MD: Neato MD labels

1999-08-11 Thread CVoris1

I recently purchased some Neato MD labels and so far, I think they're
wonderful. However, I find that since I store most of my MDs in Case Logic
folders, which will not hold the MD in its slip case, I either wind up making
a label for the case that I don't really need, or else just wasting the case
label. I have sent a suggestion to Neato that in addition to their current
labels, they might consider producing sheets of only the labels for the face
and spine of the MD. This would allow them to put at least 3 times as many
face labels on the same size sheet. If anyone else here who uses Neato
lables thinks this is a good idea, you might consider sending along a comment
of your own through their website at www.neato.com. Just click the "Contact
Us" box at the bottom left-hand side of the page and fill in the blanks.

MD: TOC cloning and IR eye

1999-08-11 Thread MiniDisc Trading Spot

Yesterday i made TOC cloning with my new JE 730
I cloned a 80 mins long track from a 80 mins long disc onto a 74 mins disc.
Then i had to overwrite that track, cause when i delete that track on the
cloned disc, it would be reset to 74:59 mins.
So i overwrote that track, and recording stopped at 78:52, so i was able to
quench 3 minutes out with the TOC cloning procedure.
But if ,after i recorded those 78 minutes, press "delete all" it is again
reset to 74:59.

So far these are my experiences with TOC cloning.

Thanks for your tips on disabling IR on my 510, but the idea with the
scotch tape was also one of my first ideas, but it did not work, then i
tried to cover the IR-window with my thumb, but still it reacted, then i
covered more and more of the front, but the IR did not stop to react, until
i had covered the front with my hand from On-Off Switch to middle of display.
But i don't want to Stick scotch over a quart of the front
:-)

Thanks
Thomas

with them), I think JR is better than the mega stores like Best Buy or
Circuit City. Not just better, actually... WY better! :-)
=END QUOTE=

They are independent chains in their own countries rather than one big
multi-national chain but all seem to support the concept of aggressively
undercutting everybody else's prices when selling hi-fi gear. They also
support a cheap but aggressive and effective way of advertising these goods.
JB Hi-Fi also aggressive undercut everyone else when selling CDs; and now
they are selling Region 4 DVDs for $A29.95 for a new-release movie.

MD: CD-ROM with Digital out

1999-08-11 Thread Simon Mackay

Hi everyone!

I have a Creative 8x CD-ROM which has terminals on the back for some sort of
digital out. If I wired those across an RCA socket, would that provide the
kind of SP-DIF digital signal expected by a consumer-grade digital recorder
or outboard DAC with coaxial sockets. On the other hand, would I need to
make an "interface circuit" in order to couple the CD-ROM to a
consumer-grade SP-DIF device.

Sometimes the CD-ROM has been known to stall, and sometimes cause the
computer to hang, in the midst of a playback session. How can I prevent this
from occurring during a playback session?

My 701 finally went back to Dixons yesterday, and the shop assistant
mentioned that if it cannot be repaired, then they will give me vouchers to
the price of what I payed for it (250ukp appx). Now the big question is...
should I get the 722? I liked the sound on the 701 and it looked pretty
cool in chrome, but is the 722 any good (I know it is the replacement).
What have the em dee masses experienced?

Buying from Transco.co.uk

I ordered some data MD's yesterday evening at 16:20 from Transco and they
were 7.20ukp (ex vat) each for the Sony MD140A's. They also deliver next
day so they should be around here sometime after 10:00am.

Just thought I'd let you lot know... one thing I had to talk to a human...
they cannot take orders on their website and they don't advise emailing
them orders either... they prefer fax/voice.

MD: MDX-65 problems...

1999-08-11 Thread Timothy P. Stockman

I'm having problems playing discs in an MDX-65 changer.
I have it connected to a RM-X69RF controller. Right now
its sitting on the workbench running from a 12VDC bench
supply. The audio output is connected to a powered speaker.

When it is running, the display indicates normal operation.
I can see the track numbers and time, etc. The problem is
that I get no audio output. The discs in the player were
recorded in mixed mono/stereo (mostly mono) and play
back fine on my JE520 and MZ-EP11. I've checked the
obvious like the digital/analog switch in the analog position.
This may be a clue: when I look at the TOSLink connector,
there is no visible light (even with the switch in digital).

I've had this problem with 2 units now (the first I exchanged
as defective). Can anyone offer me any suggestions or
let me know their experiences with the MDX-65?

My CD Rom (Panasonic?) has 2 small pins on the back of the cct bd for
digital out.
I couldn't find a suitable plug so I soldered a length of coax cable
directly to them and terminated the other end with an RCA plug.
It plugs directly into the coaxial input on my JA3-ES and works great -
track marks are also captured OK.
This does not work with all CD Rom drives - there have been reports of
the start of tracks not being recorded and track marks missing etc.
If you only have an optical input you will need to build a small toslink

In my answer to Simon I wasn't clear enough.

I gave the URL for the toslink converter circuit, which is needed only if
you want to connect your CD-ROM drive
to an optical input or some device, if one has a Coax input in his/her

sorry, this seemed like the easiest way to get an answer for my
frustrating problem, i am sure it is very common. anyway, as of
today, i own a SHARP MDS702 recorder. I used the analog inputs, and
plugged the rca cords into the video 2 rec in input, then set the
reciever to CD, and tried to record, i had the recording levels and
all set up, then i pushed play, and recording began, after about 5
seconds the display of my sharp read : DEFECT!, i looked it up in
troubleshooting and it said this means the MD you are recording on is
scratched, i then opened up a new never used MD, and again, it said
DEFECT! after 5 seconds. what is wrong, and what do i have to do, i
tried calling sharp, that got me absolutely no where.

Had the unit ever recorded properly for you? If not, it sounds DOA.
There is no "wrong operation" from the front panel that will produce
"DEFECT", if you are seeing this on multiple new MDs, the unit has a
problem.

also another problem i have, when playing pre recorded MD's on my
stereo, i tried plugging the analog cord into Phono input, that
didn't produce any sound, whats the deal? what do i have to do to
play my sharp over my stereo..

You will want to connect from the headphone jack on the Sharp unit to
the "LINE IN" jack(s) on your stereo. The phono input is usually a low
level input with equalization that will probably produce a distorted
sound if connected to your Sharp (and I suppose it is possible to
damage your stereo by plugging your MD player into it).

Rick
