Re: [MBZ] Rear quarter window replacement '81 300TD

2007-11-11 Thread archer
Never did that particular job but have had the same problem getting a seal
into a groove or getting a part into a seal; especially an old, stiff seal.

Did you try sliding the well lubricated seal into the groove from one end
since it's L shaped?

Did you try reversing the procedure and inserting the 45 degree projection
first?

I keep a handful of the cheapest putty knives of all different widths and
use them as sliders to install rubber seals. With a well lubricated seal,
I'll have a putty knife on each side while pushing a segment of the seal
down in the groove. As the seal seats, I'll keep sliding the putty knives
forward until I come to a sharp turn. Then I'll use a very narrow putty
knife or even a broad bit screwdriver ground very flat to work it around the
turn, or even an ice pick which sometimes works. Sometimes a wide putty
knife works where a narrow putty knife doesn't.
It sounds like no one on the group has ever done that job or is familiar
with the part.
Good luck,
Gerry

One more time, hasn't anybody out there done this job before?

If anyone out there has done this, I sure would appreciate their comments.

I am replacing the glass in the quarter window. There is a large L
 shape
metal frame that the window rubber seal needs to be attached to, which in
turn is attached to the vehicle by pulling the rubber lip over the edge of
the window cut out and then a couple of sheet metal screws hold the whole
 thing to the body

The window rubber seal has a 45 degree angled projection that runs half
 way
around the seal, that needs to be inserted (somehow) into a channel on the
 metal frame.

I have tried soapy water, silicone grease, light tapping with a rubber
mallet and lots of hand pressure trying to coax this seal into the
 channel.
For more hours than I care to admit

Any ideas from the group will be appreciated.

 Regarding his hydro-conversion system.

He's taking energy from the alternator to break down water into hydrogen
oxygen then he's feeding hydrogen oxygen into the engine to create
 power.

 Sounds great, right?

But wait - he has to use that power plus more to drive the alternator
that he uses to generate the electricty that he uses to break the water
 down into hydrogen and oxygen!

Last I checked there was no such thing as a prepetual motion machine and
 his hydro-conversion is a farce.

I am quite a bit more than slightly confused by this.

In producing bikodiesel I stress removing every bit of water I
 possibly can
prior to putting the fuel in my vehicle's tank.

Now, am I to understand that somethig to do with adding water
 increases the
gas mileage? How about corrosion, injector debris from the chemiclas
 in
water, etc?

That's a turbohydrodiesel, makes fuel from water to give excellent
mileage on whatever is put into it. I'm guessing he has a
 magnetic flux
inducer on the fuel line, and a Tornado turbulator on the air
 intake
too. There might even be a spare tank somewhere to collect the
 fuel it
  generates as it is driven.

Re: [MBZ] Parts Quality

2007-11-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
Sometimes price means quality and sometimes not. We move a lot of kegerator
parts have discovered that price does not necessarily matter.

For example:

We used to buy and resell Taprite CO2 regulators. Taprite is the largest
regulator manufacturer in the world and they build them all in the USA
(Texas). But I found another smaller manufacturer who also builds their
regulators in the USA (New Jersey) and the quality is equal. I've
disassembled both and have compared them side by side.

Re: [MBZ] Rear quarter window replacement '81 300TD

2007-11-11 Thread LarryT
I had a similar problem with an opening rear quarter window w'strip - worked
on it for hours as you mentioned with the same results. Then I had a
windshield replaced in another car - talked to the technician - he took the
problem parts and within 5 minutes had it together! I looked at the can of
silicon he was using - it was a 3M product labelled Silicon Spray - he said
there's silicone and then there's *Silicone* - he said WD40 is not pure
enough - as is most other sprays. He gave me the can he was using and it
lasted a long time.

You can also use an oyster knife to work the w'strip into place - the blade
is dull so it will not cut the rubber if used with care.

I suggest you take the frame, glass and w'strip to a glass shop and ask if
they will fix it for you - or perhaps they will give or sell a can of spray
silicone.

Good luck -

For general gentle prying I find an old carbon-steel butter

excellent for tucking and poking, not quite sharp enough to
 cut if you use care.

Otherwise, I have absolutely no clue.

Thanks for the tip, it's good to know that not all silicone sprays are created
equal. It explains why some silicone sprays dissolve plastics.

WD40 is mostly kerosene, I don't think it has any silicone in it, but I could
be wrong. IIRC, the penetrant in WD40 is DMSO.

Yea, I had it a 15 ATDC. How do I check to see if the timer is set
properly? This is my first outing with a IP deal.

Peter Frederick wrote:
15 ATDC, not BTDC. The actual injection starts at 24 or 26 BTDC, just

Make sure the pump is NOT 180 degrees out -- they will actually run
that way (fuel sprayed in at TDC on the intake stroke), but not very
well, lots of noise and smoke with very little power. Sorta like
serious spark knock, as it ignites too early. This is a known problem
on older pumps, for a period the markings on the spline were off
backwards on some pumps. Should only lock properly at one position,
but I suspect you can screw the tool in and hold it on the back side of
the governor drive, too (no nipple but pressure will hold it).

Otherwise, check to make sure the pump fit in corectly and that the
 injection timer is set properly.

[MBZ] Diesel/gas prices

2007-11-11 Thread LarryT
We've talked about the role Chindia plays in the rise of fuel prices - But
do BillyBob in China SallySue in India pay the same price we pay here?
i.e. $3.00+/gal?

If not, why not? Supply demand should be equal everywhere, right? And if
yes, I would think $3+/gal. would slow their growth dramatically given the
standard of living. or maybe those who can afford to buy cars aren't
affected by the cost?

What am I missing?

Re: [MBZ] Diesel/gas prices

2007-11-11 Thread Allan Streib
I have no idea what gasoline and diesel fuel prices are in China and
India. In Europe, they are roughly double what we pay here, the
difference largely being due to taxes.

Some oil producing countries (Venezuela, Middle East countries) sell
at artificially low prices domestically because the government owns
the production and it makes the citizens happy.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel/gas prices

2007-11-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
The impact China and India have on the price of oil is their rapidly
growing manufacturing base, which is growing to support US.

As far as gas prices are concerned, convince our Government to stop
taxing and start subsidising gas and we too can have lower gas prices
rotten roads an even worse deficate than we have now.

In other words, gas prices in these countries are being held lower than
actual production cost to help them grow even faster.

[MBZ] John Robbins no longer owns the fastest 2.5 turbo I have seen

2007-11-11 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
At the IowaQ, I noticed that John Robbins 2.5 was quicker than any other
2.5 I have driven. Well, after getting the rebuilt IP back in my 92, I
can say mine is faster than his, or so it seems. Yesterday I got it
running but not good. Today, I just adjusted the ip a little till it
smoothed out and sounded right. Runs fine. Dont know if its exact on
spot, but it seems fine to me. Everything is working as it should now.
Im thinking maybe the rebuilder turned up the IP just a hair.

Subaru's new turbodiesel boxer was displayed at the 2007 Frankfurt
International Motor Show, so let's have a look at some specifications.
The new engine is the world's first horizontally-opposed diesel, or
boxer engine as it's more commonly referred to.

We finally have some stats on the engine although it's still very
vague at the moment. The engine is 2.0 liter in size and puts out 147
horsepower - quoted as 110kW, incidentally the same amount as it's 2.0
liter normally aspirated petrol sibling - and 350Nm of torque. CO2
emissions level is rated at 150g/km.

Subaru's Executive Vice President Mat Nagato says the new turbodiesel
engine will make it's production car debut in the beginning of 2008.
Let's hope more stats on the engine will be revealed at the 2007 Tokyo
Motor Show. We still don't have any idea of how the torque curve of
the engine looks like.

Watch a video of the new turbodiesel boxer engine after the jump.

Mercedes has been producing M class diesels all along, just not for
resale in the US and the Tuscaloosa County Sherriff's department has
been driving them for years now. I guess its possoble that he has one of
these but its not likely.

You are correct, they are only rated at 25 MPG highway. But 25 MPG
highway is great when compared to the gas burner's mileage of 20 MPG
highway, running premium fuel only!

You can also use an oyster knife to work the w'strip into place - the blade

I suggest you take the frame, glass and w'strip to a glass shop and ask if

These days, a 42 gallon barrel of crude is about $95.
I'm stunned that I can still buy gas at the pump, taxes and all,
for less than $3.20. (but diesel is over $3.50, and kerosene
is more than that) When gas hit $3.20 in the summer of '06, I believe
crude was a bit under $80.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel/gas prices

2007-11-11 Thread Peter Frederick
Pump prices are somewhat independent of crude prices (there are other
factors, such as the upcoming demand for home heating oil that will
push diesel up quite a bit this winter) and low demand due to the end
of the summer driving season.

That notwithstanding, pump prices will lag from 30 to 60 days changes
in crude prices, since the crude is paid for essentially when it leaves
the ground, and it takes a month or two for it to arrive at the
refinery, get refined, then shipped to the service station.

Prices will go up some more, $3.50 or so for regular is my purely seat
of the pants estimate, near $4 for diesel in the cold months.

[MBZ] Soy Oil

I just stopped by Sams Club priced soy oil.

$15.78 - 35# soy oil

This comes to 5.8 gallons, based on my unscientific bathroom scale.

At 5.8 gallons, 35#'s works out to $2.70 / gallon.

Plus 8% local sales tax = $2.92 / gallon.

Diesel is running around $3.50 / gallon around here.

Now I'm wondering how a 50/50 or 80/20 mix will run in my 300SDL.

Re: [MBZ] Soy Oil

2007-11-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
Ed,

I just weighed a gallon of veggi oil it came to 6 pounds. 35 pounds / 6
pounds = 5.833 gallons.

Is K1 lighter or heavier than veggi oil?

For that matter, does anyone know what 1 gallon of soy oil really weights?

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

 $15.78 - 35# soy oil

This comes to 5.8 gallons, based on my unscientific bathroom scale.

At 5.8 gallons, 35#'s works out to $2.70 / gallon.

 Plus 8% local sales tax = $2.92 / gallon.

Diesel is running around $3.50 / gallon around here.

Now I'm wondering how a 50/50 or 80/20 mix will run in my 300SDL.

i'm of the opinion that this is going to end up being a disaster, starting
with regular people who now have to pay $400 a month to heat their home that
they bought and can't afford and another $400 a month to drive their car
that they can't afford either.

i'm not gonna light my furnace till december if at all. i'm working from
home. i've stopped using the washer and dryer. i'm buying just about
everything via mail order. i'm looking into climate proof housing out of
recycled materials. i'll probably join the recycled fuel crowd as well
before long.

Re: [MBZ] Soy Oil

2007-11-11 Thread dave walton
I run 50/50 waste canola oil and diesel all winter in Cleveland, Ohio.
It's good to at least -5F. The 87SDL ran 100% WVO all summer with no
mods to the car whatsoever.

 Thanks,

Makes sense, as I was pretty sure a 35lb tote was less than 5 gallons.

Drat! I still think there is room to go on mine... At a minimum I'm

Probably more along the lines of adjusting out all the wear from age

I was working on Brunnhilde yesterday in the driveway, and a neighbor
down the street came by walking his dog.  We got talking about Benz
diesels, he has an 06 M diesel he thinks is tremendously great -- he
says it gets 43mpg on the highway.

He is reading the instant mileage readout on the dash which can show numbers
like this when on cruise on level ground. My departed C320's readout has shown
32mpg at 60mph on cruise with no wind. In real life it seldom got into the
26s, computed properly.

He doesn't know how the system works.

I get the idea that the system in Ford Lariat pickups calculates the fuel
consumption from the injector firing data, subtracts 20%, and divides it
into the vehicle distance sensor reading. I used to drive a 1987 Lebaron
with trip computer, could run 36 on the hwy, occasionally 32-34 cumulative
if I drove carefully for a whole tank, and it matched up reasonably well
with fillup calculations.

Took a contract this summer which requires a 50 mi. r/t commute each day.
The last three miles is the steepest state maintained road in the state.
It's a difficult climb on most vehicles to 4,500 ft. and just as difficult
on the brakes descending.

I had lots of faith in the ole 300D. Even with a/c running it tools right
along climbing the grade. Temp gauge stays in a good range even though low
gear and low spped negotiating hairpin curves. The motor and trans holds
back on the descent unlike others who are replacing brake pads every month.

Anyway, a perk is that I agreed to accept the WVO from the park (a favor
to the company considering the remote location). The used soy oil is good
quality. The food service pre-filters it while warm and replaces it into the
35# containers. Eight containers I haul off each week equals just about 40
ga.

Intention was to alter one of the cars with a two tank system. I decided
instead to build a processor at home and remove the glycerin. (Was planning
to build an Appleseed processor as I'd planned to replace the hot water
heater at home anyway.) Lye was no problem as another hobby is I make my own
soap. I order sodium hydroxide by the case anyway.

Thing was, I started looking into the cost of methanol and the thought of
having a 55 ga. drum of it sitting in the garage.

Solution? I shared samples of some of my homemade lye soap with management
and they suggested I produce it for the mercantile outlets.

It's win win. Though the price of diesel has climbed from $2.899 to $3.409
in the past months, a gallon of the WVO yields about 30 bars of soap each
netting the cost of a gallon of fuel.

will look out for Bosio

Subject: [MBZ] Bosch Nozzles

Whent to my local Mercedes Dealer and bought new nozzles DNSOD-265 for
the W124 300D ( non turbo ) and these to my horror are made in India.
Upon opening the sealed capsule they came in I see under magnification
that its covered in dirt and visible machining marks. Spray is also poor
as is opening pressure which has dropped 1500 kpa. Then phoned the local
Bosch dealer and they also only sell the Indian version. Can one still
get 265's made in Europe?

First run of W140s, except the electronics.

The last really good ones were the W124 chassis, KE-Jet models.

The newer ones suffer from lousy sheet metal and poor crash protection.

As the owner of 2 G's I under stand your sentiment, however the current
G's ( G55 etc cannot really be called a G , with all that electronics
etc you will too scared to venter into Africa as the originals G's do so
well. Furthur the car newer started as a Mercdedes ( Was a joint venture
with Steyr-puch ) so its pedigree is somewhat not pure.

The last real mercedes still being made today, if you want to be a
purist, is the G-wagen.

I little trivia that I've told to the list several times:

I remember when I was a kid in Germany and the new square line came out.
That's the 114 / 115 body for those who don't know.

My parents their friends were all complaining it's not a real
Mercedes, it doesn't have the Mercedes grill, it will never sell,
they are cheap Mercedes imitations, the quality isn't the same, etc,
etc, etc. And some swore to never buy a Mercedes again - they did.

Then the replacement for the 108 / 109 body came out in 1972 and guess
what? It was the same complaints all over again.

Re: [MBZ] What was the last real Mercedes?

2007-11-11 Thread Peter Merle
I also have both 123 and 124 diesels and although the 124 is fancier and
more smooth I actually prefer the 123. There is a lot more plastic in
the 124 - see for instance the fuel line clips and parts are not made as
well eg fuel lines are much thinner and more finiky. Complexity is a lot
higher in w124 with electric cooloant pump, electronc idel speed ,
electroic climate control etc etc

When this thread started my 1st response, without giving it any
thought
at all, was the W108 is all it's variants - incl the 109 and 111.
Especially the late production 280SEL with the 6 cyl FI engine although
the
4.5 V8 is very high on the list.

Then, I started thinking about my 123 and 124 (I've been lucky
enough to
have one of each) - both are amazing cars with few quality problems.
Not
many -- Of course, we're comparing gas to diesels -

I'd like to try a new S class - as T Hargrave suggested - I'll bet
it's
awesome. But I wouldn't want to have to pay for its maintanence after
it's
5 or 10 years old - which is my yardstick for labelling something
Great in
terms of something I might buy. As for as everyone complaining whenever
a
new model comes out - I think that behaviour is universal - When the
Porsche
911 was introduced in 1963 the 356 group said they were Real Porsches,

same thing happened again and agin as new series were introduced. And
when,
God,forbid, a front engine potential 911 replacement should come out,
stand
back and watch the arrows fly.

IMHO, MB is growing with the industry - changing to stay
competitive.
Again - Watching old video of the Porsche assy lines in the 50s compared
to
the lines of today and the so-called Hand Built Porsches are called
such
with a wink. Sure, they are more Hands-On that your typical CHevy but
new
ones could never be called Hand-Built in the tradition of the 356s.

As someone once said, It's all relative.
