MD: . is this a good mic
Hello- I've been looking at a mic that can plug into a portable MD recorder. This is what I've found so far. Does anyone have this? Are you happy with it? http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=sonecmds70pSVBName=214 - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: MD: OT: Name the effect
Can somebody tell me the name of the effect that was used in Kid Rock's ballad, Only god knows why on his voice? Its the flippy thingi that sounds really poppy and cheap. Sorry for my inability to be articulate but how exactly do you describe sound?!?!? If anybody thinks they can help I can send them a small audio clip to show exactly what I'm talking about. I didn't think it would be appropriate to send to the list though. THANKS! I think he probably used Auto-Tune for that. It's a fairly expensive computer program for the Mac (around $500) and it's used mainly to make all notes the same pitch in vocals. But if you abuse it, instead of using it, you can do what he did. You can also do some pretty neat tricks with the timestretch functions in sound forge and cool edit. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: MD: Field Recording (continued)
Hi, What is the least expensive binaural mic that you sell? And do you make your own mics? It kinda sounds as though you do. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: MD: Field Recording (continued)
=== = NB: Over 50% of this message is QUOTED, please = = be more selective when quoting text = === Why not try the Vivanco EM216? It is small, cheap and near-professional quality. Its lower frequency point is given as 20Hz (but no -dB specified). The only drawback is that the stereo imaging is restricted because of its fixed small size. It will work directly with MD recorders that have active power on the mic input, but also comes with a battery power unit if you want to maximize MD battery life. Any idea where we can buy this in the US? I did a yahoo search, but all sites selling it seem to be in the UK. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: MD: the best soundcard for MD? Opinions needed!
Hello List! What is in your opinion the best soundcard to record from through optical out onto MD? I mean sound quality first then other benefits. Thank s 4 your interest! I like my Zoltrix Nightingale Pro 6. I bought it for $60 including shipping and it comes with a really long optical cord. Digital/Optical in/out. The only problem it's got is that it can't track-mark automatically which I suspect is a problem all soundcards have. But I use winamp and downloaded the MD recording plugin that puts in a 3 second pause between tracks. Set up your playlist and hit record. Works perfectly. Keep in mind that price was a factor with me. I'm sure a card that costs 3 times as much will probably be better. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: . digital cd-rom to soundcard cable
Hello MD people, I've been trying to find a cable so I can feed audio from my CD-Rom to my new soundcard digitally. The PC came with the analog CD-Rom to soundcard cable, but no digital because the original sound output device didn't have digital out. I've gone to two CompUSA stores in the area and neither have the digital cable. This is not an optical cable. It's a small cable that goes from the back of the CD-Rom to a thing on the soundcard. It looks similar to the analog CD-Soundcard cable but it's smaller. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Any idea where I can order one? //future-shock/ http://www.wam.umd.edu/~payvand [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've always read that MP3 doesn't sound as good as the original, I'm no audiophile but I like to know the music I listen to is the best reproduction I can get on my system, so I'm not into MP3 for that reason. After years of riding sport motorcycles my ears probably couldn't tell if the timbre of the third cymbals was not shimmering like it shouldso I'm a sucker for marketing I am into free music but that's a different issue ;-) So I read that LP2 is better than MP3 so that's good but it isn't as good as the original. MP3 can sound good if you use a good encoder and encode at a high bitrate. i personally never encode at less than 192, and usually try to encode at 256. and i use a program written by this german dude that's dead good. i'd rather not even download a 128 bitrate MP3 because it sounds all metallic. LP is a good function sometimes. I don't record any of my music on the LP setting mainly because i don't have a portable MDLP player, but even if i did, i wouldn't because i'm just not that cheap. but i do use MDLP to record movie sound tracks just because i don't have to put in another disc half-way through. it sounds alright. it's not the format that matters every time. early CDs sounded crap even though the CD is like the ultimate or something. they just didn't master things right back then. If you have a good source to work with, your MD recording will sound good. Of course I wish MD didn't compress, but that's something I'm willing to live with. And let's not forget that there's a lot more to music that the playback format. like speakers, and amps and the cables you use to hook things up. all of those things matter. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: . is MDLP worth the wait?
hello- advice time. i'm looking for opinions mainly. if you had an MDLP home deck. and 2 non-MDLP players. and were in the market for a used portable recorder. would you wait until MDLP portable recorders became more widespread and buy a MDLP recorder, or would you just buy a used non-MDLP recorder now? I do use the MDLP feature on my home deck, but mainly only to record the audio from movies. paying for a new R900 is not an option right now, and i don't like what i'm hearing about them anyway. I would like to get my hands on a used portable MDLP recorder from sharp or aiwa however. so would you buy non-MDLP now, or wait a while for a good, used portable MDLP? - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

He's a DJ, and so has had to learn how to do all this. And he says more time on his hands than me so he does it as a side-business. Commercial houses are good if you're doing like 500 copies, but for 50-100, there are better ways. Email him and work something out. I know he'll do good work, and he'll cut you a good deal. He has MD, DAT, and burners. And the proper mastering software. His area is techno, but I think if you explain what kinda sound you want, he'll make you something nice: [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can tell him I refered you if you like. Re: MD: Dataplay Digital Format??
On Thu, 29 Mar 2001 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I was wondering how many others have heard of this new digital format that is scheduled to begin marketing later this year(www.dataplay.com)? I read an article today that indicated that it was going to involve a disc that kind of appears to be like a minidisc, but about the size of a quarter. The disc is supposed to be used in multiple applications(audio, video, ebooks, etc.)and suposedly holds 5 hours of "CD quality" sound on one disc. There are supposed to be blanks that are recordable, but one time only. several major players in the music industry are supposed to be backing this as a new format for pre-recorded music, also. It sounds like a cross between MP3 and MD. I don't know what the technology is that allows for this much data to be stored on the disc. I think they're using different color lasers along with compression. blue lasers have a shorter warelength, and as such, they can read sectors that are closer to each other than red lasers (which most cd/dvd players use). Blue lasers are more expensive than red and I think that's limited their use. My lover told me something about this exact thing a while back. I think I remember something about them having 500meg of space. Obviously, if this is successful, it is a threat to MD as an ongoing format. I'm concerned because, at least from what I've been able to ascertain, it will not have the flexibility in terms of editing and reuse that MDs have. I'm also wondering about sound quality. I don't think we need to worry. Obviously, other digital/optical formats are going to be out there as we move into the future, but MD has been around for too long. And MD is not one-time record, let's not forget that. Still, this new stuff is a cool thing. I have a feeling they'll make some kind of portable thing for kids with it. Toys, or maybe players targeted to the teen market. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On Tue, 27 Mar 2001, Chad Gombosi wrote: Hi there, has anybody tested the Elektor SCMS Stripper with DVDs ? Does it work ? In what way? DVDs don't use SCMS do they? I don't know if they use SCMS, but they use something. You can not copy DVDs onto most VHS recorders these days because they're protected. Of course, there are programs that disable copy protection on DVD (email me privately and i'll sort you out if you're into that) and so if you have a DVD drive in computer with a board that has rca video and audio outputs, you can copy DVD onto VHS. If you're tired of the bad dvd selection at your rental store, and don't want to buy every movie you want to watch, I highly recommend netflix.com. They have some really great concerts too which you can of course record onto minidisc. I record some movies (those that have good sounds in them) onto minidisc on the MDLP setting and use them for samples. Movies likes 13th warrior or U-571 have some really great samples in them and they come clean off of DVD. There are also programs that can "rip" dvd tracks, and yet other programs that can convert that ripped file to AVI, or VCD-spec mpeg1 for burning VCDs (which most DVD players can play). I've learned and used them. They work, but they are *very* slow. mainly because they are built by hackers around codecs that were originally built for other programs such as adobe premier. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

MD: . MP3toMD--my way
hello- this may have already been talked about here. or you may have your own method that works for you. but this is how i'm copying my mp3s to minidisc now, and i thought some of you might be interested. what you'll need: -a cd-writer -Nero 5--the cd writing program. earlier version may work, but i don't know. -a player capable of playing cd-rw. i just use our dvd player. most recent cd players can also play cd-rw specially the new portable phillips. gather up your mp3s. put them in a directory. launch nero. select the songs you want (you don't even need to convert to wave). in properties, select the "normalize" filter. use the peak level method, and set level at 95%. this will ensure that all mp3s have around the same loudness level, without clipping. burn to the cd-rw. now. i have not been able to digitally record to minidisc with cd-rw for some reason. cd-rs are no problem, but i've had to go to analog with this, but it's no problem. i run everything through a mixing board anyway to fatten up the sound a little. and since the original source are mp3s, you're not dealing with cd-quality audio anyway. set DT(S) (or it may be DS(T)) level on minidisc recorder to somewhere between -50 and -60. turn auto-tracking on. start cd, start minidisc. set it, and forget it. the minidisc will automatically track. you press a button only once, and don't have to hang around for the session. if there's more than one person listening to minidiscs, you can make multiple copies since you've got the cd-rw master. and you can erase the cd-rw and record on it again. and you get to avoid your noisy sound card as well. you can use programs other than nero, but they may not have the normalize function. you can normalize manually using sound forge or some such, but i think it's too much work. normalizing is not required, but it's a nice thing to have. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: . what's a good portable recorder
hello- i've come to the realization that although i have a portable player and home recorder, i'd like a portable recorder. i run a lot of interviews and studies and i'm tired of using those old tape recorder that sound so crap. so i was trying to see what y'all recommend. are there any major differences between the R70 and the R90? are the sharp recorders good? finally, do you think it's necessary to buy one from a store and buy the extended warranty? i'll be using the regular portable mostly (which has EW) so the portable recorder won't be used a lot. so i was thinking of just saving some money and buying one on ebay or u-bid.com i'd appreciate your advice. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: . remote for MDS-JE440
hello- i bought my recorder from best buy. it was a display model, and while it was in fine shape, and i bought the extended warranty, it did not have the remote control and manual. i know it's in that store somewhere, but only god knows where. does anyone know where i can get the remote? does sony sell them? I went to their site, but it's the most useless site i've ever seen for existing costumers. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
