i had the same problem. i got a variable voltage one installed a 5v

puts off some heat (i.e. wasted energy) but puts out a solid 5v the
battery charges perfectly.

Which is about 1/4 the price of replacing your MD recorder when the
el-cheapo power supply fries it.

I usually power my devices with Radio Shack filtered power supplies, and
never had any problems.

Then again, I haven't tried plugging in my MZ-R90 to one of those =)

Certain models of adaptor at Radio Shack include the price of one such
connector: that is, you get one connector for free when you buy the adaptor.
The sales personnel tend to forget that and charge for the connector, so be
careful.

Me too. Radio Shack's are not that cheap. I've seen them in Wal-Mart with a
dozen plugs for about $10.00.

Now at one time when ATT owned the phone companies in the US and you had to buy
your phones from them (actually I think for a long time you could only rent
them), their Princess phone came with a transformer (they were not as commonly
used as they are today), that looked like the case was solid epoxy.

There are advantages and disadvantages to those crappy wall warts. The
advantage is that if the power supply goes bad (but hopefully does not destroy
the unit) all you need is to replace it.

The disadvantages are obvious. I had a Toshiba notebook computer that used an
internal power supply. It never went bad (the screen died, but the notebook
still works with an external monitor).

They're still made to power and charge a specific category of portable
electronics. The Radio Shack adaptors may work. But I have also seen them
destroy expensive equipment. I have personally witnessed one such device
destroy a $1000 MP2100, in spite of the fact that its output voltage and
amperage exactly matched (according to the labels) the power required by
the MP.

I will continue to use and recomend what I know works in favor of what
could be catastrophically bad.

I either have to go to 6V or find an unregulated 4.5V adapter.

Shawn

This is what I wrote is answer to a previous list message:

_
My experience with AC adaptors for use with a Sharp MD is that it is
necessary to get the regulated type if you want to record to MD and/or
charge NiMH batteries. Unregulated types just dip too much on the variable
loads an MD poses, so choose one with a regulated 5V 700mA output (or
whatever your MD needs).

Not being able to find a low-cost regulated unit, I made one by fitting an
LM340T-5 regulator inside an unregulated 9V 700mA brick and changing the
power connector on the output lead. If you try this route, you need to make
sure you have a good thermal connection between the regulator and a heat
sink because it may have to dump several Watts. Also, the dc power connector
that Sharp use is not one of the common sizes.
__

As a postscript, you can usually find sizeable piles of unregulated AC
adaptors in second-hand shops (also car-boot sales in the UK). Rake through
them until you find a suitable one.

Unless of course, you happen to know a cheaper source! I know Parts
Express has one for $10, but with shipping and all it could cost more.

 Shawn

This seems to be a life long conflict for me. Whether to buy on line (formerly
over the phone) and pay shipping or buy locally and pay sales tax. Sometimes
it's no contest, even with tax and shipping, on line may still be much less.

But then there are the close calls. Sam's club usually has pretty good prices
on DVDs. The tax here is 6%. Sometimes you can find the title on line for
less, but when you add shipping, it is more.

What really burns my ass is when they charge shipping and handling.
Sometimes you purchase something so light that the shipping should be a dollars
or so, and I but they charge you $7.50 for shipping AND handling.

The have artificially deflated their prices only to make it up in handling
charges. I hate when Cnet.com gives you a price comparison. The only way to
find the real lowest price is to contact the company and find out if they charge
tax and what the shipping charge will be.

Same here, been using a Sony 4.5V car power adaptor for 722 for about a
year. It was from an older CD player that came with the car kit. Check to
see if you got one lying around or pick up a cheap one from radio shack they
dont have to be sony or sharp just the same ratings.

If you can't find one for a reasonable price, a multi voltage adapter rated at
500 mAh and assorted plugs. But Shawn, you know this, I'm sure. Am I missing
