RE: MD: JE-510 grinding.
The good news is I've convinced my girlfriend that it's broken and we'll just have to buy a new deck. :) So your probably asking .. why bother fixing the JE-510? Well, I'd like to try and fix it first. Nah, buy the new deck first and try to fix the old one second. Re: MD: (OT, rant) Michael Jackson
This is hilarious!!! Does Michael Jackson NEED to protect himself!?!?! Sure, people will copy his CDs, but really, Jackson and his label will make more money than many small countries, even if no copy protection is implemented. They claim it is to protect artists, but in reality it is intended to ensure maximal profits for the labels and the biggest selling artists. The big selling artists are not the point. Sure nobody cares whether Michael Jackson is worth several billion or several billion and one; least of all, I suspect, him. However, it is not just the star who is involved with making a hit record. There are dozens of session musicians, graphics artists, recording and mastering engineers and assistants behind every record, all working on a shoestring living. I happen to be a personal friend of the trumpet player on the Beatles' Penny Lane, one of the biggest selling records by one of the biggest selling bands that the pop industry has known. Try to guess his royalties from that record. Millions, right? A penny a copy would have made hundreds of thousand in 30 years. Nope, lower. Thousands? no, still way too high. Surely it must be a few hundred? Nope - way off. His royalties from that record to date total 11 pounds. That's right, less than 20 bucks for millions of copies sold over 30 years. It's an insult and an absolute disgrace for one of the country's finest and most talented musicians (unquestionably more talented than any of the four) to be treated this way. He's in his sixties now, wanting to retire but unable to afford to. Thousands of extremely talented musicians the world over are in this position. Arguably this has more to do with contractual arrangements than copy protection, but it does emphasise that for those involved behind the headlines every record sale does indeed count, and every lost sale to a pirate hits a lot of people, not just the so-called star. Re: MD: copy protection question
I have heard that the soundtrack to 'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' has some sort of protection on it. I'm not sure how you would verify this though, as I don't know of a list that exists somewhere. - Original Message - From: macdef [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 4:12 PM Subject: Re: MD: copy protection question Matt Wall [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: if anyone know's of a non-country cd, and non-michael jackson cd that has this protection on it, please post the name of it i would like to do some testing with both MD and DAT digitally. thanks What, you don't like country or Michael? ;) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: MD: MD v DAT
I have a portable DAT and MD. I much prefer the MD due to editing capablities. You have to sit with your finger on the DAT's pause button if you want to edit out commercials while recording, you can not edit out unwanted material latter like you can with MD. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, I own a CDR deck, MD deck portable but the one thing I can't do with all this is record a continous 2 or 3 hr FM radio broadcast (and later one day from DAB). OK, my MD gear both have MDLP but I'm after quality rather than convenience. LP4 is rubbish and LP2 is very listenable, but as others have said, only really for personal/in car use. I'm therefore considering a DAT personal. (I can get an Aiwa HD-S200 for UKP150). I'd be interested in comparions of DAT with MD if anyone has experience. How does taping compare ? Editing is not really an issue. I'm after the ability to make continuous long recordings of 2 or 4 hr length. cheers Matt - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Dan Hergott, RCDD (519) 888-4567 EXT: 2454 MFCF Hardware Service MC-3017 University of Waterloo: LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT! MD: Sony PC-Link with a Mac?
I've had my Sony MZ-R70 for about six months, really like it. I've been recording Mp3's off of my Mac through the computers' analog sound-out jack. My MD came with the Sony PC Link - but when I first brought it home and tried it nothing happened. I assumed that it's one of those Mac non-compatibility issues and never looked into it further. Now I found this list and I was wondering if one of you experienced MiniDisc guru's know of a fix for me - Mac drivers? I realize this is SUCH a newbie question, but I can't find info elsewhere. Thanks in advance for your input. Eric - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: MD: Intro MZ-R700 and D vs. A recording
One of the things I'm psyched about is the non-analog recording ability brought by the Xitel dongle. I'm assuming, however, that the R700 has the ability to record in analog, as well, tho, correct? Is there any functional difference between digital and analog recording? Will, for example, the recorder not be able to put in track marks in analog mode? I believe the R700 is able to record in analog as well as digital, the same line out is probably used. A friend of mine has the R70 (the non-mdlp predecessor to the R700) and it can record in digital and analog. On the R70, when recording in analog, track marks are inserted wherever there is 2 seconds of silence, so they will usually be inserted between tracks (and occasionally *within* tracks - these track marks are easily erased of course), unless the CD is mixed dance music or something, in which case you may have problems - before I had a CD player with an optical out I found it best to monitor these recordings and insert the track marks manually while recording (leaving the CD player display in track time remaining mode helps a lot here!). I imagine the situation will be the same with the R700, but if you want to check perhaps consult the equipment browser or see if there is an R700 manual at www.minidisc.org. RE: MD: Auto MD
Sorry to reask this, but which auto MD radios have been the best? Anyone have the Sony C6500 or Sony C800REC ? Thanks for everyone's help. Jerry It's hard to say what is best when we don't know your priorities, but I can say I own the C6500X and absolutely *love* it. Things I like include: - Good sound IMO (this is always subjective of course), balanced trebles and mids - having 4 x 50 watts helps (previous Sony headunits were generally 4 x 35/40 w) - not for more volume - the extra power gives better sound at all volumes - decent (but not overblown) bass boost (2 levels) - reasonably logical controls - the central source button surrounded by the volume control and playstation-esche control pad works well. - the display (in red w/ white LEDs) looks awesome - supports the custom file function of my Sony CD changer - good FM tuner ability to title FM stations Things it lacks/things I don't like: - non-MDLP (although if/when I go MDLP an MDLP MD changer could always be hooked up) - the LED display is segmented (like a calculator display, hope this makes sense) rather than dot matrix, so although it displays MD titling info fine, it doesn't show lower case and stuff. - there is no option to have track titles continuously scroll. - the off button is impossibly small and inconspicuous - it's hard enough to find it when you're driving and you *know* where it is - how people who are in my car on occasion are ever going to find out how to turn the stereo off in a hurry is beyond me. However many of these features/misfeatures will be present on the C800REC, except that it has a dot matrix display. Of course, it's not really comparing apples and apples - the C800REC has record and editing functions and in NZ was twice the price of the C6500X. They're both of the same generation though. Hope this helps. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any specific questions about the C6500X and I'll try to answer them! Dont wanna be anal about it, but its line in, not line out, and yes, this is true Of course, apologies for the inaccuracy. Hopefully the meaning of my message was clear from its context. Now heres something, unless you have a VERY quiet analog section, it is unlikely to insert trackmarks, I've only ever been able to get my soundcard to do it, which for some reason is deadly quiet Interesting - my mate's R70 has had absolutely no problem here - and it's just used to record normal audio CDs and is simply connected to a cheesey CD/tape mini system with an even cheesier 3.5 miniplug-RCA interconnect. Perhaps this is a problem peculiar to recording from PCs? MD: problem with erasing the name bank without any disc
Hello! Recently I bought R900, my first experience with MD. And this is my (first :) problem: I can't get into "edit" menu and erase the name bank when no disk is present. I press L (MiniDisc turns on), find "edit" menu and press L again. Then message "BUSY" blinks for a while and then message "NO DISC" appears and blinks away. In manual is written (in English manual it is on the page 52): "You can also erase phrases when the recorder is empty." But with sequence of commands described I can't reach the goal. Could one of you flyboys give me some cover? 10x and Have A Nice Day! Martin =) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: Sharp Playback Problems
Hey, I've been having a problem with my Sharp MD-MT161. When I play back a disc I have recorded I often get places on the disc where playback seems to pause, sometimes for several seconds. It will then resume. I suppose it is like skipping but it happens at the same point on the disc every time. I was wondering if it was a problem with the discs (maxell) but I have heard a whisper that this problem has occurred with other Sharp units. Any ideas?
