Re: [MBZ] Blowed-up engines

2006-02-06 Thread Curt Raymond
I've never blowed up a car engine before but I did on a snowmobile once. I'd
been playing around with Amsoil's 100:1 2 stroke oil and ran out. I used some
regular oil at 50:1 (the sled a '71 Ski Doo Olympique 335, called for 20:1). I
got headed down the trail and it sounded like something was tapping the clutch
"ping, ting, ping". As you might guess I didn't get all that far... Welded the
rings to the piston and burned a groove down the side of the piston by the
exhaust port I still have the piston someplace, I should take a pic.

the buyer they will pull the listing. Might want to take that out before
they do.

A: Can they do that? I just hate it that you are selling and
old car and Ebay is taking 10% of the price off the bat, granted, that is
the venue you are using to sell, I will follow your advice.

The Bentley 124 owner's bible written by Stu Ritter is NOT a repair

are just plain WRONG). Best bet for the most information for the least
money is the factory CD (but they are NOT complete). Next best value are
the yearly Technical Data Manuals, but they stopped printing them in ~'93.

In 1998 while heading from Pgh to Wash. DC on the PA turnpike one cold,
dark, wet, January afternoon I heard somewhat abnormal engine noise from
my '84 190D 2.2 (automatic) and pulled over to check oil, vacuum pump,
tensioner, etc. and found them all tolerable. This was a car I'd owned
for about 5 years and had put about 75kmi on (mileage at the time was
180+kmi). The engine was running very well, but making a little more
noise than usual and the noise was NOT familiar. Wasn't lifer,
tensioner, combustion or vacuum pump noises but it WAS noisy. I
proceeded but within 5 minutes heard a BANG and saw a cloud of something
in the rear view mirror - and power was reduced (hard to make even 55
going up hill). As I pulled over again, idle oil pressure was very low
(under 0.5 bar - normal was 1+ bar).

Looking into the engine compartment (it was a VERY dark, rainy day) I
saw nothing obviously wrong although there was some oil on the back
bumper. I shut down the engine and checked the oil. It was several qt
lower than it had been previously so I added a qt. Started the engine
again and it don't sound at all well and after driving for maybe a mile
(oil pressure was slow to rise to 3 bar at running speeds) I gave up. I
had the car flat-bedded to my step-son's shop in VA where we determine
that a rod (#3) had come thru the side of the block right at and above
the front edge of the starter. There was a hole about the size of a fist
in the block. I purchased a used engine and while waiting for it to come
in and then for sufficient time for step-son to install it, he started
and drove the car into and out of the garage daily for more than a month
(sure did sound funny though).

The $1/gallon tax credit only applies to virgin Soy oil. I'd have to reread
it, but my guess is that it only applies to the stuff produced by U.S.
farmers.
I have not yet been received well by any investor groups when pitching
processes that depend on Waste Oil. They want projections based on stable
supplies, not what I can pick up on the weekends in the back of a truck.
Yea, I know there is a lot of it out there. But the people with the money
don't care. In a way that is good. It means the door will remain open for
the little guys to keep doing their thing.

[MBZ] 190D first day commuting!

2006-02-06 Thread Curt Raymond
Finally got my 190D all set (well mechanically) and inspected. Still need to
get an alignment, 2 ball joints and a tie rod end were replaced and it has a
little wierd feeling, the alignment is scheduled for tomorrow.
  Anyway, what a difference in a 190D 2.2l 5spd vs a 240D 4spd. This car is way
peppier and 5th gear which I thought was going to be a waste of time is quite
driveable. I need to downshift on the big hills but most of the time its no
worry. Its also fun to have a car that doesn't feel like its working itself to
death at 80mph. First tank of fuel yielded lousy mileage but that was still
working off the crap that had been in the tank and involved alot of idling and
short runs while being repaired. This week will be the real first test.
I still need to do some interior work, the driver's seat is squashed out
quite badly, I expect the seat frame is mangled. A local wrecking yard has a
set I need to check out. How hard is swapping them?
I also need to troubleshoot the heating system, the heat comes on great and
all the different buttons seem to work to direct the heat from defroster to
mostly up, up and down, mostly down, just the vents, but I can't get it off
full heat. I expect something was kludged inside. Some troubleshooting steps
would be great, Hammie has all manual heat so I've never had to deal with the
auto stuff before.

Hi Rhonald,
Your MB is 20 yrs old and those fuses should *all* be replaced every
10-15 years. They suffer from stress cracks that are almost impossible to
see. I chased a problem for 2 weeks and it turned out to be a fuse with a
hairline crack that would arc when I hit the brakes and then no more brake
lights! I learned the hard way that all fuses need to be replaced on a
10-15 year basis.

Either call Rusty and order a package of fuses or visit your local auto
store and look for VW fuses as they probably won't reference MB fuses. You
might get lucky and find some of the glass Buss replacement fuses but make
sure you buy the proper sizes - don't be tempted to use a larger than
specified fuse - or you could see smoke and flames coming from under the
dash! And that's *very* bad.

Take a look at the owners manual to see what sizes you need and you'll
be all set. Don't have a owners manual? A junk yard may have one if they
carry MBs. Else, try someone like Performance Products.

Good luck -

Biodiesel is completely supply constrained. Until that's fixed it's going to
be a fringe fuel. Once the Big Guys can count on quality and quantity,
you'll see it regularly at truck stops.

Then we'll see how closely the price tracks dino. There's no reason why it
should, except that it can.

The true cost of B99 at the pump, factoring in manufacturing costs,
transportation, fuel taxes and credits, is in the neighborhood of $1.75.
Anything over that is pure profit. If diesel goes to $4/gallon, the only
thing that will increase the price of B99 is the greediness of those
distributing it.

B100, by the way, comes in at $2.75. There's a $.99/gallon tax credit for
cutting it to B99. Your tax dollars at work.

I just discovered another engineering problem with the Ford trucks: the

because I have it on three trucks: a 1991 F-350, a 1992 F-250, and a
1995 F-250. Surely, by this time you would think Ford could have
corrected the problem. Definitely not a "better idea."

GM had a similar problem in the '70s and '80s: the high blower
connection would melt. They also never fixed it as far as I know.

You would think any jackleg mechanic (much less an engineer) would know
that running 25-30 amps through a small slip-on connection is inviting
disaster.

You would think. But the Germans aren't immune, either; VW did it for
years. Pretty much all VW models from the 80s are known for melting
blower switches -- they all used basically the same flawed part. The
problem was the switch was adequate (barely) when the blower was new and
the switch contacts were clean. As the blower aged, the current draw
went up. Add in resistance from a dirty switch contact and the switch
would melt down on high speed. The headlight switches and ignition
switches liked to burn up, too.

[MBZ] RIP: Peter A. Heimuller 02/03/2005

2006-02-06 Thread Mathieu J . Cama
For those that knew him, my father, Peter Heimuller, passed to the
Maker on Friday. He was diagnosed with cancer in May and fought hard to
beat it. In the last two weeks it became apparent that he was going to
lose the fight and was being called home. His passing was calm and
peaceful and occurred in the arms of his two sons.

For those that did not know him, Peter was a master mechanic, factory
trained in Germany at Mercedes-Benz in the late 1950s. He also received
factory Porsche and VW training. Peter was born in Kassel, Germany
during WW2. As a child, Peter participated in sporting events and was
awarded for his accomplishments by the town officials. Peter also
served on board a number of the proud passenger ships operated by the
German Navy including the SS Bremen. In 1961, he came to the USA with
less than $5 in his pocket and made a life for his family. Peter
founded a few automotive repair shops in the NYC metro-area over the
years where he performed his art. In the early 1970's Peter forayed
into drag racing and held a class record for close to a year. He ran in
hy-gas with a modified Porsche S90 motor in a '59 VW Beetle. Before
retiring in 1995 from the repair business, Peter had worked on some of
the most prestigious Mercedes-Benzes built (pre and post war). His last
business, Autobarn, specialized in repair and mechanical restoration of
these cars. His passing is a serious loss to all fellow car
enthusiasts.

However, Peter's greatest accomplishment was his dedication to his
family. His love was strong, and like most fathers, would do anything
for the welfare and happiness of the family. Peter's motto was work
hard and play hard. Both of these were the way of life at home or in
the shop.

It is an honor to have had as much time together as we did. So many
things we experienced and were taught, we would not have without Peter.
Integrity in life and work were paramount lessons instilled by him. As
Peter would say: "Do the right thing at the right time."

At this time, please celebrate in Peter's passing with a prayer and a
happy memory for those who knew him. He is free from the recent
suffering, and is now in the throws of those who have passed before
him, his parents, grand-parents, and his wife, my mother.

With a heavy heart,

Mathieu

You can buy a biodiesel pump by Webster pump from www.patriot-supply.com
Caal 1-866-321-4822 and ask for Steve Boyle

This eliminates the fire risk and pump damage that biodiesel can do to
normal pumps.

No relationship with company/person. Got the contact information from
altfuelfurnace on yahoo. A couple people over there are getting them, I may
be as well.

I have discovered a leak in my cooler line this past weekend. It is the one on
the passenger side. This looks pretty straight forward just removing the
brackets and connect the end tranny and the other to the radiator, am I missing
something tricky about this job ?

For the frequency of this I think it would absolutely qualify as a preventative
maintenance item, to replace the rubber portions that prevent wear on both
lines.

Hi Sunil,
Congratulations! I've been searching for one of those for a few
months - they're amazing cars IMHO - haven;t owned one but all the owners
I;ve known have raved about them! While I'm crazy about my W123 240D, I;d
like a newer diesel and a early 90s 300D 2.5 looks perfect! I hesitated
and missed out on Don Snook's 2.5 - maybe next time I'll react a little
quicker. Plus the distance and some other problems complicated the sale.

Let us know how it drives - I'm living my life vicariously thru you!

Subject: [MBZ] new addition

Just picked up my new-to-me 1992 300D. Drove it 100 miles back to my
house

without incident. A few questions:

1) For beginning maintenance issues - oil, air, ATF, fuel filters and
fluids; diff fluid. Glow plugs are good. What else am I forgetting?

2) Will 123 parts work in a 124? I'm talking about oil, fuel, or air
filters, as well as radiator hoses. Also, is it the same ATF? ...

3) I plugged in the block heater for 1.5 hours, and when I turned on the
car I didn't notice a difference in startup temperature. Temp outside was
24 F. Is this normal or abnormal?

What else am I forgetting?

Thanks!

[MBZ] best service manual for 124 cars

2006-02-06 Thread Sunil Hari
I'm looking for a service manual for my 124 car - what's the best one to
get, and where can you get it?

Is there something similar to the w123 skinnerbox page for w124 cars?

Lastly, how's the Bentley manual for these cars? Is it on the level of a
Haynes manual or an MB manual?

thanks again.

Re: [MBZ] OT - UK metric?

2006-02-06 Thread Potter, Tom E
I think so. I think they produce the small Lister engines.

The one I worked on was OLD. I think it may have been manufactured in
the '50s. It was a straight eight cylinder with cylinder bores about
8-inches in diameter. There were four of them driving generators on a
banana boat (literally). The ship hauled bananas from Central America to
the US. They had a fire in the engine room, and my company got the
contract from the insurance company to rebuild the Lister-Blackstones.
The ship was an MS (Motor Ship) and had a HUGE Sulzer diesel as main
propulsion. The Sulzer was about 60 feet long, about 35 feet high, and
turned 100 rpm at full throttle. Unfortunately, I did not get to work on
that one.

2006-02-06 Thread Potter, Tom E
You mean they HAVE engineers. If I were an engineer at GM, Ford or
Chrysler, I would not let anyone know just because of the shame.

I just discovered another engineering problem with the Ford trucks: the
headlight switch connector melts. I say this is an engineering problem
because I have it on three trucks: a 1991 F-350, a 1992 F-250, and a
1995 F-250. Surely, by this time you would think Ford could have
corrected the problem. Definitely not a "better idea."

GM had a similar problem in the '70s and '80s: the high blower
connection would melt. They also never fixed it as far as I know.

You would think any jackleg mechanic (much less an engineer) would know
that running 25-30 amps through a small slip-on connection is inviting
disaster.

Just my 2 cents.

A quick way of thinking of it is that the differential keeps the overall

turn twice as fast to keep the same average.

My 1.6L VW diesel nailed really loudly until I replaced the
injectors...it had that classic bad injector sound that's often mistaken
for a rod knock. With new injectors it became pretty quiet at warm
idle, with almost no clatter. That engine had pretty low compression,
though, I think, so it could be that's why it was quiet.

BUY A NEW BATTERY YOU NIMWIT!

That's the first time it had left me stranded away from home. Only $73

Re: [MBZ] Stinky sheep

2006-02-06 Thread Woodlandtaylors
Clay,

Hand wash them with a VERY mild soap in cold or warm water and hang them in
your garage dry slowly. Once the bulk on the water has drained take they
indoors to complete the process. Then brush any loose stuff off them and
they should look like new.

How can I get the mold spots and smell out of sheepskins? I got a set

How 'bout them Steelers?

I am only this excited because (1) I grew up about an hour south of Pitt,
down in the coal fields area of WV, (2) I remember the dynasty of the 70s,
and (3) my father, a die-hard Steeler fan, might not live to see another
Steelers Superbowl victory.

I concur.

Megan wants her Sunbird.
Debbie wants her Buick.
I am growing weary of trying to convince the family they should drive a
Benz.

Were I on Banned, I would elaborate further.

Actually, I'd NOT let Megan take the 240D to Cornell. Not quite reliable
enough in extremely cold weather and she won't have access to 120v AC for
block heater & battery charger.

Same deal with home heating systems. Riello USA, for instance, won't warrant
a home heating burner if biodiesel is used in it. And the parent company
sells a biodiesel migration kit for their burners in the UK and Europe. Doh.

Probably, a good steam cleaning or upholstery cleaner will do the trick

BUY A NEW BATTERY YOU NIMWIT!

I had to do this yesterday for my CD after I needed a jumpstart in town.
That's the first time it had left me stranded away from home. Only $73
for a 3/8 full/prorate warranty battery made by JC for Advance Auto
Parts.

The clear plastic tubing is a good idea - and since I won't be working
on it again till next weekend, I have time to run around and get some.
There is SO MUCH more room to work on everything while the engine is
out of the car!

Actually - you want her to be staying on campus - going to class, not
running all over the countryside (since there's nothing to do there)
-- a car that won't start in the cold could be a big plus!

My son is going to be taking our 240D - where ever he ends up goin to
school next year!
