Re: [MBZ] Audio software for OS X (was: vista / Final Cut Pro)

2007-07-18 Thread Luther
I have 100s of hours of experience with both Cool Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition)
and Sound Forge. Still have original CD's of both that I still install anytime
that I need audio editing. Both are quality programs that do most anything the
average audiophile would need. I mostly used them for
recording/editing/production of over 50 live concerts and several studio
recorded CDs during college.

As already said, you must have a good analog/digital converter to make the
highest quality recording. If you have ears like mine, you'll be spending
$500+. Try http://www.echoaudio.com. I have used several of their older cards.

Ok, after a bit of browsing and drooling, it seems the AudioFire2 and 4 are
priced under that $500 tag I said eariler. Retailing at $199 and $299 with
Tracktion bundled, that is a fairly good deal to get started in home pc/mac
recording. I've just finished downloading the demo, and will report back about
it's quality and features.

What Dan said.

Keep in mind that you will almost certainly need a preamp for the
turntable. It will be putting out mic-level signal that needs massive
EQ to work correctly. A stereo reciever with a "phono" input will do
this. If you don't have one of those already, there are some
stand-alone phono pre-amps.

Using the analog line input on the Mac will probably work. Sometimes
there will be a buzz caused by the power difference between the
computer and the turntable/preamp/receiver. Audio transformers are one
way to fix this. Or, get an external audio-USB interface. Roland,
Griffin, and M-Audio are a few folks that make such devices. Prices
start at about $40 US for a Griffin iMic. I believe you can spend more
than $5,000 US for a studio-grade multi-track unit.

Audacity is an audio editing program that is open-source and
cost-free. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc. It can
record, but it's strength is cutting, trimming, effects, etc.

A simple recorder is "Audio Recorder"

Sounds like our trip last January heading east on I-40 through eastern

Re: [MBZ] 300e fuel issues. . ??

2007-07-18 Thread Hendrik Riessen
To save yourself a lot of grief and frustration you are best to take it to a
good mechanic who has the tools to test your machine.
The O2 sensor can be tested, as well as fuel pressure and just about
everything else. This saves you time and money in the long run.
Just recently on the Ozbenz forum there was a fella who had trouble with his
180E which turned out to be broken wiring due to clumsy mechanics. Something
like that can only be found with experience.
We could sit here for weeks guessing and you could spend a lot of money
replacing components, which may well not require replacment.
I had stalling issues with my 190E which turned out to be a broken throttle
return spring, thus not allowing the fuel cut off switch to activate, thus
the system did not know that the foot is off the throttle and the system has
to go into idle mode.
You may have a dodgy RPM sensor and numerous other things could be your
problem. Also we should not automatically assume that fuel is the problem,
if you have ignition problems we could fully rebuild the fuel system and
still have problems. A dodgy ignition system does feel very similar to fuel
starvation symptons, loss of power, stalling, etc.
So you can see that it is a very complex system that when working properly
is a joy but when the gremilns bite, they bite hard.

[MBZ] 380 Ignition module

2007-07-18 Thread Loren Faeth
Kaleb,

What do I owe you for the 380SL ignition module? DO you want to
trade for a couple of 125 wheels and freight and $7?

On the SDL, I need to figure out what is going to happen with it
pretty soon. Did you plan to sell it whole, or part it out? If you
were going to part it out, then I might want to keep a few things off
it. It is taking up garage space.

Do you have a trans for a 87 124 300D? or a trans and driveshaft?

Wanna buy my 300D and I'll buy your 300D 2.5 on ebay? It runs good,
and I have been fixing up a lot of things. The trans has started
leaking fluid at the front. I am guessing the front seal. It IS
smoke silver and Burgundy! The driver's door is dinged, and there is
a ding below the trunk lid. Front seat covers were cracked, but I
spent big bucks for new sheepskins for the front.

I'll observe the operating temp more closely, but I believe it is at the
normal temp when it happens. . The only other think I've observed. This
actually happens intermittently, when coming to a stop it occasionally
'coughs' briefly like it's not getting fuel. I haven't observed anything
that would lead me to a pattern here. Although in the three weeks since I
purchased it this whole issue has worsened. The morning issue has been
going on the last 5 days, but the overall coughing has been happening since
I bought it.

Thanks Dan.

The leather car is garaged and most always out of the sun, so it's pretty
much just maintaining it at it's current level. However, since the 300E
came along, the Benz bug has really bit, so maybe there is an older car in
the future for me that will require such a product to bring back ages
leather. I'll be sure to tuck this message away. :-)

Re: [MBZ] - tank-on-empty - Number of Miles on Reserve - OZ

2007-07-18 Thread LWB250
Lucky dog. I live for the day I can go back to Oz.

Used to visit Sydney, Brisbane and Perth annually.
Occasionally a quick jaunt to Melbourne and Hobart,
and a little time in the outback as well, as my rep
there had relatives at a sheep station.

Lots of fun.

Re: [MBZ] 300e fuel issues. . ??

2007-07-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
There is a control pressure actuator attached to the side of the fuel
distributor. A steel reed inside oscillates up and down, controlled by the
computer. Feedback from the oxygen sensor modifies the reed duty cycle. The
duty cycle of the oscillation determines the control pressure to the bottom
of the fuel distributor because the duty cycle changes the amount of fuel
that's allowed to pass through. The control pressure determines the fuel
mixture. If this reed fails, as it did in one of my 300E's (twice, both
times cracked), strange things happen because the system is no longer
stable. It can stick open, stick closed or just not oscillate.

If your fuel pressure is correct then I'd suspect this part.

And Mitch is correct, the system does flow a lot of fuel. They do this for 2
reasons. The first reason is that they actually use hydraulic pressure
generated by the fuel flow, plus restriction (a pressure regulator), to
control the system (mentioned above) and to do this, they have much more
fuel flowing through the system than needed to maintain a steady control
pressure. The second reason is to keep the fuel cool. The car would not be
running if you had a blockage in the tank, etc...

Some have one fuel pump, some have 2. Both of my 1986 300E's had one.

Earlier CIS systems did not a control pressure regulator. They depended
entirely on the balance between the air flow sensor plate and a calibrated
internal spring to manage fuel flow.

Cold enrichment is more for idling than when the car is in motion.
I am not 100% up to speed on the last versions of the CIS/E system but the
basis of all CIS/E systems is that even without any electric input they
continue to work. That is why MB was so reluctant to let go of the sytem,
even when just about everyone else went to full electric fuel injection
(which MB did in 93/94).
However every CIS system needs fuel pressure to work, if your fuel pressure
is wrong then it may give the impression of fuel stavation.
http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/timing2.htm at the bottom of this page is
a basic layout of the KE (CIS/E) system
http://covintechnical.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tech_2.htm
http://ffp-motorsport.com/tuning/kejetronic.php
http://web.archive.org/web/20060104183213/mb.braingears.com/ have a dig
around in here for tech stuff

How long since you checked your O2 sensor, maybe when it gets to operating
temp it starts to send out bad vibes to the computer.
It may be possible to diconnect it to see if there is any change.
Blocked fuel tank? I would say no because the symptons would not be so
regular and would repeat themselves during the course of driving. It has to
be remebered that the CIS system pumps a lot of fuel with something like 90%

being returned to the tank.
This is the same reason I am not thinking blocked fuel strainer and/or fuel
filters.
"My theory is there is enough fuel in the pump and line to get us the
1.5 mile. But at that point the pump must take over, and for whatever
reason it is struggling. Either the filter is occluded, or their is air
getting into the system. I understand from my mechanic that this car has
two fuel pumps, and they are known for causing issues."
Sounds good on paper but when you realise the amount of fuel that is pumped
through the system
If air gets into the sytem you would have a fuel leak.
If you have fuel pump issues then the problem would not be so regular but
more intermitten.

Anyhow we need some more info before we can start to track down a likely
culprit, such as engine operating temp when the problem occurs, is the car
fine once it gets past the 1.5 mile mark and any other odd things that are
happening.
Has your mechanic checked the trouble codes? From about 88 on the CIS/E
system has self diagnostic abilities.

Most of the plantings at the home we built in
Wisconsin died within the first year. Because we were
on a bluff at the shoreline, the ground was heavy (and
I mean HEAVY) clay. You could dig a hole, pour a
bucket of water in it, and it would take literally
weeks to drain (if the water didn't evaporate first.)

I kid you not, I bent a shovel blade when trying to
dig a hole in the stuff. I even used a hydraulic
power auger to drill the holes for my deck footers,
and I had to hang on the top of the auger arm to force
it into the soil.

Probably too much water then, and poor drainage.

Check the soil -- if soaked, you will have to find a way to get the
water to drain. It should be damp, not full of water. Do not water
unless the soil is quite dry and the leaves droop.

Re: [MBZ] - tank-on-empty - Number of Miles on Reserve

2007-07-18 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The problem with the 123 set up is that the little wheel spins on the little
shaft and what happens when you press the little reset button while moving
is that you put extra pressure on the little wheel which spins on the little
shaft and eventually the little shaft turns but the little wheel does not
and then you have to take the instrument cluster out and do a very fiddly
job of repairing the little wheel so it turns with the little shaft again.
Far as refuelling goes, nothing wrong with doing what you do if there are
plenty of service stations along the way but I would not recommend it when
you are not sure about fuel avaiability. I realise the situation over there
is different to what we have here but a golden rule when driving in the
outback is to have enough fuel to get to not the next fuel place but the one
beyond that. Reason being that sometimes a small outback fuel station may
have shut down, run out of fuel, or have another reason for not being able
to supply fuel.

Uh, sorry, no.

We don't talk about the 420 in mixed company, as it
ended up being the "car from Hell."

Re: [MBZ] all cotton

2007-07-18 Thread LWB250
Glad you brought that up, Roger.

One of the ways the guys at Emmons Coachworks (a high
line detailing shop in the Chicago area I used to drop
in to from time to time) showed me how to tell if the
serging on the edges of the towels was synthetic was
to pull a short piece of it out and see if it would
burn.

You could tell right away of it was synthetic, as it
would "ball up" and melt like plastic rather than just
burn like a cotton fiber.

Re: [MBZ] 300e fuel issues. . ??

2007-07-18 Thread Hendrik Riessen

Forget the Eagle One for the upholstery. Use
Leatherique. The stuff is nothing short of amazing.

Not that your interior would need it, but I have used
it to recover the nastiest, hardest leather from old
MBs that you ever saw. If you follow George's
instructions, you won't be disappointed.

And the owners, George and Krystal are realy great
people who are car enthusiasts like us. They are very
accessible and responsive to any questions or
inquiries about their products.

If you contact them, tell them I referred you (nothing
in this for me, I just like them to know that we're
getting the word out.)

There are others on the list who are familiar with
their products, too. Fantastic stuff and worth every
penny.

Re: [MBZ] - tank-on-empty - Number of Miles on Reserve

2007-07-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
Resetting the trip while moving hurts nothing. The real issue is that a
small plastic part inside disintegrates with age.

And as far as filling up when almost empty, I do it all the time. I burn
about 2 tanks of fuel a week & filling up when I have to means I only have
to stand in front of the pump twice a week, as opposed to 3 or 4 times a
week.

Might pay to teach your son to put more fuel in the car when the light comes

on, it is considered bad to reset the trip meter with the car in motion
(well it is in the notorious W123 trip/odometers).
I personally don't understand why some people only refuel when they are very

near empty.
However if money is tight and pay day is a couple of days away, some have no

option but to.

Yes, I'm up in Canada so it is a little far away. I did check your pictures

Are you using your 560 as regular transport these days?

Re: [MBZ] - tank-on-empty - Number of Miles on Reserve

2007-07-18 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Might pay to teach your son to put more fuel in the car when the light comes
on, it is considered bad to reset the trip meter with the car in motion
(well it is in the notorious W123 trip/odometers).
I personally don't understand why some people only refuel when they are very
near empty.
However if money is tight and pay day is a couple of days away, some have no
option but to.

Re: [MBZ] Drying cars.

2007-07-18 Thread E M
I must pick up a bottle of 303. Also, I must stock up on wax and especially
Eagle One leater care as my auto store seems to stop carring a lot of stuff
over the winter months. Even though I store the porsche over the winter, I
still go out into the garage and wax it often to pass the time. Guess for
most, there isn't much of a call for wax when there's a foot or two of snow
on the ground. :-)

That depends why the low oil light came on, if it's a malfunction of the low
oil warning system then the engine won't seize but if came on cause the oil

I've become a big fan of 303. I use it on the plastic panels on the MB, all
rubber, it even does a good job on metal. I also found it doesn;t smear of
harm glass when I get overspray on it I can buff it until it polishes out.
Also, it does not contain any silicones which is a big problem when a car is
repainted or used around cars being repainted .

Re: [MBZ] all cotton

my old 911 is an '80SC and it's topcoat is tough as nails. The benz is an
'88, so not sure of the clear coat. The previous owner also had some paint
blown in to fix stone chips, so I would image, even if the car came with a
hard clear coat, the touchup was done with newer, softer stuff. It is light
in colour though, so doesn't show as much as some of the darker colours.

A bottle of ArmorAll here is about $7 or so, and smaller than 12 oz. I tend
only to use it on the tired and also, the rubber window seals on the doors.
I use a damp cloth on the dash and a mild soap and water on the MB tex and
then Eagle One leather care to follow. Same on the porsche, but no mild
soap on the leather. Good to know about the UV in the 303 as the 300E lives
outdoors year round. No cracks at all, and I'd like to keep it that way.
:-) Don't know if I want the car to smell like SPF 30 Tropicana though. hee

The fabric is only part of it. If the threads on the borders are nylon, they
will scratch. I cannot use cotton towels on my C320 because they scratch the
EPA formula clear coat (over black paint) which is forever soft.

The answer which I discovered several years ago is Griot's Micro Fiber 25" X
35" drying towel. I can dry the entire car with one after which it goes in the
washer. So, I have two. These towels ended the scratching I had been battling
since I bought the car and the sessions with my P-C random orbital buffer
have been reduced to 3-4 times annually. My almost 24 year old Porsche's clear
coat is hard as glass and ordinary towels don't faze it.

The nano-particle clear coat that MB has been using of late is supposed to
reduce surface scratches by 75%, so they claim.

I am getting closer to the cosmetic restore as I wait. It is one of
those things you sit there and enough stuff gets headed south, so you
figure ... Well, might just have to tear into her and strip it all
off so that I can deal with it in one swell foop. Need to replace
windscreen, some rust items, mirrors, old paint and trim items.

Fellow who came to take the chrome bundts had a nice 300d on veg
oil. His real love is a 220D at home that busted a flex disk, took
out the manual shifter and exhaust while he towed it home. Think it
also ate some of the tunnel.

Knocking on wood that I do not have issues that great.

Exactly tight. You would never use fabric softener on car drying towels.

Got a box of parts. There were bushings for the trans end of the
shifter. Remove shift arm to access old bushing and replace. Put
back where I had marked them to be, but shift position was off and
hard to shift. Go back in attempt to remedy. Had not secured shift
console to neutral position, not had I marked neutral on the trans.
Messed it up but good. Now it rains, creeper is dead and gone,
street is wet, I am reviewing postings and shop manual for how not to
make it worse.

Re: [MBZ] Drying cars.

2007-07-18 Thread LWB250
The 303 is expensive ($12-$16 for a 12 oz. spray
bottle, I believe) but it lasts some time. The thing
that's really great about it is that it has UV
blockers in it, which as you would expect, are pretty
important when it comes to boats

Another alternative for things like dash pads is
suntan lotion, believe it or not. That's what George
of Leatherique recommends, and he's definitely an
expert when it comes to maintaining/restoring interior
materials.

Re: [MBZ] Clean, I'll show you clean

2007-07-18 Thread LWB250
Not to take anything away from Meguire's, but if
you're really serious about good, consistent results,
buy 3M products.

I have tried nearly every wax/cleaner/compound out
there over 20 years of detailing, and no matter how
good it is purported to be, the value/results ratio
with 3M is always the highest.

I'm working on a detailing primer on my Web site - I
keep meaning to get the rest of it posted and I just
can't seem to find time to finish it (no pun
intended.)

www.penoff.com

The older non-clearcoat MB finishes are the ones that
really come back with proper care. I just found all
my 300SE (finny) detailing pics - I'll try and post
some of them.

Re: [MBZ] Turn Signal Issue

Very serviceable. You will need a small file and some care. Unscrew
the stalk from the steering shaft. Figure out which end is not
holding, and then very carefully file the thing a bit deeper until
the stalk stays, but is not trapped there. Did it with Gump and she
is fine now

Re: [MBZ] Drying Cars

2007-07-18 Thread E M
I started helping a friend out with his new Porsche Boxster. He was told to
be careful of the touchless car washes. The reason being, as there are no
brushes involved, the additives in the soap must be much stronger to remove
dirt and grim, while only coming into contact with the paint under light
pressure. Kind of like a dishwasher I guess. I read the warning label on
the dishwasher soap once and it kind of made me question if I wanted to eat
food off plates cleaned with the stuff!! hee hee. I wonder if the paint of
some of our older cars just fares better with touchless than the new water
based paints?

Not questioning what you're saying Donald, just adding what I was told. :-)

Hi Chuck,

I didn't know it was mostly alcohol as I can't really smell it, was I was
once told that how it kept older tires from cracking was that the
formulation would draw the waxes in the rubber to the surface. I was
looking for something better, but never sure what to use. thanks for the
tip on the Meguier's #40. I was thinking of picking up some of their
products as a few friends seem to think the waxes leave a little harder and
more durable shine than Mother's, which is what I'm using now.

Thanks again Chuck.

Re: [MBZ] Audio software for OS X (was: vista / Final Cut Pro)

2007-07-18 Thread LWB250
Garage Band would do this nicely, and also allow you
to tweak/filter/whatever should you choose to. Most
Macs have digital and line in jacks, so connecting
things is rarely an issue. Should it be, there are
plenty of audio interface devices out there to do it.

The other option would be Audacity, which is a
freeware Mac program that will allow you to capture,
save and convert audio files of just about any kind.

This is one of the things that Macs are really well
suited for out of the box...

There is a rather straightforward procedure to remove the stalk and file the
detent with a small triangular file to regain the "hold", but as I haven't
done this in 20 years I can only misinform you if I try to remember the

Re: [MBZ] Vehicle weight

2007-07-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
GVW is the gross (or maximum) weight the vehicle is designed to carry
including fuel, passengers, luggage, etc, etc...

I friend of mines used to drive a limo as a part time job. She could only
put about 5 gallons of gas in the tank when hauling teenagers to proms. So
many would pile into a rented limo that the GVW was exceeded & the rear
suspension would go flat if she filled up. Part of this was the limo
conversion company's fault.

There is a rather straightforward procedure to remove the stalk and file the

positions.

One should think you can wiggle and jiggle until it works even if it is a bit
locked at the moment. If you cannot,
then I think I would pull the tranny out of the car and work on it on the
bench. That would give you the
opportunity to look at the clutch after your burning episode.

If you do get it moving without having to tear into the transmission on the
bench, might I suggest you drain the
fluid and have a look at what comes out. Hopefully no metal chunks.

[MBZ] Audio software for OS X (was: vista / Final Cut Pro)

Anyone have firsthand experience with any audio capture software? One
of the things I would like to do is capture a lot of analog audio I

Can a Mac running OS X do this out of the box? Or what
hardware/software would I need?

Who would spend a grand for FCS? I didn't.

When I decided to take the plunge, they were selling
(full) upgrades for Final Cut Studio for $299 if you
owned a license for any of the programs in it.

I found a copy of Soundtrack Pro on eBay for $65 and
took that along with $299 to get the full version of
FCS. So I ended up paying $364 for $1200 worth of
software.

You can do the same thing right now if you can get a
cheap copy of FCP or FCS to upgrade to FCS 2.0, I
believe.

Re: [MBZ] Drying cars.

2007-07-18 Thread LWB250
If you use towels rather than a chamois, never, ever
use fabric softener on them, as it causes streaking.
Also be sure you use 100% cotton towels, as synthetics
can actually scratch paint.

I have a set of towels designated for nothing but car
drying.

Also, something far better for your plastics and
vinyl, especially if you live in a sunny climate - 303
Protectant. You can find it at a boat supply place
like West Marine. Expensive, but probably the best
stuff you can put on plastic surfaces. No silicones
in it like ArmorAll.

You have a shift issue? First I've heard of it. Why didn't you post it
to the list?

I could really use a copy of Final Cut, but if I had a grand, I'd buy
a Mercedes first.

I was just handed a Wallstreet, and it is indeed a G3 266 Mhz with 64
MB RAM, 4 GB HD, 14.4 (BLAZIN') modem, 20x CD-ROM and onboard SCSI.

Ahh ... those were the days, my friends.

[MBZ] Turn Signal Issue

2007-07-18 Thread R A Bennell
My 76 300D has an issue with the turn signal stalk. If I want to turn left, it
works as it should. If I want to
turn right, I have to hold the lever up as it wants to drop back to the center
position. Is this adjustable in some
manner if I were to pull the wheel or is it a sign that something is becoming
worn?

I am with you, I think a really good professional car wash treats their
water to give you the best wash. When I was in college (and then during
the time I took off from college), I managed a huge full service car
wash. It was the touchless variety. My car, (at the time) a 1971 250,
was washed EVERY single day. It had beautiful paint. Good carwashes
(assuming they don't have the harsh brushes) will not harm the paint. In
fact, if you don't do it correctly, I think washing your car at home
will damage the paint (because the surface contaminants are not washed
off before using a sponge to wash it).

I have seen the kind of damage a car wash with brushes can do over time.
My car NEVER had that. I still use commercial car washes as long they
are brushless.

Re: [MBZ] 300e fuel issues. . ??

2007-07-18 Thread JFreezn
Troy,

Try loosening the gas cap the next time it stalls. Your tank vent may be
clogged with mud ( it hangs down in front of the tank) and the vacuum created
stops fuel flow. You should hear air rush into the tank if this is your
problem.

Re: [MBZ] Clean, I'll show you clean

2007-07-18 Thread Chuck Landenberger
Hi Ed,

You may have heard this before, but Armoral is mostly alcohol (I
think) and will dry out the surface, requiring its more frequent use

For the vinyl surfaces, I use Meguier's #40 and have been very
satisfied.

FWIW another $.02 worth and take care,
