[MBZ] are 190s as generally bad as I've heard?

2006-01-21 Thread Tim C
Just curious - is the 190 series all that bad? I've had several mechanics
say this - avoid them entirely - but a friend picked one up (2.6 - I want to
say '90 or so, 160-180k miles OSLT) and hasn't really had any serious issues
in about the first year

Re: [MBZ] someone knows ... now fuel gauge vs. reserve light

2006-01-21 Thread Tim C
Huh, this appears to be saying that the reserve light and fuel gauge are
independent of each other? My gauge is equally (at least) funky in its
behavior - bounces around a lot, etc - but if the reserve light can be
trusted I see no reason to hurry fixing the gauge - so, is this the case, or
should I continue being conservative/paying close attention to the trip
odometer?

Selling because we need fewer cars.  White Mercedes 1980 300D.
$600.00. About 250K miles, runs great, good tires, Comes with CD
player/radio stereo, leather seats.  Some rought spots, including
damaged right rear corner, but nothing that prevents it from running
great.

I don't believe this particular bluebook value at $3100 to $4850
according to this website.

Re: [MBZ] #17 head and the death of a wayward #14

2006-01-21 Thread Zeitgeist
I popped the valves out of the #14 today, and more thoroughly
inspected the head gasket and block.

I found the exhaust seats were absolutely hammered, with a deep pit in
one that nearly ran the full width of the contact area. The valve
stems don't look too tapered and the valve heads are in remarkably
decent shape, considering the condition of the seats. I think they
can all be easily machined with enough margin to spare. There was
coolant in the #5 exhaust port, which is the cyl with the largest
visible combustion chamber crack.

The head gasket shows signs of either outright or preliminary failure
between several coolant jackets and the metal cylinder perimeter, as
well as between adjacent cyls.

The block appears to be in good condition, and I finally broke down
and purchased an industrial strength gasket scraper to clean up the
surfaces. The cyls still show cross hatch marks. I wish it was
possible to easily pop the oil pan off these engines, as I'd love to
do rings and rod bearings at this time.

I bet he ordered the extra key and the dealer decided to make extra
profit by taking the key out and saying that was his extra key he ordered.

Dave M. wrote:

The EPC always identifies the tumblers as "less key", but they do come

it's policy somehow (which I doubt), somebody goofed up, or the
dealership thinks they need to remove the key since the EPC said it
wasn't supposed to include one. You *did* buy this from a Mercedes

I confess not to have caught all of this thread, but something is fishy
here. Last time I ordered a lock cylinder for my 123, the dealer said
it would come from Maryland. (This was in West Virginia and that was the

"expedite" and I had it less than a week, maybe a couple days. This was

Very odd. I was a charter member of the R/E list (there were 10 of us

public and anyone else was asked to join) and at no time was discussion
confined or even largely about current cars. 90% of discussion was and

majority of the listers own) with most revolving around '70s and '80s cars.

Dealers are NOT required to sell parts at the suggested list price that
Mercedes publishes and many mark them up 25-100% above "list." They can
choose to sell them for whatever they can get for them. When there is NO
competition, some go crazy. When there were 5 Mercedes dealers within
the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, prices were quite respectable and you
could bargain. Now there is not a single Mercedes dealer in Allegheny

the 4 surrounding dealerships 20-40 miles outside the city and all of
them change list+ for parts.

Not a terribly important question, just wondering. I picture some dude

key too (obviously also coded to my VIN) I paid some $85 for this. It did
not come with a key. Just the cylinder was sent. I called him and asked
what's up - he basically said, his bad - that he told me the wrong thing,
and that in fact, the option to order the cylinder coded to VIN should not
come with a key. And the option to order a cyl. and a key together would not
yield a set coded to an existing VIN.

Fortunately, I had ordered an extra key (coded) (arrived separately and
several days earlier than cyl.). So all told, I have the cylinder
(supposedly coded to my VIN) and one key (also supposedly coded to my VIN).
I haven't confirmed that they work yet.

What and where is this "secret lock facility"? They told me that the cyl.
would come from Germany via Texas, and that it may take 6 - 8 weeks, but
they could not say for sure how long it'd take. It actually only took about
a coulpe weeks.

Anyone can get lock cylinders VIN matched from your local friendly
dealer.

Key should not come with VIN matched cylinder unless ordered. (they
will come from 2 different places, as MB must actually set-up the
lock cylinder at their secret lock facility).

A key will come with a lock cylinder that is not coded to the VIN.

Keys coded to the VIN can be purchased separately.

Re: [MBZ] W210.025/OM606.962 delivery valves (finished!) -- HOWTO

2006-01-21 Thread Marshall Booth
Nice writeup. One caution. Even if you torque the delivery valves
PERFECTLY, they might still distort the injection pump body. That will
cause noise (and damage if not promptly corrected) and result in
incorrect/uneven fuel delivery. The cure is to loosen and re-torque the
delivery valve for the cylinder that's misfiring. valve.

Even experienced pros using a torque wrench seem to distort the pump
maybe 1 out of 10 times (I'm told) and need to loosen and retighten the
valve. It may be that the earlier OM60x pumps are more touchy about this
than the later ones and I KNOW that the 6 cylinder versions are much
worse than the 4 or 5 cylinder pumps.

Yep, they centralized all of the parts warehouses when they merged Chrysler
parts warehouses with Mercedes parts warehouses.

An interesting piece of trivia - my Wife works at the Milwaukee depot, one
of three super warehouses run by Diamler-Chrysler. And generally speaking,
Mercedes parts cost less than Chrysler parts at the wholesale level.

When I left eBay (they bought my least favorite criminal organization,
Paypal) the system was that you could get your selling price commission
refunded due to non-paying bidder. If you needed to relist an unsold item,
you could relist it once for free. I suspect the guy you bought the car

country. It's really getting bad. I think someone may have even created

when I've listed things there, al lthe responses were from cashiers
check scammers and most were a form letter that didn't even mention the
item listed, it would just say something like "your item" or "your Product"
These clowns bid up cars on ebay all the time too. I bought a volvo
diesel from a guy last year that I knew, I thought he had sold the car
already, he had listed it on ebay, a scammer had the high bid, he listed
it again, a different scammer had the high bid, he finally gave up (
good for me, bad for him ) I got ahold of him 5 months later just to

generating 200-300 emails a day of stuff i had no interest in.

This list centers primarily around cars that are 20 years old + or - 5 or
10 There is a big difference between a 50-120K sticker price and a $500

I realize that there is some crossover and a few on this list have 90

Anyone can get lock cylinders VIN matched from your local friendly

Key should not come with VIN matched cylinder unless ordered. (they

A key will come with a lock cylinder that is not coded to the VIN.

Re: [MBZ] Premium Gas or Not?

2006-01-21 Thread Barry Stark
Don -
Just wanted to add that it is really a function of the compresson ratio of
the engine. If your compression ratio gets up towards 10:1 it really should
be running the good stuff. Most modern engines these days have knock sensors
or detonation sensors that retard the spark when it begins to detonate to
keep from damaging the engine. The late timing adversely affects performance
and usually fuel mileage too. You might want to try the premium and see if
running the cheaper price stuff is really worth it in the long run.
