notification center
Hello All: Ever since the last update of Mavericks, the notification center has been driving me mad. No matter how many times I check do not disturb it keeps disturbing me with this and that alert that I don't care about. Also, I am getting these messages that say bright, crisp, no faces. Re: notification center
Jean, I think somebody answered your question about the image reports of no faces earlier. It's in the VO Utility / speech / help tags. By setting it to do nothing, help tags, which is what those image descriptions are, will not be announced. You won't get any other help tags announced either though. I think there is a keystroke to have the help tag spoken on the fly which I can't find right now. I can't answer your question about the notification centre, sorry. Re: numbers voiceover: moving sheets?
Yep, arranging tables is mostly just for sighted people. It also changes what order VoiceOver comes across them, but this isn't really that important for VoiceOver users. I know, many of my personal spreadsheets apparently used to look awful and make no sense to sighted people. Of late I've been making spreadsheets for sighted people or spreadsheets at work which have to be viewed by sighted people and look professional. I've become pretty good at ensuring that at least most things are visible, and often even visibly appealing. The best tip is to make sure the columns are wide enough for their content, as this does not happen automatically. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Question: How to get to mail tokens
Hi Jim, From your description, it seems as if you might not have been following those detailed instructions exactly. It might seem a little pedantic, but I suggest you go back and have another attempt at following those numbered step-by-step directions very closely. Slight changes can make the whole thing not work properly. Also, to clarify, you'll only get additional options such as to and from if you've entered a contacts token. If you just type someone's name and press return, you won't enter a contacts token. You need to start typing the name, and then use the down arrow (with QuickNav turned off) to select the contact's name and then press return. If you just type the name and press return this will just search for that text in any field, and won't give you additional options. Once you have entered a contacts token, you can then left arrow past it and then down arrow to get a menu of additional options. Good luck. Re: Question: How to get to mail tokens
Hi Nic! I can't remember which message but some time back I did state that I followed the directions from one of the messages and did not get the same results. At this point it is faster for me to use spotlight to find what I need. I think it is quicker and just easier now to not have to spend time trying to figure this out. What To Do If You Are Recieving Unwanted iMessages
Hello All, This is for all iOS iMessage users. Yesterday, I posted about what to do if you are an A T T customer and you receive unwanted SMS SPAM. Now of course, in iOS 7.x, you can block the offending sender of incoming SMS messages be they standard text messages or iMessages directly from your iOS device. If that works for you, great. As for me, however, merely blocking something locally on my device does not seem to make me feel better. That is why I did some research and discovered the short code to which A T T customers are supposed to forward their unwanted SPAM in order to give A T T a heads-up on who is gaming its network. What I did not mention in my previous post on this, is that, apparently, none of the US wireless providers have any control over what is sent via iMessage. Consequently, if you forward an iMessage to the A T T SPAM alert short code number (and I assume this is true for Verizon Wireless as well) you will receive a thank you message requesting that you reply with either the telephone or short code number of the offending spammer. What? Many iMessages don't display a phone number; in fact, they most often display an email address. Consequently, if you are receiving unwanted iMessage SPAM, and you want to report it to Apple in addition to blocking is locally on your device, you must do the following in accordance with Apple's instructions. Interestingly, I checked with approximately 20 or so people, today, all of whom use iMessage on three of the US's four major wireless carriers including A T T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint. All of the T-Mobile customers I know are Android users. Hmm. Anyway, many of those with whom I contacted reported either having received their first iMessage SPAM or an increase in the number of iMessages received, this week. But I digress. Getting back on point, I followed the instructions below in order to report my iMessage SPAM and now I feel much better. I hope that after reading the following instructions, you will feel better as well. Mark From Apple: Reporting unwanted messages sent from iMessage If you're seeing unwanted iMessages (spam) in Messages app, you can report those to Apple. To report unwanted iMessage messages to Apple, please send an email with the following details to: imessage.s...@icloud.com 1. Include a screenshot of the message you have received. 2. Include the full email address or phone number you received the unwanted message from. 3. Include the date and time that you received the message. To take a screenshot: To take a screenshot on your iOS device, press and release the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. The screenshot is added to your Camera Roll album. To take a screenshot in OS X, simultaneously press the Command + Shift and the number 3 key on your keyboard. The screenshot is saved to your Desktop folder. Additional InformationNote: Report unwanted (spam) SMS and MMS type messages to your cellular provider. Contact your carrier for additional details. Look in the Messages conversation thread to determine if a message was sent via iMessage. Messages sent via iMessage are labeled as iMessage above the message in the text field. SMS and MMS type messages read Text Message instead. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. My thoughts on OpenOffice for Os X
Hello everybody It seems OpenOffice for Os X is pretty awful. It's unstable. VoiceOver would not let me hear back what I've typed. It could sure do with room for improvement. Finally you cannot press buttons in the normal way; you have to press space once the button is in the VoiceOver cursor. I since quickly uninstalled it by simply moving the app to the Trash and will go back to Pages/Numbers/Keynote as the office suite for the mac. -- Christopher Hallsworth Student at the Hadley School for the Blind www.hadley.edu -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Typing On The IPhone's On-Screen Keyboard
Hi Everyone, I was recently having a discussion with a friend about how to type on the on-screen keyboard of the iPhone. Personally, I don't particularly like to use a special program for this like, for instance, mBraill or Fleksy. I just want to use the regular keyboard. Dictation can be useful, but of course, sometimes, it's just nice to be able to type something relatively privately. I have built up some speed over the past 3 years, but I would like to get faster. I generally hold my phone in my left hand, and use my right index finger to type, anchoring my thumb down where the connector is at the bottom of the phone. I'm interested to know how others who type using the regular on-screen keyboard, enter your text. I do happen to use Touch Typing mode, but I would also be interested in what typing mode you use. And, does anyone else besides me just use the regular on-screen keyboard for their typing needs? Thanks! Re: Typing On The IPhone's On-Screen Keyboard
Desi, I am not the best typist but have found the touch typing mdoe is much more efficient and I like it for that reason. I do nothing special, either hold the phone in left hand or put it on the table. I will at osme point use my braille display when I want to do a lot of typing for that will be even more efficient. Something that may work well also would be to put the phone in landscape mode so the keys are not so close together. Quote of the nanosecond . . . Re: Typing On The IPhone's On-Screen Keyboard
I feel completely comfortable typing on my iPod with the onscreen keyboard. I don't think it's a practical way to do a lot of typing, as in editing documents, at least not for me. it will always be significantly slower than a keyboard. For most everyday uses, such as entering passwords and typing messages, it works just fine for me. I use touch typing mode. When I do a lot of editing, I use my Braille display keyboard. If I didn't have a braille display, I'd get a Bluetooth keyboard. Teresa On the other hand, there are different fingers. Re: Typing On The IPhone's On-Screen Keyboard
I must be in the minority, I do have a small bluetooth keyboard I got from the AT Guys last summer at the NFB convention, and occasionally use Fleksy and dictation, but for the most part I use the on screen Keyboard in normal mode. That is I place my pointer finger on the letter I want to type and then use a split tap with my second finger to place the letter in my text or what ever I'm typing. Re: Typing On The IPhone's On-Screen Keyboard
I prefer the iPhone's keyboard to that of the iPad, just because the keyboard on the pad is more spread out. I use my right ;index and middle finger, depending on which side of the keyboard the next letter or symbol will be located. I am not as fast as my sighted wife, AMy Three Deer, but I'm good enough that I can type out middle-length E-mails or notes or whatever. I use Dictation for anything very complicated, though. Interestingly, for those of you who may be using hearing aids with a Bluetooth connection to a streaming device, such as the Phonak Com Pilot ((tm)) and accompanying hearing aids, the newest generation of Com Pilot streamer is smart enough to recognize that it's connecting to Mark's iPhone, and when I use dictation, Voiceover uses the channel usually used for receiving incoming phone calls. I find that the whole process of typing feedback over the BT connection is much faster when this secondary channel is utilized, but it can be slow if you're using the streamer in a music mode. The tech really has come a long way. * Mark BurningHawk Baxter * AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 * MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com * My home page: * http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group.
