2009-09-04 Thread Dane Trethowan

You expect me to summaries the features of Pages in one email message?
We'll be here all night , what I've discovered so far is some
very excellent auto-correct features, we've discussed the "Auto
Numbering and Auto-bulleting" functionality of Pages but that's just
the start, just play about with the menu system and you'll soon see
what I mean, look in the help file which can be accessed with command-
shift-? and download the manual.

Re: Word processing on Mac OS X

2009-09-04 Thread Dane Trethowan

I look forward to trying it , bought that excellent little
package nearly 3 years ago and haven't looked back, I really should
give the software a "run" and see if its been updated and improved
since I last used it, one of the features I liked in that software was
the ability to write HTML coding, see the document as it would appear
and view the actual coding.

Cool. What kinds of features does it offer? I just started using it so I'm
not that familiar with it.
Thanks,

Hi Dane,

I've used Nisus Pro for a long time and I msut say that the developers are
very open to accessibility issues. I wonder how well the new 1.3.1 of Pro
will work under Snow Leopard when it comes out of beta.

Thanks for the suggestions

I use a combination of Open office and Pages - the latter is very nice
indeed I'm told under Snow Leopard though I haven't had the chance to
try that for myself yet -.

Another word processing package -available on its own - which is super!
to use is Nisus Writer Pro, very accessible and packed with all sorts of
Word Processing and desktop publishing features.

If you want to go down the "Free Road" try Bean which does one hell of a
lot considering its free.

don't need it right at the moemnt, I would like the ability to use footnotes
and endnotes as well as tables of contents. Latex is great for academic
writing nbut sometimes when there's an error and the file will not compile
it can be very frustrating.

I know that Nisus is in beta at the moment for use with SL.Hopefully, they
have improved the accesibility and compatibility between Nisus and VO.

I would be very greatful for any recommendations. I do not need an Office
suite, but how accessible is the IWork suite. Unfortunately, I did not like
OpenOffice and found it very clunky and not very intuitive.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Take care

james

Yes I have tried a deom version. I liked it. I just wonder if it is possible
to buy each application separately. Although Keynote sounds very cool.

Oh I'm sorry, my mistake I misunderstood your message. Actually, there is a

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread James & Nash

Hi Barry,

Could you E Mail me offf list and tell me what I have to do? Do I need to
install something other than TEXShop or is the Latex already built in to Mac
OS X?

Also, I E Mailed Apple Accessibility about that problem and someone very
kindly explained what ligatures were although i can't remember. I think
the work around for this problem is to put braces around the faulty
ligatures.
Thanks

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread Barry Hadder

You don't have to use TEXShop. You can just run the tools from the
command line.

I should also mention that I have noticed some ligatures not showing
up correctly in pdf files generated with pdflatex or dvipdf.
lowercase fi is one that comes to mind. I haven't a clue as to why
this is so if anybody knows I would appreciate the info.

Perhaps we should take this of list although it is VO related as it works
with VO.

There are some conversion tools. If you do a Google search you should find
them.

Take care

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread James & Nash

I have used Latex for about two years and yes i agree it is. Just as an
aside under Mc OS X do I need to use TEXShop as it is from what I remember
a 700MB program with all the packages etc. Could I not just use the command
line as I do under Windows once I've installed TEX Live or something?

Thanks

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread Koumanova Rostislava

hi,
i use bold, underline in text edit.
for eg. i write my document and then i spell check and format by
selecting and performing bold , underline ecc.
i handle a lot of tables using open office.
it does not read heading of the colum or row and i have a little tip
for this.
if i have to fill the table i copy and paste the deading in the entire
colom , then i overwrite it.
when i comlete the table i paste it in text edit or document of open
office.
for bullets one can use iwork or open office.
i know it is not perfect but there is alway a way to do the things.

If you use LaTeX you are doing quite well. LaTeX is far nicer under

Although i use Latex for writing, it is always grat to use a word processor

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread Simon Cavendish

Dear Rostislava,

The major problems I have encountered trying to use Nisus Writer Pro
is a lack of certainty in formatting. I would not know for instance
when I was inserting bullets or other features. When toggling
attributes like bold or udnerline, i do not know whether i toggle them
on or off. It's difficult remember every time to do it. And of course,
there is a problem with tables. I don't know when I am in the table
and which row or column I am in.

If you have had more success, and if you are, lie me, a completely,
blind person, I would be interested in your experiences.

I also have documents for which I would have to create headers or
footers. AGain, it is an uncertainty of whre I am: main body text or
header or footer, and having feedback about formatting.

With best wishes

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread Barry Hadder

I recommend OpenOffice.

With Writer you have access to bullets and tables. With those two
things, you can make a pretty decent technical document.

Just a note about the tables:
You might not think that you can do anything with Them at first, but
it does work. However, Text presented in a table on a help page is
unreadable by VO. I've been in tuch with the developers about this.

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread Koumanova Rostislava

hi,
i use text edit allways , pages and open office.

text edit is not a simple note editor and is very potential, eg.
saves tables, links ecc
iwork is as great as word ... and it is useful to open doc from
moffice and insert formatting such as header or foot nottes. i love
it's comment capacity, something which i never used with jaws.
i don't have i works and i save with open office. it is great for
handling different formats such as pdf or word.
you can copy some files and paste in open office , it gives you only
text.
i hope this makes sense for you.

Re: Word Processing on Mac OS X

2009-07-07 Thread Simon Cavendish

Dear James,

I have been following various posts on this list but to date I haven't
heard anything reassuring about Pages or Iworks that would persuade me
that I could ditch Ms Office under Windows. However, I know that some
people have used Pages and other applications with a degree of
success. I've looked at the help files in Pages but I found them so
unhelpful that I gave up.

I seem to remember that you had some contacts with Nisus Pro. ARe you
still able to talk to them about accessbility of their application? If
they took our need on board, I feel they would be a great rival to Ms
Office on the Mac.

I am sorry not to be more helpful.

With best and warmest wishes

Simon

HI,
James:

Pages and Open Office 3.x are accessible, though neither has tables
support yet. I have heard that the other one you mentioned is
accessible too.

Regards,
Alex,

Hi folks,

Does anyone use Pages or Nisus Writer Pro on Mac OS X or indeed any other
Mac word processor please? If so, what is the acce3ssibility of each with
VO?

Thanks

James
