Have to share this with y'all. My German penpal, Paul, invited me to visit
him for two weeks in September this year. I can stay on his couch, so
airfare and spend money is all I need. Awesome. He has a Ford Escort :-(
but is gung ho on seeing not only the sights in Regensburg (where he lives)
and Bavaria, but is dedicated to get me to Sindelfingen, the musueum at
Untertuerkheim and the classic center in Fellbach.

 Wunderbar - can't wait!

The Pope will be there at the same time (he's Bavarian) and we are both
Catholic, so this should be quite an experience!

Will post pics of MB related stuff for y'all afterwards on my picture
blogger. And will keep in touch with the list while I'm gone.

There are four clips about an inch in from the corners front and back.
Using a VERY thin prying screw driver, either pop up from the center
and work to a side or pick a corner and pry up. May be a good thing to
use the steel part to glue the wood onto

As for the speaker cover, I changed to the wood trim dash and it was
missing a cover. I found one at PnP, but it is pretty weather worn
and

needs to have the cover heated and re-attached. Anybody have a good
idea how to make that happen? Thought a slow oven may do, but
probably

would just melt it all

That's a tough one. The Frankenheap's grille is hard black plastic,
and is just fine. But the usual one I see, and the one that is
in the Ebola Fishtank, is that glued-on vinyl/foam over metal thing.
I never have seen a good one of those.

One other option would be to make a nice wooden one. That would
be somewhat labor-intensive.

Temperature control on your oven would be critical.

I gave up and went to Benz Friendz for a relay. Seems both the hazard

Took a look at the footwells too. SOAKED, I mean really soaking wet

leave. Got the tiny plug in fan and some calcium choride to suck up
the vapor. It may dry out in May or July.

Lady across the street told me to go get some clear latex gack and gack

that to her buick. Not sure if I should use the large tube and do both

[MBZ] Tire Qualiy

Is it me or are tires not lasting as long as they did? I seem to remember
getting more mileage (and more even wear) from Michelin, Goodyear ect. all
season radial tires in general on many types of sedan and station wagon
vehicles in the mid to late 1980 when this country was on a quality push.

My mechanic said the same thing, tires over the last 5 years or so are not
lasting as long. Not just on the MB I have but he say in general across the
board. I have no scientific proof but... Your thoughts?

Got me then on red dot. The large thing is what Gump came with.
Finding that console at PnP is rare compared to the other and I would
have to assume from taking the parts out of the console that placement
down low for the larger relay may have interfered with the squirrel
cage for the AC. Then, again, the ash tray takes up the same depth at
that latitude.

Part is part, and I would be more inclined to really screw with things
if I had a warm dry place to work . Worked well in the summer when it
was not raining, but now, just no room, and I am not allowed to spray
paint inside either.

I may just have to seal old Gump up for winters and vacuum wrap her to
keep her dry.

Probably that, or the fuel grommet. My understanding of leak

Parts is parts, it's all just a matter of scale. And the will

Sometimes, of course, it has the last word anyway.

Not sure why some cars got the red dot and some had the other. May be
an AC thing. now that I think on it, the dots are found in the cars
with air at PnP, and found the larger ones on non AC. Also something
with the seat belt lamp being in the place the red dot lives.

Riddle me this: the Frankenheap has no AC, and has a red dot.
The Ebola Fishtank has AC, and has a red dot. I think it's just
age-related.

Someone, sorry can't recall who, raised a question of whether the word is
"preventive" or "preventative". Language is sort of my business so it got me

Put antifreeze in rather than water. That may assist you in determining if

I'd imagine that's just condensation, especially with how moist [and cold]

Like anything, keep an eye on the coolant consumption and oil consumption
for the first few runs before you really use it.

Anyone know how I get this "glued-on vinyl/foam over metal thing" loose from

The idea of making a wooden one appeals to me but I would need to get this
one off first to use as a sort of a pattern.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Genset

2006-01-06 Thread Jim Cathey

I started it at idle (removed throttle rod and put the spring on in
its place) and noticed quite a bit of water blowing out of the exhaust
manifold, complete with hissing and other scary behavior. Also drips
from the manifold nuts. I was a bit concerned, as I've no idea how
much initial condensation water is supposed to blow out of an engine
like this. I don't really have that much experience with big iron.
So I pulled off the exhaust manifold and fired it up again.

Hmm, #6 is blowing cold air, not warm. I'd wondered about that based
on the condition of the cylinder head when I pulled it. Also, the
engine didn't run as smoothly as it seems to me an I6 should have. I
pulled the #6 wire and there was no spark. I stopped the engine and
removed the wire (which is a replacement and unlike the others) and
found it to be open. I removed the distributor-end vampire clip and
that end seemed to be OK. I noticed that the other end was torn some
at the metal clip, it's possible that it was yanked on or something.
I pulled the clip off and jammed the ohmmeter probe into the neck: no
continuity. So I cut off about 1/2" and tried again. I had to cut
off a little over an inch in 1/4" bites before I got continuity.
Fortunately there was enough slack in the wire to still reach. With
the wire somewhat reassembled the engine ran much smoother.

After #6 was firing, it also blew warm air and water out of it like
the others. I let the engine idle long enough to warm up quite a bit,
and all the water stopped coming out. Just condensation? Seems like
it might be, and I _really_ hope so!

Thoughts from the experienced among us?

You are uninformed. Almost any MB with AMG wheels has wider wheels in back.
As one example, I have a set of 17" C36 wheels on my C320, 7.5 inches wide in
front and 8.5 inches wide in the rear. This has been a common optional fitment
for at least ten years.

Not sure why some cars got the red dot and some had the other. May be
an AC thing. now that I think on it, the dots are found in the cars

with the seat belt lamp being in the place the red dot lives.

Riddle me this: the Frankenheap has no AC, and has a red dot.

Two possibilities, new old stock that's already rotted OR poor quality
afermarket merchandise. I have heard from several mechanics that
aftermarket motor mounts are VERY unreliable. My own experience is that
aftermarket rubber parts (motor mounts, nitrogen spheres, window and
door seals, serp belt tensioner shock absorbers, etc) have NOT been
reliable.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Genset

2006-01-06 Thread Jim Cathey

I wonder if you would have been ok the second time had the gasket been
replaced. Another thought I had was that you were using straight water

I wonder too. An expensive, and time-consuming (special-order)
experiment. The $2 can of spray copper goo was more my speed
right now.

instead of 50/50 mix for coolant. Not sure if that would make a
difference

though.

I don't think so.

I'm betting you have the head removal/replacement down to a science
and can

probably do it in half or less time then the first attempt.

Yeah, it goes a lot quicker the more you do it!

Glad to hear you are making progressguessing your wife is as well.

She is. I'm just hoping that the lack of leaks is confirmed
with future activity. Now on to making a new water pump 'molded'
hose out of copper elbows, etc., antifreeze, and thence to taming
the 300V (!) output.

Yeah, I was poking fun at all of us, myself included. I try to keep the
"sunday car" nice and the other half tries to keep her TD nice(with some
help) With a fleet of aging MBs, I just can't keep up with all the little,
non-critical things.

Rubber decays with time, no matter if in use or not.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Genset

2006-01-06 Thread Dave Wakin

Jim,

I wonder if you would have been ok the second time had the gasket been
replaced. Another thought I had was that you were using straight water
instead of 50/50 mix for coolant. Not sure if that would make a difference
though.

I'm betting you have the head removal/replacement down to a science and can
probably do it in half or less time then the first attempt.

I can tear an Arctic Cat 2 stroke motor down, rebuild, and put back together
in about an hour or so now that I have done it a few times.

Glad to hear you are making progressguessing your wife is as well.

Cool. Was this the original gasket, or the new one you bought for
assembly?

The 'new' one. (Not so new anymore, going on the third time.)

2006-01-06 Thread l02turner

you wrote:<<.. I have a water leak inside the trunk wall [ behind the

My '78 240D leaks as well. I've searched and searched but cannot find the
source of the leak. The sunroof drains don't drain thru the trunk - they
drain to the area behind the rain gutters. I finally gave up (after years)
trying to find the source and dealt with the leak where it entered the
trunk. In my case, the water was entering thru a hole in the bottom of the
hat rack - to the left (drivers side) of the medicene box. I ended up
attaching a funnel to the underside of the hatrack where it was dripping and
ran a hose from the funnel to the drain in the trunk floor.

It may not be an elegant solution, but I have a dry trunk now - finally.
It's nice to be able to put stuff in the trunk without worrying about it
getting wet.

Good luck --

Sounds like your new window seal didn't. (Assuming the water's running
down the leading edge of the trunk.) Did you check the channel for
rust, etc. before reinstalling?

Taillights often leak, but that's a low-point puddle problem, maybe
not what you've got going on.

2006-01-06 Thread James Zavesky
Interesting to see what the motor and transmission number come back to which
VIN. The firewall and main dash/drivers VIN should match, not matching is a
bad thing. Could be that the car was tagged.

get an attorney

the goal is not to lose your monetary investment.

Park the car inside a locked garage AND remove the battery and a tire. This
is so the guys that did this originally won't come and get the car and
destroy the evidence leaving you to collect the insurance from your carrier.

Re: [MBZ] Spare 115 relays?

2006-01-06 Thread Jim Cathey

I am a lazy SOB, and have spent the past two days chasing a trunk leak
in the driving rain. For the life of me, i have no idea where the
water is getting in. About to park my behind in the trunk with a light
and see where it is getting in. New tail lights with gaskets and newer
trunk seal. Have not been able to find if the rear window is leaking.

Probably that, or the fuel grommet. My understanding of leak
faults is #1 taillights, #2 window. The rest lost in the noise.
But I could have those first two backwards!

A huge genset is not the same as a silly relay

Parts is parts, it's all just a matter of scale. And the will
to not take any backtalk from machinery, neither big nor small.

Actually I read in issue #10 that it was unusual to have the first cars, as
they do with the 280CE, as they were usually crash tested, but the 1st 280CE
survived and surfaced not that long ago, neat story behind it

Apparently they keep the first and last example of every model.
There are some nice and historic machines there.

Re: [MBZ] Will these wheels fit a 124?

2006-01-06 Thread Aaron Lam
Alex,

Many new MBs come with staggered (wider in the rear) wheels from the
factory. For those SLK wheels, the fronts will be a perfect fit but
the rears will probably rub if you have weight in the back seat or
trunk. A non 500E 124 can handle an 8" rear wheel just fine, but the
offset should be ET37 ideally.

That's a tough one. The Frankenheap's grille is hard black plastic,
and is just fine. But the usual one I see, and the one that is

I never have seen a good one of those.

One other option would be to make a nice wooden one. That would
be somewhat labor-intensive.

Temperature control on your oven would be critical.

Neat - looking elsewhere on their site, I found:

"The direction in which the engineers at Mercedes-Benz are taking
compression ignition engines is being shown in Geneva by the two
diesel-powered roadsters that boast record performance figures. A new
V8 engine generates 231 kW/315 hp in the Vision SL 400 CDI and
provides the eight-cylinder's crankshaft with an outstanding torque of
730 Nm. The SLK 320 CDI tri-turbo, meanwhile, can generate an
impressive 210 kW/286 hp and 630 Nm of torque from three litres of
displacement (70.3 kW and 211 Nm per litre of displacement)."

Wonder if any these will ever make it to this side of the pond?

That is why you enlist in the military, so you can get milspec (ask someone
who has worn a uniform what that means) stuff for free. Don't know where my
'78 Pinto is now, but the owner is driving around with after-market stuff
held down by milspec aircraft-quality nuts/bolts, and sports a very
expensive aircraft clock (went out of tolerances for aircraft use, which
means it loses a second every few centuries).

clear the water off of it. It just kind of smears it around. This is with
wipers of 3 different brands, including Bosch and Napa's teflon
blade. There is good spring tension pressing down on the blade.

Could there be some kind of chemical on my windshield making this
happen? Maybe an old dose of "RainX?" Maybe car wash liquid
wax? Is there any way to get it off?

There are 3 different causes of what you describe.

1. Something on the windshield (oily deposits or chemicals). Bon Ami
will take it off (don't use any other cleanser - they are too abrasive
and will scratch the glass). coca cola is supposed to work too (I've
never tried it myself).

2. The blade is old/damaged. A NEW/fresh Bosch or Mercedes blade will
solve that. Sometimes the blade can be cleaned, but that's usually a
short lived fix. A new blade EVERY year is usually required for reliable
cleaning.

3. The blade is not held against the windshield properly. This may be
because the stainless strip is installed incorrectly (the convex side
must point toward the windshield), the arm tension is insufficient, OR
the angle of the blade is incorrect (the arm may need to be bent to
properly set the blade angle so it's the same in BOTH directions of
travel).

I don't think oil cooler lines are nearly as robust and when they start to
leak, you better replace them (PITA) or you could end up with dead engine
syndrome in a heartbeat.

Mitch Haley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Werner Fehlauer wrote:

But the rubber pads in the transmission line clamps do not.
The steel lines for the tranny fluid are clamped to the engine.
If the line directly touches the clamps, it will eventually wear through.
Cut some pieces of fuel hose and pad those tranny lines with it.

Was it one of those cheap aftermarket deals or was it OE? If it was the
first it might not fit properly. You can usually get away with those
for doors, trunks etc, but not really for windshields. Rusty it the
