Re: [MBZ] OT: New Outback
I have to say that growing up I paid little attention to the Japanese cars - I was into American muscle. But now, after living in the midwest where there remain almost no examples of 70's & 80's datsuns and hondas, etc., I am sort of pleased by the sight of those old cars. You see them in western U.S. (but, for some reason, not really in AZ - mostly in CA OR & WA) (in my limited experience, of course). The point is I have an appreciation for those atomic cockroaches. Re: [MBZ] Brake Lines
What I used to do, when all the FLAPS had was SAE thread brake line, was to buy the length of SAE stuff longer than I needed, the cut the flare off one end, and dump the nuts off. Then i;d take the nuts from the piece i was replacing and slide them on , in the right orientation, then bend and cut to length. The next step was to put a double flare on the cut end. It usually took me 2 or 3 tries to get a god one using the 1/16 inch double flare pin. The pin often breaks, so it is good to get at least 2 . I buy them from Snappy. Don't bother asking for the warranty replacement. The last time I had to wait until he ordered them and they come in. So that car was down a while. Re: [MBZ] Atomic cockroach
I recall at one time going to a Datsun dealer to look at new cars with this young lady I was friends with, as I was reputed "to know something about cars." She was immediately drawn to this thing, I think it was a B210, that looked like something regurgitated from a 1970s Korean design studio crusher on acid. The salesweasel tried to make some positive statements about it, but even that did not deter her from seriously considering buying one. I observed this event in an altered mental state, thoroughly dumbfounded at her sincere appreciation of it. In the end, even the good deal the salesweasel was willing to strike to rid his showroom of such an odious abomination did not overcome her impecunious state, so she ended up buying an old Firebird convertible, which was much more tolerable. --R > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I second this suggestion. This is one place that you want a good quality flare nut wrench. I had some cheapies (Whitney or Harbor ... don't recall) that would round off the nuts like an open-end wrench. Then I got a good US-made flare-nut wrench and had no problems since. Since you only need one or two sizes (not a whole set) even a great wrench is not so costly. Re: [MBZ] Brake Lines
Hi Fred, I bought 2 from Rusty - the 2 rear ones on my 91 300D are bad - the fittings are rounded off. Looks like someone used a pair of pliers on them. So, I spoke with Rusty and he ordered them - one was in stock the other came from Germany. I was surprised to learn one was no longer stocked and it required an order from Germany. I have them both now but have not yet installed either yet. I bought 3 tools to bend metal brake lines - they're pretty inexpensive and I wanted one that would not crimp the pipe. Don't know about yours, but the ones on my '91 W124 have a special green coating on them. The coating looks like Army green and seems very hard. Buying a straight piece ready made from FLAPs would work but it would not have the proper coatng so I dropped that idea. I am replacing my rear calipers also - again, the PO screwed the bleed valves up pretty badly - they were rounded off, likely the same friggin PO using the same friggin pair of pliers. A couple broke off. Anyway, a fellow lister (Thanks!!) sold me a set of calipers, pads and rotors for both the front & rear of my 91 300D. The front ones went on easily when I installed them last weekend. So, to answer your question - Rusty sells them but they are not in the Online Catalog, you'll need to send him a note or ask a online question. He'll probably get the brake line from MB but you get a discount not available from MB-USA. Then you will have to bend them. You should probably replace the rubber hoses at the same time. Re: [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134
It's a little more complex than that. Maybe this is the best way to explain what's going on: The amount of energy required to convert one pound of R134a from liquid to gas is about 80% of R12. In other words, running R134a in a R12 system is only 80% as efficient. Auto makers compensated for this by making R134a evaporators 20% larger, this is why the newer systems cool so well. Trying to move R134a refrigerant through a R12 system faster won't help. Also, head pressure is dependent on condenser temperature. Re: [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134
It's due to the thermodynamic properties of both refrigerants. Regardless of part numbers, R12 and R134a systems are designed to run on R12 and R134a, respectively. When you convert an R12 system to R134a, it is simply not as efficient at cooling due to the differences in thermodynamic properties. Even if the evaporator and condenser have the same part number, there are other elements in the system that are different. For the area of Maine where my farm is their image is high rez but very very old. Its hard to know for sure but I'd say pre-'01 anyway. Around my parent's house its interesting because the hybrid overlay shows streets that don't exist in the image. They also have considerably less detail than GoogleMaps at least in my Parent's area. The GoogleMaps image of my parents house was taken in November '04 the week of Veterans day, I can tell because my pickup is in the picture parked on my parent's lawn. For where I live they have birds eye view available which is pretty cool. You can just almost see my house. The regular image of my house is pretty new, not more than say 3 years old but not newer than a year. -Curt Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2007 16:00:48 -0400 From: "Scott Ritchey" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT Do Google Earth pictures get updated? The Outbacks seem to be very popular among the higher education crowd for some reason. The university that I attend and work at has an inordinate (to me) number of them in our College of Education parking lot. Total costs for parts is $120 or so, but well worth it. The cause of "what sounded like injector knock (but what) appears to have been the sticking pivot bearing clonking away," more often results from failure of the tensioner shock bushings. I've had perhaps 6-7 shocks on OM60x engines go bad vs one sticking pivot bearing. Once the arm cocks all bets are off and it MUST be replaced. I've had no trouble using a slightly modified Auto Zone 12 mm 1/2" hex and never needed to remove the fan clutch (or the fan). Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) [MBZ] OT: New Outback
With 3 cars, all over 20 years old, we decided to buy a new car to have at least one under 200K miles and under warranty. My wife despises SUVs and really wanted another station wagon. After long study, we just bought a Subaru Outback today. It's a bit small but it reminds me of vintage Mercedes in many ways. For one thing, all the tech data is online for nominal cost and they seem to track your service history and provide servive bulletins (online). Maybe all brands do this now, but somehow I doubt it. If anything really remarkable occurs, I'll report. Google gets imagery from a number of different sources, mostly commercial ones (which they have to pay for.) As a result, they might not use the highest resolution imagery available for a given area, depending on who the source is. Much of the imagery used to be government low resolution, which is the greenish-looking out-of focus stuff. However, they are in the process of updating a lot of their imagery from commercial sources, like Europa and TerraMetrics. But - they have to pay for it.. If you scroll across the globe, you'll see the credits for the supplier of the imagery on your screen at the bottom. When you're overlapping, you'll see both. You can get the tube at the auto parts store, and the fittings (make sure you put them on before you do the flare!) and the flaring and bending tools, which aren't much money (or the auto parts store might let you borrow them). It is not hard to do if you just don't bend too far or too fast. Re: [MBZ] Brake Lines
IIRC, when you order a hard brake line from MB, it comes unbent. At least ones for older cars do. I think I had to replace a couple of lines on a 114 one time, and they came straight. There are cheap hand held tubing benders that are pretty easy to use. Buy one and practice on a scrap piece. Just remember - like bending conduit, you're better off getting close and then tweakig it than going for the full bend out of the gate. Dan The fish are biting. [MBZ] OM 603 lower belt tensioner pivots
Just a note to those with high milage 603s -- the lower pivot can cause all sorts of havoc long before it goes atilt and starts the belt scrubbing. My brother and I replaced both of them (and get the roller, too!) on our cars, mine because the belt was groaning and whistling due to a tilted pivot and his because he had excessive belt noise, mostly squealing. Not a bad job, although we ended up making a tool for the 12mm sockethead bolt -- very hard to find a 12 mm hex driver in 3/8 drive for some reason (although Snap-On has on with a 1/4" drive for some reason) and the 1/2" drive won't fit unless you remove the fan clutch, which is a real PITA on the W124. Take the roller off, remove the shock upper mount, and remove the bolt, and you will very likely find a bad bearing in the pivot. Mine was rough, Sam's was acting like a ratchet under load, only turning one way, very rough. My roller is still bad, but the engine is MUCH quieter now -- what sounded like injector knock appears to have been the sticking pivot bearing clonking away. Sam's is much better, although he still has too much shake at idle, probably a timing issue that only the local dealer can address at the moment. He also had the belt routed wrong, which doesn't help much for squeal. He'd pulled the loop for the tensioner roller from between the alternator and the fan pulley instead of between the alternator and crank -- wondered why it was so easy for him as that job is a pain on the W124 with the fan on. Both cars have more than 200,000 miles, both eariler engines for what that's worth. Total costs for parts is $120 or so, but well worth it. I got a great night view of our house and you could see the heat coming off the engine on my wife's car...problem is, she'd been out of town all day and the car wasn't there, a little more searching the area showed two giant churches that had been built down the road about 2 years earlier, were dirt lots. -Robert Zoltan Finks wrote: > So you can stalk your old vehicle using google earth - cool. > > Actually I have wondered something about Google Earth: How often are > the pictures updated - or are they updated at all? > > I ask because I have thought the same thing - you can sort of keep > tabs on things if the pictures are updated often enough. > > This way, I suppose, if one's ex-girlfriend was fat enough, you could > even stalk her. > > Brian > > On 7/14/07, Zach <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> Gave it away... [MBZ] OT Do Google Earth pictures get updated?
So you can stalk your old vehicle using google earth - cool. Actually I have wondered something about Google Earth: How often are the pictures updated - or are they updated at all? I ask because I have thought the same thing - you can sort of keep tabs on things if the pictures are updated often enough. This way, I suppose, if one's ex-girlfriend was fat enough, you could even stalk her. Brian On 7/14/07, Zach <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Gave it away... I expect the part numbers are now the same because the original parts were replaced by newer parts (in the early/mid '90s) and the old parts are no longer stocked. Just as you can no longer buy 1 or 1.2 bad radiator caps but only 1.4 bar caps that are now are supplied for all cars no matter what they came with originally. Re: [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134
I looked up the molecular weight of both: R-12=121, R-134a=102. It would seem to me that if you used a pump pulley small enough to increase the pumps output 20%, there should be some improvement. At the same time if you could change the opening pressure of the expansion valve to account for the decreased density of R-134a, that should also improve the efficiency of the system. Does this make any sense? [MBZ] Return of the greater Boston crack smokers
After a hiatus of at least a couple weeks the great crack smokers of greater Boston are back. I've seen all these cars before, some for many months. Its amazing people don't get the idea. http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/car/373589789.html $4975 and he can't bother to make all the windows work. http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/373639594.html I love this color combo, its what I had on my wagon but $3600 for a 240D auto? Really now... http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/372820878.html horribly ugly American iron. If it were running I might buy it for the engine, but $700 for a car that doesn't run? http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/372466065.html Ahh Vlad. This one has been for sale for at least a year now. He does seem to indicate it runs now but he's using the same stupid pictures from last year. http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/371657340.html More horrible American iron, could he be less descriptive? http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/car/371458609.html $4750 for an '85 300D it better be perfect but why do people not give any details? http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/371290291.html I'm tempted to look at a diesel Cherokee but a v6 GMC diesel, thats gotta be the 4.3 which IIRC is 85hp... http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/371284319.html This is my favorite I'm sure everybody is dying for a diesel Trooper with a rusted frame. Actually theres a gasser here in town that has a solid frame but rusty body for $700... I'd pay $2950 if it wasn't a basketcase... Re: [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134
Kaleb, R134a has about 20% less thermal mass than R12 and R134a moves 20% less heat. All of the auto manufacturers made up the difference by upsizing the units. R12 sized evaporators are about 20% too small for R134a. The factory R134c systems have evaporators that are sized correctly for R134a. There is no "magic bullet" fix for this issue but you can help some by under charging the system & forcing the evaporator to run colder than it normally would. But this causes icing. Re: [MBZ] tires, again
I betcha it is. My Dad's favorite part about the Jeep Cherokee they used to own was the long lasting car tires it had. I think they were 60,000 mile tires and that thing was absolutely helpless in snow and ice even in 4wd. I'd rather have my 190D with the cheap Contis... Re: [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134
I have no idea. The epc just lists the part number. Usually when its changed it will say xxx part number, replaced by xxx part number etc. This doesnt say that but who knows. --- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134
really, I hadnt thought of that actually. In the past, I have used the kit and just removed the R12 (well, there was usually nothign in the system) and recharged with the 134 in the conversion kit. Never had a problem and it usually worked pretty good, but not as good as freeze you out factory 134. Next time I do a conversion Im thinking I should change out the drier, maybe pull the compressor and drain the oil out of that, switch the expansion valve then recharge etc. Anything else? --- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] 126 wheels
They should fit any 126, if you have the right bolts. they are off of an 87 SDL and a 420SEL, but I don't know what year. I also have a mint condition Bundt from the 85 280SEL and 2 other useable Bundts from it for 126. [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134
OK, so my 91 300D has R12 from the factory, my 92 300D has 134 from the factory. The R12 blow ice cold. The r134 stock system also blow ice cold. The 134 stock system in my 94 E420 also blows ice cold. Got me to thinking, how did the factory get 134 to blow ice cold, but if you convert r12 to 134, it doesnt blow as cold. So I thought the evaporator and condensor must be different. Check the EPC and both are exactly the same part number. Strange. Only difference is the expansion valve. I have coverted cars before and used the 134 expansion valve and it still didnt seem to cool as good as these factory 124's with 134. Anybody got any idea why the factory got 134 to cool great in a 124 but if you convert it after the fact it does not? -- Kaleb C. Could be as simple as the Schrader valve insert coming loose a bit. > Or should I vacuum the whole system, replace the receiver/dryer, and > refill with hydrocarbons (for test purposes!) a la Jim C.? You know what I think! But I've never replaced a drier when using HC's. I put them under a heat lamp and in vacuum overnight to 'recharge' them a bit. Dunno if/how well it works, but I don't see how it can hurt. I remove the R134a fittings on mine, my R12 gauge set is of much higher quality, and my vacuum pump only has the old-style fittings on it. -- Jim (C.) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
