Re: Some more Questions
While I haven't installed Linux under VMWare, I would think that would be easier than doing it via bootcamp. A lot of the setup for linux seems to revolve around partitioning and bootup setup, usually assuming that Linux is the only thing running on the box. While it's possible to set things up just right to make a multi-boot machine, a virtual machine gives the appearance that it's a dedicated piece of hardware, so no accidentally mangling the wrong partition and such. You also have the advantage that you can access online docs and such on the mac side and then just flip to vmware to try stuff rather than going all-in with a boot cycle into Linux. Plus you can use vmware's snapshots to keep a working instance to fall back in case the experiment fails. Worst case is you just take the virtual machine file and put it in the trash. To add to the fun, you can even find pre-installed unix virtual machines which you can just download and use. CB On 1/28/15 2:28 PM, Anders Holmberg wrote: Hi! Search google for this. some more questions
I have a really major question of sorts, well 2. How do i uninstall apps from the mac store that i do not want? I’m not seeing uninstall buttons from it anywhere that i can find. Also i’ve got apps that have downloaded to my downloads folder. I’m assuming i need to actually move them to the applications folder, but how do i accomplish this? BTW I seem to be getting along nicely with my mac. I’ve found a couple insanely useful apps some of which i found on applevis .:) I’ve found macjournal useful the most though. I’ve got a few things I need to track journal wise and i like the fact that i can just create multiple journals as needed. The app was expensive but worth the price. I also found an app called my medical. it’s fully accessible as far as i can tell. If someone wants to check it out and report it’s accessibility on apples they should do so. I don’t have an account to report it/fill out info on it and no time till after new years. The hi lights of my medical is that i’m on over 15 different medications, i’m in the hospital at least once every couple months and i go by ambulance. Once i’m done entering all of the data i should just be able to hand my macbook to the proper people so they can pull the info out of the app. We’ll see just how useful it is in time. My final question is this. I’m looking for good and free bible study apps so if anyone has ideas out there i’d appreciate it -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: some more questions
1. To uninstall an app you generally just have to delete it from our application folder. There are utilities like clean my Mac or App Delete which offer a more system wide delete service if you require but in general deleting most apps will be fine. 2. Similarly to install a downloaded app simply copy the app file into the application folder. Often these apps will appear in a dmg file which you need to open to access the app file. The exception to the above is those app which tend to be ported across from Windows which have names like Flash install.app. Any app name with install in its name will need to be run like a Windows style program. These tend also to be best deleted with a utility like app delete or clean my mac. Some more questions about Windows 7 on the Mac
I've had Windows xp running in vmware fusion on my macbook pro. Now i have just purchased Windows 7 and it will be here on Friday. I did follow the earlier bootcamp thread but I have some additional questions. 1. Can i install Windows 7 with vmware fusion to initially play with it and then reactivate it after I install it using bootcamp as long as I'm not going to try to use the same key both with vmware and its separate partition once I have it installed separately? 2. Somebody mentioned importing an installation from vmware to the bootcamp installation. is this possible and does it require less sighted help? Are there other caveats of which I should be aware if I decide to do that? 3. If i want to use my multi-link bluetoot keyboard with Windows in the bootcamp partition, can I do this? I realize this will be a full-fledged Windows installation but I wondered if the drivers involved include bluetooth support. 4. When I go to install Window-eyes in the bootcamp Windows partition and windoweyes says it has to reboot to start the install, will it automatically restart in Windows or will I have to use the option key to make sure it does so if I have Macos as the default? Maybe I should just make Windows the default while i'm doing the windoweyes install just to keep things less complicated? I won't need to hurry to install windoweyes as I also have System Access. Thanks. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Re: some more questions about streams and macs
Olivia: Bottom line concerning the Stream and the Mac... You will be able to do everything with the Stream, except authorize it for Audible. Audible works very very nicely on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. I believe you have two of these. The NLS player is really worth getting though. I works great with the Mac. I downloaded 20 books and put them on it yesterday. The Stream really is a nice device and if you can get a discount through GDB, you should go or it. I believe you will enjoy it. Maybe you can get a friend to help you authorize it for Audible, on a windows machine if that is a deal breaker for you. On Jun 16, 2010, at 1:24 AM, Olivia Norman wrote: Thanks for the info! RE: some more questions about streams and macs
I have both an IPod touch and a victor stream, and I use both. I find the stream great at night because of it's sleep timer. I can set it and it turns off if I've fallen asleep. My Ipod doesn't or at least I haven't found the function to allow it to auto switch off. The only problem I really have with the victor stream, is that it at least mine which is about a year old, is limited to 16gig sd card storage. So my Ipod has more storage capacity. But the stream plays more book formats than the Ipod. Each has it's good and bad points. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Olivia Norman Sent: Tuesday, 15 June 2010 1:57 a.m. To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: some more questions about streams and macs Wonderful! Re: some more questions about streams and macs
Right, but, most people who live in the US are eligible for the free NLS player which does the job nicely. the only down side to that free player is that it's quite large. This was done intentionally to facilitate people who have various physical disabilities as well as those who are elderly and not used to small devices. However, the speaker on the NLS player as well as the battery life are wonderful. if I would have had this player when I bought my stream, I wouldn't have bothered. Now, that its not fully compatible with the MAc, I don't think I would even recommend it. there are much better ways of playing audio than a victor stream. Re: some more questions about streams and macs
Hi Olivia, I think I can help you. I say think very lightly. I used to be a Stream user who used Windows, and obviously now have switched to the Mac. Okay let me see if I remember the first question, to format the SD card, you do it on the Stream directly. This is accomplished by pressing the 7 key on the numpad a few times till you hear format SD card. It will ask you to confirm by pressing the pound key. Once you press it, it will say formatting SD card and report back when the format is complete. Once that is done, you will have folders like VR audible, VR music etc. Yes, you can place talking books on the same card as music. You just place the talking books in to the VR DTB folder. I'm switching from the stream to the Ipod on my Iphone, I think the largest card the Stream can handle is a 16GB but I could be wrong. It is much faster if you were to get a Stream to copy content via the card reader than the Stream's USB port itself. The Stream shows up on the desktop once you insert the SD card in to a card reader. You just hit command O to open like normal and all the folders are there. I hope this has helped you. The only thing I'm unsure about is the Audible authorization. That might have to be done on a Windows machine, since the Audible version on the Mac assumes you are using Itunes on an Ipod. Well, I hope I have helped. Have a wonderful day. Thank you for your help on the Iphone, it is much appreciated. RE: some more questions about streams and macs
I As a stream user I would say this. Remember you will also have to pay for a storage card. That being the case, if I didn't have one I would regard any Apple device with 16 GB, or even better 32 or the incredible 64 GB of storage as a better bet. Synchronising will be much easier and I can't think of anything the stream can do that Apples can't provided you have a Daisy player app. The media player control knocks spots of anything in any gadget apart from the Stream, and in some ways is much better. RE: some more questions about streams and macs
If I didn't have a stream now, and I liked the way the apple products work, which I hope I will when I get my hands on them in a few weeks, I would say a 64 GB iPhone 4G would meet so many needs that a Stream would not be worth the money. Given that I bought one a couple of years ago when VO wasn't quite as well established and the Apple products not as good, it was one of the best purchases I ever made. I'd like to be able to spell filenames and things like that on it which you can't, and I wish it had internet access etc. Things have changed a lot in two years! -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Olivia Norman Sent: Monday, June 14, 2010 2:56 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: some more questions about streams and macs This is very helpful. You can't play library of congress talking books on an Ipod. so if you read a lot of those books and magazines, you'd need some sort of something to play them on, such as the stream, right? Re: some more questions about streams and macs
Olivia, I have the Stream and the Book Sense. I like the Book Sense better. It's smaller, can record in more formats right out of the box, plays NLS, Audible, RFBD, all sorts of text files. It's about 1/3 the size of the Stream. The XT model even has an FM radio and blue tooth connectivity, of which the Stream has neither. Only drawback to this is it's somewhere between $400 and $500 instead of $329 or so. It works with the Mac very well for transferring files. The XT model even came with an 8 gig card and 4 gigs of internal storage, which is very handy. I hope this helps instead of confusing you further. I do believe you would still have to authorize it on Audible with a windows PC, but I'm not 100% sure of this one. On Jun 14, 2010, at 9:55 AM, Olivia Norman wrote: This is very helpful. Re: some more questions about streams and macs
Hi, I'm going to play devils advoket here. The advantage of the removable storage is this. 1. If the card dies, you throw it away and buy another one. Before I get emails saying cards are not likely to die, I just had a 2gb die on me. (smile) 2. If all you can afforde is 8gb, buy an 8gb SD card and when money allows buy a 16 or 32 gb sd card. you still have access to your 8GB card.
