> But wouldn't that go against "free market"?

Free markets are only free if (in addition to many
other things) there are enough independent operators
to cancel out aberrations in the management of one
of said operators. Once you've got a very limited
number of suppliers (relative to the number of consumers)
then bad things can start to happen. The very worst
thing is usually a monopoly, something that pretty much
describes a government, which is the reason that said
gov't should be limited in its sphere of activities to
only the bare minimum.

Ditto to what Kaleb said. I love mine. But maybe in the NE would sell for
more than 8K. -I know of one with 87K that recently sold on auto trader in
CT for $14,500. I have been tempted to try to sell mine for $10-12K, but
love it too much. Only beef-(other than AC evaporator leaks, etc,) I am not
that tall 5'10" but can't get seat back far enough to straighten out my
right knee when I drive on long trips.. I have tried all adjustments-but my
123's are more comfortable in front seats in that regard, even though they
are manually adjusted. I see NO downside in buying this model.

There are many pros, no cons I can think of. They are probably the best
cars MB ever made. Mine gets 33mpg, has plenty of power, drives very
nice, no problems. If it really has 45k on it I would figure it would
sell for 8k plus.

[MBZ] Was I fill up the 140 with diesel today, now Current Fuel Tax Rates

2008-04-20 Thread Tom Hargrave
Has anyone considered that it takes more oil to make a gallon of diesel than
a gallon of gas? Also, diesel fuel is subject to additional federal taxes
and in many sates, additional state taxes.

For example:
As of Oct1 of 97, federal tax per gallon of gas was 18.4 cents and federal
tax per gallon of diesel was 24.4 cents. This represents a 6 cents per
gallon difference between gas and diesel. I don't believe the federal tax
rate has changed since 1997.

In Alabama, the current tax per gallon of gas is 18 cents and current tax
per gallon of diesel is 21 cents. This represents a additional 3 cents per
gallon for diesel, for a total difference of 9 cents per gallon.

Florida's tax difference is huge. 15.6 cents per gallon for gas verses 29
cents per gallon for diesel, for a total difference (incl. the Feds) of 19.4
cents per gallon!

Pennsylvania's fuel taxes are the highest in the nation. 31.2 cents per
gallon for gas and 38.10 cents per gallon for diesel!

Here’s a link to the entire document, where you can look up your state.

Then why not nationalize healthcare, convenience stores, home mortgages,

And while you are at it, why not just invite the Federal Government into

[MBZ] a sighting

2008-04-20 Thread Rory
Working the Primary lane at the Oroville, WA/Osoyoos, BC border
crossing, a couple came through in a GL320 CDI. I wasn't aware that
the G series was availavble with the CDi. No evidence of a Bluetech

Gee that sounds really simple butdidn't you forget to mention that the
engine just happens to derive its' support by resting on the subframe. :^)
Of course that is really not that big of a deal as you just have to find
some way of supporting the engine while the subframe is removed. Not sure
I'd be wanting to work under an engine help up by a cherrypicker. Better a
chainfall or come-along to something substantial overhead.

Assuming you knew it would rise when you had to place the order - and then
it
actually *did* rise. ;-)

I can see how someone might buy your sale at a small qty and price - but to
drive the
price of a barrel of oil up by $5 or $10 takes more than people placing
orders at that
price - unless they have unlimited funds of course. And true, people in
OPEC have such deep pockets
but wht buy their own oil? Hmm.. maybe G Soros is buying it? Trying to
lose all that money he
made in the past ? Or maybe he's ust getting lucky and people keep buying
his high priced sell orders?

Seems like a plot in a novel -

Re: [MBZ] OT: McCain proposes break in fuel taxes

2008-04-20 Thread Rich Thomas
But they had run out of hope and were not interested in change. My Plan
includes nationalization of the evil oil companies (and any other
company that makes too much profit at the expense of the workers and
middle class and those left behind, e.g., food companies), programs,
hope, and change. I'll throw in some dialog and conversation too as an
added bonus.

I think the manual shows the engine being supported by a beam with
legs resting on the frame while the subframe is dropped. I was able to
R&R the oil pan on the SDL by unbolting the engine mounts, lifting the
engine to the max with the cherrypicker (it would only fall as far as
the mounts). Don't know if you could do that in a 107 though.

Well, gents, the Smart Car has arrived here in the far North burbs of
Houston. Saw one yesterday parked in the neighborhood. One of the
grandkids said "That's gotta be the smallest car in the world", to which the
youngest replied, "No, Mr. Bean's car is smaller". They had all seen the
Smart on the Discovery Channel, so they knew what it was.

They were amazed when I told them it was made by MercedesStill not sure

Re: [MBZ] OT: McCain proposes break in fuel taxes

2008-04-20 Thread Tom Hargrave
So, who decides what is too much profit? You? Or worse, the
Government???

Why would I want someone as powerful and uncaring as the IRS deciding
how much of my cashflow is "profit", deciding how much is excess and
then deciding where it should go? What motivation would I have to grow a
business under these conditions??

Thanks, Tom

But they had run out of hope and were not interested in change. My Plan

includes nationalization of the evil oil companies (and any other
company that makes too much profit at the expense of the workers and
middle class and those left behind, e.g., food companies), programs,
hope, and change. I'll throw in some dialog and conversation too as an
added bonus.

That's been done in several countries. Mexico comes to mind. Lots of
oil available, but after years of quasi-governmental control they've
been importing- especially in refined fuels.

Venezuela? Take a look at their recent production trends. Russia has
also been active in re-appropriating oil fields, and they've also seen
production stagnate with their former "partners" gone.

[MBZ] 87 300SDL loose alternator pulley

2008-04-20 Thread dave walton
All of a sudden, the serpentine belt wants to jump track and the
Alternator Pulley is loose again. I tighten it back down and it
loosens again. WIS says: "Due to a setting condition of the pulley
mounting components, the alternator pulley may become loose. Replace
Alternator. Retightening a loose alternator pulley will not insure a
permanent fix."

Anyone know what's going on? Seems a shame to replace an otherwise
good alternator.

Thanks

Jeez, *everybody* knows how aburd such a suggestion is. Except Castro of

Besides, ~10% seems pretty low - don't forget, we could get them to invest
all that profit in new refineries and
drilling rigs if we'd only open some domestic oil fields up to exploration.

You never know.

I used to work with a card carrying Communist. He would spout off "facts"
about his perfect 32 hour work week and how unfair Capitalism was to the
"working class".

One day I got fed up and I stated "It must be nice to dream about the
perfect system while working in a capitalistic society".

He asked "what do you mean".

I responded with "Here you are, enjoying the proceeds of the greatest
economy in the world. You drive the car you chose to drive. You wear the
close you chose to wear. You get to watch football on a huge 31" color
television (this was a while ago). You eat the food you want to eat. And you
have the freedom to travel anywhere in this country. And you do these things
with no restrictions other than your own finances, which by the way, are
ultimately your responsibility. You get to do all of this while dreaming of
the perfect Communist system which has proven over & over again to not be
able to provide the standard of living you are used to."

He glared at me, walked away and as far as I know still keeps his "Communist
dreams" to himself.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

I am thinking Rich is funnin' with us - ;-)

He obviously knows how absurd such a suggestion is and wants to see who will

rise to the bait --
Jeez, *everybody* knows how aburd such a suggestion is. Except Castro of
course.

Besides, ~10% seems pretty low - don't forget, we could get them to invest
all that profit in new refineries and
drilling rigs if we'd only open some domestic oil fields up to exploration.

Re: [MBZ] 87 300SDL loose alternator pulley

2008-04-20 Thread Tom Hargrave
It's been a while since I had mine off but isn't the pulley keyed? If it is
& the nut is properly tightened then it can't loosen unless the threads on
the shaft are under size or the threads on the nut are over size.

If this is the case then it's time for a new alternator.

Re: [MBZ] [Banned] I fill up the 140 with diesel today

2008-04-20 Thread Tom Hargrave
Profit is a form of rational behavior. And a free market based on profit,
that also has multiple players is the best of all worlds.

Take wide screen, flat panel color TVs for example. The "free market", the
chase for profit and the American willingness to chase down the best deal
keeps bringing the price of this technology down to the point where a set
that cost $4000 - $5000 4 years ago now costs less than $1000. And during
the same time frame, picture quality has improved immensely.

Gas and diesel are a unique situation. The refineries are running at
capacity. Because of this, all the major players are really in a "no
compete" situation. Get the refineries to the point where they are at about
80% production and then the same competitive forces that affect wide screen,
flat panel color TVs will affect the price of gas.

This is exactly what happened with Harley Davidson. My 92 Dresser was worth
exactly what it cost new - $17,500, even 10 years later. This is because
Harley-Davidson had every new bike sold before it was manufactured - they
could not keep up with demand. Then Harley-Davidson built a new
manufacturing facility and production caught up with demand. More recently
the Japanese cruisers have gotten nicer and have made inroads into the
market. The result is that Harley-Davidson announced its first serious price
reduction since the early 70s and my 92 dresser value has dropped down to
about $12,500.

Profit is all fine and good, but it's not necessarily rational or the
best choice. People will, after all, put profit ahead of anything

Re: [MBZ] [Banned] I fill up the 140 with diesel today

In the electronics industry, production cost is THE major player in selling
price. My uncle works for a division of HP in R&D/Sales and his saying
is that
the first new item off the assembly line will cost $500,000 and each one
thereafter will cost $0.05. Comparing the electronics industry to the oil
industry is like comparing apples to steel mining.

I did not say that competition would make huge changes in the cost of
gasoline. But competition will cause the manufacturing cost to drop some
because there is none between the refineries today.

Re: [MBZ] '85 380SL Questions/Issues

2008-04-20 Thread Loren Faeth
Nobody has yet attacked the premise of needing a pan gasket. I will
heartily attack that premise. It MAY need a new front crank
seal. It probably is seeping/weeping at the rear main rope
seal. They do that. it is normal. IF in fact the pan has not been
removed since the car was built, then it needs nothing. If some bozo
took the pan off for some reason, then I'd guess the bolts may be
loose, causing some seepage. I HAVE seen that before. There is NO
reason other than abuse that an MB engine should need a pan pulled at
only 100k miles. THERE IS NO OIL PRESSURE ON THE OIL PAN GASKET!!!

OUR 85 380SL is the only one I have that DOES NOT leak oil. LOOK
ELSEWHERE if it is leaking oil, like some bozo ruining the oil filter
mounting. Of course, it is still the pup of the fleet, with only 158k or so.

There are many pros, no cons I can think of. They are probably the best
cars MB ever made. Mine gets 33mpg, has plenty of power, drives very
nice, no problems. If it really has 45k on it I would figure it would
 sell for 8k plus.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap Wagon In Wichita

2008-04-20 Thread Loren Faeth
124 wagons use a tandem pump. as long as the pump has oil in it, and
the suspension remote tank has oil in it, the suspension is most
likely ok. Suspension takes special bug juice. If it has ATF in in
the suspension reservoir, that is a signal of trouble potential. 124
wagons are nice. Other than the tandem pump, the engine should be
pretty much the same as your 300SEL. M013.

Re: [MBZ] 87 300SDL loose alternator pulley

2008-04-20 Thread Loren Faeth
I think your plan will be fine without a new lockwasher. That is an
unusual size lockwasher. Not likely one you can buy locally. As
long as your lockwasher is there and looks like a lockwasher, the
key, locktight and lotsa torque should hold it on. My guess is the
missing key is the culprit.

[MBZ] ticking lifter

2008-04-20 Thread Donald Snook
I have a friend with an older buick with the 3800. He says he has a ticking
noise in the engine when it is cold. The noise goes away when warm. Sounds
like a lifter to me. I remember when I was at the dealership, there were
several cars that had this problem. Most of the time it was people who were
not very consistent with oil changes. I also remember that some of these had
this noise for years and thousands of miles. So, any ideas what I should tell
him. Will a weak/bad lifter get worse? Will it cause any other problems?
Should he try one of the many engine treatments like Rislone or any of the
others?

Tim,
MB really made this a confusing topic.

The 350 was introduced in the W126 in 91 and then cqrried over to the
W140 but they changed the designation to 300 instead of 350, for
whatever marketing reasom.

Re: [MBZ] Removing rear flange 722.4/comment

2008-04-20 Thread jfreezn
I had suggested that Kaleb might need a special socket to remove the output
flange retaining nut. To replace the rear seal on my 79 300SD, I needed a 4
prong socket.? I made one fron a standard depth, 1/2" drive,?Craftsman 12 point
socket, size 1 1/8 inch. By sawing away opposite pairs of flats, I ended up
with 4 prongs,?about 1/4" wide, and?about 1/4" tall.? Now a days, you can
probably borrow such a tool from Autozone, et al.

Is this basically what you are looking at?

Of course, you can't see the nut until you remove the driveshaft.

Subject: [MBZ] Removing rear flange 722.4

I seem to remember that recently there was a discussion about removing
the rear flange on an MB box, I gotta do a 722.4 to enable me to swap
boxes between my Mum's 190E and my 230E.
What was the outcome?

Re: [MBZ] 1992 300D, 2.5 Turbo

2008-04-20 Thread Timothy Robinson
Thanks for all the advice, guys... I kinda need the excuse to tell myself
"No." I doubt the engine has been replaced. The last three miles of my
daily drive the next 26 weeks is up the steepest state maintained road in NC
(In low gear and steady speed around 20mpg I'm sitting on about 3000 rpm for
about 9 minutes). That would probably be ideal conditions to do some engine
damage.

Re: [MBZ] 1992 300D, 2.5 Turbo/NOTE!

2008-04-20 Thread jfreezn
NOTE:? The engine in your subject line is NOT the problem engine.? On the
contrary, the 2.5 turbo would get you up the hill with ferver, and
reliability.? The 3.5 turbodiesel is tthe one with weak rods.

If you are still going to pass on this 2.5, let the list know where it is!

Re: [MBZ] 1992 300D, 2.5 Turbo/NOTE!

2008-04-20 Thread Timothy Robinson
Jim,

I was mistaken... posting on others' thread about the 1992 300D 2.5, I was
talking about a 1992 300SD (140). So, my mistake, it's not a 2.5 but an SD,
apparently with the 3.5L engine.

Nice clean vehicle, though. It's in Asheville, NC.
