I recently had something similar happen to me. I used to like Best Buy a lot, but dropping MD a lot and their completely ignorant salespeople is really starting to annoy me. Do your own research before you go. I was very disappointed to see they only carry 2 home units now. My MDS-JE510 lemoned out, and all I had to choose from was the -JE330 (a model with LESS features) and a CD/MD combo (NOT what I want). I ended up having to settle with some great JBL speakers, but I now have no MD deck at home. Why would they choose such a basic unit for their ONLY straight-MD deck? At least a 520 or 530 would be good, but no. (Or, even better, BOTH units!) Where can I get my pre-recs now, everybody? Any place in Houston, or do I have to go on-line? If so, where's a good, inexpensive place? /jcrd - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well I just check with my daughter and her friend was tested. I couldn't believe that he and his roommate were hired because I knew that they couldn't pass. But it turned out that the guy who hired them was kind of sketchy himself. They knew him from when they all worked at Circuit City. He was the manager there and was fired for pulling crap to make is sales numbers look better, etc. But he was get to work for. If he liked you, you could get open box stuff for a fraction of it's cost. Employees at CC are not supposed to even be able to buy open box specials. I've never been to a Best Buy. But I will visit this one when it opens in September. This place must be a piece of work. They hire the people fired from CC (all three of them were fired from CC and are now going to be managers at BB. What a joke. "Political issues aside, one of the fundamental problems with drug testing is that it just plain doesn't work. False results, both negative and positive, are pretty common. But it makes great PR. Re: MD: What's up with Best Buy !
"These are all stores that inspect potential employees' urine. " Are you stating a fact about BB or are you just assuming? I have a friend that was recently hired to be a manager in one of the departments of a BB that is soon to open in the King Of Prussia PA area. I'll have to check on that. One thing I can tell you about BB and Staples is that they DO NOT pay commission. The turnover at the local Staples is higher then I have ever seen in any store. If people last a month (including managers) that's good. But commission seems to have no effect on the quality of people that work in these stores. Circuit City pays on commission and seems to always get either stupid obnoxious sales people or nice people that are just total idiots. I can't tell you how many times I have either explained or corrected sales people about something at Circuit City. For example one of the "better" sales people once gave me this answer to the question, "Does this digital camera have a video output?" Answer, "No". At the very same time they were displaying images from one of them on a video monitor! There is dumb and dumber. I think that the problem is that most of the people that they hire think they know something. They are not like most of us on the list, either students or people with "real" jobs/professions who spend a lot of time reading about technology. These people learn about new products at sales meetings. These are meetings that people who work the evening shift are forced to come in for on a Sunday morning at 8 AM. They are pissed to be their in the first place. They pretending to be awake and leave there know even less then when they came in. The competition for many of the products (especially the "hot" items) is so great that there really is nothing left to pay qualified sales people. Take my future son in law. He is a recent college graduate. Very creative and very knowledgeable about computers and audio/video equipment. So what did CC do with him (he was still in college at the time). They put him in customer service. (I did I forget to mention that he hates dealing with people). Finally he had (he is not very assertive) it and told them that either they put him in sales or he is going to quit). The manager from the computer department told him that he wasn't qualified to work there because, and I quote, "You'll talk over the customers heads"!!! That's one for the books. He did get the sales job and did very well (because he really knew what he is talking about, he didn't have to BS) until he got a real job using his creativity. That's why I don't support most local business of this type. I have found that you usually get better service and lower prices in the net. Of course all a person needs to run a business on the net is a registered web site and a good source for their products. They don't need to invest a million dollars in a huge store that is much nicer then the houses the majority of us live in (not to mention the electric bills from having a billion watts of lights on all day. Peter Forest wrote: I was shocked !!! Really angry, but I stay calm and slowly I get out of this store !!! What the hell is that ??? Between '97-98 I think, Best Buy seemed really excited about MD. They had all new displays and endcaps with a video and everything. They brought the MD prerecs back out, and had a whole aisle of nothing but MD equipment. I think Best Buy was just using it as an evaluation for MD. However, I think their MD sales were disappointing. The local Best Buy even tried to sell demo units for cheap prices, and they'd still sit there for a long time. Now the MD aisle is now mostly CD recorders. Oh well. At least they gave MD another chance. Back in the early 90's Best Buy had a lot of MD stuff too, and it stagnated so they quit promoting MD, and then 5 years later they started back in with more MD stuff, but looks like it's stagnated again. MD: What's up with Best Buy !
Yesterday, during the afternoon I was with my friend at Best Buy in Daytona Beach (Florida). Since my friend is really interested in minidisc and I was far from my business (he was just passing by for a couple hours for business purposes). I try to find minidisc equipment and blanks and there was any... I was very amazed about all this and call a sales man from electronic department... The guy was a bit special, (to not say DUMB), and explain us that Minidisc was Out of Business, it was not a good thing for industry and nobody was buying this anymore... That why they remove it from their shelf. The guy also tell us that Minidisc was stealing CD industry... And that Minidisc will die soon... I was shocked !!! Really angry, but I stay calm and slowly I get out of this store !!! What the hell is that ??? If someone knows what's happening with Best Buy, please let me know... Peter. P.S. These guys know nothing about hi-fi except the profit margin on the fabled "Monster Cable". Ignore them. They DO sell Minidisc. Lots of Sony, a Sharp and some brand I'd never heard of (and ain't too likely to buy). The only had one bookshelf system which, at $450+, I wasn't too interested in, either. They didn't have any decks, at all. I didn't see any blank media, nor any prerecorded items, but I didn't look very hard, either. === = NB: Over 50% of this message is QUOTED, please = = be more selective when quoting text = === Well, I can't speak for what is happening at BestBuy now, but I used to work there, and their training and understanding of what is actually happening with any of the products they sell, is VERY limited. BestBuy hasn't been a huge promoter of MD, since it didn't take off like crazy in the States. There have been a number of rumors about them dropping their MD line due to lack of sales for a few years now. I don't think MD is stealing from the CD market, or that MD is going out of business (which corporation was that? *snicker*) Sounds like Best Buy is going out of brain! MD will be around for a while, so I wouldn't worry too much. -Jeffrey On Thu, 3 Aug 2000, Peter Forest wrote: Yesterday, during the afternoon I was with my friend at Best Buy in Daytona Beach (Florida). === = NB: Over 50% of this message is QUOTED, please = = be more selective when quoting text = === Peter, Best Buy does not pay their employees on commission. As far as I know net even their managers. So that is the quality of help that they get. Of course I've seen some pretty jerky people at Circuit City and they do pay on commission. The commissions vary by item not a straight percentage. They may only get $10 or so on a computer and yet they get $5 on a printer cable. That's because the printer cable costs CC about 4 or 5 dollars and they sell it for 25 or 30. I know about these things because my daughter's boyfriend worked there for a while. In a busy store you can make some decent money. But they also expect you to do other things (like clean up!) for your money.
