Simply changing the preferred view to New Mapper will load them into the

When MapInfo opens tables, if the table limits are outside the currently
opened window, a new window is opened instead. To avoid this, open only
the first table and then zoom way out. Then open the rest of the tables,
and they'll all fall into the open window, which will also solve your
seamless layer creation problem.

MI-L Server Disconnect Problem

2004-11-16 Thread Ian Hull
Hi,

I have opened a DBMS table (to an Access database), which works fine, but
when I close the DBMS connection it disables all non-MapInfo toolbars.
This happens whether it is done manually or by code. I've looked through
the archives and found one reference to this but no solution! I'm running
MI 5.5 (and MapBasic 5.5).

Re: MI-L Print the layout as a PDF

2004-12-23 Thread Ian Hull
Yep, that's the way to do it. You can also fix the output location here
e.g. c:\pdf. The file takes the window title as the default name e.g.
layout.pdf so you may want to issue a 'set window title' before printing
to give it a more meaningful name - particularly useful when used in a
loop!

I think you need to set the default parameters for distiller to not prompt
for a file name. Go to Printers, right-click on Distiller and it should be
in the Properties.

Hi all

I have to edit 100's of Workspaces. The workspaces all contain a
particular
MapInfo layer which I have to replace with another MapInfo layer.

So basically I'm after a text editor with
1 "Search and Replace" option(s)
2. Ability to process a number of selected files (ie .wor's) at one time

Please note I have 4th Beach's workspace control, but unfortunately it
does
not have the batch capability that I need

Is anyone aware of any software (off-the-shelf, shareware etc) that
meets
the above requirements

Thanks in Advance

Good luck

MI-L Ends of buffer

2005-03-03 Thread Ian Hull
Hi All,

I'm trying to write a Mapbasic program (V5.5) to identify the two end
points of a series of buffers (around polylines - and no the polylines are
no longer available!). Some of the buffers are U shaped so max/min
functions return the wrong results. I'm thinking along the lines of
re-creating the original polylines or determining the maximum internal
distance? Has anyone got any other suggestions or better yet a tool that
does the job!

It is not a rumor anymore. MapInfo 8.0 has been released and I have already
had a look at it. Some nice new features has been added.

One feature that I could have used years ago when I did a lot of
vectorization is the Stream digitizing that adds a new node to a
polyline/polygon when you move the cursor more then x pixels.

Here is a list of new features in MapInfo 6.5 to 8.0:
http://www.critchlow.co.nz/library/MI%20Files/MapInfo_Professional_8_Comparison_Sheet.pdf

Remember that MapInfo 8.0 is still based on the old code base, so we are
not talking about the .NET version which now is known as the "Grande"
project

I would advocate that any sort of comparison take place on the pending Pro
8.0 versus an old code emulated by many. Given that the rumor of the
release for MapInfo Pro 8.0 is for this month, I'd wait a few days before
discounting the MapInfo offering as suggested.

I strongly disagree - painfully slow? You've got to be kidding!

And look at the last week (or year) of posts here on MapInfo-L about
MapInfo Professional's problems with MS Access; contrast that with the
database facilities in Manifold 6+ and its powerful spatial SQL ...

I main thing wrong with Manifold is that it's priced too low.

Right off the bat i can say that i would not reccomend Manifold over
Mapinfo for day to day desktop mapping. THis is mainly because it is
painfully slow. I have found it usefull as a extra utility, but don't rely
on it (like i do
mapinfo) for day to day work. That being said, it's not a bad deal for
$300 or whatever it costs now, assuming you also have Mapinfo, ArcView, or
a compararble desktop product.

RE: MI-L Reverse Selection

2003-07-14 Thread Ian Hull

Ash,

That method will not work if the objects intersect (obviously) which
include objects which share a common point e.g. two roads at a junction or
a boundary file. It also won't work if some records don't have map objects.

The best way is to use a unique field on the table. (If you haven't got a
unique field you can easily add a new column and update it with rowid).
Then you can use

select * from MYTABLE where MYTABLE.UniqueField <> all(select UniqueField
from selection)

MI-L Application Error

2003-11-04 Thread Ian Hull
Hopefully someone can help me or the PC gets it.

I've just installed MI 7.0 (patched) on a new machine with Windows 2000 SP
3, 512mb and I'm getting the following as soon as I start MI:

Hidden MAPINFOW.EXE - Application Error. The instruction at "??"
referenced memory at "??". The memory could not be "read". click OK to
terminate the program or cancel to debug

(??= I can't remember the numbers)

I've tried rebooting, repairing, uninstalling, reinstalling, installing MI
version 5.5, installing Win 2000 SP4.

I've checked the archive and there are quite a few instances of this but

MI-L Layout windows and printers

2004-01-29 Thread Ian Hull
Hi,

I'm trying to write an application (MapInfo/Mapbasic 5.5) to create layout
windows with stuff in e.g. text/objects/map windows etc. The problem I'm
trying to overcome is printing to different printers. On one printer
everything is fine but on another, with a different printable area, some
stuff is lost in the margins. If I use the common printable area then the
available space becomes too small and the margins too large. I'm trying to
use the Windows API call to GetDeviceCaps to obtain the printer
capabilities - x/y offsets, papersize etc. so I can create a layout
tailored for each printer. However, this seems to return slightly different
values with each call for the same printer.

Has anyone else come across this problem or am I barking up the wrong tree
with getdevicecaps??

Any (polite) suggestions welcome!!

Cheers,

Ian Hull

Thanks to all the responses. Everyone pointed me to the OS Boundary Line
product, which is available to me through the SLA. However, according to
the OS website some of the changes to wards in districts in Greater

are being used for the forthcoming elections) so I was sort of hoping for
another avenue..

MI-L Crystal Reports

Hi,

I have created a report in Crystal Reports (CR) which I open from my

Open Report and Create Report. Can I dde to CR?

MI-L MapX

2002-10-09 Thread Ian Hull

Hi,

We currently run MapInfo 5.5 and I've just been asked if our existing
workspaces/tables/MapBasic applications/links to Access and Excel etc will
work in MapX. I know absolutely nothing about MapX so, short of me
downloading a trial copy, could anyone tell me simply either yes they will
work or no they won't. If no, what are the major problems and how much work
will it be to overcome them - a broad idea e.g. minor amendments, a fair
amount of work, complete rewrite.

MI-L GPS and Geotrack

2001-05-04 Thread Ian Hull

Listers,

I have connected my Garmin GPS to my laptop and I can track my movements in
MapInfo using the Geotrack application (bundled with MI). I can manually
store my location using the GPS Point Geocode option within geotrack. What
I would like to do is automatically store my location (and time), say every
10 seconds. Is there an option I'm missing or is there another way of
copying effectively the track symbols to a table?

If there isn't an option, is there any code that a second MapBasic
application can use to either save the location or prompt geotrack to do a
'manual' geocode.

Failing this does anyone know of software that will do this.

Many thanks,

MI-L Memory problem

2001-05-14 Thread Ian Hull

Hi,

I'm sure that this has been asked recently but I can't recall the responses
and my internet connection is down so I can't check the list.

I'm running a MapBasic application which takes about 3 minutes to run. If I
rerun the application on the same data it takes over 10 minutes to run
(even if I issue a close all statement before rerunning). The only way to
get the application to run in 3 minutes again is to close MapInfo and
restart it. Is there any way to get MI to release memory or reset itself?

RE: MI-L Convert Back

In the past I have simply used a text editor (notepad) to edit the *.tab
file and change the version number in there i.e. change the line !version
450 to !version 400 . This saves the exporting and importing. As Spencer
points out this will not work if your new version has objects not allowed
in the older version.

MI-L Setting Ruler Font

2001-06-26 Thread Ian Hull

Hi,

I'm trying to change the font in the ruler window (either in a workspace or
MapBasic). I've tried using the following:

Set Window Ruler Position (0.47,5.51) Units "in" Font
("Arial",1,9,0,16777215)

This correctly sets the position but does not change the font. (The same
construct works for the Message window.)

Am I missing something ? or is it not possible? I'm using MI5.5.

MI-L SUM : GML and MI

2001-09-06 Thread Ian Hull

Thanks for the replies.

It appears that MI can't read GML and there are no plans to do so. The only
option is to use a converter.

I believe OS have plans such that (from March 2003?) maps will be served
over the web to your mapping software (or at least updates) ,so if you need
a converter I assume this is a non-starter. Anyway -

The products suggested are:

a single seamless table which looks at 75 raster tables. I keep this map
window minimised and use the other map window for navigation and drawing
various objects. I have written MapBasic code that recenters the raster map
based on the non-raster map and creates a layout window which contains
(amongst other things) the two map windows in frames. The problem is that
the raster map in the layout is blank until I open the raster map window
and allow it to display all of the raster tables in the map area.

Is there any way (in code) of getting MI to refresh the seamless table and
open the raster maps required for a map window without that window being
the active window?

I hope this makes sense

Many thanks,

Ian Hull

Re: MI-L Displaying Raster Maps

2001-10-25 Thread Ian Hull

Bob,

The layout frame is blank because the map window itself is blank, so
refreshing the layout has no effect. What I need is to get the map window
to read in the appropriate seamless raster table. The seamless raster map
only seems to load the map tables that are needed for display. When the map
is moved to a new location the tables are closed again, but unless the map
is active the new tables are not loaded. The only way I can get this to
work is to make the raster map the active map and it redraws itself (given
time). The solution is not very pretty as the user sees the map appear and
disappear.

Hi Ian

The layout window has an option you can set, that controls when a frame
within the layout is refreshed.

Possibly this might fix the problem. On Layout - options - show frame
contents. Try setting this to always.

MI-L SUM Displaying Raster Maps

2001-10-26 Thread Ian Hull

Many thanks to Bob Young at By Design who came up with an explanation and
a solution (below) that works without having to make the raster map the
active window.

Again, thanks to everyone who replied,

Hi Ian

After a bit of experimenting I think I have found a workaround to this.
It would appear that the layout frame "shares" a memory bitmap with the
map, and shares a source set of tables. When you move the map to a
different raster image the list does not get updated because the map is
not visible and the layout is not programmed to refresh from the
seamless layer - instead using the existing selection - which is now
perhaps off the proposed area of interest.

However my workaround is to use "Save Window as" in your code. This also
seems to share the same bitmap and does "know" that it needs to reread
the seamless layer. However you will need to recentre the map twice.

ie

set map window idMap center ( myValX, myValY)
save window idMap "c:\temp\temp.bmp" type "BMP"
set map window idMap center ( myValX, myValY)

This is inefficient as a disk write takes place - but works!

Perhaps you could experiment with keeping the image as small as
possible, and in a compressed format like GIF - after all you do not
want it. However the image getting saved must include your full area of
interest otherwise the list of raster source files will not cover all
your area - but just the area it needs to write. The two calls to map
centre are necessary. The first resets it but as you have found does not
open the files. The save window forces the appropriate files to get read
for your new centre but still does not redraw your layout. The second
set centre updates your layout.

I think you have identified a "feature" that could be resolved in
MapInfo source code. The layout should be programmed to reread the
seamless layers MBRs and load the appropriate files rather than reuse
the existing selection from the seamless layer.

I'm pretty confident this workaround resolves your problem.

Regards

Bob

[MI-L] British National Grid Projection

2006-04-11 Thread Ian Hull

Hi all,

I'm currently using the following to setup my British National Grid projection  - I'm not sure where the bounds clause came from and changing it makes slight differences to the output. I was just wondering what other UK users use as their projection and whether there is a "standard" in use.

set CoordSys Earth Projection 8, 79, "m", -2, 49, 0.9996012717, 40, -10 Bounds (-7845061.1011, -15524202.1641) (8645061.1011, 4470074.53373)

[MI-L] PCX files

2006-07-18 Thread Ian Hull

Hi All,

I have just come across a curious problem with MapInfo 8.5.  I have a set of registered pcx raster files on a network drive. If I try and open the tab file, MI crashes with a fatal error. If I copy the pcx and tab file to my C drive the table opens fine. If I convert the network pcx to a tif (and amend the .tab accordingly) then the table opens fine. The network pcx/tab files worked fine with MI 7.5.

Has anyone else had come across this?

[MI-L] Integrated Mapping

2006-08-09 Thread Ian Hull

Hi All,

I'm trying to use the following command to save a copy of a map window opened via integrated mapping by MSAccess

MIObj.Do "Save window  frontwindow() as ""c:\junk.wmf"" type ""wmf"""

This works fine the first time but all subsequent times (without rebooting the PC) fail with a message:

"Unable to save window contents. Check for sufficient memory".

Any suggestions?

Ian Hull
