Re: [MBZ] M119 idle control/cruise actuator E420
I don't know the answer, but my guess is that the actuators were changed to match changes in the controlling circuitry, or that the supplier just had a better idea for producing them at a lower cost and substituted the new part in. However, I think those cases are just listed as superceded parts in the EPC, not unique parts per engine number. I have a similar question about the vacuum pump on my '90 602 - the EPC (and Rusty's catalog) call for a different VP for this year, certain engine number range, and it's ~ $150 more than the pumps before and after it. Could I use the less expensive pump??? On Dec 30, 2007 8:27 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Im sure nobody here knows, but thought i would ask anyway. It's possible that the valves would survive as they are vertical to the piston crowns. However there is the question of compressed (stunted) valves and the side push allowed by loose guides. Measure twice and pray? As the cam broke, its hollow and liable to break if miss-torqued, the cam bearings will also need scrutiny. I wouldn't put another engine in it, fix the original one and it will be worth more. That and the engine may well be a high compression one as compared to the ones that where build for the US market. If you are going the new engine route I would suggest you find a wrecked SL or SLC and swap over, something like a 380 or 450 would be good. [MBZ] M119 idle control/cruise actuator E420

One up to a certain engine, then one past a certain engine (without ASR, there are others with ASR). What is the difference between the 2? Re: [MBZ] The death of high fidelity
I know the controllers. It's amazing how far storage has come. When I bought my ST225, it was huge at 20 MB (not 20 GB, for those who have not been involved in computers very long). Then I upgraded to a full height 40 MB ST251! My every day use cheap camera has a 512 MB Sandisk memory card, not at all large by today's standards! Won't that be a bit tricky to turn the engine over with both valves closed? I suspect that you'll be able to see the bent valves by the height of the valve stems once the cam's out. Re: [MBZ] 1967 200D labor of love
Yes, before I close up the rocker panels, I coat the inside with a rust inhibitor type paint. On the drivers side, I replaced the whole rocker so it was easy to coat but on the passenger side, it's a bit better so I'm patching the rocker rather than replacing it entirely. Fortunately(?), the holes are big enough that I can get in there and clean it up and then slop the paint around. By the time I am done, I will have coated the whole bottom of the car and all the parts where rust of any type is visible. I'm doing it primarily with a paint brush. (I won't use a paint brush for the outside!) I don't weld around the whole panel that I am replacing for a couple reasons. First, continuous welding causes warping. Second, it is plenty strong enough by tacking every few inches. Third, a lot of the stuff that I am welding to isn't always real strong. I typically cut out anything that is weak but the old metal isn't as easy to weld to as the new stuff - quite easy to blow holes if you aren't careful. Fourth, the original rocker panels are not continuous welded - they are tack welded every few inches. So, I tack it so that it is strong. Then I grind it down a bit, then put on some seam sealer to close the all the holes that are left. Next, I'll apply some bondo in places that I want to look pretty and will be painting the car color. Inside the wheel wells, underneath and the inside, I'll put on some high build rockerguard type coating. That will nicely hide my bad welding! .. I read somewhere there is a market for used cell phones (well I'm not sure you get paid for them). Apparently they are refurbished or recycled. If refurbished they are then sold into third world countries where cell phones are likely the only way to get phone service. See other diesel lists notes about STEALING copper wire, aka telephone lines Let's see NYTimes archives... Ah yes, link to http://www.recellular.com/recycling/donatePhones.asp mmm even a program to get phones to usa military folks, and Wal-mart takes them (who knew)... Re: [MBZ] Photography
I've got a now very battered Fuji 2650 2MP. Its been across the country with me, umm 5 times now. Down to Florida umm, 5 or 6 times I forget. Gone to camp times without count. I've taken pictures from planes, boats, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. One time I was taking a picture of another snowmobiler at ~50mph and I dropped it. When I went back to get it I drove over it by accident in the dark. The screen cracked when I dropped it from the 2nd floor balcony of a hotel room. It still works pretty well although the flash takes a long time to charge and its hard on batteries. I'd asked my folks for a replacement 5MP for Christmas but haven't seen them yet. -Curt Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2007 18:18:53 -0500 From: "Gary Hurst" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] Photography, was - The death of high fidelity To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 i'm on my 3rd one. this last one is a 5.1 megapixel tiny shirt pocket size one. the first one was a 1 megapixel job that i still have that was shaped like an ordinary camera. i bought it new for 50 bucks. then i bought a new one in the same style as that one for 150, but that one was quickly lost/stolen. teh shirt pocket one was like 30 bucks on ebay. it was sold by one of those distressed electronic floor model liquidator types with no promise regarding performance. i bought a $5 new battery and it works fine. I checked out the thermistor yesterday and found it to be good. The wire going from the sensor to the gauge was no good, as well as the sensor itself. I ran a new wire, as opposed to trying to find the break, and went to pull-a-part today where I bought 3 sensors. (as well as a BUNCH of other stuff)I will test them tonight, when my wife is not looking (need the pan on the stove with boiling water) and then install if good. The 3 I bought are all different so I need to compare to the one in the car. One is 100 to 107, one is 105 to 115 and one is 100 to 110. Results to follow. Too bad you had so much trouble isolating this problem. The OEM foam pipe deteriorates fairly quickly. Mine was less than 4 years old and it crumbled into sticky chunks when I bumped it while changing the ACC amp. It's a tight fit, but most folks recommend replacing the OEM foam tube with a piece of foam pipe insulation from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It's cheap and pretty durable. Try a different resolution, the monitor has native resolutions at which it will look best, if it has to interpolate pixels it'll get fuzzy. If its a 16x9 monitor your old video card may just not be up to the job. On an old mac thats pretty much tough tiddlies. Back in the day when firewire video capture had just come out we used to get alot of people who would use firewire for deck control and audio and pick up the video through s-video. Some corrections & additions: Vacuum tubes will & do clip. A vacuum tube is a voltage controlled device while a transistor is a current controlled device and either can be driven to clip. Clipping is nothing more than the device being turned all the way on or off before the input signal reaches full potential. Transisitor clipping is sharper than vacuum tube clipping. Vacuum tube amps distort more than transistor amps and the vacuum tube distortion is interpreted as a "warmer sound". Transistor amp manufacturers have not been able to duplicate this distortion because it's mechanical - it's in the physical tube design itself. I can still hear the difference in the old radios & amps I work on today. You believe the sound from a vacuum tube amp is "higher quality" because it actually sounds better. Put a scope on the output of a tube amp & a transistor amp and compare the difference and it's obvious that the transistor amp output is cleaner. Tom www.kegkits.com - Never miss a thing. Re: [MBZ] OT, computer supplies
I'm not sure I understand the question, are you saying going from a laptop 2.5" ATA (ie. PATA or IDE) to a desktop SATA? Not always an apples to apples conversion. Many (most?) laptop drives are 5400rpm (some older drives are even 4300) while many (again most?) desktop drives are 7200rpm. Random reads on a 7200rpm drives will be much faster. I'd venture to say that in most cases you'll see a larger speed bump going from a 5400rpm drive to a 7200 because its the seek speed that is lacking not transfer rate. -Curt Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2007 11:32:54 -0700 From: Craig McCluskey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT, computer supplies To: Mercedes Discussion List Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII On Sat, 29 Dec 2007 08:17:46 -0800 (PST) LWB250 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I would agree with Curt, as I have a laptop (15" MBP > 2.0Ghz C2D, 2G RAM) that has a SATA drive in it, and I > don't see a significant difference in access speeds > over my former 15" G4 1.8Ghz that used ATA. Re: [MBZ] Brain picking: Moving switches off lower part of 123 console
Thanks for sharing your experience, Jim. It gives me confidence. The new switch is ordered, and it can go on the shelf with some other stuff I have ratholed against possible future need. Someone asked me if I intended to keep/drive the Benz until my son takes it away from me, and I said yes. That's how I'm thinking. I have a head gasket set, a starter, and alternator, a radiator, and many small parts ratholed. Fourway switch will fit right in. I actually have a pretty intense electrical day planned for January 1 - when I intend to buff all the contacts in the fuse box and buff and install new fuses. According to some of what I've read, that ought to fix some electrical problems, maybe inclucing some I don't even know I have. Bought a new Dremel in a box with a flex shaft and two cup brushes for this project. As an indication of how important I think it is, my usual stle wouild be to try to buy one really cheap at a pawnshop. I just marched into the tool place and bought this one. BTDT (?) Goes past me. Wow! You have your work cut out for you; especially at the bottom of the left rear door. Before and after pictures will be interesting. I had the same year/model car and did work on the fender. The metal was supposed to be "shrunk" after repair by using a special tool that made corrugations which were then filled in. Don't know how successful the shrinking was, but the fender held up fine to the end. Did you run complete beads around the replacement panels, or leave them tacked in place, and sealed them with body filler? -- OK Don, KD5NRO Norman, OK "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics." -Benjamin Disraeli and/or Mark Twain '90 300D, '87 300SDL, '81 240D, '78 450SLC, '97 Ply Grand Voyager ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] The Death of High Fidelity
78s were acoustical until around 1925 IIRC, and then switched over to electrical. The electrical 78 rpm recordings have excellent sound quality, if you don't mind a little surface noise. (the surface noise on 78s from the late 30s is nearly inaudible);) I have tons of wonderful old performances that predate the advance to 33 rpm and hi fi, and they are priceless in terms of the artistry and technical wizardry of the likes of Rachmaninoff, Artur Schnabel, and Josef Hofmann. Among the great pianists of the era, the career of Vladimir Horowitz spanned all the audio tecnhologies and fortunately he still played like a demon into his 60s and the advent of stereophonic sound. [MBZ] 1967 200D labor of love
I bought this car 3 years ago from the daughter of the original owner, Rolf Seidel. He had bought it new in Red Deer on February 8, 1968 for $5,665. (I have the Bill of Sale.) It was located on a ranch west of Red Deer, Alberta and had spent it's whole "life" there. Rolf passed away a number of years ago and his daughter, who had being storing it and driving it occasionally decided it was time to find a new home for it. We knew each other through a work connection. We were at a Christmas function and another fellow and I were talking about our old vehicles - his a 56 Chevy and mine a 51 Willys pickup (http://picasaweb.google.com/hamibob/WillysTruck) She mentioned that she had an old car she was wanting to sell - our ears perked up. I subsequently went and looked at it, decided to buy it and then drove it home to Spruce Grove, west of Edmonton - about 2 hours. They had recently had the motor rebuilt so it drives nicely - no power, not much speed but smooth. At least that's what I remember as I haven't driven it for 3 years! Once I got it in the workshop, I discovered that the rust was quite a bit worse than what I originally thought (isn't it always!). I worked on it a bunch when I first got it and then have not been too motivated to do much until the last couple weeks. Now, I'm moving nicely in getting the rusty metal cut out, fabricating new pieces, welding them in and getting it ready to paint. I thought I'd share with you where I am at. I had noticed some discussion about welding lately - I'm guessing none of you are welding like what I am doing! The pictures of my progression to date are at: http://picasaweb.google.com/hamibob/1967MercedesBenz200D Wish me luck!!. I have a friend who still plays with his 4X5 tele-graflex once in a while --- they are fun cameras. I have my grandfather's 2X3 speed graphic, but haven't cut/loaded any film for it. Now that I think about it, my first serious camera was a 2X3 Crown Graphic. The Linhof was probably a Technica - my daughter still uses her 4X5 Technica IV when she's serious about an image. [MBZ] Photography, was - The death of high fidelity
I'm impressed with the Leitz lens on my Panasonic FZ30 - as a snap shot camera. I only wish the wide angle end was wider. It's a good camera for a play toy, and will have to do until something serious comes out that both impresses me, and I can afford. I need to find a digital body to use on my slide copier - with the Zeiss 74 S-Planar, optimized for 1:1. I hate scanning negs/slides. Re: [MBZ] The death of high fidelity
The largest print we made was 4X8 feet - we turned one of the enlargers horizontally, projected the 35mm neg onto the RC paper tacked to the cork board wall opposite, and exposed for 30 minutes. Development was hand see-sawing it through trays made from wall paper trays hot glued together to make them long enough. We only made a half dozen or so prints that way - too manual. They were exhibited at the State Fair that year. Sounds like you got to work with a real darkroom artist. They are a rare breed now! We brewed up developers for Tech Pan 35mm film (back when it had a special order number and only came in 100" rolls), and played with mixing pyro paper developer form formula, but that's about it. > I just looked at a Mamiya C330 on the net & I prefer SLR. The TLR is particularly useful for IR film and and 87 (black) filter. The C330 was a much more affordable way to try out 6x6 than anything SLR-ish would have been. Jeff I didn't know he had films. "The teenagers who love you will wake up, yawn, and kill you" I feel so much more chipper. (I wear black on the outside cause black is how I feel on the inside) If a ten ton truck, crashes into us, to die by your sidelol Have you ever seen his films? I almost bought a Mamiya C330 in London the other week in Portobello road market. It was a good price 145 quid. I used to have a C220 with a couple of lenses but traded it in for my second Hasselblad. Then bought a Pentax 6X7. Had three lenses and six backs for the Blad. Tried the 500 ELM for a bit but didn't like it. Really enjoyed my 4x5 and the Deardorff 8x10 I played with for a while too. Had an even BIGGER camera. It was an Ansco (?) stat camera and shot 20X24(?) negatives!! YES, that is in inches! MASSIVE! It was 54 inches long at full bellows extension. My darkroom had a Beseler 23CII XL with a cold light head, incandescent head and two lenses. Six element Rodenstock and six element Schneider or Nikkor. Good old daystouring the middle east with my blad...shooting 100 rolls of 120 and then spending weeks in isolation...hehehe I agree that the ultimate has to be an 8x10 contact on good double weight fibre-based paper. SWEET! Is that fixer I smell? everything is still around, just not new. graflex as a company is long gone. i have a book of pictures shot in the mid to late 80s that was shot with a speed graphic. that's the latest i've seen it used professionally.
