Re: safari doesn't open

2015-06-16 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi Chris,

Since this is a fresh install of the entire OS, I’d assume that it would
default to the main apple page. If it did, for some insane reason, keep my
usual prefs, I have a blank page set to open as my default home page.

I’ll go and delete the plist file for Safari and see if that helps, it probably
won’t hurt at this point..
Thanks!

How to Resolve Keychain Error 25320

2015-06-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

The following comes to us courtesy of SimpleHelp.com

While I have not experienced this error, personally, I thought I'd post it
to the list just in case you come across it.

How to Resolve Keychain Error 25320
Posted: 15 Jun 2015 03:00 AM PDT

This very brief tutorial will show you how to fix the error: "Access to
this item is restricted. (-25320)" you may receive when trying to access
secure information in Keychain on your Mac.

There are two solutions - one is to try and run a quick "repair" - the other
is to simply reboot.

1.
The error typically shows itself when you try to access something secure
within your Keychain - like a password.

2.
The error message itself, in a very un-Mac-like fashion, is completely
cryptic with no suggestion as to what to do next.

3.
Let's fix it. Select Keychain Access from the Menu Bar, and then Keychain
First Aid

4.
First enter your password, then select Repair (skip Verify) and finally,
Start.

5.
If the Keychain First Aid tool finds any errors, it will report and then fix
them. At this point, you should have no problem using Keychain again.
If the Keychain First Aid tool does not find any errors, it will report "No
problems found" before the last line, Repair completed. Proceed with the
next step.

6.
Close all open Apps (saving work when appropriate) and reboot your Mac. When
it starts again, you'll be able to access Keychain without any problems.

Re: Attention Any Americans Who Have Applied On-line for Jobs through usajobs.gov *urgent help; needed*

2015-06-16 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Eileen,
For me personally, speaking only for myself i consider low graphics
environments to mirror mobile ones sometimes.
these are browsers like links, and elinks, still under development on the
open source side, but likely needing terminal to run Mac wise. I did not
use a mac for my test. I was stunned that lynx, also still under
development, generated an access denied error.
That might explain some of the other problems as well. If the people
maintaining these sites are not thinking strict keyboard response, i. e.
they are using java scripting without making sure the java scripting still
works with a keyboard, then many access platforms will have issues.
Someone else will have to guide you on using a low graphics browser
within the apple arena.

Your comment on Social security had me wondering in return.
I am rather surprised that the organization who spearheaded the
requirement that the Social Security Administration must provide
communications in various formats are not paying attention.
SSa has changed to some ..non document thing that requires some sort of
player software instead of the sort of rtf and readme.txt files that were
there before. The cd sent is not even formatted as a data one anymore.
Someone is not keeping track of how things are implemented in the long
run.

Long answer to your short question smiles.
Kare

I'm betting that the distortion has more to do with the tiny speaker than
with a problem with the voice. I actually think Apple's done a good job
of pumping the sound out, and some distortion, IMO is inevitable under
the circumstances. The other thing I'd mention is that you're listening
to the voice for much shorter bits of language than you would on a Mac or
an iPhone, so something that might really grate on your nerves if you're

Hi Christine,

To answer your question, no. I never pursued contacting anyone. If this is an
accessibility issue, then maybe one of the blind national organizations may
need to be contacted. I'm wondering how many more blind or visually impaired
individuals have attempted to apply for a Federal position only to be
confronted with an inaccessible website to submit the application. It was
interesting to me when I wrote my senators that Senator Finestein took the time
to actually read what I sent her regarding Social Security, but Senator Boxer
was a form response. Let me know who to send my concerns about this. It takes a
village to get Washington to recognize a real problem and in my eyes
discrimination.

Thanks.

2015-06-16 Thread Karen Lewellen

Actually Jason, your suggestion flipped a switch.
My sister has been a federal staffer for decades for the Center for
disease control.
Anyway I popped over to the usajobs.gov site in a low graphics, but java
friendly browser.

There is a section labeled "for people with disabilities,"
under this section, there is a directory of the sccp staff by
department. these people are specifically designated to facilitate
application problems in their respective agencies. Christine, I do not
recall the position you are seeking, but perhaps this is a direct door?

Hope this helps,
Kare

Christine,

There is a reason in the Liaison case. i did not understand she was
blind, but deaf or a combination, the office of public engagement helps
facilitate communications for Ms. Gordon. there are some things not best

I would say the same for your representatives...especially the one with
the problem form. Given anyone can send an email from anywhere, sometimes
putting human presence to problems makes a difference.
As an interesting question, were you able to test things in a low graphics

I agree that it is a shame that we have standards that are supposed to insure federal

Since the USAJOBS site was "updated" in either late 2011 or early 2012, it has

OK, yeah, that is kind of what I had suspected. I figured that there

No. You only get the voice from switching the languages, so if you switch it
to British English, you get Daniel or Tom, whoever it is, Australian is
Karen, etc.

RE: Installing a virtual mac under Vmware

Hi,

One thing you can do is use the fn key on the keyboard with the f5 key and this
works fine for me.

The two options I can see:

1. Remap the Mac host keystroke to something else, if this can be done under
keyboard prefence.
2. Use another keyboard and modify the VMWare config file so the 2nd keyboard
is fully controlled by the guess OS (your Test Mac os). This is what I do for
Windows in the past. When using 7.1 Pro I have had issues with it not working
as it is documented. Looking into it still.

Re: does any one know much a apple extreme router costs?

2015-06-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Depending on your currency, they're about $200 or so. Yes, they'll handle your
MacBook Air, your Mini and about 48 other devices simultaneously and still get
good performance. The newer MacBook Airs with the 802.11 AC connectivity will
actually get 1 GB network speed out of this device. They are a little more
expensive than some other access points, but their performance is excellent.
They are also "extremely" easy to set up, pun intended.

I'm betting that the distortion has more to do with the tiny speaker than
with a problem with the voice. I actually think Apple's done a good job
of pumping the sound out, and some distortion, IMO is inevitable under
the circumstances. The other thing I'd mention is that you're listening
to the voice for much shorter bits of language than you would on a Mac or

impossible to apply. I do know of one individual who is a high partial who
managed to complete the application process, but had indicated to me that it
was extremely hard to get it completed and she is in the assistive technology
field. I know that the Federal government should be taken to task on this. I
know I haven't been much assistance, only to know that there are others in the
same boat as you. The positions I have attempted to apply for will only accept
online applications. It's a pity because there are many of us who would make
excellent employees and are qualified for the jobs they post.

Good luck and if I hear more tips on how to apply for a Federal position, I'll
pass them on to you.

I don't have an Apple Watch, nor have actually seen one in person, so

I'm betting that the distortion has more to do with the tiny speaker than

the circumstances. The other thing I'd mention is that you're listening

Attention Any Americans Who Have Applied On-line for Jobs through usajobs.gov *urgent help; needed*

2015-06-16 Thread Christine Grassman
Dear All:
I am at my wit’s end. I am using a MacBook Air, running Yosemite, and I have
tried Safari and Internet Explorer 10. I attempted to apply to an on-line job
on a federal government website specifically for that purpose.
1. When I used Safari, I kept getting messages that it quit unexpectedly and
either hit Ignore and things were as they had been before this happened, or I
had to hit “reload page”.
In addition, every time I tried to execute the last task required, it would not
go through, yet the system said I had executed the task. (I checked with a
Human Resources person who indicates that none of my attempts have gotten
through.) I also kept getting warnings that I had no documents saved to my
account, even though I definitely do and they were actually being listed, and
the correct one was selected.

2. When I used Internet Explorer 10, I did not get the quitting problem, but
had the same problem with the same warning that I had no documents uploaded to
my account, despite the fact that they were listed and the correct one
selected. Again, I could not get past a certain point in the process.

3. I ad my daughter, also blind and using a Windows PC with Firefox, fill out
the application. It seemed to go smoothly; we got to “Finish” and received a
message to check my status for updates. When I checked my status, it said
“Received”. However, the Human Resources specialist checked last evening and
this morning, and my application is nowhere to be found.

So:
a. Has anyone successfully used a federal government website; I am especially
interested in hearing from anyone who used
usajobs.gov specifically.

b. Can anyone fathom what might be going on? Is there anything in particular I
should try, or anything I should bring to the attention or suggest to the Help
desk?
C. They apparently work with Career Connector, overseen by Monster.com
. Although I saw a list that stated that Safari is a
compatible browser, Monster.com’s help desk said Safari was not compatible,
which is why I used Internet Explorer 10.
Just a note: I did reboot several times, emptied my cache and history, and
refreshed the screen after going into the user agent menu and suggesting a
different browser.
I would truly appreciate help here; if I have to write to an HR person for each
and every federal job application, things are going to become very tedious very
fast, and frankly, there is no earthly reason why I should not be able to do
this with commonly used technology.

Thanks so much in advance.
Christine

Re: Taking Video for Youtube

2015-06-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Firstly, those videos are wrong. You never ever should eat a mike unless
you're looking for a real muddy sound with nothing but low ends, and
basically lots of clipping. Yeah, you can use a limiter, or a compressor,
and maybe cut out some of it, and then use an EQ to roll off some of the
mud, but even still, it's not going to sound very good. Depending on the
effect you're looking for, generally with mikes like the snowball, etc. you
want to be about 6 inches. Put your thumb on your bottom lip, then extend
your other fingers out. Touch the tip of your pinky to your microphone,
while still leaving the tip of your thumb on the same hand on your bottom
lip. That's how I generally teach my students to start gaging it. OK, you
may have to back off a little more, or come in a little bit more, but
generally, that should get you in the ball park.

I've mostly been recording acoustic instruments, so I get the mic right up
to the sound hole, or the resonator, etc. certain demo videos on YouTube
have suggested that you really got a "eat them like" to get a good clean
sound.

The original poster has it correct, you can just Option-click the Check for

by others, shift+Space on that button is a substitutes that works, in both Mac

Caitlyn,

Quick question actually. What do you have Safari normally set to open when
you launch it? Like, are you going to your top sites page, a blank page, or
an actual web ADDRESS? If an actual web page, which one? Google? Or what,
exactly? I ask as I am wonderring if the page it is trying to load might be
crashing Safari.

good advice but don't forget someone can help you with setting the camera
via Skype. they don't have to be in the room with you. my friend robin did that
with me. we figured out how i should set my laptop whether i was sitting at a
table in a chair or leaning back. i love quick time. its much more basic. you
press record and then stop. what i like to do is record several small videos as
its easier to get them right than recording one long video. then i use the add
clip feature in the edit menu. when i have all the clips tied together I go to
files and do an export. then i have one whole movie file. as for youtube i
record in hd but then i do a second export to 480 p because it doesn't hurt the
viewer's ability to enjoy the video and it allows for much quicker uploads and
smoother playing on mobile devices. the window is about 530 380 . hope this
helps, max

• Go to the Finder.
• Up to Go in the menubar.
• With VO keys pressed, go down to the Library item, then press return.
• navigate to the Preferences folder.
• look through the list for the com.apple.iMovie.plist file and Trash it.

When you open iMovie the next time it should rebuild that pList file and

Yes, You're right. Normally it in fact should be possible, if you do a full

My memory got a bit clouded because last week I got myself into a state where
DFU mode was the only way out. It's certainly useful to know about DFU mode in
case that kind of thing occurs.

Re: weird issue: iTunes annoumcenets

2015-06-16 Thread Alex Hall
Probably a notification. Open your Notification Center (it's in the Extras
menus, or do a 2-finger swipe left with TrackPad Commander off). Find the
Preferences button near the end of the resulting window and press it. In the
System Preferences panel that appears, find iTunes in the list of apps, and use
the radio buttons to select "None" for the notification style. That should stop
it from speaking, but use the "include in Notification Center" checkbox if you
don't want these items cluttering up your notifications at all.

weird issue: iTunes annoumcenets

2015-06-16 Thread Littlefield, Tyler
Hey all,

I’m sorry for the multiple questions. I’m starting to use my Mac more because
everyone at my job uses them and it’s security policy yada yada. I am a bad
employee though and listen to music while I work. For whatever reason Voiceover
seems to want to announce the name/artest of a song every time it changes. is
there a way to disable that?

thanks,

Re: I can't find my VMware fusion 7 download

2015-06-16 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
If you have your VMWare product key, then you can simply download the binaries
from the VMWare site. Here’s a link to the Fusion 7 downloads:
https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/info/slug/desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_fusion/7_0

It used to be the case that you also had to log in with your VMWare account
credentials—those you used to purchase the product with—but that no longer
appears to be the case, for whatever reason. Hopefully I’m no exception.

Re: Mission Control Was: disabling ctrl+left and right in vmware fusion

2015-06-16 Thread Alex Hall
It's a way to get an overview of all your desktops and open apps. It shows
every window open in every app, for instance, so you can go right to that
window without switching to the app and using cmd-accent a bunch of times. I
never use Mission Control personally, but it can come in handy if you have tons
of windows open and don't want to cmd-tab and cmd-accent a lot of times.
Granted, Mission Control may end up being as many keystrokes; you have to bring
it up, interact with the group of apps/windows, then vo-arrow to the one you
want. First letter navigation doesn't even do anything in there, unfortunately.

I can't find my VMware fusion 7 download

2015-06-16 Thread Ted Phillips
Hi all. Last night, I bought VMware fusion 7 so I could run windows on my mac
while still having my mac active. The problem I’m having is that I can’t seem
to find the download link for VMware fusion 7. I don’t know if I’m just dense
or overlooking something or if it’s due to my inexperience, but I’m sure having
trouble finding and getting the download. If someone can advise me on this, it
would sure be appreciated.

Thanks

That's a system-wide shortcut, one VMWare may not be able to intercept in time.
My only solution--and there may be better ones, as I'm not a VMWare user--is to
disable it completely.

walmart site

2015-06-16 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I was just on the walmart site with my mac and found it to be almost unusable.
I can't do a search and when I do find something it takes me to a table I can't
navigate.
Has anybody else had any trouble with this site? any settings I might try?
Thanks,
Jim

disabling ctrl+left and right in vmware fusion

2015-06-16 Thread Littlefield, Tyler
Hello all,

I’m working with windows in Fusion as well as trying to help a friend. She ran
into an issue where ctrl+left/right switches between windows. Is there a way to
turn this off so that NVDA will navigate word by word instead?

Thanks,

Re: performing an option click on a control?

2015-06-16 Thread Jonathan Mosen
It is not necessary either to be in DFU mode or to press shift+Space on Restore
in order to install a new iOS beta build. The only time one needs to go about
this is when downgrading from a beta to a previous build. This is all covered
in my Testing Testing audio presentation for those who are interested.
The original poster has it correct, you can just Option-click the Check for
Updates button, which brings up an open file dialog. And as has been said here
by others, shift+Space on that button is a substitutes that works, in both Mac
and Windows.

Also, does it let you quit? Probably not, if it's busy. If it doesn't, use
option-cmd-escape to force quit Safari, then open it again. It's possible it
just choked on something the one time you tried to open it, and it hasn't been
able to close since so it can try again.

You can tell VMWare not to send system shortcuts through to the guest, and also
which Command key will be used for host and which for guest. I’ve definitely
got this working in the past to do an OS X guest, so I know it’s possible, it’s
just a wee bit fiddly, is all.

No, when you install the beta version of iOS anything, it’s just like
installing a public nonbeta release. You can install it without removing any
content, as long as you choose to update to, rather than restore to the beta
version.

The only time you have to erase the device is if you wish to downgrade from
the beta back to the current publically available version.

Hope that helps.

Guys,

I just wanted to clear up some miscommunication by Apple. They say on
the developer web site that once you upgrade to I O S 9, you cannot go
back to a previous version, like 8.3. That's utter bullshit from what
so far I can see. Now, I wanna make this very very clear. I am saying
this on the basis of! from what I so? far! can see! Keep that in mind.

I have an I O S device which I did update to I O S 9. I've changed my
mind, and now am deciding not to deploy it to I O S 9 after all. OK, I
have a device I will! be keeping on I O S 9, just not this particular
one. Anyway, the point is, they are only partially right in what
they're saying on their web site from what it seems.

1. If you try to downgrade while your device is normally booted up
into I O S 9, then no. It won't work. That is factually accurate
information which I have verified.

2. If, however Apple has not stopped digitally signing the previous
version of I O S, which of corse, 8.3, they haven't, then you can get
it back as long as before you restore the device, you first get the
device into DFU mode, just as you did when you upgraded to I O S 9. I
tried this, and I O S 8.3 definitely now is downloading. I'll keep you
all posted, and let you all know if I'm able to flash it back, and
restore from my backup. To the best of my knowledge though, this seems
to so far be working.

Re: Taking Video for Youtube

2015-06-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I have a studio mike, but I don't have an extra stand I could put it in, and
even if I did, I really don't want to be moving that mike any more than
necessary, lest I pop the ribbon. This is a Noemen (or however that's spelled,
sorry,) ribbon mike. Definitely not something I want to break, considerred a
church donated it to me, and this sucker from reading online normally ran
around $5000. NO, I didn't say 500, I said $5000. Suffice it to say, I feel
so blessed and greatful to have this thing!

I've done both. I love my blue snowball! The only thing about it I don't like
is the little stand that comes with it is so short that I'm gonna probably now
need to buy a stand that can sit on the desk which is a little taller. Plus,
I'd like something with a boom arm that would bring the mike closer to my
mouth. Don't get me wrong. The switch on the back left side, when flipped to
the 3rd position all the way to the right will turn off all padding, which
makes it quite sensitive, but, it's not as good as just sitting with the mike
six inches or so in front of you. Trust me. It still sounds like I'm off at a
distance, which is not the sound I want.

No, when you install the beta version of iOS anything, it’s just like
installing a public nonbeta release. You can install it without removing any
content, as long as you choose to update to, rather than restore to the beta
version.

The only time you have to erase the device is if you wish to downgrade from

2015-06-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Brent,

My bank unfortunately doesn't yet offer Apple Pay, so I've lamentably not
gotten the ability to try it out yet, which really stinks, but, oh well. As
for your assumption with it wiping the device, yes, it does, but that being
said, if you first make a backup before you go flashing I O S 9, or whatever
versin, as long as you're going to a more recent version, then the backup
should work. Like, if you're on 8.3, and are going to 9, an 8.3 backup
should restore just fine on I O S 9. On the other hand though, if you try
restoring a backup made within 9 to 8.3, I don't know that that would work.

Re: performing an option click on a control?

2015-06-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
What does that do by option clicking check for update? If you're trying to
put another version of I O S on your device, then you need to be option
clicking on the restore button, not the check for update button. And, make
sure before you do this, that your device is in DFU mode.

Subject: performing an option click on a control?

Hi all,
Has anybody ever been able to make option-click work on a control with
voiceover using the trackpad without having to turn off voiceover?

I’m trying to option-click the “check for update” button in iTunes.
Thanks

Re: Installing a virtual mac under Vmware

2015-06-16 Thread Piotr Machacz
I have used vmware to test developer previews of OS X and there is nothing to
worry about. As soon as you tab into the VM so it starts receiving keys,
command F5 is also intercepted by the VM so you can turn VO on without changing
anything. However you will want to turn VO off on the host first because the VO
keyhook is so low level that the VM won’t see any VoiceOver keys otherwise.

Re: Installing a virtual mac under Vmware

2015-06-16 Thread Sean Murphy
The two options I can see:

1. Remap the Mac host keystroke to something else, if this can be done under
keyboard prefence.
2. Use another keyboard and modify the VMWare config file so the 2nd keyboard
is fully controlled by the guess OS (your Test Mac os). This is what I do for
Windows in the past. When using 7.1 Pro I have had issues with it not working
as it is documented. Looking into it still.
