Turned out, restarting the computer cleared things right up. I'm always telling
people to do that, and here I am, not doing it. :D Thanks for the suggestions

Re: ReadKit RSS app not clearing all read items?

2015-04-28 Thread gs
Well, this won't be of much help to you and I apologize for that.

I had some sort of problem when I had ReadKit set to view all articles and
tried to mark all read. It seemed that with articles set to view all and when
trying to mark as read, something didn't go quite right. I admit I did not pay
enough attention at the time to know if the problem I experienced is similar to
yours. I'll pay closer attention next time.

Also, it helps to do a refresh (Command R) before exiting ReadKit if you know
you may next use Lire to view articles. I don't know if there is some setting
in ReadKit to trigger a refresh on exit. If so, I don't have it set and wish I
did. I have been taking the lazy way out and refreshing before exit.

Re: ReadKit Question

2013-12-18 Thread Nicholas Parsons
The app works perfectly for me, but I use FeedWrangler to sync my feeds, not
Instapaper. So I can't help you, unfortunately. However, it doesn't sound like
it's a VoiceOver problem, but rather a ReadKit and Instapaper problem. Given
this, the mainstream support documentation should be able to fix your problem.
Check your settings and preferences in ReadKit, check their help/support
documentation, and if that doesn't fix your problem try emailing the developers
with your issue.
Cheers,
Nic

Yeah, it's a bit odd and annoying. I think some of the syncing services allow
you to add subscriptions through an RSS client, but FeedWrangler which I use
doesn't allow it yet.

Thanks for the response. It is odd that there is an option to add a
subscription, but it is unavailable. I am really hoping that Lire adds syncing
support; I sent them an email today asking about it, so hopefully something
will happen soon.

Re: ReadKit rss reader and adding feeds

2013-12-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi,
I replied to Alex's post on the same topic so I won't fully repeat myself here.
For full info, see that thread. However, basically you need to either use a
syncing service such as FeedWrangler or FeedBin to manage your feeds and then
sync that with ReadKit (which is the preferred solution), or find an RSS feed
in Safari and click on the link. ReadKit should pop up automatically and ask if
you want to add the feed, unless you have another RSS Client set to be the
default RSS client.
Cheers,
Nic

Re: Readkit question (was Looking for Mac RSS reader)

2013-12-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
There's two ways to add feed subscriptions.
The first way is to add them through a syncing service like FeedWrangler or
FeedBin, and sync these with ReadKit. This is the best way as it allows you to
sync your feeds with your iOS device.
The second way is to just click on an RSS link in your web browser of choice. I
know at least with Safari when I do this ReadKit automatically pops up and asks
if I want to subscribe to the feed.

I also recommend taking your time to explore the preferences. There are some
great customisable settings in there, including the options to easily add short
cut keys.

Some short cuts which are worth knowing are G, to view the article in full text
readability mode, and shift-A, to mark all as read.

For iOS, I highly recommend Mr Reader for iPad. It can sync with ReadKit
through services like FeedWrangler. I haven't found anything great for iPhone.
FeedWrangler for iPHone is accessible and useable, but not particularly
enjoyable to use.

Best,
Nic

Re: ReadKit

2013-07-10 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I just wanted to share this from the developer in working with Favorited
articles and shortcuts for sharing. He got back to me very quickly and is
interested in hearing any feedback and suggestions for future releases. You can
contact him through the REad Kit Help menu and website.

you can create a custom smart folder for this purpose with File menu “Add smart
folder...”. You should set the “Favorited” rule to “YES”, then ReadKit will
list all of your starred items in the smart folder. Of course, you can set
additional rules, for example to filter starred items just from a specific
account.

Unfortunately there is no keyboard shortcut for sharing services, yet. This is
already on my to-do list and I’ll improve the whole sharing functionality soon.

automatically import them from ReadKit – you'll have to export them from
ReadKit or Google Reader and import them into Feed Wrangler through their web

Re: ReadKit

2013-07-09 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Brian, last I checked, the Readability app for iOS is not accessible. If
that's changed I'd be pleased to hear that.

Reader in Safari on Mac and iOS is fantastic, but there are scenarios where
it's not going to deliver. For example, when using a Twitter client on iOS or
Mac, you can't add an article to Apple's reading list from those apps. I
presume this is because the API doesn't exist to do it. So while I like Reader
for things I want to read right away, if I want to just mark an article for
reading later, say when I'm on a plane with no coverage, Instapaper rules.

another scenario is if you use any device outside the Apple ecosphere. I do use
Windows and Android too and it's nice to have all my content in a form that's
platform agnostic. It's so good to have a bunch of tools in the toolbox, and to
know which is the best for any given task.

Re: ReadKit

Hey Jonathan, Thanks for the explanation of what works for you. Ah, now I get
why the test article I favorited in readability I can't seem to see in the IOS
app. I believe it is still not accessible. Readability does seem to work very
well in REad Kit, so I guess I will just have to decide if I need Instapaper
once I get Feed Wrangler, been doing this transformation out of Newsrack in
steps, and trying to get familiar with all of REad Kit before getting it to
sync through Feed Wrangler. Always something new to learn. Thanks for all of
your input.

NO, I've never used Instapaper or Pinboard. I've never seen the need. I use
Apple's built-in Reader which is a part of Mac OS and iOS. Reader is fantastic.
You can press Command-Shift-R on just about any article in Safari and have it
appear without all the extraneous rubbish. YOu can also press command-shift-d
to add it to your reading list, or right click on any URL and select add to
reading list from the services sub-menu. Once something's in your reading list
you can access it from any of your devices. It's really handy in my opinion but
way under used by so many people.

Thanks Nicholas, for some reason I thought you needed a plug in for readability
as you do for safari and I saw something on readability's site about external
readers. Will have to play around with it more today. Do you also use
Instapaper and/or Pinboard. I am assuming that Readability, Pinboard, and
Instapaper are all basically the same thing, you just have to choose the one
you like the best. I never used any of these services with Newsrack, Night Owl,
Tweet List, or Twitterrific. So just trying to pick the one that works the best
with VO, since they all seem to work with everything.

Re: ReadKit

2013-07-09 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Brian,

Glad you worked it out.

Well, first of all, some of the feeds I subscribe to just display the full text
of articles by default. Others provide only an intro, and invite you to read
the rest in Safari. So what I do depends on which kind of article I'm reading.

More or less, though, what I do is this. When on an article title I'm
interested in:
• If that article is a full text article, I just navigate twice
to the right, interact with the HTML area and read.
• If that's not normally a full text article, I press the letter
G. This switches to Readability mode. And no, no plug in is needed. I then
navigate twice to the right, interact with the HTML area and read.
• If you want to open it in your browser anyway, just press the
letter b for bravo. Then navigate to your default browser and read.

For full text articles this only involves one more key press for me than
NewsRack. For non-full text articles this actually saves me a few key presses
as ReadKit has those short cuts for Readability mode and opening in your
browser.

Re: ReadKit

Hey Nick,

Yeah, maybe I need to start drinking tea. Sorry lack of sleep, and I do get
annoyed to quickly when I can't figure something out. I think the unlabeled
buttons threw me also at first, but I did figure a way around it eventually.
Like anything, I need to get used to it. Did you have to install the plug in
for readability to work with it?

In Newsrack, I used to have it set up to just click VO space bar, and the
article would open in safari. I guess I am looking for the minimal amount of
steps to get to an article I want to read. I have played around with both open
in browser, and opening in the Read Kit html area also. both seem to have extra
steps than Newsrack did. What have you found as easiest. Thanks for all the
advice. Brian

Alex,
I couldn't find an option for when text changes. There's text attributes, which
is already set to nothing. There's also status changes which is just set to
play tone. I'm sure you've correctly diagnosed the problem though.

Brian,
As I said, ReadKit optionally syncs with a whole range of services. Feed
Wrangler is just one. You need to sign up with one of those services, but not
all. Some might be free, I don't know. I've only used Feed Wrangler. What you
need to do is as follows:
• Navigate around with VoiceOver until you find a bunch of
unlabelled buttons.
• Use VO-SHIFT-H to read the help tag on each of these buttons.
• When you get to the button the help tag for which is Feed
Wrangler, you can VO-Space on it.
• Enter your Feed Wrangler account details.
• Navigate to the far left and VO-Space on the import button,
which will no longer be dimmed once you've entered your account details.
• Have a cup of tea and relax. :)

Re: ReadKit

2013-07-08 Thread Brian Fischler
Ugh, my whole point of not jumping right into Read Kit was having to keep
shelling out money for things. So I finally bought it and the very first thing
that comes up when launching REad Kit is you must have a premium account to
Insta paper. What the heck. I don't use Insta paper, and don't recall there
being a single mention of having to also purchase a premium account to
Instapaper on the app page and I don't believe anyone mentioned this on the
board. Yeah, I know Read kit was only 5 bucks, but having to keep purchase one
thing on top of the other is getting really annoying, especially if I am going
to shell out another 20 bucks for Feed Wrangler. Is there a way around this?
Thanks. I tried canceling, but importing seems to be dimmed. Thanks

I don't use the app, and I don't know about your second question. Your pirst,
though, sounds like a VO annoyance. From what you described, I'll bet the app
highlights or otherwise changes the title once you arrow to it. When that
happens, vo will read the new text, interrupting itself to do so if it must.
See if there's anything in settings about highlighting articles, and/or change
VO's action when text changes to "nothing". You can find that by hitting vo-v1
then left or right arrow. Once you find the option, up and down arrow th change
it, then enter to close the dialog.
