White is a great Mercedes color. Our '67 200D was called the "White
Tornado" by our sons classmates because it would take a half mile to get it
up to 45 mph by very carefully feeding power to the slipping clutch. No
drag racing, no jackrabbit starts for the White Tornado. With a hole in the
muffler and 4000 rpm in second gear, everyone knew when our son had arrived.
We let it slip until he finished high school. It was a very effective
safety factor.

Correct. You also need the sections of the manual that lay out the vac
schematics, so you can see how the whole thing is organized, and so you
can know what to check and what it means. You need to work on the door
locks through the fittings at the firewall and those under the front
pass side carpet.

I just did this exercise this week.

Sure.

Many of us have been there. With the right tool it is straightforward.

That right tool is a Mity-Vac, a hand-held device that has a hand-operated
vacuum pump and a vacuum gauge. See http://www.mityvac.com/

One connects the Mity-Vac up to various parts of the system, operates the
pump, and observes whether the vacuum stays up or leaks off. By
systematically going through the system, one can find the offending
part(s) and determine how to fix/replace them.

I think it's fair for a car is the shape described. I'd pay it. Only
thing, I keep hearing all these stories about how long lived diesels are and
then see many with engine rebuilds at less than 400,000 kms. Nothing wrong
with a rebuild engine, but makes me question the premium often asked for old
diesels? I have over 350,000kms on my gasser now, and it's all original.
Engine is strong and trans shifts well, so I do question the whole, "diesels
go forever thing".

But to answer your question, I think your car seems like a fair deal. I
even think the colour is pretty good. :-)

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames

2007-11-09 Thread Zoltan Finks
Okay, many of you know I am quite inept at fixing cars. But here's an
example of my ingenuity. I can fix stuff - it may not be pretty, but I
can. Really.

I'm attaching three jpegs. One of them is a before shot.

I had some nice stainless sheet metal pieces that I've kept for years
since working in a metal fab. job.

I set about making a plate to fuse the broken frame together. As I got
into it, I realized I should make a sandwich. A similar plate is
bolted to the inside of the frame, and the fasteners run through.

The fasteners are cheap and weak. I intend to replace them with some
nice high grade ones, but they are holding fine so far.

The frame is rock solid, and now my only problem is that the rear
wheel bearing is so loose, the tire rubs when I pedal hard, and the
chain can skip.

Re: [MBZ] xenon bulbs burned & purple...

2007-11-09 Thread John M McIntosh
Depending on what you have for lamps/lens the higher wattage bulbs
could melt things because of higher heat.
Normally this is not a problem for mercedes assembles that are not
USA specific.

You are running 20% higher wattage thru the wires, normally this is
not a problem for mercedes, but your milage may vary depending on
the year. This might require installing relays and running extra
wiring, likely I would do that for my w123 since the wiring there is
technically marginal for current flow. But technically it's not
needed to be done.

now if you run 100W bulbs the two issues above become much higher/
riskier

It is funny how some colors stand the test of time and others become very
dated. The golds and avocado greens of
the 70's have not really stood the test of time like some colors do. We still
have an avocado green refrigerator in
the basement. Don't mind the color but wouldn't want it in the kitchen now.

Sometimes if the vehicle gets old enough, the color starts to look good again.
I have a 68 Chevy pickup that is
light blue. I can't say I have ever really liked the color and for a long time,
I planned to paint it a darker
blue. Now, I wouldn't do that. I guess it grew on me because now I do not think
the truck would look quite right in
a newer color.

I'll note if you use H4 you have a choice of now using
Philips X-Treme Power H4
or
Osram Night Breaker H4

Both I think use the concept of reflecting infrared lighwaves back to
the filament making it burn hotter.
I'll note this is fairly new to car bulbs but is has been used in
Philips 90W IR outdoor bulbs for awhile now.

Osram also makes a Hyper H4 which is 70/65w versus the 60/55w
normally found. In my reading the Hyper bulbs
get the nod for the brightest bulb, but at the expense/risk of
running higher wattage. Otherwise apparently the Philips are
the brightest H4 bulbs at the moment using normal wattage.

> Do the HID bulbs last SUPER long? That would justify the price, in

Yes regular tungsten based bulbs are rated in 100 of hours using a
standardized test procedure.
HID bulbs are rated in thousands of hours, thus for example my burned
out bulb is the original one used in a
car which had day time running headlamps for a 10 year period. They
speak of the bulb life as the "life of the car"
we mercedes owners know that means heh? 7 years or something...

I note that on the island here I always see Smart cars running with
burn out headlamps since they are DRL and use H7 high intensity bulbs
which have
a low hundreds of hours rating and of course replacement of the bulb
is a non-trivial affair. You can get bulbs which have higher hour
ratings but
they produce less light

Well,

It would be a little odd to see an ad, any ad, start with;

"Here we have a completely common 85 Chevy Cavalier. No, really, look on any
street corner or at any stop light and I absolutely give you a 100%
guarantee that you will see at least seven of these. They are literally
everywhere you look. Why that's good for you is that parts are so plentiful
for it you could steal one or two parts off of every Cavalier you find and
completely rebuild an entire car. What's more these things were so crappy,
what with parts falling off regularly anyway, that the owners of the cars
you're stealing from will never even realize anything is wrong. They'll just
assume they hit a pothole too hard."

Re: [MBZ] Diesels Vs Hybrids

2007-11-09 Thread Tom Hargrave
The gasoline we burn is just a small part of the demend.

You've heard of the stone age, the bronze age and the iron age? Well, we
are in the petrolium age. Let me explain.

Almost all of the plastic we use, from parts in your car to just about
everything made of plastic in your house, is petrolium based.

The fertilizer industry is petrolium based.

Much of the paint industry is petrolium based.

Much of the solvent industry is petrolium based.

We use petrolium based fuel to raise and harvest our food.

We use petrolium based fuel to transport all of our goods.

We use petrolium based fuel (natural gas) to heat our homes and
factories and offices.

And the list goes on & on & on.

In other words, stop driving and it gets a little better but the problem
does not go away.

The short term answer is coal - anyone want to re-consider having a
nuclear power plant built in his or her backyard?

Ah another opportunity to float an opinion. You're right, Rich, it is
informative and interesting to hear all of us sound off (and I've been
doing it a lot lately I know).

It is demoralizing to hear about what China and India and whoever else
are doing - seems it would more than cancel out anything sensible we
do over here.

But I have a theory that if all Americans (extremely theoretical, I
know) would just make one change, our energy problem would be solved.

The one I was thinking of yesterday as I walked the pooch was this:
If everyone would just start driving in a reasonable fashion rather
than mashing the accelerator senslessly, I think the impact would be
huge. I'm talking about behavior like accelerating fast even though
there is a stop sign or a nice downhill in 50 ft. The amount of time
gained by driving like mad is often negligible. People just fricking
don't think when they drive. It's rush up on the car in front of you
and tail them - even when you are not in any particular hurry. I wish
folks would just take a second and ask themselves: Why am I raving
like this? I think TV and movies have a lot to do with promoting this
- especially in young people.

It was an eye opener for me recently when I had the opportunity to get
a ride from an about 19 year old boy. He told me that people drive so
slow and it "pisses the f___ out of you. And you just have to tailgate
them to let them know." Next time you see a young person drive, watch
them - they are very rough on the car. And watch the "gangsta'" types
drive. It is standard m.o. to pretty much floorboard the car everytime
you take off, and yank the wheel when making turns. Unfortunately a
lot of times these cars are mid 90's Chevy Caprices which probably are
getting about 8 mpg around town under these driving conditions.

Anyway, I know human nature will never change. But I do literally
think that eliminating this problem alone could make an immense
difference.

a ride from an about 19 year old boy.

But I do literally
think that eliminating this problem alone could make an immense
difference.

Re: [MBZ] Diesels Vs Hybrids

2007-11-09 Thread Zoltan Finks

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cyclistas?

2007-11-09 Thread ernest breakfield
hi Brian!

i'm with Mitch; i'd measure it out if i were you and were interested
in getting the most accurate figure. i've found a good bit of
difference between tires that were marked the same sizes; also, tire
pressures and rider weights all have an influence in the game.
i'd probably do the roll-out as described, but would do it several
times and for multiple rotations just to average out the measurement.

but truthfully, what do i know? after messing with them extensively,
i don't even use cyclometers anymore; it matters to me more how long it
takes me to get anywhere than how far it is, and i already wear a
chronometer... ;-)

cheers!

Va power is evaluating resuming construction of a Nuke at one of their
existing sites. IIRC, they had a building permit at one time - don't know
how long it is good for or perhaps it doesn't expire. I;'m sure the
environmentalists will be trotting to court to put the brakes on -

IMO, nuclear is the only practical way to provide power to vast numbers of
the population. Even France is fully committed to nukes.

I worked on the Clinch Riv Breeder Reactor project near Oak Ridge Tn - the
politicians dumped it after spending $2.5 Billion on construction and
material. Ended up with a very expensive hole in the ground. The project
was never meant to provide electricity - only to prove the concept on a
production but one congressman said, "We don't need the electrity." Duh, we
just added a turbine generator to prove the project.

Another congressman, further showing his ignorance said, "We have waste nuke
matl stored al over the US - we don't need another reactor producing waste."
The nitwit didn;t understand that we were building a reactor that would
*use* all that waste as fuel!! Double duh!

Oh well - too late now.

You are pretty much correct, but the problem is the rest of the
developing world wants to live exactly as we do here in the states (or
other developed countries) and they will burn everything in sight to get
there --coal, oil, trees, whatever.. Telling them to stop or grow
greenly is a good thought, but I just don't think it is going to happen.

I got into a discussion the other day about Algore and his warmist
binge. Whether he is right or wrong really makes no matter -- my point
was that he could get a LOT more benefit (on the enviro front) by
changing how the rest of the world is going to grow rather than harping
on minimal marginal effects in the developed countries of changing
consumption. He is not, to my knowledge, making movies in Chinese and
whatever languages they speak in India, and promoting them in the
schools there to an impressionable captive audience, or haranguing
Chinese politicians about the CFPPs they are building at a very rapid
rate (and all the other crap they are spewing into their/our
environment). If he did, they would either politely laugh him out of
town or tar and feather him and ride him out on a rail. Here and in
Europe there are enough people who have the luxury (and it is a luxury)
to worry about such things over and above what consumes most peoples' in
the world's bandwidth and aspirations, and so he has an audience.
Again, it matters not whether he is right or wrong about the global
climate change thing, it's where/how he chooses to make an effect and
how much that effect could be. Selling carbon credits on a
transatlantic flight to wealthy travelers is a nice feel good idea, but
stopping one dirty CFPP will have lots more benefit. If he really had
sense and commitment that is where he would be making the effort;
otherwise, it comes off **looking like** a scam to raise taxes and
generate income for something or someone (whether it is or not, I don't
know).

Using WVO to make fuel is a great thing. How much effect will it have
compared to the real hard problems, like every Chinese and Indian
wanting to live like your average (or even poverty-stricken, especially
the fat ones!) American? Not much really. But it is a nice start, and
A Good Thing.

Big baseload nukes feeding electric or hydrogen cars is probably the
cleanest way to go, as long as we can keep the whackjobs from turning
the leftovers into bombs. Yeah that will take time, and yeah it will
cost a lot, and yeah some fringies are way out there on the nuke waste
thing. But you drive across this huge country, and see all the open
empty land (even near a big city like Houston), and finding a place for
a few nukes (or their waste products) is not too hard to do. The plant
about 80 miles from here is looking to add a couple more reactors, as is
another one up towards Austin. To my knowledge none of them has had any
but the most minor incidents in 10 or 20 years operation, and the newer
designs are faster to build and cleaner to run. And their emissions are
minimal, and the waste is pretty minimal too. As technology marches on
that will be a solved problem.

I really enjoy seeing the knowledgeable and reasoned (and even
ill-reasoned) ideas floated from our little community of Benz-heads
here. Those intertubes are a wonderful thing.

[MBZ] quarter window glass installation, '81 300TD

2007-11-09 Thread Marshall Field
If anyone out there has done this, I sure would appreciate their comments.

I am replacing the glass in the quarter window. There is a large "L" shape
metal frame that the window rubber seal needs to be attached to, which in
turn is attached to the vehicle by pulling the rubber lip over the edge of
the window cut out and then a couple of sheet metal screws hold the whole
thing to the body

The window rubber seal has a 45 degree angled projection that runs half way
around the seal, that needs to be inserted (somehow) into a channel on the
metal frame.

I have tried soapy water, silicone grease, light tapping with a rubber
mallet and lots of hand pressure trying to coax this seal into the channel.
For more hours than I care to admit

Any ideas from the group will be appreciated.

Re: [MBZ] doing your part

2007-11-09 Thread Harry Watkins
There is a company named Syntroleum in OK that can make highly refined
diesel and jet fuel from natural gas or coal or animal guts.

They are going 50/50 with Tyson to build a plant in OK that can turn
500 mil lbs. of guts into 73,000 gal of diesel.

The Air Force has flown a B-52 and a C-17 with a 50/50 mix of their
natural gas diesel.

Just a drop in the barrel, but its another start.

No interest except that I own stock in the company and plan to be
filthy rich. (grin)

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Diesels Vs Hybrids

2007-11-09 Thread Rich Thomas

If he really had
sense and commitment that is where he would be making the effort;
otherwise, it comes off **looking like** a scam to raise taxes and
generate income for something or someone (whether it is or not, I don't

Looks like I'll try a resolder. If I had another gasser here, I
would try swapping relays.

The 16v relay is $250, the 8v is $100.
I assume the 8V will work, but the fuel would cut off before I hit redline?

we really need a 4,000 sq. foot home? Can we not wait to go to Wal Mart
until we need more than a bottle of ketchup in town? Would it hurt us in
some way to walk to the local corner store for that candy bar we desire?

Are we as a culture - AMERICA sucks at this one - utilizing what we do have
to our best advantage? Solar, Wind, Hydro, Bio, etc.

Mine as the generation of "I want it now and I want it my way" Well folks
perhaps it is time that we learned that the earth is NOT the Burger King
Corporation and we cannot always get what we want. (Yeah I know, a perfect
line for the Rolling Stones song) :)

We have no clue what it is like to do without or to conserve what we do have
for tomorrow. Finding another use for something that has fulfilled its
purpose? (The scratched DVD that makes a great light reflector/scarecrow
attachment in a garden) We have no clue.

For me, the creation of Biodiesel and it's effects on my community create
enough affects in me to make me smile. :)

Subject: [MBZ] 190E 2.3-16 fuel pump relay

Well, my occasional engine failure has finally become persistent
now that the weather is colder.
If I shut it the ignition off for a few seconds and turn it back on,
it restarts if I was going fast enough to keep the engine turning.

When I got home, I shut down for a couple minutes, restarted, and listened.
When the engine died about 30 seconds later, the fuel pump was not running.
What's the troubleshooting procedure?
Should I be looking at the pump relay, the crank sensor, or the overload
gizmo first?

If we started planning to build a nuclear power plant today, construction

And as far as I know, none are in the planning stages because no-one wants

It's probably like some of the worst industrial areas here in the
first half of the 20th century, only compounded by the power demands
of a 21st century econonomy.

IMO we (the western world, the US in particular) need to start
developing nuclear power again, ASAP.

2007-11-09 Thread David Hemsley

Certainly algea is one avenue that still needs improvement on yet posses a
strong possibility. However, there are also limitations with algae that
   hopefully research will help alleviate.

My point of interest for biodiesel is to utilize community based resources.
I cannot even recall how many times I have been offered soy at a very good
price - but lets review the offer a little more closely. Lets see the soy
is grown in South America shipped to the US via ocean going tankers and then
shipped closer to me by rail and finally delivered to me by truck. In my
opinion that makes absolutely NO SENSE!

Palm oil is great. IF it is local, currently grown, harvested and utilized
commodity. However, to cut down forests to plant more crop only defeats the
purpose of sustainability in my thought process.

I still say reusing (processing) spent restaurant cooking oil or fat
is the only truly environmentally responsible way to make bio diesel.

China has lots of coal. They also have the worlds largest underground

And what do you think the chances are that they have all the
sophisticated scrubbers etc. on the stacks of these power plants they

Re: [MBZ] Mobil 1 5w50

If you see extreme cold you can run M1 0W-40 in your OM-617.
Otherwise Delvac-1, a/k/a Mobil-1 "Truck & Turbo Diesel" OR M1 15W-50
will be fine. Even the 15W-50 will flow much better at cold
temperatures than a conventional oil.

Approved oils at http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html; any of the 229.1
oils would be appropriate in an OM-617.

Cause he's already out the cost of the PMO, and this was supposed to
be just a gentlemanly transaction. I had some TV parts sitting around
not being used, and he had a need. I offered the parts to him for

My wife sells books on ABE, so I'll just take the PMO to the PO with
her next big shipment and see if they'll accept it for postage.
