Re: Bulk Import of MID\MIF files

2000-07-13 Thread Flavio Hendry

Hi Andre

May do it like this - the quick and dirty way ... :

- create a "dummy" workspace (file / save workspace)
- open the mapbasic window
- import a file
- copy the command from the mapbasic window into the workspace file
- copy it on for all files you want to import (cahnging the fileneams)
- open the workspace ... that will import all files ...

Hello all,
after some time away I am now back on the list. I have quickly looked at
the digest for the group knowledge on managing metadata for MI tables.
I would like to have a simple tool for putting simple metadata into our
tables.
Is their a consensus on which way to go? I want to keep track of origins,
revisions amendments etc. and would prefer to do it while in MI sessions.
Can anyone provide advice on tools for the job?

MI: Managing Metadata

2000-07-13 Thread Mark Chladil

Hello all again,
RTFM was my answer.
I missed the information that v6 of MI allowed Table Manager to add and edit
metadata and so, I had not installed my copy of v6 as I was finishing a
couple of big-ish jobs.
Hopefully the limited functionality will get us going and perhaps whet our
appetite for a proper metadata manager.
Thanks to those who replied.

MI alter obj symbol in loop

2000-07-13 Thread John Chioles

Hello:

I am trying to alter a symbol style in a for loop.

Here's the relevant MB:

dim NewSymbol as symbol
dim objSelection as object
set table newTab fastedit on
for i = 1 to TableInfo(newTab, TAB_INFO_NROWS)
select * from newTab into selSingleRec where RowId = i
'
'multiple criteria to set the symbol style parameters
'
NewSymbol =
MakeFontSymbol(nShape,nColor,14,"MapInfoSymbols",nFontStyle,0)
set style symbol NewSymbol
NewSymbol = CurrentSymbol()
objSelection = selSingleRec.obj
alter object objSelection Info OBJ_INFO_SYMBOL, NewSymbol
update selSingleRec set obj = objSelection where rowid = i
commit table newTab
next

I drummed up some old messsages to the list, to use as examples but couldn't
get them to work.
Any help is appreciated.

MIF file projection puzzle

2000-07-13 Thread APPLETON Dale

Hello all

I've been working on exporting a grid file to a GPS using GarFile V1.0. The
process is roughly thus:

Create grid file in Lat/Long WGS 84 and export as a Mif/Mid file.
Open GarFile and export Mif file to the GPS.

Now the problem:

I can succesfully import a tracklog from the GPS as either points or
polylines, and display the resultant data as a table. The data projects
projects correclty.

Exporting a grid file resulted in Garfile returning an incorrect projection
error when I attempted to load the Grid.mif file.

I then compared the two MIF files using a text editor. (Track.mif = file
imported from GPS, Grid.mif = file that failed to export) The headers
displayed as follows;

Track.mif
Version 300
Charset "WindowsLatin1"
Delimiter ","
CoordSys Earth Projection 1, 104

Grid.mif
Version 300
Charset "WindowsLatin1"
Delimiter ","
CoordSys Earth Projection 1, 0

I then changed the Earth Projection value in the failed file to "104", saved
it, and bingo, it worked.

I'd like to avoid having to edit .mif files in the future, and would like to
know just how to export a table with a projection of "104"

Thanks
Dale

Hi Reuben.

Get MapXtreme or if budget is restricted, get MapXsite.

Not exactly; programmers should not use *uncontrolled* globals.
Even everyone's favorite whipping boy, the lowly-regarded Goto,
has it's place (but 99% of the time that place is the
wastebasket.) Module scope globals are almost required for any
MapBasic dialog beyond the trivial. For those, I just create a
separate module for the dialog, and then use 'dim' to define
globals I need. That way there's little chance that a global
there can foul some other part of the application.

Defining variables as 'global' instead of 'dim' at the module
level is what I'd call uncontrolled, and should only be done if
you want to live in interesting times. Besides, anyone who
programs in MapBasic already has to compromise his or her sense
of purity to a certain extent. In a language where there are no
function-level static variables and NO private functions
anywhere, you can only be so holy about it. Especially when it
comes to dealing with MapBasic dialog structures.

Your global array is easily a module-scoped variable, and the use
you make of it is clever, obvious and totally appropriate. I
wouldn't put down the use of globals here.

Well, can't help you with column headings, but you can get rid of these pesky grid
lines in browser by selecting your browser window and in toolbar under
"Browse>Options" unchecking grid lines. You may pick a prettier typface/size by
keeping your browser window selected, and using toolbar Options>Text Style. Hope that
helps.

Although it is probably not everything you are looking for, you can
customize the title of columns in a browse window and turn the grid
lines on and off. I use these statements in the MapBasic window:

Browse State_name "State Name", State "State Abbreviation" from States
Set Browse Grid Off

RE: MI - MapBasic lists

2000-07-13 Thread Crompton, Mark

Hi Tom,

One of the ways I do it, is through Global variables (I know programmers
should not use Globals). With a global array you can resize it inside on of
the handler routines. This may not work as written, as I re-hashed some of
my current code to make it easier to read, but the basic concept is the
same.

This is what I do for a ListBox:

1) Make a selection, put it into a temporary table, pull out the required
column into a Global Array (gaszPickSiteName)

Select SiteName from DCCMatches where SiteName > "" Group by
SiteName Order by SiteName into TT
ReDim gaszPickSiteName(TableInfo(TT, TAB_INFO_NROWS))
For snLoop = 1 to TableInfo(TT, TAB_INFO_NROWS)
Fetch Rec snLoop From TT
gaszPickSiteName(snLoop) = Str$(TT.SiteName)
Next

2) ListBox Control
Control ListBox
Width 50 Height 70
Position 5, 35
ID PICKSECTORLISTBOX
Calling UpdateSectorListBox

3) Handler Routine

Sub UpdateListBox()
Dim snReadSelValue, snLoop, snCounter As SmallInt
Dim szSiteName As String

' *** Only 1 item at once, sorry
' *** (returns 0 if no items selected).
' *** Value returned is the same as ROWn from TT
snReadSelValue = ReadControlValue(PICKSECTORLISTBOX)

snCounter = 0
If (snReadSelValue > 0) Then
Fetch Rec snReadSelValue from TT
szSiteName = TT.SiteName

For snLoop = 1 to TableInfo(TT, TAB_INFO_NROWS)
Fetch Rec snLoop From TT

Subject: MI - MapBasic lists

Mappers,

I'm having a problem with MapBasic. Is it possible to create a drop-down
list within a dialog box of files currently open. From what I gather,
drop-down boxes (popupmenu) seem to be pretty static, and I can't seem to
find a way of making it list files 'on the fly'. If anyone could help me
with the code on this I'd be very appreciative. On a similar line, how can I
list what columns a file has?

Many thanks in advance,

Tom

MI Simple Browser in Layout Style Question?!

2000-07-13 Thread PPR Jon Bloor

Dear All,

I am sure that this is a very basic question, but here goes, apologies
if it is too basic.
This query is for MapInfo Ver 5.0!

Often I am required to place a Brower Table in my Layout, but
cartographically speaking they're a bit poor (some would even say
pants..). My audiences often require more than a one word column
heading, the result is wherever there are spaces, MI inserts an
underscore. This is not very elegant. and neither are the style of
grid lines for the browsers in the first place!

So is there a more presentable method for showing Brower tables in
Layout?? Do I need to buy some 3rd party software eg. MapPublisher
or Illustrator or Freehand etc etc.

Answer on a e-card or mail

Thanks again

Will sum.

Jon Bloor.

Hi Anish!

If you turn on the ruler tool and then use a line or polyline tool the
ruler window will show the distances as you draw.

Or did you want more than that?
A way to key in exact measures would be nice but that can be made
afterwards by double clicking the object.

MI Overlapping Point Symbols - Cartographic Question

2000-07-13 Thread Gary Schwartz

Hi all.

I have a cartographic problem that I'd like to share with the list and
see what kind of ideas you might have to share. We are creating a
series of maps showing point locations. In many cases there are
multiple points at the same location, and we would like to use some sort
of symbology to demonstrate this. The points represent different types
of things, and using the dispersal method isn't really appropriate for
this situation. We've tried using pie wedges to try to show this, but
that doesn't look very good. Anybody have any other good ideas? I'll
happily summarize any responses back to the list.

Thanks,
Gary.

Re: MI: Distance & Ruler

2000-07-13 Thread Gary Schwartz

Kumar,

I believe that this already exists. If you use the ruler tool to open the
ruler window and then switch to the polyline tool to draw your line (keeping
the ruler window open) the distance covered should be displayed in the ruler
window.

Hope I haven't misunderstood what you were asking.

Gary.

Hello List-

Has anyone seen a tool that will take x, y coordinates in a table and find
the closest StreetPro street intersection? For example, if a record had
-81.93, 28.21 as coordinates it would output 5th Avenue and Main Street,
Somewhere, FL. As always your help is much appreciated.

You may want to know that what you describe has already been done: twice.
First by Kiev Software Factory, along with many other features, in their
Enhanced Drawing Tools. Second by MapInfo Corp. in MapInfo Professional
version 5.5. If the ruler tool dialog is visible, then the distance is
display when using any of the drawing tools: total and subtotal for
polylines and polygons.

MI How to reference files on D.M. Tools site

2000-07-13 Thread Bill Thoen

Here's a suggestion when pointing out software on the Directions
Magazine Tools site. First, find the link to the tool in the
usual way, and then right-click on the file link. One of the
options you'll see on the popup menu is "Copy Link location."
Click on this to copy the "download" URL to your clipboard. Then
in your message dump out the whole mess like so:
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/default.asp?a=download&filename=GridWinE.zip&id=266

If people click on this, they download the file. However, if you
just want to point to the description page, replace the
"a=download&filename=GridWinE.zip" with "a=file." Now the URL is
a more reasonable
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/default.asp?a=file&id=266. Try
it out, and next time you want to point out a file to someone,
this is a neat way to do it. Note also that if you are
maintaining your own index of files, now you know how to link to
both the actual file or its description.

I've had this same problem on a simple point file. The only way I've managed to get

MI Switch line direction

2000-07-13 Thread feinholz, lois

Hi -
I have a layer that contains lines and polylines that represent "blockface
postal codes". These follow the contours of the streets they are related
to, but are offset to one side or another. I want to find an easy way to
show the line of travel of a letter carrier who has to deliver to those
postal codes.
When I use the Layer Control, Display, Show Line Direction, the symbology is
good. I wanted to know if there is a way to select one or more of the
polylines and reverse the line direction on them (i.e. to get the arrow in
the line or polyline to point in the opposite direction).
If not, is there another way to get that symbology on the polylines so that
I could flip it? I looked at the available line styles, and couldn't find
one that looks like the one used in Show Line Direction.
Thanks
Lois

Re: MI Adding summary information to .tab files.

2000-07-13 Thread Andrew . MacDougall

A quick solution could be to run the Table Manager mbx. It allows you to tag a table
with some metadata, though not in user defined fields...

I would like to add a documentation feature to my .tab files that would allow users
who are interested to see:

?Who created a file;
?When it was created (and modified);
?etc.

Kind of like the summary properties in a Word document.

What is the best way to do this in MapInfo?

thanks,

Hi all

I just wonder, if they did a jump from 3 to 8, why not do the right jump and call it
"2000". According to Bill Huber the news are as follows:

"The first is that ArcView will change dramatically. The second is that it will not
change at all. "

Read on: http://www.directionsmag.com/article.asp?ArticleID=72

>where does this leave Mapinfo/MapBasic ???

My reading is that everything that was written in Avenue (and AML, and it is a lot)
can be "toiletted" - except you want to keep going with the old ugly stuff forever ...
But there are still people using PC Arc/Info out there, and ESRI, last November in
Munich, announced even a new version of PC Arc/Info ... (DOS screen in light grey
instead of black ???). So, why not go for that ... But I'd really like a green DOS
window, however, as far as I know, Fortran does not support green ...
