in advance.
