Try moving it to a different location. see if that helps. FM can be a
little quirky. What I don't understand is they didn't even put a mike
input on it. The silly MD people just don't seem to get the picture
that musicians, and there are a lot of them, from beginners to pros,
want to record with a mike.

Now here is a another comment that I recieved on the unit.

Hi Jim,

I bought one of these from Mercata a couple of weeks
ago and like it a lot. But it does not have a mike
input. It automatically copies CD's and cassettes to
MD. Even puts in separate tracks at the pauses.

Thanks for your on going info. I would
never have discovered MD if it were not for you.

Best regards,

Re: MD: Soundcards

2000-10-27 Thread Steve Corey

For about $40 total, the Zoltrix Nightingale with the optical upgrade
board will give you coaxial spdif in and out. It's a PCI card.

In order to get the coaxial input, you have to make a coaxial connector
that you can add onto some jumpers on the optical board. It's simple,
and if you screw up, you're only out $20 or so. Here's a website with
info:

That's an excellent Idea !!!

I use the Sharp MS-722 all day long and it's the best unit I bought since
the begining of minidisc...

I also bought the Sharp Audio System with 3 CD , 1 MD, Tuner and Cassette
and it's great for the price !

The sharp MS-722 is very robust, very strong and a great look ! (for guys,
my wife hate the design of this unit !)

This unit is full fonctional, all buttons on front pannel, slide-in MD and
you can put this unit in your pocket easily... I strongly recommand you this
great recorder player !

RE: MD: Xitel MDport-DG1 or Soundcard?

2000-10-27 Thread Peter Forest

Sorry if I'm not objective, but Xitel MD Port an1 and dg1 are the best
optical and analog port I ever used...

No conflicts, no installation (basic installation) it's USB port, don't need
to open your computer, for me, it's the best !

I don't sell DG1 anymore since there is, however, some conflict with some
kind of recorder player... They will fix this soon and then, I will probably
bought again from Xitel... Now I only sell the AN1 that I used too...

Pierre.

I'd just like to point out that if you want to use your computer for
lots of audio stuff (not just mp3-minidisc) then the SBLive is
probably not a good purchase, since it has very high latency.

You constantly read "Sound Blaster compatible". So why not get a Real
Sound Blaster in the first place?

Because that is referring to DOS drivers, even the SBLive is only
"compatible" (i.e. it emulates the DOS SB stuff).

Stay away from Turtle Beach or who ever makes them now.

Why? The Santa Cruz (their latest card) seems good from the
reviews I've read.

Roland makes an amazing sound card with a separate "port
 replicator". It costs about $400!

You can buy a soundcard made by Korg (the Oasys) that costs
$2000+. :)

I think it is designed mainly for musicians to use
(although it will work fine for anyone if you want to spend the
 money).

If you want to spend that much money, I'd recommend the M Audio
(a "sub-brand" of Midiman) Delta 66, it has digital out as well as
several other ports, and you can get it for about $279. It has no
MIDI port though.

It's kind of crazy that the companies we trust so much for audio
equipment don't make the sound cards. Don't you think there should be
Onkyo or Pioneer or Rotel or what ever sound cards? Even an Aiwa
 might be nice.

Those companies aren't really in the computer market, it's a whole
different type of thing, really. Most companies that make good
audio stuff only make really high-end soundcards anyway (e.g. the
aforementioned Korg card)

Now what about computer speed. It is also given in HZ. Since cycles per

Cycles per second is referring to how many cycles something goes through per
second. You yourself just said how descriptive it was... Hz in a computer
tells you how many full cycles the clock signal of the CPU completes every
second. In your car, you could use it to state the number of rotations the

Europe: 50Hz), etc.

That might not be exactly correct. You'd have to find an old audiophile
who was from one of those countries and see what term was used when we
used cps. Then you have to ask him what it meant to him. There are
many words in all languages that become known and accepted in other
languages.

So while a particular language might have their own words for each of
the individual words in their language, they might also understand the
phrase "cycles per second" to mean exactly that.

What language is the word Kilometer? It is understood in many
countries. The first thing that pops into my head (no pun intended)
when you the "official" terms for both male and female oral sex are not
English words. We have other slang words that are more common, Yet most
people would understand the foreign words.

Now here is where my dyslexia comes in when it comes to spelling. So
just sound it out, I'm sure the following phrase is not spelled
correctly. In Flagrant DeLecto or Inflagrandi. We have English words
to describe that (by the way, that's the way I want to die-in my
eighties with all of my faculties and a 21 year old model on top of me
just like my hero Nelson R. I'd like to be as rich as him too).

But we still also use the foreign term.

Hertz or HZ means nothing and even if you only use
the HZ, all you are saving is one letter.

 It's Hz,
(my dyslexia again)
and everyone who knows remotely what they're talking about will
know what you mean. A Hz is a second to the power of -1.

Everyone? I'll bet that there are many, many people who know that a
stereo with 20 to 20,000Hz is supposed to be very good (these same
people have never heard of the word "flat") but haven't a clue what the
Hz stands for.

 (US: 60Hz,
 Europe: 50Hz), etc.

But in the spoken word I still hear people refer to it as cycle as in
"sixty cycle". People don't call it Hertz.

Just for the hell of it a checked a very old amp that I have. It states
"60~" So at one time "~" meant cycle.

Once again one of my dumber posts has lead to a long thread and now it
even seems it has gotten to the point where people are starting to get
mean about it.

Thanks for the info. I ordered one. Hopefully it is an AUX input. The
apartment were I am moving to is small and I really don't have room for
the surround system that I have in my current bedroom.

The is one problem with Mercata. They add sales tax, However, they
don't even add the correct amount. They over charge you. I have
notified them about this.

I wonder if they pay the taxes to all 49 states- (DE does not have sales
tax). It is very unusual for most e commerce businesses to charge tax
except in the states were they are physically located.

The big "boys" do (like Lands End etc). Again I don't see why though.
Why bother with the extra bookkeeping since you are not required to?

I'll be that even the "big boys" "shave" they pay to outside states.
Think about it. A state outside of the state you are located in can not
audit your sales tax books because you have no legal obligation to
collect the tax in the first place.

You understate you gross sales by 25% and if you are big enough you have
picked up an nice little nest egg by the end of the year. After the FTC
thing with huge companies like Macys and Toys R US, I would not be
surprised to find these kinds of practices going on.

Lets face it. Anytime that a state collects any sales tax from a
company not located in that state it is a "gift" Though technically the
buyer is supposed to voluntarily pay the state tax, this almost never
happens.

So any tax the state gets from out of state is "found money". Be
careful of buying from neighboring states. I once bought $1000 worth of
audio equipment from a mail order company in NYC.

Three years later I got a letter from the PA tax department telling me
that the NY business had a tax audit and I owed PA $60 plus interest.
They didn't give me very long to pay it either.

If that ever happens again, I'm going to tell them about all of the mail
in rebates that I received as far as the statue allows you to go back
and request a refund plus interest.

If someone filed a class action suit against a state already have
financial troubles, if you won you might bankrupt the state. I really
think that a person would have a strong case with regard to rebates.

Why should a mail in rebate differ from an instant rebate? If you
receive an instant rebate, you are only taxed on the price that you
actually paid. On a mail in rebate, just because there is a delay, our
actual purchase price is still the price you paid in the store minus the
rebate.

Just my dumb 2 cents
Nasty Larry

(I have a tiny little part in an independent film called The Cancer
where I play this pervert into porn whose name is Nasty Larry. I film
porn and stuff like that, but it's a real small part (plus we have to
hope that someone will pick up the film).

BTW, Blair Witch was NOT shot on video. That's all BS. they did it to
hype the movie. But the movie I will be in is going to be shot on
video.

The quality of video is getting so good that it is approaching film. A
lot of what you see in films is really video (computer aided what ever
they call it) anyway transferred to film

MD: New to the List with a few Mini-disk related questions...

2000-10-27 Thread Bruce Preudhomme

Hi!

I have been into mini-disks for about the last 1 1/2 years (still learning
alot). I got rid of my cassette player in my car and got a mini-disk player,
I got rid of all the walk-man players and replaced them with portable
mini-disk player/recorders. Here are my questions:

1. Now that there is technology for CD-players to play MP3s directly from
CDs (in their compressed format), is there/will there be mini-disk units
that can directly decode and play MP3's?

2. I enjoy an occasional audio book (like The Celestine Prophecy and related
books), is there an easy way to get audio books that fit onto mini-disks
without having to be there to start and stop things to record them?

3. Okay, this may be a really dumb question but, is there a mini-disk
cartridge to plug into your car mini-disk player that allows you to feed in
sound from another device similar to all the cassette cartridges that play
anything from radio to CD players?

4. Where is the cheapest source for BULK blank mini-disks?

5. I understand that "MiniDisc Long Play" aka MDLP requires a new mini-disk
device, are they of the same sound quality, do they require special media,
and are they readily available in the US?

6. And finally, what is all this talk about multi-track MiniDisc-based
recorders?

Thanx for any light you can shed on these questions.

Take care...
