Hey Scot,

Yeah, it's pretty cool. We have the gigabyte option here, too, but we didn't
get it for our rental house. We're thinking about it for our permanent home,
which we'll be moving into in July. Good to know the limits of the Airport. I
was wondering what its cut-off point was.

Cheers,

Donna

Hi Simon,

The way it seems to work is you connect via 1 or 2 gigabit ports to your
network. Either by placing the master unit in router mode and having it handle
the whole internet connection or in bridge mode where it provides the access
point function but you provide your own routing hardware. (This will be my
config). Once connected you start an app on your phone (iPhone in my case but
both platforms are supported) and you configure the first plume device. Then
you power up and add each new device to the mesh. You don’t run physical wires
to anything but the controller or master access point. The rest use backhaul
channels to build the mesh. Once you’ve added all the access points you want,
you get a box of 6 for $320 US, they connect to a cloud application where the
mesh starts to optimize itself. The meshes can either direct connect back to
the control access point and or hop from one to another if that’s more optimal.
The cloud software and access points will steer the clients to the best
frequency and access point based on it’s location with in the mesh. IF 2.4 ghz
suddenly becomes more speedy you’ll drop to 2.4 and then be steered back up to
5 ghz if that returns to normal. Also uses tactics to isolate you from your
neighbors and so forth. Cool stuff. Google is also working in this space as
is Netgear and Niro. Plume seems to rate the highest and perform the best in
testing from the reviews I’ve read though.

Cool stuff. Mesh WiFi was usually the stuff of big enterprises, nice to have
it in the home now.

Re: Download passed iTunes purchases all at once

2017-06-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

That depends on whether that was simply an Apple ID eMail switch, or if it is a
totally different Apple ID than your other one. If the latter, then it's not
really possible, unless you create some sort of Family with the two Apple ID's.
You would need the original to be the parent and the newer one to be a family
member in order for this trick to work.

Re: Blume Wifi

2017-06-10 Thread Scott Granados
Ah I love being on a fiber network. They just rolled out full gigabit where I
live and I upgraded while cutting my bill in half. I have so much on WiFi now
that I really do need a distributed system. Your airport is good up to about
200 megabits. If your service will be faster than that it’s time to update.

Re: VIrtual box and other operating systems than windows.

2017-06-10 Thread Karen Lewellen

Scott,
I am curious, if one uses this program to connect to a different
operating system like Linux, which screen reader is used?

By which I mean does Voiceover work even in these different environments?
Thanks,
Kare

Can this be done without sight?
Thanks in advance.

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

Hi,

It would also defeat the purpose of a secure encryption if automatic login was
available. It would be like locking your car doors but leaving the windows
open.

This is absolutely correct. You cannot navigate in the login window for

window is prompted before the system disk even is accessed. It is a special
login window entirely. So, there is no automatic login for any account and the
option to have VoiceOver speak in the login window is not available for
FileVault login.

Re: Time Machine

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, if your current machine has all of the recent OS upgrades then yes. But
the migration tool does not clone your current computers drive and onto the new
machine. Instead it migrates the users home directories and account
information and Applications in the Applications directory from your current
computer that are not on your new computer. It will also get WiFi and clock
settings from your current computer and move that information into the
appropriate places on the new computer. If you installed an application in a
location other than /Applications, or modified Web Server settings or crontab
entries, don't expect those to be migrated, though they might be migrated.
Almost all settings from System Settings and Application specific settings
panels does get migrated to the new system.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Apple Design Awards.

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I got an announcement of the ADesign Awards from WWDC. In the past I know some
of the designs were highlighting good or innovative solutions to accessibility
on one of the platforms. I did not notice this for the current crop of awards.
Did I miss this, or has anybody out there used one of the ADA applications and
found it compelling as a VoiceOVer user?

It is always good to be aware of the best approaches that are showing up in the
industry.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Text selection in inbox.google.com

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Nimel,

I hremebered one other suggestion, I was going to mention in the previous post.
If you enable gmail iMap and then allow Apple Mail to load your Gmail account,
then you could mark messages you wanted to get selections from and easily find
them in Apple's Mail program where Ann's first set of selection commands will
work with no problem. The iMap protocol when used with Gmail works fairly well
at keeping Mail synchronized between multiple mail clients. One issue I ran
into, is that the iMap protocols on Gmail are defaulted to archiving all
messages even when one uses the delete command. Somewhere in the GMAIL settings
area there is a tag that says archive or delete when a message is deleted from
all mail boxes my memory of this is that Gmail defaults to archive while most
users would prefer that it be "delete".

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

So if I use my Time Machine backup to set up the new Mac, the result will
initially be a Mac identical to the old Mac Mini just without any Bootcamp
partition?
Thank you for your help

Could you please send the exact steps and code to get things going?

Re: Text selection in inbox.google.com

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I assume you are talking about messages that you are reading and attempting to
selecting passages from. If you are using the google shortcut keys "j" "k" "o"
"u" "." to manage your Inbox then I suggest the following:

1. Create an activity for Inbox.
2. In the Inbox activity change the setting under VoiceOVer Utility -> Web
Navigation area:
Always allow keyboard commands to navigate websites checkbox and check this
box.

You will get a warning about how arrow keys will not be sent to Web
Applications, and then the standard selection modes should work e
shift-arrow select character / line
shift-option-arrow select word
control-arrow select to beginning / end of line or document.

Note that Google Web apps have handlers for arrow keys and perhaps even
modified arrow keys and this is why you were not able to use the standard
approach. I am not sure why vo-return does not work. This might be worth
messaging Google Accessibility about.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Migrating from VMWare Fusion to Bootcamp

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Paul,

As already mentioned, I don't believe there is an approach to move a VM to a
dedicated partition, but if there is then it would be either using a Windows or
VM tool, so you might get better answers from a more Windows based group
(GUI-talk?). But then, I find as long as I don't have too many Safari windows
open, that my VM are speedy enough for Outlook and testing accessibility of web
pages with JAWS, WindowEyes or NVDA. Remember especially that on the Macintosh
windows and applications will keep the same documents open when closed and
re-opened. So perhaps just reviewing all open applications/windows might
significantly help your performance if physical memory is running short on your
system.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Time Machine

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
When using bootcamp, TimeMachine and all other MacOS based applications will
not see or react to the Windows partition. You will need to use a Windows
migration tool to move that environment to your new system, after you have
created an appropriate BootCamp partition with the VootCamp tool.

Purchased Movies

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Is there a trick to finding Movies purchased on older system? It is slightly
possible that an inactive mac.com account was used to
purchase the movies, but they certainly did not show up in my family sharing or
in my wife's primary iCloud account

I would prefer to not pay a second time for the purchase.

Thanks,

Re: Terminal and Time Machine

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do. Though all/most of your e-mail
messages should be in individual files scattered around Library/Mail, I would
suggest that using terminal to explore those directories is less than intuitive
especially since you are using Gmail as a provider where they have all mail
functionality and then links to those messages in other folders.
.

If you are looking to recover deleted messages and you are accessing gmail on
iphone/Macintosh Mail applications, and you have not changed Google's iMAP
deletion properties then all of your "deleted" messages are probably in the
archive folder, and there is a reasonable chance that things deleted in the
last 30 days are also in your "Trash" folder in the mail app.

find /volume/backups/mymachine/THeDate/Users/myName/Library/Mail/ -exec grep
"My Search Term" \{\} /dev/null \; could be a starting recipe for what you are
attempting to do.

This is absolutely correct. You cannot navigate in the login window for
FileVault. It doesn't matter how many users have accounts on the system, you
simply type your user name at the prompt and then your password. You cannot
choose the user as you can do with the normal login window. FileVault's login
window is prompted before the system disk even is accessed. It is a special
login window entirely. So, there is no automatic login for any account and the
option to have VoiceOver speak in the login window is not available for
FileVault login.

You know, Apple is not marketing this as a Google or Amazon competitor. I've
seen a couple of articles that I thought made very good points, which is that
there really marketing it towards the audio Lovers. Admittedly quick reviews
have been very impressed with the audio as compared to comparable Sonos
speakers. The media made a mistake when they assumed it was going to be a "Siri
speaker. It is an audio system with Siri which is different from echo Alexa,
which doesn't sound that great or Google home, which ones wants to collect all
your data and has a superior assistant but is not in the same league as the
home pod for audio in terms of the speaker Assistant at the expense of your
privacy. Mark. The other stuff is nice, and might be useful. But this is going
after people who might otherwise paisanos. I for one if this works will buy it
if I'm still around. So this is too expensive

Re: Adjust Voiceover and system volume independently

2017-06-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Hold down VO-cmd and press the left or right arrow keys until you hear VO
announce "volume". Then press VO-cmd-up or down to adjust. This will only
adjust the VO volume, not the System volume with one caveat. When turning it
up, once the VO volume reaches 100%, continuing to increase the VO volume will
also increase the System volume.

Re: best project management system on the mac

2017-06-10 Thread Brandon A. Olivares
I'm a programmer and my company uses Jira. It's pretty ubiquitous out there.
It's not the most accessible, but the IOS app works really well, and it's also
easier to use in Chrome.

I know you can tie it into repositories. Ours is tied into Bitbucket, so that
when you refer to a task in a commit, it'll list all related commits on that
task.

Re: iOS 11 will stop apps like Uber from constantly tracking your location - CNET

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
How precise is the data that the carriers have? I know it is ancient history
now, but I remember when listening to the "Serial" podcast was running the
carrier could only provide data to the tower level. I have also listened to
discussions on the devices used in cars/helicopters that pretend to be cell
towers so that they can receive the responses to AYT messages and get a signal
strength of all reachable devices in range of the device. I believe that was
called a Sting Ray, and there have been court discussions as to the legality of
using these devices.
Probably off topic on this list however.

But i would like to try out som linux distributions in the virtual box.
Can this be done without sight?
 Thanks in advance.

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

This login is a very limited system screen and though it sounds similar to
VoiceOver it is not VoiceOVer It will say user name until you enter a legit
user name something like "john" or "joncohn" and hit enter once your user name
has been accepted it will say password. If you enter the correct password then
in a few seconds you will have all the normal functionality available or else
it will say username or password incorrect.

My experience has been I have to type in all the characters of my username I
have never found a way to do this with arrow keys and certainly the VO style
keys I have found to do nothing.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Connect your iCloud account to Alexa if you can

2017-06-10 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
My suggestion is that you contact either apple or amazon to get help on this.
THe app specific password is an extra security but i hate this crappyness
because its never working on my android device.
I tried it with apple music but ended up having to contact apple and creating a
new apple password and after that things are working.

Re: iOS 11 will stop apps like Uber from constantly tracking your location - CNET

2017-06-10 Thread Scott Granados
Good for stopping Uber but the real privacy invaders (the Government) I’m sure
will have their location access preserved.:)

It’s interesting how hard that location data is to get access too. There’s the
in phone location data but then there’s the network data that Verizon and the
other carriers keep. It’s very hard for a company to get access to this
network data. It’s amazing how under the thumbs of the government Verizon is.
I can’t talk much about it but my first week actually working onsite at Verizon
was the week of the Boston bombing. Let’s just say, eye opening day in
wireless carrier land.

Re: So what do we think of the WWDC new hardware?

2017-06-10 Thread Scott Granados
I bet it will have an accessible setup, that I’m not worried about. Apple has
never let me down in this area.
I’m down to give the speakers a try I just am concerned about Siri but
as Mary and other’s mentioned it’s not a home pod it’s a speaker with some Siri
features. Looking at it that way I may be convinced to at leased audition a
pair.

Re: getting AirPods to switch to different devices?

2017-06-10 Thread Scott Granados
So Alex, it’s like this. If your laptop say already had the channel your watch
wouldn’t high jack the signal unless the laptop was inactive. Remember, the
active device wins and holds its session until it releases and the next device
starts. It actually works very smoothly although I see your point.

 Hey Paul,

Pressing Connect in the bluetooth menu did get them to switch from my
phone to my Mac, but now they won't switch back to my phone unless I
manually go in and switch them.. If that's the way they're supposed to
work, that's fine, but I thought they could switch without the user having
to manually go in and tell them to.
 Cheers,

Re: Blume Wifi

2017-06-10 Thread Scott Granados

Time Machine

2017-06-10 Thread Harry Bell
On my Mac mini 2024 latest OS I have my Mac HD encrypted with FileVault and I
also have Windows 10 running in a Bootcamp partition. I have 2 questions:
Does Time Machine only back up what is in the Mac part of the hard drive, not
the Windows partition?
And when I get a new Mac and set it up to restore from a Time Machine backup of
my Mac Mini, will my new Mac have a Bootcamp partition with Windows 10 or will
Time Machine only restore what was on my macOS part of tge Mac Mini hard drive?
Thanks
Harry

Adjust Voiceover and system volume independently

2017-06-10 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi all
Me again with a small thing, once again I can’t remember how I managed to set
this up on my iMac a few years ago.
Where is the setting to adjust the system volume and voiceover volume
indapendant from each other? I looked all over and can not find it, I even
tried looking on my iMac but can’t find where it was set up.

Thanks

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-10 Thread Nickus de Vos
My sighted help could only access the password field when VO was switched off,
but if I switch vo again, not even the sighted person can navigate to the
username or password field.

 hi,

Further to John's note, usually, VO is not active, nor available, at the
initial login screen when File Vault is enabled. You can press cmd-f5 to
try to turn on VO, you should get a single tone, at this point, as John
mentioned, just type your username and press return. If it accepts your
username, two tones will sound meaning that it's ready for your password.
In my case, once I start entering my password, a tone is sounded for each
key-press. After you finish the password, press return and you should
hear three tones if the password was accepted. Your Mac will then start
up normally. You can then log off and on with the normal login screen
most of the time, unless your machine is restarted or shutdown at which
time you'll hear the good old tone once again.

Be sure you press command-F5 to turn on VoiceOver. It will ask for your

Then, press enter and it will prompt you for your password. Type that and

RE: VIrtual box and other operating systems than windows.

2017-06-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
I dind't use the command line
I used only the GUI,
 This was with sierra
I setup a sierra image for machiens at work on to a thunderbolt external drive,
Sierra as the host machine and then a VB of windows 7 pro and then a second of
windows 10 enterprise.
There was one step that I did need sighted assistance but I'm sure it wasn't
the OS selection.

I tried again, but the thing is I can't seem to move around using voice over on
the login screen, or it doesn't seem to move around anyway.
All VO keep saying no matter what I press is username, then if I switch VO off
and on again, it just says username.

I tried navigating like you suggest, but nothing works and I have to switch off
VO before my sighted assistance can navigate to my login name.

When you press Cmd-Option-k to go to the next comment or change, if it’s a

Download passed iTunes purchases all at once

2017-06-10 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi all
Is there a way on Mac in iTunes to select to download all passed purchases all
at once? Currently I have to select each artist and then click download, it
will just be so much easier if there is a “download all” somewhere, or a way to
select all and then click download.

Re: VO bug logging in with Filevolt enabled

2017-06-10 Thread Nickus de Vos
I tried again, but the thing is I can't seem to move around using voice over on
the login screen, or it doesn't seem to move around anyway.
All VO keep saying no matter what I press is username, then if I switch VO off
and on again, it just says username.

I tried navigating like you suggest, but nothing works and I have to switch off
VO before my sighted assistance can navigate to my login name.

RE: VIrtual box and other operating systems than windows.

2017-06-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Anders,

Yes I've used it a few times now to setup windows vm
S,

One for windows 7 and for windows 10,

I know there were a couple of steps that weren't easy to select the OS for
install but I know it worked for me in the end.

Infact I believe it involved the selection of the os didn't happen till after I
created the drive for install
But I'll have to waittill I'm back at work on Monday to have another look at it.

Hi!
Since Simon Fogarty here on this list mentioned that VirtualBox was accessible
i thought i would give it a try today.
It seems to work but when selecting an operating system i can only see windows
and no other systems to select from.
But i would like to try out som linux distributions in the virtual box.
Can this be done without sight?
Thanks in advance.

RE: Migrating from VMWare Fusion to Bootcamp

2017-06-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi harry,

Yeah you don't need to hold the option key down,

I use bootcamp on my mac book air and when it boots in to windows 10 I use
jaws as my screen reader and on the task bar or sys tray there is a boot camp
option which when I click or enter on boot camp options open and then I up
arrow to the start in mac os option is there so I enter twice and the machine
starts up in to the Mac OS,
To restart into my windows machine I go into system preferences and under
start menu I select bootcamp and the restart and then it restarts into windows,

No having to use Option key or not deal with vo or jaws, I always have a
screen reader talking to me.

I have installed Windows 10 in bootcamp on my Mac Mini so I hold down the
OPTION Key as it boots up, then I get a screen where the left icon is MacOS
with an arrow under it and I have to arrow right once to select Windows. There
is no voiceover available at this point but now I know what to do I no longer
need help. If I don't hold down Option, it boots into Windows which is puzzling
but not important.

iOS 11 will let you record your iPhone or iPad's screen - CNET The developer
preview is out, and users are beginning to talk about features Apple didn't
announce during the keynote. One such feature is built-in screen recording.
It appears - as of right now - the feature is triggered through a button in
Control Center. There's a bit of work you'll need to do to set it up, but once
it's there, you can record your iOS device's display to show off your gaming
skills, or capture a random bug that keeps occurring.
Below you can check out the video Twitter user @Alexpettitt made detailing how
to enable and use the feature:
I had way too much fun recording this... but here's how to enable screen
recorder in iOS 11 and turn on / off mic too: pic.twitter.com/CAU0td9tG5
- Alex Pettitt (@Alexpettitt) June 7, 2017 Presumably, you can then edit and
share the screen recording just as can any other video stored on your iOS
device. This is surely going to come in handy for many users.
Since we are seeing the feature in an early beta, Apple can change how the
feature looks and works. We will be sure to update this post with any changes
up until iOS 11 is released to the public later this fall.
Apple confirmed to CNET this is indeed a feature of iOS 11.
