This one is a 2WD as well. For those times when the Dodge's 6'3" bed isn't
quite big enough, it would be nice, and when a 4WD is needed, the Dodge is
at the ready. They'll compliment each other nicely.

I had a rebuilt IP put on my '85 6.9L F350 about 10 years ago, and it cost
me $500. I would have expected quite a price increase over 10 years.
According to the ad, the truck has a nice body and even has a shell on it
(canopy to us Oregonians), so it should be worth the money unless the
engine's hosed. I'll have to check to see if there's oil in the coolant or
vice versa. The '85 had both before the rebuild. Hopefully, I'll get the
chance to buy this '86.

I wish it was a 4x4. But it's ok. Down at the mechanic for a new fuel tank
and sender and then reworking the left rear brake.
I can't see how injection system work would cost $1100. Injectors are about
$12-15ea, the return line/o-ring kit is $30, and if you MUST, the hard injector
lines run about $60. The engine is simple to work on, sorta like the OM61x :D

The return lines are plastic caps on the injectors w/o-rings, and the braided

[MBZ] Ignition switch malfunction, taking lock assembly out

2007-10-27 Thread Craig McCluskey
As I mentioned previously, we were having electrical problems with our
1982 240D/3.0 in Iowa and on the way back to New Mexico. I finally took
things apart today and found the actuating tangs on the lock assembly that
turn the electrical switch were broken.

I took pictures so those interested might see the process.

Lt. Don (aka Wonko) graciously put them on his web page at

http://don.homelinux.net/~don/craig/

The captions are:

Picture
  01 Disconnect battery
Safety first!

  02 Remove underdash cover
The rest of the removal is harder.

  03 Push instrument cluster out
Easy, once the underdash cover is out.

  04 Remove instrument cluster
Instrument cluster already out. Required disconnecting
speedometer cable, disconnecting oil pressure line (10
mm), electrical wires, indicator lamp sockets for seat
belt (green/black) and glow plugs (blue/white), and plug
at left side of cluster. Note the brown wires just to the
left of the bottom center of the opening - those are the
ground connections that cause flaky instrument operation.
Now's the time to clean them.

  05 Remove ignition lock
Turn to position 1 and insert special "tool".

  06 Reinstall cylinder without cover
Needed to make sure lock assembly stays in position 1.

  07 Loosen lock assembly clamp
Underneath dash, 10 mm as well.

  08 Depress locking pin
Secures lock assembly to steering column. Can only be
depressed with ignition in position 1.

  09 Remove vacuum lines
When reconnecting, which one goes where is important. The
one with blue strip is closest to lock.

  10 Lock assembly out
You're supposed to be able to get the plug off the back
with the lock assembly still in place, but I couldn't get
it off. Some fiddling to get the thing in the right
orientation to drop out below the dash. The vacuum switch
bumps up against the heater box.

  11 Lock assembly disconnected
Note the oblong-shaped hole in the middle of the
connector. This fits a rotating projection in the ignition
switch (shown in picture 12) so the connector can be
removed with the switch only in one position (off?
position 1?). If the plug is not fully inserted, the
rotating projection could snag the edge of the hole and
cause the damage observed later.

12 Switch end of lock assembly
Notice the oblong nylon projection in the middle of the
switch. This rotates as the key is turned.

13 Switch removed from lock assy
The three screws the factory manual mentions. They are
not, however, accessable with the electrical plug on the
back of the switch.

  14 Broken actuating tang
The reason we were having problems getting the electrical
switch to function properly as we were coming back from
Iowa. The piece in the far slot is actually supposed to be
attached to the lock assembly (as shown in picture 15).

  15 Switch Actuator-broken tangs
The broken part of the switch actuation mechanism. This
requires replacement of the entire locking assembly.

So now I am wondering if it is the master cylinder is not working
right? I bled all the hose fittings and the drain on the MC, clean
fluid squirted out. New calipers out back, fronts seem OK, so don't
think anything is wrong with them. Brakes do brake, just real hard push
on the pedal reqd.

Did you fill the MC so that the rear reservoir got full?? Don't let the dirt
line fool you.? Also, if you bled the brakes by pumping them,
there is a very real chance that the MC piston seals were damaged, unless you
blocked the pedel so the pistons would not travel
into an unpolished area.? Destroying one half of your braking power will make
the pedal seem hard.

So I took the vac pump off, took it apart, checked all the bits and
cleaned it well. Getting 22in vac now (not sure why the check valves
weren't checking, maybe one was gunked up or something, but it was
pretty clean in there.). Still no brake boost though. I ran the car
for awhile, put the vac gauge on and pushed on the brake pedal, vac went
down to <5in and slowly built back up when I released the pedal. Shut
the car off, took the fitting off where it goes into the booster, got a
whoosh, which tells me it was holding vacuum, at least when not being
pushed. So I'm wondering if it is messed up just when I push the pedal
and it tries to boost? Not sure how that could be as it seems the
diaphragm would be either holding vac or not.

So now I am wondering if it is the master cylinder is not working

I am also recalling there is some kind of vacuum reservoir, I think that
thing that looks like an egg crate at back underneath? Maybe I knocked
something loose on that when doing the rear axle (again)? Too dark to
go check now, tomorrow I guess. Could that be the problem?

If this is a W123, the vacuum reservoir is in the trunk, underneath the
rear window parcel shelf.

Does your central locking system work?

Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL

2007-10-27 Thread Jim Cathey
I installed the new ignition parts. That took longer than expected,
partly because the new wires were longer than the old, partly to remove
the band-aids I'd installed before, partly because the plug wire clamp
to the passenger side was falling apart, and partly just because I'm
slow. I kept the sleeve over the coil wire, I figured that one can't
hurt.

I found a too-short bolt holding the air horn down, it stripped out the
one thread it had 'bitten', so I found a longer screw to replace it
with. (I was checking to see that it wasn't loose.)

Though cold, the car started with less than a second of cranking.
Serious improvement! During a few errands today it started a bit more
normally, that is, after a few seconds of cranking, so it's still
cold-blooded. We'll see over the next few days if its extreme starting
difficulty has been cured or not.

People are strange.

I collect (well, really accumulate) fountain pens, and some yahoo on
one of the discussion groups won a rather nice solid gold Sheaffer
Snorkel on eBay, and then SENT THE PEN BACK because it was shipped a
week later than he expected (and overseas, too!). He had the temerity
to complain about getting negative feedback from the seller after
leaving a "flamer" negative feedback himself!

Not quite clear on the concept, eh? I don't suppose he thought that
getting something shipped overseas insured is a routine matter for a
private seller.

Enough to make you swear of contact with other humans sometimes!

Yes, but the driver's side is a royal pain. Hex socket screws, and no
clearance. You MUST get the driver all the way down into the screw, or
it will strip!

Two ways to approach this: Cut off an allen driver so you can get it
there (works most of the time) OR jack up the engine and remove the
carrier arm (four bolts on the block) and remove it for access.

[MBZ] Motor mounts, OM617

2007-10-27 Thread Allan Streib
Installed my new air cleaner bracket today on my 300D. I ordered
motor mounts at the same time, but it was too late in the day to
start that job, considering it's not one I've done before. Something
unexpected always seems to come up when I do a particular repair for
the first time.

Even with the air cleaner bracket, for example, I had a lot of
trouble with the bottom bolt. Despite trying to be careful and using
a lot of PB Blaster, when I got it out it looked like it it had taken
a few threads with it. So -- had to stop what I was doing and make a
run to the hardware store for a new bolt, also got a tap to chase out
the bore and hopefully clean up the threads enough for it to hold.
It did seem to go back together OK.

Also did not know I had to unfasten the oil line flange on the
turbocharger in order to change the bracket. I did not have a new
gasket for the flange so reassembled with the existing one. It
looked OK, did not tear or anything when I pulled the flange off.

Anyway -- looking at the motor mounts and comparing them to the new
ones, I'd say the ones on the car definitely look flat. Can anyone
write up a quick how-to on the R&R? Looks like there is a center
bolt that goes in from the bottom and two bolts that hold the mount
to the subframe. Do I just pull those two center bolts, raise the
motor a little, and then unbolt and replace the mounts?

Re: [MBZ] Losing coolant, somewhere

2007-10-27 Thread Peter Frederick
Replace your radiator cap.

A bad one allows coolant to boil out when the engine is stopped hot.

Also check for a leaking upper radiator hose, especially the hose
nipple on the radiator, as they get brittle and crack. Will only leak
intermittantly.

Also, if there is ANY coolant in the weep holes on the water pump,
replace it.

[MBZ] Losing coolant, somewhere

2007-10-27 Thread Allan Streib
Noticed the temperature starting to climb while I was at a stoplight
today in my 300D. Got up to 115 or so. Underway it came back down.
Pulled into a parking lot and checked the coolant reservoir, sure
enough it's empty. I usually glance at it whenever I check oil but
it's not that easy to see the level since the fluid is about the same
color as the reservoir, so I might not have noticed it getting low.

Happened to be near a Pep Boys so I bought a bottle of Zerex G-05 and
at the K-Mart next door got a gallon of drinking water. Added about
3 quarts of 50:50 to get the reservoir back up to normal.

About a year ago I did have some leaks around the thermostat housing,
at that time I could see coolant on the garage floor when I backed
out in the mornings. Fixed that and have not noticed any since. No
evidence of a head gasket leak -- when I got home I changed the oil
since it was due anyway, and there was no sign of coolant in the oil,
and no oil in the coolant that I could see.

I'll keep a close eye on it to see if it continues to lose coolant;
can anyone think of any other likely sources of leakage, that might
not be obvious?

2007-10-27 Thread Allan Streib
Noticed a 560 SEL in an towing impound yard here today. Damage down
the passenger side, but didn't look all that bad. The rest of the
car seemed to be in pretty good shape, but I'd guess it's going to go
to Insurance Auto Auctions, assuming it had coverage.

What's up with Wulf? If he has serious problems, it may be worth wile to
swap engines if it's possible (300TD has a 617.952 while the 300sD has a
617.951). If the 300Dt is nice, sell it as a whole. Judging by the fact
that you want to keep Wulf, he must be a nice car. I like my '83 300SD with

It would be interesting if someone would identify the people, houses, roads,
etc. in the pictures. Starting in the upper left, going across, and then
doing the same for each succeeding row of pictures, for example.
The brick house(s) with large chimney(s) were especially interesting as were
the people. I thought about driving my 240D to the meeting but an event in
the family was scheduled for the same time.

How difficult is it to take an OM617 out of a 1982 300Dt (W123) and put it in
an 1985 300SD (W126)? Do you have to swap the tranny too?

Since acquiring the Behemoth (see sig line), I no longer need the 300D and
might just keep the engine and tranny on hand since it is very strong and only
has 117K on it...then I could try to part out the 300D...just a thought.

Thanks,

Chris

If it's leaking fuel to the great outdoors, it's not the injector nozzles.

yes, fuel is leaking to the outside, and this is the reason I'm interested
since the problem is external. I suppose it's possible that a seal in the
IP is leaking which could require some serious fundage to replace. There
are plastic tee's on the injectors with rubber return lines connected to
them. This is a common place for leaks just like it is with old Mercedes
return lines. The truck does run and drive despite the fuel leak. It's in
the next town over, probably worth driving it and taking the chance unless
it's leaking enough to leave a nice diesel fuel slick behind it and endanger
other cars on the road.

If it's leaking fuel to the great outdoors, it's not the injector nozzles.
I can't recall what the return line setup is on those, whether it's hard
pipe or rubber hose, but if the leakage is at the injectors I'd suspect
the return lines first.

Re: [MBZ] OT?: OBDII Scanner

2007-10-27 Thread Kevin Kraly
trying to find a scanner that will
work with my '93 Isuzu Trooper, supposedly OBD compatible because it used
GMC engine electronics.

That's strange since it has the 3.2L DOHC Isuzu V6. I know that the earlier
Troopers/Rodeos used the 2.8L and 3.1L GM V6's. Right now, there are two
Rodeo's in the family fleet, a '91 3.1 and a '95 3.2, both with around
200Kmi on them. Which one do you think will last longer? I'm betting on
the 3.1L since it makes far less engine noise. Of course, the 3.2L engines
were never really quiet to begin with.

There are lots of OBDII models for under $100, all pretty much the
same from what I can tell. Just buy the cheapest.

OBDI is another matter. It was never really standardized the way
OBDII was... every manufacturer used its own connector and signal
protocol. I've been through this trying to find a scanner that will
work with my '93 Isuzu Trooper, supposedly OBD compatible because it
used GMC engine electronics. No dice with anything short of a Snap-On
model that goes for $500+ on Ebay.

I settled for a Actron model that both does OBDII and also comes with
three cables for Ford, GM, and Chrysler OBDI cars. Think it cost me
about $250. Won't talk to the Isuzu, but has worked fine with my '86
Lincoln and a friend's '91 Cutlass. But they're getting hard to
find---nobody cares about OBDI in the DIY market any more.

OK thanks y'all -- lunchtime pondering got me thinking the same thing,

I see Pep Boys advertise 2 or 3 models starting at $50 or so, going up
higher. Not sure what the diff is among them. I have seen other places
advertise similar items at similar prices, I guess it depends on
features. You might also be able to build one of your own that fits a
Palm Pilot or laptop, get a cable to connect it to them and some
software (which I think was free from some guys who made it). Search
for those things, I looked at a couple a year or so ago, did not
bookmark them. As I recall the cable was about $50, that's what got me
thinking to buy one of those cheap things that has the connector and
then get the software and hook it all up.

I spotted one on Craigslist for $500 that's in need of some fuel delivery
attention. It runs, but it's leaking fuel. The seller was told that it
needed the leaky fuel injectors replaced to the tune of $1100. I know that
I really don't need another truck, but this one may be a good one to fix and
sell or loan out to those who want to borrow the new Dodge. This one is a

Re: [MBZ] W126 suspension questions - front shocks, rear springs

2007-10-27 Thread LarryT
Rusty rents the appropriate spring compressor. It rents for ~$95 IIRC -
it sells for almost $1000 - again IIRC - the price gives some indication of
the amount of engineering and quality fabrication is needed to *SAFELY*
compress MB springs. The MB springs are not like lesser cars - the kinds of
springs compressors used and sold will not safely compress the MB springs.
Don;t want you to get hurt (or worse) to save a few bucks.

Not sure about the shocks -- you can look on Rustys website to see if
the pn's match - www.buymbparts.com - can't hurt to look -

Puffing back and forth is a failed check valve - if the pump itself was
bad it wouldn't pull any air in. Oil in the lines makes me think
check valves, too (the ones on the pump, that is, not the one for the
booster).

However, your booster should not vent down completely on one pedal
push, you should get three or four before it's compeletely dead..

[MBZ] Weird vacuum problem

2007-10-27 Thread Rich Thomas
79 300TD I redid the brakes a couple weeks ago, new rear calipers, bled
out all old fluid, etc. Worked really fine.

A few days ago, no brake boost, or rather, a bit of boost at first pedal
push then nothing), slow turning off. Checked all the vac lines, looked
OK. Drove it again today, same problems. So put the vac meter on the
line, getting about 22in vac, OK, push the brake pedal, goes down to
like 5in or so, really low, and no boost, builds back slowly. So pumped
down the booster with the mity vac, same thing (which maybe I would
expect since no constant vac on it). (This says the booster is probably
OK, not leaking vac? Or maybe since that check valve is in there it
could be leaking down in the booster? The check valve is stuck in the
hose really tightly, can't get it out with destroying it so hard to test
the booster straightaway.) Put the vac gauge on with engine running,
getting 22in vac, push the brake, goes down low again but does not build
up, then vac needle going crazy bouncing between vac and pressure.
Whussup wif dat? Took off the gauge and sho nuff you can feel
huffing/puffing and no constant suction. Weird, it just did that.
Maybe doing it before too.

So now I'm thinking the vac pump must be acting up again (I have rebuilt
it twice now). but since I was getting a good vac there for awhile I am
thinking those little one way valves inside the vac pump must be clogged
or inop or something? That sound like a good diagnosis? Think if I
suck on each hose coming right from the pump, or maybe blow some air
into them, that might do something (useful)? I am thinking the booster
is probably OK, must be there in the vac pump somewhere.

There is a bit of oil in the lines, I guess maybe that could be clogging
things up. I am reluctant to take the vac pump off/apart again, though
I am pretty good at it by now.

Any thoughts?

If you don't use a spring compressor you run a quite serious risk of
killing yourself -- the suspension does not swing down far enough to
decompress the spring,

Don't know about the front shocks, but a W126 is significantly lighter
than a W116 chassis, especially with a V8.

Hm. Even with experience and a lift I think 10 minutes is pretty
unlikely. In my W123 it was a full afternoon's work. I think the 126
might have a little more room, avoiding the need to unbolt the
transmission mount and wedge everything over to the side. Still -- 10
minutes?

And are you saying he used a *used* piston in the repair? Maybe
that's why you still have some flaring. I'd say, install the full B2
repair kit from Rusty, do a full fluid and filter change and use Mobil
1 ATF, also do the K2 upgrade since you're in there. I did all that
on mine after the B2 failure and it shifts nice and firm now, no hint
of flare.

I have a writeup of the whole thing somewhere, with part numbers. Let
me know if you'd like it.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300D Climate Control

2007-10-27 Thread Scott Ritchey
Jim Cathy was kindly posted this Type II ACC amplifier data at:
http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/chryaccfh/chryaccfh.html
so it is available to others. Be warned that there is more than one version
of this circuit, but they are similar. For some reason, the schematic does
not show well in a web browser so I recommend viewing it with a graphic app
like Paint or MS Picture and Fax viewer.

Subject: [MBZ] 1980 300D Climate Control

I want to thank the LIST for all the help repairing my climate control. I
have been working anywhere from 6-8 hours a day on it for a week straight!
Yesterday I went to the pick N pull to get the parts I needed to make a
tester for the ACC Amp. The '79 that I was stripping had a amp and a
original Servo, took the parts from the servo that I could use. Paid the
exorborant price of $28.52 for the stuff I needed.

Once home I decided that I would try the Amp. It worked perfectly!!

I want to say that Scott really helped me tremedously! Many thanks Scott.
I believe that the little Op Amp on the circuit board on both of the acc
amps are bad. So my advice to you all is that when you see those original
Servo's the amp probably hasn't gotten much use and might be good. And they
fit in the pocket.

I called Unwiredtools.com today and the support guy Steve gave me some
ideas on my vacuum leak said it was probably the double vacuum servo for the
defrost. My system leaks down within min. though with the contol panel to
off it doesn't. Also at their web site they have a really nice electrical
diagram for the climate control am going to scan and enlarge them to see if
they are better to read.

Scott the more I think about it I think that the OP amp on the ACC seems
to short to the cold.

Well thanks again.. hope to find that Vacuum leak.. soon..

  Douglas

  Hi again,
Yes , on my watch! 10 min. not including lift and drop. I was standing,
buffing a car behind the rack and watching! He used a puck on a bar to compress
and an air impact to drop the crossmember and a pick to pull the clip. Greased
the dogbone and slaped all back together. I watch him lift it by hand and screw
in the bolts.! !

I don't think he charges less than 2 hours.
  Would a longer dogbone help?

[MBZ] W126 suspension questions - front shocks, rear springs

2007-10-27 Thread Steve MacSween
Number 1 - does anyone know if it's true you can use the front shocks with
the Bilstein part # for a w116, on a w126? I have been told the shocks are
identical in dimensions, though they are valved slightly differently.

Number 2 - rear springs - if I am reading the material I have found on-line
correctly, you can either:

(A) drop the subframe mount and suspension arm slightly, take off the shock,
and remove the caliper, then just take the spring out with NO compression,
OR

(B) leave the suspension in place and use a quality compression tool (with
its arm going through the center of the plates) to remove the spring, with
the caliper taken off for clearance.

Thanks

Also, the govt is taking away the large farms from the very productive
farmers and giving the land to homeless people - so where once was a country
filled with farms producing enough food to export with become a country of
starving millions. Naturally, the US / UN will send millions (billions ?)
in food aid - most of which will go into the pockets of crooked officials
and the people will *still* starvc.

But the gasoline will be cheap -

Re: [MBZ] OT, TV's

2007-10-27 Thread Redghost
Could be. I have a wood burning one and the mantle has heat damage
to the finish. Had an artist pal tell me never to place any good art
or pictures I wanted to keep on the mantle or above it due to the
heat that emanates around there. Gas may be fine, since there is
probably a ducting/vent system directing heat out into the room more
than up.

I like the LCD's. They can be used as computer monitors.
 1920x1080 in
a 46" lets me work with the thing 3' from my face without needing
bifocals. The HDtv part is nice too. Use Windows Media Center
 (XP) or
Vista and you have a HD recorder on your PC. Let's you record
 weekly
shows and it automatically adjusts if they move the schedule
 around.
I have to use the VGA input because my video board won't do high-
 res
using the DVI output. Looks good enough.

Got the TV from Costco. It's now $1400 with shipping. I think I
 paid
about twice that a year ago. Will probably be < $1000 after
 Christmas.

That was back in the days of the old list wasn't it? Or maybe just during the
changeover?
I seem to remember him emailing everybody on the list independantly to tell us
how he'd been screwed.

IIRC his big complaint was something like the glow plug relay had failed or
something else that nobody could have predicted.
Seems like he had another 240D that was total crap and he had to start it by
rolling down hill or something. Seems also like he commuted like 5 miles or

loudmouth from CA who got banned. I think the one who bought Darrell's

was from PA, but what was his name?

Re: [MBZ] OT, TV's - Add DirectTV

2007-10-27 Thread Curt Raymond

Depends on how good a projector it is. A 40" LCD is just past $1100.
A good projector starts at about $1000. Anything else is going to be tough to
watch because the focus will be lumpy and brightness not so exciting.

We've got a Nintendo Wii which is showing just how bad my old 19" tv is. I
thought about doing the projector thing. Ours is a one story house so I could
mount the projector in the ceiling with just a prisim in the living room. Then
have a 60" screen what I could easily use my computer on.
Turns out to do everything I wanted would take about a $3000 projector. Never
mind the autodarkening shades...

My livingroom is not so large, a 32" LCD tv (around $800) will be plenty.

I *think* the rule of thumb is your max tv size is 3x the distance you can sit
away from it. So if you want a 60" you need 180" or 15' of viewing distance.
Anything else stresses your eyes and will make the tv overwhelm the room.
A friend of a friend has a 60" tv in a room just a bit bigger than my living
room, you can only get maybe 10' away from it. The screen is too big for that
room, I feel the urge to move my head while I'm watching it. I find it fairly
uncomfortable...

I was at a friend's warehouse/lounge yesterday.
He showed me his newest toy, a TV projector. On one side of the TV
 room,
he's got two sofas. On the other side, a large (approx 15' wide) movie
 screen.
Turn on the projector, turn on the DVD player, turn on the sound
 system,
and enjoy. I bet the whole thing cost less than a 40" LCD. With direct
sunlight on the windows and teh light filtering blinds closed, it was
 OK, but
not very bright. He says it's fantastic when it's dark outside, and
 very
good when it's cloudy.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] U-pull haul

2007-10-27 Thread Curt Raymond

Thats what I've got for Dory too. BMW also supplies a nice jack with a lump on
the top of the lifting plate. Presumably the lump fits into a dent on the car.
I made a 2x6x6" block that I use between the jack and the car, the lump helps
align the jack while getting the jack up to the level of the car.

I traded a '91 Ford Tempo for 'em. I think both of us thought we got the better
of the deal.

I don't know if it's really flexible enough given how that area wads
up when the top is folded. Maybe if it was very thin.

That's it. I can't remember the name. I now agree that Gabe was the
loudmouth from CA who got banned. I think the one who bought Darrell's car
was from PA, but what was his name?

Re: [MBZ] OT, TV's - Add DirectTV

2007-10-27 Thread Mitch Haley
I was at a friend's warehouse/lounge yesterday.
He showed me his newest toy, a TV projector. On one side of the TV room,
he's got two sofas. On the other side, a large (approx 15' wide) movie screen.
Turn on the projector, turn on the DVD player, turn on the sound system,
and enjoy. I bet the whole thing cost less than a 40" LCD. With direct
sunlight on the windows and teh light filtering blinds closed, it was OK, but
not very bright. He says it's fantastic when it's dark outside, and very
good when it's cloudy.

Mitch.
