I saw a F250 Powerstroke go for a walk once on a lightly sloped parking lot.
We came out of the store, and it was about six feet farther back than we
left it. I wasn't driving, but I'm pretty sure it could not have been in
creeper or reverse. The owner's driveway is steeper than that parking lot
and as far as I know it's never done that at home. After my Horizon hit
about 180,000 miles it would do that in reverse at the boat ramp, about one
compression stroke every 20 seconds. Before the cylinders started leaking
down the engine held the car and the boat on that ramp just fine.

Re: [MBZ] What is the current thinking on internal engine cleaners?

2007-11-26 Thread LarryT
Synthetic - change it at regular intervals and drive it at high speeds
(60-70 or more) for long distances. Our 91 had carbon build up - I also put
some stuff called Ferox 230 from www.ferox230sales.com - bought 4 bottles of
concentrate specfically designed to break loose carbon. Each bottle treated
6 tanks od diesel IIRC. Worked like a charm. No more carbon. ;-)

As far as sludge, the synthetic oil (I like Mobil 1) will clean it out over
the course of 2 or 3 oil changes. But high speed drives will help an engine
tremendously. Also, if the engine suffers from sludge buildup the AT
probably does also - again, Mobil 1 ATF is the answer - change it every 30K
miles along with the filter -

Good luck -

2007-11-26 Thread LarryT
Hi Loren,
Agree with everything you said. My 78 240D starts instantly in all
weather -- but the MB AT is a poor excuse for a transmission. A 5 speed
would be wonderful - even a 4 speed considering the torque these engines
have - would be much better than the AT. You're right about the ride - it
rides like the luxury car it is -

I've considered changing the engine/tranny out for a 300D turbo with manual
tranny if I could find one since the body and interior are in good
condition. Oh well - like everyone else - always wanting something else -

planning to try again to get the blasted 81 only auto trans to
shift right. I put the battery charger on for a while, turned the
key, it glowed and took off on the first cyl to hit the power
stroke. It makes me remember why I love the cast iron 4 cyl engines
so much. Look, it has a real radiator! (even if the tanks are
plastic) No fancy electronics. With its new rear suspension and new
Bilsteins all around, it rides and drives nice. If it just had a
real 5 speed in place of the stupid auto, and if it only had a
turbo It would really be the little engine that could. I never
could understand why they put a turbo on the 617 but not the 616,
which really could benefit form the boost. (literally and figuratively)

Perhaps the connections where the lines that go to the AT cooler are loose?
They connect at the engine/tranny. Also, the dipstick tube attaches to the

After being gone for 4 days, I returned home tonight and saw a 5'
long puddle under the 87 300D. It appears to be ATF, although there
is no red color apparent in the dab I picked up with my finger. Last
summer it was puking ATF at the rate of a qt to 50 miles from the
front of the trans. Then it just quit leaking. This puddle seems
to originate from the front of the trans/ rear of the engine.

Does anyone have any ideas? In the summer it seemed to leak when the
car was running, not sitting. Now it leaks while sitting. Probably
 will leak when running also.

My only inexpensive hope is that maybe the oil pan gasket is leaking
on the trans. Not sure why the oil slick does not appear red. I
suppose unless anyone else has great suggestions, I should change the
trans fluid and filter and gasket, and see if it helps any.

Re: [MBZ] best drainage strategy

2007-11-26 Thread Curt Raymond

I think you miss my point. If I leave my car overnight, drain in the morning,
put in new oil and go on my way how is that one more cold start?

If you can't prove beyond a resonable doubt (like do side by side tests, then
breakdown each engine and measure and find one method superior) its all theory.

As I said before in all likelyhood it doesn't matter spit either way. Lets
assume the hot method results in 100 extra miles due to reduced wear per-oil
change. Thats going to work out to what 20,000 over the life of the car? Most
people don't keep their cars that long.
In which case my changing the oil every 10,000 miles (analysis says its safe)
will result in even LESS wear...

I think Yakima has more older-MB-correct stuff than Thule, but I could be
making that up.
Yakima has worked well for me.

[MBZ] OT: electronics question

2007-11-26 Thread Allan Streib
There seems to be some good knowledge of electronics on this list, so
thought I'd ask for some help

I was given a treadmill, it works except the speed control runs away
over about 4 mph. In other words, you can set a speed from 0 - 4 mph,
much above that it just goes full speed (about 12 mph). The speed
adjustment is a potentiometer, which is connected to some other
circuitry down near the drive motor. All three terminals of the pot
are wired.

The treadmill has been stored for a couple of years in a non-climate
controlled storage trailer.

My thought is that since it's the only moving part in the circuit, the
potentiometer is likely the culpirt. Easy enough to change it out to
be sure -- any reason to think it's something else?

If you were parked on a steep enough hill it will start to roll back a
little. When I first started driving before I got my first car I drove
my dads old 76 Ford F100 with a 3 on the tree. On a steep hill it would
roll back slightly. We are not talking sudden rolling, it would just
start to creep back.

I have always been puzzelled how a car can continiously by held in

fwd and then start a runway. This does not seem to happen though. Any
 thoughts on the physics involved?

yes, the 616 is not a turbo engine Why not a factory Turbo 616? I'm

IH had a turbo kit for the 4 cyl scout also. I'd be more confident

with the 300D turbo, you sacrifice mileage, the best thing about the

Agree with everything you said. My 78 240D starts instantly in all

have - would be much better than the AT. You're right about the ride - it
rides like the luxury car it is -

I've considered changing the engine/tranny out for a 300D turbo with manual
tranny if I could find one since the body and interior are in good
condition. Oh well - like everyone else - always wanting something else -

Re: [MBZ] Parking car in gear

2007-11-26 Thread Bill Ringgold
I saw something like that in Akron about 35 years ago on a sloped parking lot.
About 15 cars slid out of their spaces when the owners parked warm tires on an
iced lot. Interesting to drive through. I don't think compression leak-down
had anything to do with that one.
BillR

[MBZ] Projekt-Wagen 2 w/ ALDA interchangeability question

2007-11-26 Thread Christopher McCann
Found a 1980 300SD W116 with usual problems - window seals, a/c, etc. The big
one was extremely slow acceleration (ALDA is ruined and I also suspect the
turbo switchover valve and hose going to it (looks plugged). $1,000 obo, he
took my first offer of $750. He was able to drive it to my house and put $20 in
fuel in it to boot. Almost no rust, very nice - needs new dash. 155K miles. He
had injectors rebuilt, new filters, installed water filter, new lift and primer
pump, new glow plugs. Started on 4th crank with no block heater at 25 degrees.
Started right up last night at 45, so no problems there. This one should be fun.

Going to the PNP after work to get all the pieces we need off the W115 there
before it goes to the crusher.

QUESTION: Is an ALDA off any turbo OM617 interchangeable with any other turbo
OM617?

Thanks!

Chris

weather -- but the MB AT is a poor excuse for a transmission. A 5 speed
would be wonderful - even a 4 speed considering the torque these engines
have - would be much better than the AT. You're right about the ride - it
rides like the luxury car it is -

I've considered changing the engine/tranny out for a 300D turbo with
manual
tranny if I could find one since the body and interior are in good
condition. Oh well - like everyone else - always wanting something else -

Later -

My trusty 240D has set idly since about March or so when I was
planning to try again to get the blasted 81 only auto trans to
shift right.
(literally and
  figuratively)

I am yet again thankful that I am able to buy parts from Rusty.

His prices for the ignition lock I recently purchased are $ 208.00 retail
and $ 156.93 our price.

I recently got an email from Rock Auto, the place where I bought the Bosch
rubber caps to fix vacuum door lock actuators, reminding me of a discount
coupon that would soon expire. I went to their site and looked at prices
for parts for our '82 240D/3.0 (admittedly, their focus is domestic and
not foreign, but ...) and found that their selling price for the same part
is $336.79!

To be fair, they do list the MANN Part # PF10551X oil filter for $7.51
while Rusty lists a Mann filter for $ 8.81. They also list MANN Part
#WK716 Fuel Filter: Spin on for $6.37 while Rusty lists Fuel Filter Mahle
for $7.77 and Fuel Filter Bosch for $8.19. Comparing apples to apples,
however, Rock Auto lists BOSCH Part #74012 {Fuel Filter #1457434153}
Secondary fuel filter for $9.54.

For air filters, Rusty is cheaper at $11.44 versus Rock Auto's $11.61.

For wheel lug bolts, Rusty lists, Lug Bolt Febi (steel wheel) $ 1.51, and,
Lug Bolt Febi (alloy wheel) $ 3.47. Rock Auto lists FEBI Part #2014010270
{Wheel Bolt For steel wheel} $1.00 and FEBI Part # 1264010670F {Wheel Bolt
For alloy wheel #1264010670} $2.54.

Interesting.

Re: [MBZ] Parking car in gear

2007-11-26 Thread Timothy Robinson
That happens all the time here in the mountains. Four brakes engaged on iced
parking lot might hold the vehicle but just the drive wheels in park, you
shut the car door and the car slides away like a hockey puck.

The owner's manual on the 300D gives emergency instructions on how to jump
start the car if necessary by coasting it downgrade. This can be done with
the automatic transmission in the Benz not just manual trans.

About 15 cars slid out of their spaces when the owners parked warm tires on an

had anything to do with that one.

I saw a F250 Powerstroke go for a walk once on a lightly sloped parking
 lot.

My only complaint about the 240D is the lack of acceleration - especially in

Re: [MBZ] Oil draining and sucking

2007-11-26 Thread R A Bennell
Yesterday made me wish my car was slightly newer. My 115 has to have the filter
element changed from underneath. I
waited a bit too long ( I have changed the oil at Halloween the past couple of
years when I put it away for winter)
and the weather has turned cold here - about 5F yesterday. I plugged it in for
a bit and got it warm enough to
start up. Let it idle long enough to come up to temperature and then messed
about with the coolant before doing the
oil. I guess I let it cool a little too much as the oil took forever to drain
out of the oil pan. The main amount
came out like it should but then it just trickled out for a half an hour. I
finally got tired of waiting and put
the plug back in so I could pull the filter. Got that out and a new one in the
canister etc. Then ran into trouble
trying to get the darned thing back on the car. Too tight under there. I'm
getting old and fat and I finally had to
give up and haul out the floor jack to give myself a bit more room. Still
couldn't get the filter to start.
Difficult to do under there. By now it was supper time. Dark and cold and
although I was in the garage, I had the
big door open as I had moved the car back to give myself a bit more space at
the front. I was struggling with it
when my wife came out and said that the rest of them were tired of holding off
dinner waiting for me. I was chilled
to the bone and getting angry so I gave up. Just lowered it off of the jack and
pushed it back into the garage. So
right now, I have it sitting there with no oil in the pan, no filter on the
car, the filter stuff in a garbage bag
as it is oily and dirty, a pan of used oil sitting under the fuel tank at the
back and perhaps little chance of
revisiting this mess before the weather warms in April or May. So, right now,
I am wishing I had the engine with
the filter that loads from the top and a garage that I could heat enough to
make winter work bearable. Supposed to
be -4F tonight- snowing as I write this - ground is white and not likely to
change prior to spring now.

Go rent one of those big space heaters that looks like a jet engine and
turn it towards the car, let it go for 15 min or so, will warm up the
garage a bit too, and you in it. Then finish up and take the heater
back, feeling more relaxed and calmer.

I live in Texas now so don't have to deal with that sort of thing much
any more, but when I lived near Boston, I would occasionally have to
resort to that approach. Cheap money.

Has anyone tried to remove the fill plug on a 91 300D 2.5?Would really

Re: [MBZ] Oil draining and sucking

2007-11-26 Thread R A Bennell
I have one of those electric construction heaters with a coil and a fan in the
middle. However, my garage is
uninsulated and the ceiling is open to a big attic. I need to close the ceiling
off and put some insulation in.
Then I could probably warm it sufficiently to work in there a bit when I needed
to. Wouldn't be hot but does not
need to be. A new garage door wouldn't hurt either since mine is metal and not
insulated.

Just another one of those projects that has been on the list for many years.
When it is warm enough to work on it,
one does not and when it is too cold, one wishes one had done so. I used to be
tougher too. I can recall changing
the thermostat in my wife's car when it was -25F with a floodlight bulb in a
socket hung over my hands to keep them
from freezing. I think now I would just take it too a garage and have it done
but a few years back I did it all
myself.

Re: [MBZ] Parking car in gear

2007-11-26 Thread Hendrik Fay
Auto boxes have a parking engagement device, however I STRONGLY
recommend that everyone get in the habit of using the hand brake, even
on flat ground.
My Mum had an experience recently whereby the car chased her because she
didn't put the car in P properly and either she did not pull on the hand
brake hard enough (easy to do on a RHD 201 because the hand brake is
close to the passenger seat and you sort of have to lean over to pull it
on hard) or did not use it at all. Luckily the car missed her by a
couple of feet but it could have been very nasty.
I recommend using P on autos all the time, engage hand brake and then
place in P, if the hand brake is working properly the vehicles weight
should not rest against the internal gearbox stop but that internal stop
is a fail safe in case your hand brake lets go for whatever reason.
There is absolutely no reason not to place the auto in P, they are
designed to do this.
It is things like this 'when on a hill/slope, e-brake and neutral with
no park' stuff that makes me a great believer in making new drivers take
professional lessons so they don't pick up bad habits from 'experienced'
drivers. Pro driving instructors are best placed to teach the ins and
outs of motoring.

Re: [MBZ] Cruise Control W124

2007-11-26 Thread Peter Frederick
Check the stop lamp bulbs first, replace if old (tungsten on the bulb
insides). The CC grounds via the stop lamp bulbs, so it disengages
when there is 12 V on the filaments (while stopping). A bad filament
or too much resistance (thin filament) can keep the CC from working.

However, if it drops of occasionally, but comes back when re-engaged or
by itself, the usual culprit is a bad amplifier -- the solder cracks
and the servo doesn't get engaged.

Good idea to have someone check out the servo before replacing the
amplifier, though -- a bad servo will promptly eat a new $450
amplifier!

If the operating lever is floppy, you need a new switch, too.

these.
The winter tire is one that has a finer tread and sipes to give traction
on hard snoe and ice.
We've used Blizaaks (Jetta and now on two Smarts), X-ice on a 123, Hak 1's
with studs on a 124, Toyo GO+ on a 123 wagon and on a Toyota Tercel, and
Goodyear Ultragrip Ice on a 123.
My son was on a throughway, cruising at a steady speed, did a 360 and will
never buy X-ice again. We've had excellent service from the Toyo's and the
Goodyear. The Hak's are OK but nothing exceptional. I would shop for price
for the Toyos or Goodyears.
Oh yeah, somewhere in there, we had Yokohama's on the Jetta. Nothing to
write home about.
By the bye. Do you use a winter tire that is more than 50% worn? If not,
Blizaaks. Undoubtedly the best.

Zonon:
Thanks for sharing your experience. That is info I need.

I do intend to use winter tires beyond 50% worn - as winter tires. Maybe I
am spoiled and my expectations are unrealistic.
But my old Nokian NRW's were very effective winter tires until they got
close to bald. In about the 5th winter those tires had more than 40 k miles
on them. That year we had a bad pre-Christmas snow storm. My E300D with
those Nokian Haks took me hundreds of sure footed miles through that storm.
A day after the storm, I was the first vehicle to travel down some city back
streets where the snow was as deep as the bottom of my car. It went down
those streets like a bulldozer. Maybe a 124 with worn winter tires is not
supposed to be able to do that. But this car did it. And I want another
set of tires that can do that.

The last two winters, I've used Nokian WR's, which I plan to leave on my
son's 124. The WR's are better than most all-season tires and they work
well in the summer. But for all out winter performance, they can't touch
the old NRW's.

I have not owned any other type of winter tires since a couple decades ago
when I mounted snow tires on the back wheels of my VW bug and my MB
114/8. With all season radials, my 124 was so bad on snow that I had to do
something, so I tried Nokians Haks.

The X-Ice reviews on the internet seem to run the extremes. The owners
either loved or hated them.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: [MBZ] best drainage strategy

2007-11-26 Thread Hendrik Fay
You obviously have not been paying attention have you, the problem is
that the oil pump takes a few seconds to prime and during this time
there is no oil circulating. If you leave the car overnight more oil
will drain off the internals and leave them exposed to harsh metal on
metal action.
That is why I recommend drain hot to get as much oil out as quickly as
possible, change filter, fill with fresh oil and start the motor. This
leaves a little oil on the internals to help protect them during the
time the oil pump primes up.
As an example then engine in my 230E is getting a bit tired and the
valve train likes to rattle a bit in the morning before the oil gets up
there, however doing an oil change my way there is no/very little rattle
while the oil pump primes because there is a coating of oil on the
lifters. Doing it your way the lifters would rattle for a good 5
seconds. That's my theory.
However as stated before you are entitled to do an oil change any which
way you see fit.
Sure you may be right and either way you gain very little in the way of
engine life but I like to do things to the best of my ability and not
just do what's easy. Doing things the easy and perhaps incorrect way
leads to laziness, mediocrity and loss of self esteem. It's like a
mediocre driver instruction system leads to mediocre drivers, sure some
are better than others because they taking driving seriously.

Curt Raymond wrote:
I think you miss my point. If I leave my car overnight, drain in the morning,
put in new oil and go on my way how is that one more cold start?

If you can't prove beyond a resonable doubt (like do side by side tests, then
breakdown each engine and measure and find one method superior) its all
 theory.

My employer at the Saab shop lost a parking pawl about 20 years ago.
He left the car in the handicap spot closest to the store, flat parking
lot, lever in 'P', handbrake off. A delivery truck backed into his car,
no obvious bumper damage, but the Borg-Warner box didn't like it at all.
Saab parking brakes in that era (Girling front disk parking/service brakes)
could lock the front wheels with ease. If he'd set the brake, there's
no way the tranny would have been damaged.

As for the suggestion to leave the lever in neutral so that the lever
wouldn't get stuck in 'P' if the parking brake didn't hold on a hill,
would you rather return to your car to find tension on the parking
pawl, or perhaps it's better to find your car not where you left it
if the p-brake doesn't hold? The 'P' on the tranny is there for
redundancy in case the p-brake fails. Using it *except* when on a
hill where it might be useful is silly.

I have one of those electric construction heaters with a coil and a fan in
the middle. However, my garage is
uninsulated and the ceiling is open to a big attic. I need to close the
ceiling off and put some insulation in.
Then I could probably warm it sufficiently to work in there a bit when I
needed to. Wouldn't be hot but does not
need to be. A new garage door wouldn't hurt either since mine is metal and
 not insulated.

Just another one of those projects that has been on the list for many
years. When it is warm enough to work on it,
one does not and when it is too cold, one wishes one had done so. I used
to be tougher too. I can recall changing

Isn't there also pressure against a pin/stop of some sort?
I was always taught to use park with e-brake. And, when on a hill/slope,
e-brake and neutral with no park.

 Taught by whom?

autozone sells a set of large allen sockets - 12, 14 and 16mm, IIRC.
They're $10 for the set. the 14mm one fits the rear diff and the manual
gearbox drain plugs. the 12mm one fits the manual transmission drain plug
on a classic Saab 900. Worth their weight in silver.

beautiful tool! I have a lot of Hazets unusual tools - VW oil cooler
wrench, tire irons, and some other special tools. I gotta find one of
 the
 rear axle wrenches!

Thx ;-) Will get the fluid changed ASAP!

Try Hazet Oil Service Wrench #2567-1 it's da bomb.
  Fred Moir

Tried to have a local shop replace my rear axle fluid recently. His
 allen
wrench would not clear the other stuff around the rear axle and engage
 the
socket properly. So I drive there with my tools and we tried mine -
 but
 the
only one I had in a 14mmm IIRC was a standard L wrench.

Has anyone tried to remove the fill plug on a 91 300D 2.5?Would
 really
like to put the Mobil 1 Synthetic I have in the axle -

Any ideas about what kind of Allen Wrench *will work? Maybe a 14mm
 stub
 of
allen into a socket with a universal?

 Thx -

Re: [MBZ] Cruise Control W124

2007-11-26 Thread LarryT
Thx Peter --
I'll check the bulbs - it dropped out maybe once or twice a month - but
yesterday it stopped completely and did not re-engage.

Hopefully it's not the amp. The operating stalk is like new. no play at
all. Hopefully new bulbs will help - I have a supply of Osram - I believe
they are OE.

Thx again for the info -

 Peter

Re: [MBZ] Rear Axle Fluid Change and the tools to do a good job

2007-11-26 Thread Hendrik Fay
I bought a set of allen sockets in kit form:
http://www.transquip.com.au/product.aspx?ID=2931PARENT=324
http://www.kctools.com.au/images/2005_Catalogue_jpegs/KC%20TOOLS%20Catalogue/slides/page24.html
and they are the ducks guts for working on MB's and also I had a Bosch
Dremel type tool break down and thanks to the tamper-proof bits in the
kit could pull it apart and fix it.
Nothing quite like having proper tools for working on cars.
