MI-L US univ and colleges
Does anyone have any ideas where I might find a coverage of U.S.university/colleges with Lat/Longs? I have web surfed all of my favorite haunts and only found a coverage for NY state. RE: MI Help in creating points!
Jackie, You might check to make sure that the longitude is the Centroid X, and latitude is Cenroid Y. Reversing them creates havoc in the coverage! Short of that, double checking the format of the lat longs would be my next step. MI geocoding question
I seem to recall having a way to do this from last year, but for the life of me, am not getting this time. I have students' addresses I am geocoding and am down to the manual geocodes. I have several students that are on the same street, same block, and/or same address and would like to select them all at once and place a point for all of them. When I select them all and place the point, then check info tool, no student ID info. I have been doing them one at a time, but I can almost remember doing them in "batch" last year. As my husband would say, "tsk, tsk, senility, and at such a young age, too"! Thanks in advance for the help. RE: FW: MI Distance Query
Archana, This was sent to me a few months ago by Sheila Quan for essentially the same thing you are asking to do. You may have to play with the sql a little (like the columns you want to show in your query, etc), but this works great. Good luck Fran Peck Peoria Unified School District 6330 W Thunderbird Rd Glendale, AZ 85306 Voice: 623-486-6099 Fax: 623-486-6111 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is not really difficult, just long: Dear Fran If you want crow-fly distance, first create your distance column under table maintenance table structure. Then update column with "Distance", "CartesianDistance" (for curved surfaces) or "SphericalDistance" (for straight surfaces) so your function should look something like this: Distance(student address coordinate eg Lat, Long, school coordinate eg Lat, Long, "distance measure") ie Distance(lat, long, lat, long, "km") That will work cos I have done in countless times! RE: MI Antigen found =*.* file
Wade, I think this is probably an auto virus type response from the Exchange server at that particularly institution. With the "love bug" virus making the rounds, most of the institutions are doubling up virus protection and many are using auto responses when they find a virus. In this case, the auto response must be going out to the entire list. The list owner and the institution probably have no control over this auto response and best to just hit the delete key. MI imagery additional info
Thanks for the response, George and John. MI won't open the image in either raster or running georeg.mbx - I had already tried that. When I just try to open as a raster, I get "Raster engine unable to recognize image file format". When I try to open using georeg.mbx, I get "Specified file does not contain valid registration information." The vendor that distributed these yesterday at the meeting I attended said because they are 11 bit, in ArcView they would have to be viewed with ArcView Image Extension, but I don't know what I would need with MI. MI topology sum
Thanks to all who responded. Sum follows: 1) After you draw the first boundary, you can use the node snap ('S' key to turn on and off) to trace the common boundary line when drawing the next polygon. Hint: If you want to trace over a big piece of boundary (especially if it's complicated), click the first point with snap on, hold down CTRL and click further down the line. The points in between will be automatically traced. If you've already drawn the polys and you want to correct them, select the worst of the two adjoining polys, click the Node Edit button, and drag the nodes over the good poly so they overlap. Then select Objects>Set Target. Select the good poly and pick Objects>Erase. That will "cut" your bad poly to exactly match the good one. 2) Mapinfo has no topology program within it. I am aware that recently a topological add-on has been released by mapinfo. Its around $2000 AUD. I purchased a product called CartaLinx from the IDRISI mob @ Clark Uni for around $500 USD. I recall that they have a fully functional demo version on their www site. This demo may be enough to do your small job. I wouldn't advise buying it except if you plan using it for small jobs. When I loaded one of my datasets into it, it took "hours" to do a job that ESRIs Data Automation Kit (around $2000 AUD) took less than a minute to do. I ended up buying DAK as because cartalinx didn't work on larger datasets. Beware though, DAK is an old DOS program souped up to work in Windows. It lacks some of the windows functionality we've come to be used to, but if you're really only wanting to CLEAN & BUILD topology, its a real winner. 3) There are a number of ways that you can create polygons so that you do not have this problem. Method one is to have snap switched on if you are heads up digitising existing polygons. To set snap tolerance Options / Preferences / Map Window. This is a bit laborious if you have more than a few polygons to create. The next method is to copy the line nodes from the layer with the existing polygon boundaries on to your new layer. To do this, ensure the layer with the polygons or boundary lines to copy, is set to editable. Select a polygon or polyline, select reshape button, then use shift click or alt click to select the nodes you require. Hit Ctrl C (copy) then go to layer control make your new layer editable. Hit Ctrl V (paste). Continue to do this until you have created your new schools boundary based on the original table polygons. Method three; If you are creating your school boundaries from scratch you can create the first polygon then each additional is purposely created to overlap the first polygon. Then you use Objects / Set Target / Erase or Split. You will probably find that you will need to use a combination of all three of the above to achieve the result you want. Thanks to all. I am still working on it to figure out the "best" way to deal with the issue. topology in MI
I have a question for the gurus of MI. I have several school service area polygons, and, not surprisingly, when I drew them at one zoom level, the boundary lines matched. However, when I zoom in, I have spaces between the boundary lines, which when I drop student addresses on the map, can mean that some of my students do not select in a boundary select. Does MI have a topology cleaning feature someplace hidden that I have been unable to find - or a work around other than drawing my boundaries at 0.005 mi?! If when I redraw my boundaries for this year (because we have added new schools and rearranged some boundaries anyway), I draw them in the same table/coverage rather than separate tables and use the node snap feature, will the line between the two polygons "snap" together? Thanks in advance and will sum. MI thanks again all
Thanks again for the assistance. Popular consensus was to run a SQL Query to find the non geocode points. Then put the mapper (with streets table) and browser side by side. Add and make it editable the layer with the geocode points. Then, in the browser, select one row, making sure it stays selected. Then, place the point in the mapper. Repeat all records. That easy - I knew there had to be an easy way. Again, my thanks. MI geocode question
I have another question for the list - there has to be a way to do this! I have a table of geocoded points, but 2 points did not geocode (the intersection wasn't there in the street dataset). Now, what I want to do is this: I know I can manually place a point on the map and using the Info tool fill in the fields for those two points and delete the other two (now) duplicate records. However, it seems to me that there should be a way (and I do not have MapBasic) to assign those points to the already existing records or select not obj in a query and then make them objects. Two points are not a big deal, but if I have 100 or more student records with multiple fields, then it will get unwieldy. Thanks in advance. I have a list of student points that need to be repositioned and querying by the MI ID number would be great. Except when I open the MI table, the MI ID field is not displayed. MI sql reference recommendations

Is there reference material that gives a better explanation of SQL select in MI than the reference and user's guides that come with it? However, I have a question I hope someone can answer. These images are only displaying at 1 mile zoom and greater. If I even select a zoom of 2 miles, nothing, no image. These images were opened from .sid images using Mr. Sid, and are listed by the vendor as "1foot" images, and encompass a section (a Section 1 mile square of Township, Range ilk). There are also "10 foot" images that encompass a whole 36 section T,R, and I have registered one of those and do not have the same problem with the zoom. Unfortunately, resolution is not all that great at higher zoom on that one!I have looked at the archives and the manuals and do not see an explanation of this zoom thing anywhere. MI SQL question Obtaining counts
I have a question for the list. I have gone into the archives and users guide and have found one part of this question, but not the full solution. I have a table of students with a column of INOUTDIST, and in the column there is an "I" if they are varianced but from in district, and an "O" if they are varianced but they are from out of the district. I have joined this table to my school polygon service area table by school number to ultimately thematically map the information. My dilemma is this: I can get a count (frequency) of "I" and "O" and when I add schoolnum in there can get the number by school. BUT I am still missing something - the query returns with a TOTAL of "I"s and "O"s for each school. I can add in a where clause with either "I" or "O", but cannot figure out how to get my query to breakdown the number of each for each school. I know I could take this into Access and manipulate it, but would like to keep it in MI with all of my MI pertinent info if at all possible. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. MI geocoding question
Listers, I have been working up a streets table for our new subdivisions to use for geocoding new students to the area. I have the street name, from left, to left, from right, to right, etc as the other street tables I use for the same purpose. When I open the table along with the table of address to geocode, my "custom" table is not in the pull down menu of "Search Table". I have tried having it as the only streets table open, but still no. What am I missing? Thanks in advance. MI street data venting
Listers, I am about to jump on a soapbox here and vent at the commercial vendors who sell street centerline data for geocoding. I am in the process of drawing new street segments in our district and putting address ranges on them as a supplemental table for geocoding students. In the process of doing this, I thought I would be able to copy the address ranges from the comercial dataset. Wrong, over 61000 street segments in this commercial dataset (for which we paid specifically to use for geocoding)have no address ranges, zero, zip. We are not talking about just small obscure streets, there are major streets in this dataset that should have an address range - even if they just estimate it based upon its location on the map! And the commercial dataset is not editable! So I end up having to query out the street segments in which there are no address ranges, save the query as a table and then edit that. This has become a much larger process than adding a few hundred new streets to the district. And this isn't the only incidence of incorrect data, I have sent the incorrect streets and ranges to the vendor for correction. And I am starting to think that perhaps as we correct their data and let them know, we should get something for this! I realize that the commercial vendors are working a large area, and I also realize that my concerns are small to them, but data quality and integrity has to be important at some level? Am I expecting too much here? Is this an ongoing problem that we in the industry have decided not to push? I am going to advise my boss not to purchase commercial street centerline data or geocoding programs until we can be assured that we will get reliable data - not perfect data, but at least much more reliable data. What are others doing along these lines? I am really interested to know. MI another Label question
I have another label question for the list regarding labels in MI (my week for visually appealing and easily interpreted maps!). I have already checked the archives and downloads on this, but didn't find anything that looked like it would do what I need. I have a map with hundreds of points, many of which are clustered. Is there are way to get MI (or is there a MB program that I can run) to label the points with arrows to the points in automatically in such a way as to make the labels legible? I know I can manually do this, but to do this on hundreds or thousands of points would be unwieldy. Thanks in advance for the help. On my last label query based on the responses I received, I decided that given the enormous size of this dataset, it would be easier and the results would be better to just "muscle it" and manually label only those I want. Thanks again. MI Label problem
(I am resending this because it was bounced back from Administrator [EMAIL PROTECTED] so will apologize in advance if it duplicates) OK, I have a really infuriating one this morning! I have turned on the labels in my street centerline file and have selected duplicate text ok, but no overlapping text and no labelling partial segments. BUT it is labelling partials! Well, no problem, I will just select and delete the ones in the map window that I do not want. Right? Wrong! When I move the window slightly to center and it redraws, there they all are AGAIN! OK, so I will outsmart it - I will select and delete the labels I do not want, go straight to the layout window and print - there they are again. I have also deselected the duplicate text and select label partial segments and it doesn't give me all of the streets. Does anyone on the list have any suggestions short of turning of the labels and manually selecting each individual street? MI editing street tables
I have a couple of questions for the list - I have a street data table with address ranges, etc. And I have a bunch of new subdivisions with new roads coming into the area, and nobody (not county agencies, commercial vendors, etc are keeping up with the new streets!). I have taken the subdivision plat maps into MI and have drawn the streets over them on cosmetic layer and saved as separate tables. Now I would like to add them to the street data table. So a couple of issues come up: 1) when I save and close out then reopen the maps, they are rotated! How can I avoid or correct this rotation? 2) How can I "insert" the new streets onto my mega street map, and get them in the correct place, i.e., georeference them? I have begun "playing" with this project for the summer and thought perhaps before I got too far into it, would seek advise from those in the know. Perhaps an additional question should also be: can I just edit, i.e., increase the address ranges for the new street segments in the mega table and then increase the length of the street segments? Thanks in advance.
