RE: MI Lack of mail!!

 move list to a newsgroup

In one sense I agree completely, newsreader software is
much smarter about threads 'n such and much nicer to use.

On the other hand, our firewall at work blocks the newsgroup
ports (and no amount of pleading on my part will change it.
I've tried). Also at my home ISP does not carry many
newgroups and a fairly high volume one like MI would not be
considered to due the low number of GIS people in my area.

Web-based newsgroup access is more or less pointless from
my viewpoint - you lose most of the usability, while putting
up with ton's of slow downloading and fast animating ads.
The only real gain here is the ability to search past posts,
and browse without subscribing.

A mirror situation could work though: those of us unlucky
enough to be able incapable of using newsgroups could
continue with email.

my 2 cents.

MI RE: Free RDBMS

2000-05-10 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Someone was asking the other day about a free relational
database management system. I recently saw a bit of info
about miniSQL which you can get from http://www.hughes.com.au
Its supposed to be free or at least very cheap.

I suggest you read:
http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/rdbms.html
which is well organized and devoted to information about relational
database systems, primarily dealing with those database systems
available under Linux.

For DB names you can search for:
MySQL
PostGreSQL
InterBase

RE: MI AND AV in the same office?

2000-05-03 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Robert/ donna et al,

We use ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, and occassionaly AutoCAD,
Pamap, and Illustrator. Each progam has their strong points
but the problem of handling multiple datasets which are
identical in content but different in format is a major
pain in the asp. Recently I discovered a misclassified
road. It took me 5 minutes to fix it once in ArcInfo. And
then another 5 to fix it again in MapInfo. And then...

Several times we've contemplated settling down on just one
program, but no single program ever meets all of our needs.
We're also leary of putting all our eggs in one basket.
What if, say, ESRI decides Avenue is no more and development
and support cease? Or MapInfo decides a minumum of 5 clicks
is okay for turning layers on and off forevermore?

My biggest wish is for the development and widespread
adoption of a non-proprietary "GISML" standard so the
mapping community can reap similar benefits to what we've
seen with HTML and the world wide web. I bet I've spent
at least 30% of my GIS time in the last 8 years "merely"
massaging and pummeling data from one program format to
another.

So yes, multiple GISs are common, but be sure you look
before you leap. :)

MI WOW: Civilian GPS Selective Availability gets turned off tonight at midnight!

2000-05-01 Thread Matt.Wilkie

-Original Message-
From: Chris 'Xenon' Hanson
Sent: Monday, May 01, 2000 11:13 AM

http://www.whitehouse.gov/library/PressReleases.cgi?date=0briefing=0

The intentional degradation of civilian-grade GPS signals (known as
Selective Availability) has now been judged to be unnecessary and
will be switched off at midnight tonight, May 1, worldwide.

  What does this mean?

Now, consumer-grade GPS units will have a positional accuracy several
times better than they previously did. SA limited single-unit GPS fixes
to typically no better than 50-100m accuracy. Estimates are that with SA
off, these units could be from 0m to 70m more accurate.

Here is the results of a quick search relating to these topics:

http://www.google.com/search?q=gps+sa+selective+availability+accuracy+30+met
ermeta=lr%3D%26hl%3Den

This is exciting stuff for the GIS and remote sensing fields.

RE: MI Reporting spam fraud

2000-03-21 Thread Matt.Wilkie

I tried to find a law enforcement Web site with an email address to
which I could forward it; but found none. (You can't even report a
murder on the Web, let alone this).

There is little law enforcement for the net because the net by
it's very nature spans multiple jurisdictions and thus variant
rules and regulations. What is illegal in the US is not
necessarily so in Canada or in Sweden or in Thailand.

That being said, there are things we can do. A very good place
to find information on how to fight back is http://spam.abuse.net/.
I will forewarn you that it can quickly get involved and time
consuming though.

If you want to do something about spam, but don't feel like
decoding headers and tracing upstream providers, a quick and
easy action is to forward all your spam mail (with complete

MI: VML home page?

A while ago there was a reference about standards for vector
transfer specifications on the web. I was sure that it was
called VML ...

I think that what you want is at http://www.vrml.org/

Virtual REALITY Markup Language. Many sites on this topic

Virtual Reality Markup Language was developed specifically
for immersion in 3D environments and is not really concerned
with geospatial data, though it has been used that way.

There is also the Vector Markup Language which I believe is
what Robert is looking for: http://www.vmlsource.com/

MI SUM: colour laser printer recommendations?

2000-03-08 Thread Matt.Wilkie

There were a lot of repsonses to this one and I encountered
another sum on Esri-L shortly after I asked my question.
If anybody wants the full text of both, (ie: a digest) email
me.

Original question:

Our office is considering purchasing a colour laser
printer. It would be used for small maps (11x17),
brochures newsletters as well as your standard
everyday printing of memos and letters.

Does the list have any recommendations? love stories?
horror stories?

The responses categorized by vendor are summed immediately
following. There are some general notes on printing
technology at the bottom which is well worth noting.

BY VENDOR

Canon ImageClass C2100: expensive to startup but cost per
page is low. It gives great prints, but has tricky colour
matching relative to inkjet - need driver adjustments to
match (close enough) screen colours. A minor annoyance is
that it takes a long time to wake up from sleep mode, but
once awake prints are fast
(1 response)

Minolta copier/printer CF910: On the whole, it seems to be
a good machine. There are unresolved questions regarding
inconsistent line-widths. It has an add-on print server
called a Fiery 2Xe. The model of copier one down from this
has poorer print quality.
(1 response)

Xerox 5750: great! does double duty as colour copier
(1 response)
[NB: Xerox and Tektronics are now the same company]

Lexmarks: the Lexmark Optra 1275 C was loved, while the
(unknown model) was hated. Reasons for hate: colours not
true, banding, finicky cartridges. Reasons for love:
1200dpi, easy networking (no server needed), automatic
language selection, excellent output on various media.
(3 respondants)

QMS Magicolor 330: wide range of responses, ranging from
"underwhelmed" and "there is no magic" to "way to go".
Those who didn't like it cite colour problems and indistinct
line work. The fellow who do like it, didn't give much
detail.(3 responses)

Tektronics Phasers are generally popular and well liked
though a few were less than satisfied. Finickiness with
selecting paper sizes, colour matching, and high maintenance
were the usual reasons for dissatisfaction. They also
produce "gargantuan plot files that amble through a 100
base T network". Works well in a multi OS environment.
(8 respondants)

HP as usual is at the top of the list. (13 responses)
Does this reflect technical superiority or greater mindshare
and trust?

HP 8500DN: A good all purpose workgroup colour printer
which is relatively fast. I can't really give anymore details
than that, because as is usual those who like it, say "It's
great!" and no more. :) There was a warning about expensive
supplies. Perhaps the most significant fact is that nobody
complained.

HP 4500DN: Lesser model to the 8500, still liked. Only 2
repondants mentioned this printer.

GENERAL NOTES

It is probably more effective, both in terms of usage time
and cost (maintenance and purchase), to have 2 dedicated
printers, one for colour and one for general purpose BW,
than to find an all in one solution. In this scenario the
HP2500 is recommended for colour because the cost is lower
(than 4/8500) and there is not a difference in print speed for
full colour images.

Quoted in full because of it informative value:
-= Peter Halls:

We use Lexmark HP colour lasers, and have looked at the QMS
and Tektronix machines as well. My advice would be "if colour
quality matters, stay with ink-jet".

This is a technology issue. Although the dye technology used
in ink jets is advanced, and offers pretty close to pure primary
shades, this soes not yet seem possible with colour lasers.
Despite the pigment primaries being cyan, magenta and yellow,
some of the colour lasers use the light primaries, red, green
and blue! The cym pigments we see are not very pure - cyan
probably being the best, as a result all colour mixes tend to
end up a bit 'muddy'. I've not seen any laser that manages to
mix its primaries and achieve as good a colour as the ink jets.
I suspect that the reason some use rgb pigments is that most
business graphics seem to use those colours and the manufacturers
recognise that the cannot, in particular, obtain a good red from
the cym laser toners. I do not know if there is an issue
concerning the need for heat in the fusing process that is
involved here, this would certainly be a possibility.

My colleagues chose the laser over inkjet in our move from
thermal wax because they though[t] the inkjets would need
constant maintenance and operator attention, and that they
were apparently fast. No one seems to be satisfied with the
colour quality, and our central colour printing load has sunk
whilst almost everyone seems to be buying a colour inkjet for
the desktop!

OUR DECISION

We've opted for a 3 printer solution: The HP 1055CM for very
fast inkjet prints up to 36" wide, the Epson Stylus Colour
3000 for slower 720x1440 dpi colour up to 13x19", and an old
HP laserjet 4M for black and white everyday

RE: MI AD: Elevation Data Software CD-ROM

2000-01-18 Thread Matt.Wilkie

To all list-server participants,

I am sorry for the cross-listings that appeared
yesterday. On an occasional basis, monthly
or every other month for the last year, I have
been sending out an email advertisment about
some "rather inexpensive" data and software
products I have assembled...

I have to admit my first reaction on seeing your msg was
to slap the delete key. When I ran into it again on the
MI list I actually read it asnd realised it was relevant
and not really spam. Anyway the point is, we are getting
hypersenstive to anything which even resembles unwanted
and irrelevant commercial intrusion. You know, like too
much exposure to certain kinds of dust or pollen can
provoke allergic reactions to benign paticles.

In this case I don't think you had to apologize (although
it is good that you did). Your subject line was very
clearly labeled as an AD and perhaps now there are a few
more people who will notice that and filter by it.

cheers,

MI Layout refresh annoyance

2000-01-04 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Does anybody else experience the following behaviour and
(hopefully) have a suggestion for what to do about it?

If the layout is the active window, every time a different
tool or toolbar is selected a refresh is forced. The refresh
is unstoppable -- ESC doesn't work, indeed, in some
circumstances pressing ESC forces a *double* refresh.

The Recipe:

1) Create a layout with one frame on top of another. For example
a base a map with a key map in one corner.
2) Set at least one frame's source property to 'None'
3) Click an icon on one toolbar, then a different toolbar.
Voila. refreshes

It doesn't matter which frame is set to none. It doesn't
matter if *all* frames are set to none, though this is
slightly more bearable because at least it's faster.

Is there some mapbasic code or something so you can get
on-demand-only refreshing (eg. only when I ask specifically
for a refresh? bound to key like F9? or the middle mouse
button?). I waste a lot of time everyday waiting for
unecessary screen refreshes and it's getting really
irritating.

Actually, while I'm thinking about productivity, how can you
define keyboard shortcuts? I'd really like to be able to
switch between tools with a key stroke. Similar to Illustrator
or Photoshop: S for select, Z for zoom, P for input Polygon,
etc. The mouse aerobics are hurting my wrist.

cheers,

-matt

MI DEM Review, request for contribution

I'm currently in the process of reviewing the quality of

Is there someone here who is knowledgeable with Vertical

Eventually the results and some commentary will be placed
on our website, with credit given where due of course.

RE: MI DEM Review, request for contribution

1999-12-01 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Programs generally don't create DEMs, they read them.

Are you referring to the manipulation of DEMs? Perspective
viewing? Speed?
Quality of shaded maps or contours? Interpolation of a surface
from a few XYZ points?

"generally" depends on which "general area" of activity you
are in. :) I'm in the area of creating dems. And to be more
precise, a DEM can be a specific product/file format or a
general term describing elevation models in general (there's
that word again :).

For my project, I'm evaluating the quality of elevation models
created by various programs from a specific vector dataset.
Quality in this context is a nebulously defined mix of my own
peculiar blend of aesthetics and objectivity. The tools I will
be using in my quest include sunshade relief, re-contouring,
perspective views, and anything else I can think of to help
shed light.

MI OffTopic: GRASS GIS released under GPL

1999-11-01 Thread Matt.Wilkie

==
Press Release
October 23, 1999

GRASS Development Team

GRASS GIS Released Under GNU General Public License!
Geographic Resources Analysis and Support System (GRASS) Geographic
Information System (GIS) has entered a new era with its resurrection by the
GRASS Development Team. The Team, headquartered at Baylor University, is
made up of researchers at Baylor and University of Hannover, Germany, with
cooperators at the University of Illinois. GRASS is a full-featured GIS that
runs on all Unix and Linux operating systems, thus making it a powerful tool
for research groups.

The GRASS GIS, which was originally developed by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, found a new home for support in the GRASS Development Team in
1997. Since that time, GRASS has enjoyed resurgence in popularity around the
globe. However, the problem of licensing was never quite resolved. Until
today.

Since GRASS was initially developed by the U. S. Government, it was
considered Public-Domain. However, the GRASS Development Team is not
government funded and so needed a way to protect the developers and license
the GRASS GIS software.

As of October 25, 1999, GRASS is released under the terms of the Gnu Public
License (GPL). The GPL is part of the Free Software Foundation, a non-profit
group that licenses most software developed as "freeware" by universities
and individuals. This makes GRASS the first fully featured GIS that is
released worldwide under the GPL.

For more information, contact the GRASS Development Team via email at

Granted, I'm still using it. As I said: I love it.

Nicely put.

time I work with MapInfo I feel this "cross your fingers and
hope it looks the same way next time" feeling. (Is it just me?)

No.

(Does your Map menu have a redraw button the way help says
it should?)

No, but it used to (at least I seem to remember it that way).
You can use Redraw by pressing Ctrl-D though.

Your never-efficient-enough-for-my-own-expectations colleague
(and efficiency is the real crux of why I'm annoyed),

Definately. Just yesterday I spent 3 hours printing ~75 workspaces.
Open workspace: adjust page size: (wait for abominally long refresh
which can't be ESCaped): print to file: type in workspace_name.prn:
wait: Close All: rinse, lather, repeat. Blech!

[btw: v5.5 saves the printer settings in the workspace, but only sort
of. What printer to use is saved, but page size is not (it always picks
the default page size). So don't upgrade only for that feature. Oh
yeah, buffering is m u c h s l o w e r in v5.5 too.]

Place my two tables that I want to join in the FROM
section. In my Where category set the two "key fields
equal. The result will be a query table. Should you want
to keep this, Save Copy As.

I think we would all agree that the ArcView join is much
simpler.

No, we won't. At least not until you explain to the list the steps
needed to obtain the *same* result in ArcView.

In AV: open the two tables to be joined, select the two column
headings which will provide the link id's, press 'Join' button.
Very quick and painless. Don't know how it's done in Avenue.

RE: MI Spammer redux

Looks like the spammers will ruin this list as they have done others.
What are the possibilities of establishing an alternate? This is much
too valuble of a forum to let the spammers ruin it.

Unfortunately I think that would cause more problems than it solves.
It would only take a couple of months at most before the spammers
found the new list. Don't forget there's an online searchable mailing
list archive, and that's much too useful to hide.

The only potentially viable solution I can think of is something similar
to the way Junkbuster filters ad graphics (see junkbusters.com).
Basically it consists of a personal proxy and a blackhole list of banned
servers and regular expression matches for stripping particular
graphics. Eg: if it looks like .../ads/nike_banner.gif kill it.

While this technology works, it does require very careful regex
construction so you don't inadvertantly strip wanted material and
needs to be continually maintained.

RE: MI spammer

1999-09-22 Thread Matt.Wilkie

I like the last idea, spamming the spammers. It might be
interesting to talk with other lists and form a loose
anti-spam group. When a spammer sends mail to any of the
lists, all of the lists send 1000's of replies back.

The problem with that is the ReplyTo email address is almost
always fake; same with the SentFrom addy. It is difficult to
determine what the real address might be. See Adrian's excellent
summation (titled Guilty (another spam anecdote...)).

As Adrian noted, the messages re:spam outnumber the original
spam by nearly 10 to one. I'm a guilty participant, so this will
be my last post on the subject. :)

cheers,

-matt

PS: Adrian, thanks for the Spamspade.com link, but listers
should note it is http://www.samspade.org/, not .com.

MI Updating a table text field

1999-09-08 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Hi,

I have a question which I'm sure is a FAQ, but have not been able to locate
the answer, my apologies if it's right in front of my face, but I just don't
see it. :)

I have some records in which I need to update a text field. How do I update
them en mass?

The scenario: adding a text label/id to stream watersheds. Currently I
select the relevant vectors, browse the selection table, paste an identical
text string a few hundred times into the "ws_id" field.

thanks,

-matt

MI bug verification request: change default printer

1999-09-08 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Hi,

Can anybody help verify a possible bug in MI v5.5?

Open a workspace with a few tables and a layout, minimize MI,
go to StartSettingsPrinters and change your default printer. KaBlam!
Instant Dr. Watson, for me anyway.

I'm using MI 5.5 on NT4sp4 on a single PII450 w/256 ram.
Printer drivers are Epson Stylus Color 3000, HP DesignJet 1055cm, HP DJ
2500cp, HP LaserJet 4L/4ML PostScript (all printers networked, tcp/ip only).

cheers,

MI SUM: pattern printing irregularities

1999-08-26 Thread Matt.Wilkie

My orginal question was:

Has anybody else had problems printing patterns with v5.5?

If I select a sparse dotted pattern with a transparent
background, when printed the dots are are big, about .5mm
across.

If I take the same layer keep the same dot pattern and change
the background to opaque white, when printed from one
workstation, the dots are so fine and close together they form a
solid light colour; when printed from another workstation the
dots are sparsely spread out (like they're supposed to be) and
about .1mm across.

I recieved confirmation from several people, including MI Tech
Suupport. It only seems to occur with HP printers (or maybe,
everybody is using HP printers? Can somebody try and duplicate
this one a different brand?) It happens on both Win98 and NT.

It has been logged as problem #10158.

Col @ Magnorth reported a possibly related problem, but the
differences occured with colour not patterns. It was cleared up
when all three workstations standardized on the same video
driver.

RE: MI transperent pattern

1999-08-26 Thread Matt.Wilkie

But when I print the layout (on HP deskjet 1100C) the
pattern is no longer transperent. The raster is not printed.
The spaces in the pattern are white.

This is a recently documented bug, see the thread titled "pattern printing
irregularities" for more details.

So far as I know, a workaround or a fix has not been found. :(

cheers,

-matt

Both workstations are running NT v4sp4, MI 5.5 with the most
current Adobe PS driver (v5.1 (210)). The plotter is an HP 1055cm.
The problem is duplicated when printed to an HP 4ML LaserJet

Anybody else experience something like this?

RE: MI Internal Error 31109

1999-08-17 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Anyone ever see Internal Error 31109 on a HP650 Plotter. Help would be
appreciated!

I haven't seen it, but you might try and email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

They were helpful in tracking down a system error on our hp1055cm.
You need to use a specific format (temnplate at end of msg) if you want good

service. Or alternatively you can fill out a form on this web site:
http://www.designjet-online.hp.com/
You have to create an account (free), answer a bunch of questions and let
them cookie your hard drive. Turn around time is pretty good, ~24 hours.
The link to look for is "Email Support".

There is a list of the system error codes, but it's in the Service Guide,
not on
the web. You have to buy it, or bug them until they tell. The list price for
the
1055cm manual is $44usd and as of this morning they had 8 copies. Call
1-800-227-8164 for parts direct ordering; You'll need the model number
of your printer (design jets look like: C*A/B) .

Good luck,

-matt

I asked this question of MapInfo Tech Support a couple of

If anyone knows of any way to run these tools other than

MI batch table editing

1999-08-02 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Hi,

What is the best method of batch editing large numbers
of identical tables?

I have a couple of hundred tables to edit to apply standard
line/region styles to. Their record structure is identical. They
can be themed by a field called "classname" which contains
a text code: lake, river, island, wetland, sandbar, etc. So a
thematic map is possible, but laborious.

I've tried creating a Seamless Table via the Seamless Manager
tool, but it won't allow editing or creation of a thematic map
on the resultant seamless table. Seamless tables are a viable
solution for tables which only contain one object type (a
display overide can be used for all table contents).

I've tried using the "Select by Attribute" tool which selects
all objects having the same attributes as the currently selected
object. This is a great time saver, but it will still only work on
one table, and one object type, at a time.

MI RE: resource editor

1999-07-29 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Can anyone recommend a good (or even a bad) resource file
editor. I used to have one in the old borland c compiler that
allowed me to go into any executables or dll's to extract out
the icons, etc, but I can't seem to find the equivalent in VB.

If all you are after is the graphics, there a number of icon
extractors available. One of the best I played with is called
Microangelo
http://www.impactsoft.com/products/products.html

If you are looking to extract more than icons, perhaps the
free Cygwin GNU progammers toolkit has something (I'm not
a programmer so I don't really know).

I think I have to agree with Bill's alarm. I don't think we understand

SUM: MI batch pack table

1999-07-14 Thread Matt.Wilkie

My original post was:
--
Does anybody know a way of packing tables in batch mode?
I have about 3 thousand to go through.

Also, are there any known problems with data integrity when
packing tables? I'd hate to pack everything and then find out 6
months or a year from now I've lost data. Or worse yet, not
   notice at all.
--
and there was a flood of responses. Several people sent code,
and Eric Frost programmed something on the spot. A few
more mentioned how to capture MI code for making my own. To
keep the size of this post down, I'll simply put the coders' email
addresses at the bottom (so you can contact them for the code).
I've not yet tested all the code/progams so I don't have any
recommendations.

To capture code, open a Mapbasic window and then pack a table
the usual way. Then cut paste, modify to your situation.
Thanks to Dyan Catamaran [[EMAIL PROTECTED]] and andrew
whittam [[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

--- On Data Integrity ---
There is a data 'loss' problem if you use adjusted dynamic labels.
In this context 'adjusted' means you modify the position of an
automatic label. When a dynamic label is adjusted, the adjustments
are stored in the workspace with a pointer to the source table and
record row. When a table is packed, the number of rows changes,
and thus the relative position of the record. Workspaces are not
notified when table changes are made, and so the customized labels
no longer point to the correct record.

The obvious fix is for MapInfo to implement an automatic record id
code for all records, and then index by RecID instead of row number.
Implimenting a scheme like this would probably mean wide spread
changes throughout MI, so don't look for a fix from MI anytime
soon. You'll just have to live with kludges.

I was not informed of any other fixes or work arounds. Thanks go to
Trey Pattillo [[EMAIL PROTECTED]] and John Schlosser [[EMAIL PROTECTED]].

John has a web page at http://www.sgsi.com/labe0598.htm which
gives an in-depth discussion of various labeling "tips, tricks traps".

I was not informed of any other data integrity issues and two (of ten)
respondents said they have never lost any data. The other eight simply
did not say.

--- Code Toolboxes ---
These people all sent sample Mapbasic code or toolboxes. Contact
them to see what they have to offer. I think if all these people
collaborated we might have a really useful and well developed tool
on our hands. [nudge-nudge-wink]

Carol Sheehan [[EMAIL PROTECTED]], toolbox (pack all tables)
Sam Kome [[EMAIL PROTECTED]], toolbox (packrat)
Eric Frost [[EMAIL PROTECTED]], toolbox (packer)
Herve DORIER [[EMAIL PROTECTED]], code
Trey Pattillo [[EMAIL PROTECTED]], toolbox with code
(http://www.wap3.com/download/BTCHPACK.ZIP)

Thanks to everybody who responded and I hope I didn't forget anybody.
If anybody has an automatic method of identifying which tables have
associated adjusted dynamic labels I'd appreciate it.

RE: MI Printing using Mapinfo

1999-01-17 Thread Matt.Wilkie

image manipulation software (Photoshop for instance). You will
have to play with the image size output (you have a choice -
...
think the default option is either 72 or 98 dpi. Usually
anything 250dpi or higher prints just fine, but the files will
be huge. I generally double or triple the suggested
measurements to get a decent printable resolution.

Generally speaking, and for reasons I confess I don't understand
well, the dpi of the image should be half of the dpi resolution
of the output device. So, for a 300dpi printer, save your image
at 150dpi. Likewise for 600dpi printer use a 300dpi image.

I know it seems counter-intuitive, but the tests I've run bear
it out. The reason has something to do with a printer's LPI
(lines per inch) being half of it's addressable resolution -
DPI. I learned this from the Adobe PhotoShop helpfile (v4 if
I remember correctly).

Also bear in mind that different graphics programs handle
the printed size differently (the inches-on-paper dimension
is actually completely independant of pixels-on-screen or
the dpi number recorded in the file on your hard disk).

MI GIS Day is also Odd Day

1999-01-17 Thread Matt.Wilkie

Today, nov 19th, is GIS Day (yahoo!!! wheee!! yabba dabba doo!,
etc.), but I thought this little observation on world
demographics was appropriate for the event:

I just discovered something else cool about today too:
(from slashdot.org, in turn from an unspecified mailing list)

"Today is November 19th, 1999. The numerical format for today
is 19-11-1999. All of the digits are odd. The next Odd day
will be 1-1-3111 - which is well over a thousand years away,
which we will never see. Days such as 13-4-89 have both
even and odd digits, thus, it is neither odd nor even. The
next even day will be 2-2-2000 - the first one since
28-8-888. So, now you have a reason to celebrate this
Friday as it'll be your last odd day on Earth!"

Also:

- 11 and 19 are both primes, as well as odd numbers.
1999 is also prime, which makes this Prime Day, as well.

- 11:59:59 19/11/1999 is the last odd timestamp of our
lifetimes. It's also an entirely prime timestamp!

- If you write the date in British format (as most
countries do), 19/11/1999, then 19111999 is prime

- years 1 month 11 days number of days in the
interval between this odd day and the next one

So, Happy Odd Gis Prime Day Everyone!
