Re: MD: OT: Linux
The most critical thing is I must be able to boot into Win98 intact, and also exit to DOS mode intact. Linux must'nt touch my files in base 640K memory (currently just 19K, despite having DOS EMS enabled, wow) If you have another emtpy harddisk or enough unpartitioned space for Linux there shouldn't be a problem. But if you have one disk that is completely covered by Windows, you must be very careful ! First thing I would do is making a backup of all your own data, text documents, spreadsheets, p0rn, whatever... :) Then you can try to decrease the size of Windows's partition. There's a free tool called FIPS that supposedly does this which comes with some Linux distributions. Or you get Partition Magic, which is included in Caldera Linux in some form I think. A cleaner way would be to erase the disk completely and do a proper partitioning, but a lot more work of course. If you use the standard LILO boot manager booting Win98 is no problem, I do it all the time. You can even set LILO up to boot Windows by default and Linux only if you intervene or the other way round. (Which is, of course, way better :) I don't know what you mean about EMS memory, but there is no such nonsense in Linux. Re: MD: Minidisc in VW Golf - trying to help a desperate friend
One of the cassette tape adaptors should work, some work better than others. If the tape goes in with the narrow edge first, the SOny is a good bet. However if it goes in with the wide end first, you may have some problems with the cable interfering with inserting the adaptor. In that case, look for one that the cable can come out the wide side of teh adaptor besides the narrow side. I have not had good results with the two FM broadcast adaptors that I tried. Besides, it is much more of a hassel to hook it up, find a clear station, and then tune to it. Every timy you turn a corner or get near a radio tower, it would cut out and the reciever would be captured by the local station. -- Jim Coon Not just another pretty mandolin picker mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If Gibson made cars, would they sound so sweet? Magic hits the PRINT key when he sees what Ralph Smeets wrote: Hmm, some DSP theory (applied in ALL MD equipment cappable of A/D D/A coversion (a little bit simplified in order to keep the mathematic mungle out): snip complicated maths stuff Ok, so it works vastly different from PC sound cards (the majority of which make things square off at low sampling frequencies). However, regardless of what happens to the end result, isn't the point that this type of distortion would effect the overall sound at these frequencies? It doesn't really make much difference if the end result is a triangle, square, sine, inverse sine, or wobbly sine with a pimple on top - the point is that it has changed the original wave form. -- Magic Location : Portsmouth, England, UK Homepage : http://www.mattnet.freeserve.co.uk EMail : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Not as far as Data storage was concerned, it was a real slug in that area. BBC Micro and Acorn Electron 2400bps BBC Master series 2400bps or 4800bps with stereo adapter I guess given MD audio is rather better than telephone quality, it should be able to store data with all the phase-shift stuff used by a 56K modem. Of course perhaps these v90 modems use signals the ATRAC algorithm would trash? Yes they do, but that doesn't mean achieving a higher data rate isn;t possible using combinations of tones an ATRAC algorithm wouldn't trash. If you calibratedthe volume, you could probably come up with a system that not only combined tones but also changes in volume to represent data bits. Phase shifting techniques are also not removed by ATRAC. There would be some quite sophisticated electronics to encode and decode the signal, but if you use a 22kHz tone and only represent 1 bit through phase shifting, that's still 22'000bps. If you applied some of the techniques modems use to this, I don't see why you should be able to achieve at 4 times that. Of course, when it comes to selecting individual files and obtaining directory listing of what is on the disk, then you might run into problems. -- Magic Location : Portsmouth, England, UK Homepage : http://www.mattnet.freeserve.co.uk EMail : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you connect the target adaptor to it, the voltage might be just fine; this behaviour is quite common with "cheap" transformators. MD: Important Zefiro Inbox announcement
Hello: Just a quick note for anyone considering the purchase of a Zefiro Inbox (mic preamp and A/D converter). We were just informed that as of 10-1-99, the manufacturer will no longer be selling these direct to re-sellers (that's us) and they will begin distributing them through Opcode systems (famous for the DATport/SONICport). The bad news is that the price is going to go up by $100, with the street price going from $295 to $395. Even at this price, it will still be one of the best values on the market in portable preamps-A/D converters, but for the next two days, we are selling thru our stock on hand at the old price. After 10-1-99, (if the minimum price policy stays in effect...at this point we don't know if it will or not), we will not be able to charge any less that $395 for this item. If you were considering this great little preamp-A/D converter, you might want to consider getting it soonthey are on our site here: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/adconver.html -- Best regards, Chris Carfagno The Sound Professionals 1-800-213-3021 1-856-629-1619 [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.soundprofessionals.com - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
