I think all that's too long! Why not something shorter like [MDSALES
USA] or [USA MDSALES] instead?

2000-09-23 Thread Greg Conquest

Hi all,

I have an idea that may keep us all happy. If Peter and any other
merchants here could agree on some words to include in the subject
indicating sales material, then those of us who aren't interested can
filter out the ads, not Peter.

Just a preliminary suggestion, but how about:

Subject: MDsales {insert more text here, of course}

It would have to be a phrase that wouldn't be used in other inadvertent
postings. "MDsales" fits the bill and is short. I would just set my
filter to screen out any messages with this in the subject.

Anyone who violated the "agreement", if we can come to one, would
simply have *all* of their mail filtered.

What do you think?

How about [COMMERCIAL ADVERTISMENT] followed by what ever? (Have the

Excellent, but it needs to go a little farther: if the sale is restricted
geographically (like the buyitonline.com coupons), then the subject should
also have an indication of that. Then people interested only in products
that they are able to buy -- not an unreasonable position -- can tell when
a sale is world-wide, when it includes their country, or when it does not
include their country.

What about : [MDSALES USA ONLY] first in the subject ???

Please let me know...

I'm also a member of this community so I want to do things right too...

Personally, I prefer to receive some advertisement about Minidisc Offer
(even Cassette House and Music Mixer) than some Weird Message about Jim
Carrey, and any oter actors from different movie or TV Show !

When there is a movie, like Art Of War with Wesley Snipe where we see some
MD equipment, that's great to hear about it but what's the meaning to talk
about actor or about any other topic than MD in this discussion list ???

What do you think ???

Pierre.

Doesn't work because the majority of subscribers read the digest version
of the list, which can't filter individual messages.

Netscape, Outlook Express, Www.yahoo.com and a host of other mail
programs let you set up folders and filter mail into them so your MD
mail doesn't get confused with your regular InBox messages.

Ok, I feel that I'm a BIG Problem for some people from this list...

That was not my goal...

Of course, I advertise to sell more but to be honest with you when I find
out (after long hours of hunting on the web) some great $15 OFF coupons, I
prefer to spread it FAST to everyone because I feel that it's a great deal
for any USA resident !

So, this is my suggestion to please everyone and to don't harass people who
receive only the digest list by email...

I will simply put my special discounts and coupons within my signature at
the end of the message. I will keep it Simple ! Look by yourself with this
message and tell me what do you think about this !

Peter asked,

F What about : [MDSALES USA ONLY] first in the subject ???
F Please let me know...

It could be better. The brackets and the word "only" just waste space and
push the real subject out of view on our index screens, and the solid capital
letters are hard on our eyes. "MDsales US" without brackets (nor quotes) is
plenty, and I think we can agree on "MDsales NA" (for North America) when an
offer is good only for customers in Canada and the US or "MDsales EC" for
those in the European Community.

Larry commented,

S I'd add the word "ADVERTISEMENT:

I disagree very strongly. Peter's suggestion was already too long and al-
ready had too many capital letters in a row. With "MDsales" there to start,
"ADVERTISEMENT" is entirely redundant (besides being painful). If you want
to talk about the industry of selling MDs, separate "MD" and "sales" into
two words, or say "selling MDs" instead of "MDsales."

Albert responded,

T Unfortunately, that doesn't help those reading this list in digest mode...

It helps you a little: it lets you know to skip down to the next article
without taking the time or bother to read the one with the ad.

It would help digest readers even more if advertising posts were kept short,
with terse summaries and pointers to more information (on the web or by email
server) without detailed hype.

I'd bet money on it. I'm a mailing list administrator who had managed
fifty or sixty mailing lists, some with over 20,000 members, and on lists
like this, the majority of subscribers read the digest mode.

Netscape, Outlook Express, Www.yahoo.com and a host of other mail
programs let you set up folders and filter mail into them so your MD

Yes, but for digests, that means that your single digest message is
filtered into a different folder. That doesn't address the problem at hand.

It certainly does if they can figure out how to get out of digest mode.
If they use the above mailer programs, they should take advantage of
MODERN technology and set up folders and filters and change from digest
mode to individual messages. For most people, digest mode doesn't solve
anything and creates a lot of problems.
