I'm not going to start a Amsoil vs Mobil 1 thing or anything There is sufficient documentation to make me comfortable with running their products with extended drain intervals. In the past I have sent oil for analysis, many, many samples and change oil according to those results. I intend to run the Amsoil motor oil in all my MBs after I go through the Mobil 1 I have in stock. I will chose a vehicle and run it for 20,000mi and have the oil tested at 10,000 and 20,000 then change accordingly thereafter. I don't know fully how it all works as I just got off the phone with the guy but I'll get myself up to speed on the details. Dealer fee for a year is $30, preferred customer $20. Nope - the glow plug stays hot and ignites the fuel/air mixture. Not enough compression to ignite the fuel without that red hot wire. the 914 used a Type II transaxle I'm not a VW weenie but I can tell you that all 914s and all early 5-speed 911s and 912s used the Porsche 901 transmission with various gear ratios. I don't think you have ever seen a Porsche trans and if you had you might notice that the Porsche powertrain is mounted longitudinally. Isn't the VW engine transverse? As to a diesel 914, it's been done. I saw (and heard) one last November in Portland powered by a Jetta Turbodiesel. The owner was an eccentric from Boise who wasn't concerned about the fuel leak that had drenched the entire engine compartment and left a pool of diesel under itself. He didn't bother to change the gears and was going on about how economical it was. it looked slighly better than the $500 ebay 914 dog. RLE/former 914-6 owner, among others.

This is so very OT. Has anyone seen the new Brooks movie Looking for Comedy in the muslim World? Here's the very funny Stephen Hunter review from the Washington Post that completely deconstructs the movie, explaining its hilarity to a very selct FEW members of the audience (i.e., just the crtitic). 'Looking for Comedy': The Sound of One Fan Laughing By Stephen Hunter Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, January 20, 2006; Page C01 I sometimes think Albert Brooks would do better if he'd aim for a bigger audience: This movie seems to be aimed at an audience of one. Me. Maybe some others out there feel they get it, too, but it's such a slithery, incandescent thing he's selling, so fragile and gossamer, here one second and gone forever, beyond recall, the next. To describe it is almost to destroy it. javascript:void(popitup('http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/photo/postphotos/orb/style/2006-01-20/index.html?imgId=PH2006011903379imgUrl=/photo/2006/01/19/PH2006011903379.html',650,850)) [image: Albert Brooks tries his humor out on a tough house.]javascript:void(popitup('http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/photo/postphotos/orb/style/2006-01-20/index.html?imgId=PH2006011903379imgUrl=/photo/2006/01/19/PH2006011903379.html',650,850)) Albert Brooks tries his humor out on a tough house. The jokes in Looking for Comedy are particularly deficient; the structure (setup, sustenance, complication, delivery) isn't impressive. It's not very clever, it's not very charming, there are no boffo sight gags, nobody falls down goes boom. It self-terminates. In fact, the movie doesn't so much end as reach a stopping point and limp hurriedly off-screen, like a bad standup chased out by boo birds. But God, is it funny. Admittedly: an acquired taste. How many ways can I say that? What he is selling is something so tiny in its niche that it might not even have a name: It's not slapstick, satire, situation, repartee, quip, wit, gag or snapper. It's what can only be called the frailty of the comic ego. The funniest thing about Brooks is that he's not that funny. In fact, if he were funnier, he wouldn't be nearly as funny. He's for people like himself: cerebral, but less cerebral, really, than they think. People who are both fascinated and saddened by the vanities of show business, even while fractured by self-doubt. Yet a certain part of them is hungry for stardom at the lowest, basest, most vulgar level, even though they know such towering need of ego gratification is somehow wrong. It's for people living under just the faintest pall of self-delusion, who like to think that, of course, they get it, even as they're secretly terrified they don't and somebody will find out. It's for people with a profound sense of moral center who would probably pick up a ten-spot if they found it on the street. They want to be nice; they tell themselves they are nice, they deserve better, it's wrong that they don't get more, but they can't make themselves quite try hard enough and can't make themselves stop secretly hating themselves. Brooks sets himself up as almost this perfect schlemiel, playing a character named Albert Brooks who, despite his formidable comic reputation, isn't really doing that well, can't get much work, is eaten by doubts, may be over and isn't sure he deserves to do better and is really, anyway, too sensitive for the cutthroat realities of big-time showbiz. In the movie's first scene, he goes for another in the eternal round of usually feckless movie biz meetings that lubricate the turning of cogs and gears in Los Angeles, picturing Albert Brooks as melancholy but hopeful of getting That Big Part, in for an interview with the powerful director Penny Marshall and her people. Brooks the director uses Marshall as a symbol of the crushing realpolitik of showbiz, exactly as he used her brother Garry in Lost in America as the crushing realpolitik of Las

Re: [MBZ] someone knows ... now fuel gauge vs. reserve light
I see this on the pdf's you showed me. The 123 shows an empty value of ~45 ohms, the 126 gives ~82 ohms. Apparently I got the wrong unit, but don't remeber where I bought it, most probably TheBenzbin. The self-test circuitry is in the gauge cluster and really has nothing to do with the sender and gauge. On 1/22/06, Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hans Neureiter wrote: Correct by saying these functions are semi separate. My original gauge worked good, but the reserve light did not at all. Than I installed a new sending unit. Here the reserve light works, but the gauge is way off. Don't know why at this point (maybe it doesn't have that 4.7 ohm resistor in parallel like the old one has). I tinkered with the old sender that was coated with algae and found a way to clean it without braking the fine resistor wires. I plan on re-installing it and see what's up with the new one. Here is how it works: The float has two contacts on opposite ends of its circumference that slide up and down two resistor wires, making the combined length of the wire greater as it descends, thus increasing resistance in the gauge circuit. The reserve functions due to a brass disk at the bottom of the float that bridges two fixed contacts at the empty position, completing a separate circuit for the light. The reserve light has a second circuit that illuminates the lamp at a lower intensity when turning on the key and gets cancelled on start (self test). The system works only properly if these contacts and the wires are clean. On 1/21/06, Tim C [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Huh, this appears to be saying that the reserve light and fuel gauge are independent of each other? -- Hans. Not sure if you noticed, but the different senders (123/126/wagon/gasoline/diesel/early/late versions) have a little or a lot of different resistance values at full and at empty. I'm NOT sure just how many different assemblies are involved or but the clearly are some differences (it's clear that the plug for the T wagon sender includes a resistor to compensate for the different tank shape/size). In addition, early (manufactured before 9/82) senders do NOT have the resistor and diode that permit the reserve light to be illuminated (as a test) when the ignition key is on, but before the engine starts. All of the senders in my 201 sedans (except one) read very accurately (3/4 after 3.75 gallons are gone, 1/2 after 7.5 gallons are gone). The one oddball was a recycled sender (may have come from a gasoline car or may have been damaged in some way) and it drops MUCH faster. The reserve light comes on PRECISELY when it should (1.85 gallons remaining) suggesting that the resistance value of the sender is incorrect rather than the float being out of calibration. I have NOT measured the resistance as it's NOT critical - I can live with it reading a 15-20% pessimistically as long as the reserve light illuminates 50+ miles before I'm going to run out of fuel. [MBZ] 2 manny tranny cars firesale priced for quick sale 240D and 114 250
81 240D, red/parchment, was originally blue but they painted it red. Fair paint job, has a small area of rust in front of passenger side rear wheel well. Runs, drives fine, needs throwout bearing as the clutch squeels while pushed in. With very little work would be a very nice driver/beater/whatever. This was featured at the okieQ last year, luther drove it. $800 69 250, 6 cylinder gas, dual zenith carbs, white/red, drives seat has some wear, back of rear seat sun damaged. Needs shocks, tires, and carbs adjusted. Runs great after you get it started but hard to start cold unles you shoot a little gas down the cars. Clutch needs to be bleed. VERY VERY VERY little rust, just one small spot I believe below the drivers door, just a surface spot. Have red interior parts, everything needed to replaced worn parts. This is a really rare car, you never see a 4 speed, they are always auto $1000 This was the former Jaime car. He spent a ton of money on this car, looks like a ton of new gaskets, brake lines, hoses etc. Pertronic ignition. Need to move them quick, as in, need cash this week. I found none. I'm sure I bought it at Advance before but 2 different stores had no stock. Anyone aware of where it can be had? Its not an emergency but sometime soon I would like to change the fluid over to Mobil 1 as well as the filter. Same goes for PS and filter. I have but a couple of minor tasks to complete to bring my new 190D Euro up to speed as far as maintenance goes. So far, I have replaced all 4 tires with Bridgestones, replaced shocks and struts with Bilsteins, new Sway bar links (I believe I caused one to break by not supporting trailing arm when changing rear shocks), replaced master cylinder and all brake hoses(DOT 3 was used some time in the past and dissolved plenty of rubber), rebuilt all 4 calipers, new pads all around, Euro lights and clear corner lights, CHANGED ALL THE FUSES(Marshall), Mobil 1 15-50 and filter, serpentine belt, tensioner and shock, complete paint job, all new outside bulbs, new blower and AC switch knobs (big job),replaced articulating single wiper with a used set-up, valve cover gasket, rubber connectors for EGR pipe, fuel and air filters, all rubber fuel lines. Things left to do: Trans fluid and filter, PS fluid and filter, wiper motor seems weak(or I have another problem), replace Hirschmann antenna circuit board(it is a Euro and the circuit boards are different) the only parts I am lacking are M 1 trans fluid, the circuit board and possibly wiper motor. This is a nice example of a 201 190D 2.5na Euro w/62,000mi. As it sits, I have $2,600 into it including purchase price($1,200) and all above mentioned parts and repairs. I expect to spend less than $200 additional to cover repairs yet to be completed and get at least 10 years service out of it. Unless somebody really wants it for $5,000. Johnny B. Re: [MBZ] diesel beetle
,Yes, unless you count the diesel design study Porsche did for VW back in the early 50's. It was a diesel powered flat four in a split window Beetle. I think only two were made. And for good reason. Slow is probably not descriptive enough. RLE
Re: [MBZ] 914
I just got a 914 on trade-in, the car is in great shape. However I have no desires to drive the thing. The PO just spent a lot of money getting the body work redone and the engine rebuilt. He never got the carbs rebuilt and so the car runs like crap. The TDI would be interesting but I still would not drive the thing. How many cylinders? No four cylinder 914 had carbs. And, carbed 4s probably can't pass emissions. RLE

Re: [MBZ] old automatics
A fair number of early automatics were 2-speeds. The DeSoto had a 2-speed automatic, as did the Corvair. At the risk of being VanCleef-like, I will point out that Chev's Powerglide was a 2-speed and was used more recently than you might think. Seems like I recall that they were used even in Corvettes. The Chrysler auto was in fact a four-speed of sorts with a clutch. Move the lever up to what would be the 2nd gear position in a normal column shift, and a granny first and second were available. In the normal down position (3rd) a starting gear and high resided. The clutch wasn't used unless the lever needed to be moved, reverse for example. Other wise you'd start off in what was really third, lift and wait for a clonk into top, then proceed. The GM 2-speed buses (from my grade school days) started off like an old Dynaflow, revving like mad, and when a certain speed was attained, would violently shift into lockup cruising gear. I think they were all 2-cycles. RLE

[MBZ] high idle on 380SE with euro 5.0 solved
Well it was the throttle position sensor causing the high idle. The switch on the euro motor has a 2 prong flat plug, the car end has a 3 prong round. The wires for the engine side are brown and green, the wires for the car side are brown, green, and blue. I cut off the connector from the switch on the engine, cut the round connector off the switch that was on the old 380 motor, spliced the 2 brown and green wires together, spliced another wire to the remaining blue wire from the car side and ran it to a ground. Now it idles like it should. Drives just fine as well. Not sure if this is how its supposed to be on the US car or its just rigged, but it seems to work. -- Kaleb C. [MBZ] Will 240D Manual Tranny fit up to a 300D that came with an Automatic?
Could I remove the manual tranny from a 240D and put it into my 300d that currently sports an automatic? I bought the car for a pretty good price knowing it did not shift into high gear. When I got it home and put it up on our lift, I discovered a brand new rebuilt tranny complete with new or rebuilt torque converter. Since I'm not sure how to fix it, I thought about buying on older 240D with a manual tranny and performing the swap. Can this be done? Sincerely, -Scott
