Re: [MBZ] 220D Trunk floor project

2006-02-20 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
Trunk floor cost $180 plus $70 for shipping. Took over one month to come from
Germany. Apparently there were none in existence anywhere inthe world, hence
the wait. Did they stamp me a new one? I don't know? Anyway local dealership
wanted $240. Since I had already waited a month for it to arrive with the
initial KK order I just bought it from them. Besides they were extremely
polite and helpful. in addition to the gaping holes my trunk floor was/is also
very thinned out from rust. Almost entire trunk is rusty. From an investment
point of view, the time and labor that I'm putting into this car is not worth
it. I Love this car and would not like to see it junked.
Overall, its in pretty good shape rustwise except for the mentioned areas.
It resides in San Diego for 19 years and then it moved to Boston for another
nine. Boston was rough on its sheetmetal. It's now in D.C with a
significantly decreased salt exposure.
Its a tough little thing. It took a cross country trip and back in 2003 with
nothing but a glow plug burning out. Luckily, I had a spare. Those are not
easy to come by in the middle of nowhere. I bought four at a small Mercedes
shop in Reno, Nevada and always keep at least one in the car.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Filter on my 91 300D Turbo

2006-02-20 Thread Werner Fehlauer
Larry - as others have reported, there is some subtle difference in the main
fuel filter for the 123 and 124 models. They do look almost the same, but
Rusty has shipped different filters for the 124 602 engines from the 617
engines.

As for fuel quality and tank cleanliness, I have followed the advice of some
older hands from when I bought my first Diesel in '79: buy your fuel from
stations that sell lots of fuels, especially to truckers. You take the
biggest risks by getting fuel from small stations which often use old
storage tanks, which can collect lots of water and debris.

I usually fill up at major truck stops - the one nearby pumps about 130,000
gallons a week, so the fuel doesn't have much of an opportunity to get
contaminated. And I've never added any special snake oil to the vehicle's
fuel tank, and haven't ever had any problems in over 400,000 miles of Diesel
driving! In your case, I would just run the tank down until the reserve
light comes on and then fill it with fresh (known quality) fuel. I wouldn't
fool around with the tank and pickup unless you had some symptoms indicating
dirty fuel/lines, etc. The recent report we saw on this net, of a fuel
issue seems to be traceable to a fill of contaminated fuel.

Hi Werner
That's good to know about the pre-filters - actually, now that I think
about

it I believe the main fuel filter for the 240D and W124 300D is the same -
sure looked the same. This is going to make keeping an inventory of parts
around for both vehicles much easier!

This morning was the coldest of the season at 17F according to the t'stat
in

the instrument cluster - I decided to see how it would start - thinking
that's probably the best possible test to check the condition of the
engine,

GPs, fuel injectors, etc. To my delight, it glowed for about 10 seconds
then *instantly* fired up and settled to a even rpm - no bumping, shaking,
or uneven running - it acted the same as it did on the first day we looked
at it when it was in the 60s. ;-)

This car just keeps getting better better! At this rate I won;t have to
do any tinkering!

I am concerned with possibly having some algae growth in the tank. What's
the preferred product to kill the bugs? Or should I pull the fuel level
insert from the fuel tank and see if there's any black stuff in there?

BTW, does the anti-bacteria In-A-Can actually get rid of the black sludge
or

just stop it from growing? I fear I already know the answer - I should
visually check the tank and clean it -- but once its clean a can every 6
months will keep it clean - right?

I want to avoid the problem OK Don is having / just had when his car
started

running poorly when on a trip - even though we don't have a definitive
answer so far AFAIK.

Now, where can I go, where can I go... doesn;t really matter - I won't go
anywhere, I'll just drive around! ;-)

Larry - both my 126 and the 124 use a right angle connected pre-filter.
I

also used the same one on my daughter's 123. I suspect thee is not
difference in these!

As for the printed MB manuals, I have the climate control one, and 2
volumes
for the chassis. I don't have the engine nor the electrical diagrams,
which
would be nice, but I've gotten along without them for 15 years now.
Could

have used the electrical diagrams when I chased down the broken wires to
the
trunk lid that at first killed the trunk lights, then blew the fuse.
Ended
up removing the inside cover of the lid, and replacing a couple feet of
the
wire that gets flexed every time the trunk lid is raised. Put it all
back

together and now it all works again, hopefully for the next 15 years!;-))

I have no experience with the 124 CDs. I bought a CD for the 126 models
at full price. It was basically a *.pdf scan of the paper manuals;
therefore, the illustrations were less than perfect. I'm sure you can
find 124 CDs on e-Bay and elsewhere, but I have no idea about the
quality. I'm sure others on the list have experience with these CDs that
they can share.

I agree about the paper manuals. I like them best too. I guess it shows

Update: 8 pm Sat night.
I was able to find the troubleshooting procedure from skinnerbox. I
was not able to do the tests that require dwell meter or oscilloscope.
I did the voltage and ohmmeter tests. The trigger is at the flywheel.
I thought maybe I had loosened something when i took the starter out and
put it back. THe starter runs like a champ now. I love neverseize!

I have not yet solved the ignition problem. The coil is suspect. the
secondary coil resistance was high when i checked it the first time.
When i checked it again after a couple of hours, it is within spec. The
rotor is at the high resistance end of the spec. the cap center pin is
at the high end of the range also. Coil wire appears to be ok. (within
spec.) I checked one plug wire, and it is high ohm. Pulled one plug
plug so far it it looks like it has been in for 100k miles. All of this
in spec, but nearly out stuff seems to indicate poor running or rough
running, not going from running fine to ignition off as fast as turning
the switch. And that is what happened. Zoom to on the roadside with
no sparky, no go. It ran about 1.5 mile and the engine temp was
getting up to 80-85 c.

I am going to head out tomorrow and see if I can find some plug wire,
and plugs. I'd like to try a rotor if I could find one. I doubt I can
find a cap, rotor or coil withough waiting for an order from Rusty. I
am thinking a little emery cloth on the rotor might make a little
difference.

Tonight, after everything cooled down again, I have a decent spark
from the coil, but a weak spark at the end of the spark plug wire.
After it came back in off the tow truck it had no spark from the coil.
I think it might run when everything is cool.

As near as I can tell it needs plugs, wires, and very possibly a coil.

Re: [MBZ] bobby lickus?

2006-02-20 Thread Tom Hargrave
Some cars are going back to rear wheel drive. Several Chrysler products are
- like the 300 series.

Front wheel drive only took over because it saved about 300 pounds. It's not
as safe as rear wheel drive and you can't get great performance and handling
when you are steering with the same wheels you are driving with.

Ditto, they're like McDonald's versus good cooking. Thirteen (?) cars
laying around here, and not one FWD in the bunch. (Nor 4-cyl gasser,
nor V6.) Nothing but the best here! :-)

FWD's vaunted snow handling ability was informally put to the test
a few years ago by Click Clack, they compared an Acura to some
old land yacht on a nasty day. The land yacht sailed circles
around the Acura, and they attributed it all to weight. FWD lets
you make a lighter car but with more of its weight on the driven
wheels, approximating the traction a heavier car would have.
That's pretty much all it does for you.

Best snow traction I've ever had was in our 4WD pickup carrying
the camper. Was amazing. Weight, weight, weight.

Larry - the owner's manual, and the accompanying maintenance manual spell
out more details, but essentially the 300D 2.5 calls for oil/filter changes
at 5000 mile intervals, air and fuel filter changes at 15,000 miles, and
trans,.service at 30,000 miles. Coolant and brake fluid (brake fluid change
required within 6 months prior to taking to the track according to MBCA
rules)changes at 2 years or 30,000 miles, along with PS fluid and filters.
Front wheel bearing repacks as needed, usually a long time - I keep meaning

I could not disagree more. When I bought my 90 300D I was driving a
1996 Olds Cutlass Ciera. It was the most boring and unspectacular car
around. During a particularly nasty snow/ice storm. I still had the
Olds. I drove it to runs some errands because I didn't want to drive the
benz and get it all salty. My wife took the olds to work 30 minutes
later and I had to drive the benz. The 90 124 was awful in the snow.
It had new (all season) tires on it. It slid around and got stuck and
was miserable to drive. I put the snow tires on it that day and it
improved. But, given any amount of snow I would much rather drive the
oldsmobile than a rear wheel drive benz.

Bob,

You may want to get a small program called Winiso or Winimage. Either
one will allow you to extract the files from the ISO image.

Thinking about that now, why not just get Clone CD and do a burn from
image. Nice little program that you can get a demo of that will only
allow you to burn at 1X speed. (email me offlist and I can help you with

The appearance is sharp, good use of the MB steering wheel.

Do you really need 2 set's of links to each page? 1 at the steering wheel and
1 right below it? Couldn't that area of the page be used for your customer
quotes? (Marshal, Dan, Walt, etc)???

Instead of writing in first person, write it in third person. i.e. Rusty and
Gary have owned somewhere around 30 Mercedes Somewhere between implies
two sets of numbers used (30-40), a single number cannot be between.

I agree. I like first person best too for this application. It implies a
more personal touch. I realize we are talking about an automotive
website, but to add character you need a personal touch. The downside of
this is that some personalities conflict, so you run this risk. That is
the reason that most business communication is impersonal (and bland).
They try to avoid offending anyone.

My 2 cents.

You can get an angle grinder for $50-125 (depending on size, power,
etc.) that takes cutoff wheels, you can also put wire brushes and other
things on it. I have a Dewalt, a nice tool. Unless you get a big

awhile for it to recharge.

Re: [MBZ] FWD vs. RWD (was: bobby lickus?)

2006-02-20 Thread Dave M.
I'm with Click Clack. FWD came about because it was cheaper to
manufacture. It's not optimal for performance of any kind. The only
advantage in snow or slick roads is starting from a stop, due to the
higher percentage of weight on the front tires. Once in motion, you
have less control with FWD. On the flip side, while you have more
control with RWD, it takes a lot more driver skill to use the extra
abilities. It's easier to get into trouble with RWD, and once again if
you don't have the skills to control oversteer, you're in trouble,
probably more so than with FWD. Which all adds up to them claiming
FWD is better. A RWD car with some kitty litter in the trunk as
ballast, plus FOUR (not two) good snow tires, is a great setup and I'd
take that any day over FWD. One caveat... in either case, a
limited-slip differential is something I *really* like... open diffs
(which result in one spinning tire) are annoying!

Now, AWD is way better than either of the above, but there are
penalties in cost, maintenance, fuel economy, and weight. Too bad MB
never imported the 300D 4Matic over here (the 124.333, which was the
AWD version of the 124.133.)

Traction tires also make a HUGE difference in driveability on slick
roads... my 123 was nearly undriveable with so-called all season
Yokohamas, but with four Kumho KW-11 studless snows, it was
unstoppable. The best test would be to drive a FWD and RWD car back to
back, same day, same conditions, with the same snow tires for
comparison!

well - make sure the air compressor has enough capacity to power the grinder
(which actually has a thin cutting wheel - don't know why it's called a
grinder) else the tool will keep slowing down.

I have the die grinder with 3 wheels that are about 1/16 thick - they
really cut thru auto sheetmetal quickly. I also have an air powered chisel
set - which I was never impressed with.

Good luck - you;re entering territory that I have vowed to never enter

also really slow, and there's a lot of rusty trunk to

Re: [MBZ] FWD vs. RWD

2006-02-20 Thread Werner Fehlauer
In addition to making it cheaper to build cars, FWD also made the cars
lighter for the same interior volume by eliminating frame and support
structure for the traditional WD stuff. And it also made good business
sense for the manufacturers, since much of the usual front end collision
damage resulted in totaling the car (not much value in the part aft of the
dash) - and more opportunities to sell a new car!

Re: [MBZ] Mats, Mirror Owners Manual for my 91 300D

2006-02-20 Thread Werner Fehlauer
Larry - just be careful with the windshield mirror mount - you don't want to
break the glass in the event the glue is holding it on too well. A good
glass shop should be able to give you some hints.

As for the wood trim, Drew Tibcken (Heritage Woodwoks) is the expert as far
as I'm concerned. I also have a hairline crack on my '90 300D console wood
which he looked at while we were at Startech. Essentially, you have to take
out the ash tray and sequentially work back to remove the wood. If I recall
correctly, all the switches mount from the rear, not as easy to fool with as
a 126!

Stopped in at the dealership to check out their mats - bought a 4 pc set
of

rubber mats with circles on it for $72 and a Owners Manual for $10. Much
better than the $30-$40 most vendors are selling them for!

Hmm... maybe I should buy a bunch and start selling them? ;-)

Ordered some maintanence stuff from Rusty also - I ordered a new inside
rear
view mirror and now I'm wondering how to get the old one off? Does it
just
pop out of the ball socket swivel joint? And then pop the new one in?
The

old one is damaged - the plastic frams is broken with the night/day switch
missing.

Also ordered a new right hand mirror adjusting switch from Rusty - I
assume

I can pry it out and unplug it, then plug the new one it?

The wood on the console around the gear shift and window switches has a
small crack in it - how hard are they to change out? Haven't found one
yet - thought I;d try Potomac Recyclers. Unless someone has a spare
around

they'd like to sell?

It just has the 4 openings for the window switchs, the lockout and fader
for

the speakers -- I've never had much luck trying to repair them.

Larry,

I recently replaced the interior mirror on my new 190E 2.3 16V...

1. Hold securely as close to the top of the mirror post as
possible and JERK IT OUT down and to the rear.

2. Place one side of the new mirror, preferably the left side
sitting in the car, into the slot Getting one end of the spring
loaded whatsits into the receiver. I then placed the bottom
of a moderate sized hammer handle up next to the post and hit as
hard as I could w/the palm of my hand trying to deliver the force of
the blow up and to the left. It worked...

And I didn't break anything...

Hope this helps

If/when it does snow around here, I just try to stay home. I'm

[MBZ] 124 wagon Rear strut/shock

I want to rebuild the rear struts in the 88 TE. I know others have rebuilt the
123 hydraulic struts. Rusty can't find a kit to sell me for the 124 wagon
struts. Has anyone rebuilt 124 struts, or is the only choice to buy new ones?
I need a source for parts, and advice about any tools needed. Are they simply
o-rings, and I buy the boot and mouninting kit, then find orings locally?

Les, are you lurking out there? I think you have the answer?

Most parts stores that carry Wix filters will have the oil filter (and
Wix is very good). Probably 8 quarts if the 603 engine is a guide, at
least 6 anyway.

Should take 8 qts of AFT if you drain the torque converter, five or six
if you don't.

You can grab it and yank it out of its mounting the whole thing should
come off in one piece leaving a hole into which you pivot the new one
in. They are designed to break away if hit by an unrestrained occupant
in the event of a wreck. Very thoughtful of them to make the mirrors
that way. Way too many people were killed and seriously injured when
their noggin came in contact with the rear view mirrors and their
mounts.

I don't think so, I got a few posts stating cost as the major
contributing factor to the decision to manufacture them. I'll never buy
one unless its a great deal and I can profit from reselling it.
