[MBZ] OT: Microwave ovens
We've been in the market for a new microwave oven. After looking at the local hardware store (where the microwave ovens were still in their boxes) and online, I decided to get one from Amazon.com. I chose the Sharp R-230KK Black 800-Watt 4/5 cubic foot oven because many of the others are 17+ inches deep and leave little or no counter room in front of the microwave. It came today. I put it on our formica counter and immediately noticed that the hard plastic (front) and metal (rear) feet slide very easily over the counter, especially when you try to push to "button" to open the door. I was not impressed. It's going back. Re: [MBZ] OT: Palm River-Tampa: was bad vibration
I used to work at 78th Street and Palm River. If we didn't have a guard at the gate of our property the locals would literally walk in to the parking lot, pick a car, and either strip or steal it. Or set up housekeeping and have a little "party" in it. There is a McDonald's at that intersection as well, and even in broad daylight I wouldn't go into it. Zephyrhills is a nice, rural area, but like many of the rural areas around here these days it's becoming a place of pot growers and "hillbilly heroin" (meth) producers. Polk County, directly to our east, is the largest pot and meth producing county in the state, or so a law enforcement buddy tells me. Not the sort of thing you want to be known for, I don't think... Re: [MBZ] ebay WTF??
I know all the suggestions about switching to a Mac are very helpful, but you have all the classic symptoms of a virus - and that note from eBay is what's called a phishing site (I think) - you need to run your AV software - if you don't have one, I suggest you download the free version of AVG at http://www.grisoft.com/ww.home-and-office-security - it's a little hard to find the Free version - this should be it - http://www.grisoft.com/ww.product-avg-anti-virus-free-edition it also contains a anti-spyware - but some run are several - there are many, some are fee based and some are free. You also need a Firewall to keep Virus' & spyware from infecting your computer. There's a free Firewall called ZoneAlarm which is highly recommended. I used both of these programs (AVG& Zone Alarm) until I switched to Concast digital and started receiving free McAfee Security Suite. Even then I tried to keep them but they caused problems. Hopefully you will be able to identifyy the Virus you have - there may be a website with a specific procedure for removing that specific virus. Sometimes people must wipe their disc and re-install everything. I hope you kept a backup of important stuff - sometimes data is lost. Re: [MBZ] Peter 300D a/c problem
You can check for low charge cutout by momentarily shorting the two wire that go to the pressure switch together (the pressure switch has the spade lugs on it, not the pigtails, that one is for the fan). If the compressor comes on, it's just low. If the compressor runs for a few seconds when you first start the engine with the AC set to run (set the temp wheel full cold), then won't run again, either the KLIMA is bad or the speed signal isn't getting through (this is where I am at the moment, even with a known good KLIMA, it cuts out, so I need to find out what's up with the speed signal). Most common cause is a bad belt or bad belt tensioner allowing the belt to slip, a fairy easy fix (although the belt tensioner isn't cheap). At least on the diesel it's just a spring, why MB used the one they did on the gasser is beyond me. If it still won't come on when you jump the low pressure cutout, you have either a KLIMA problem or a pushbutton unit problem, and you will have to look that all up, it's a different pushbutton unit than the W124 and I don't have data. Re: [MBZ] (OT) general motors and their old tricks (my old story, but i tell it every time they upset me)
They obviously have no problem copying designs that work well for other car companies. There's look-alike MB grills and headlight for example. Of course, it take more than similar sheetmetal to make a quality product. There's just *one* change needed to the way they test their products - as Don Snook suggested - 100k is a piece of cake - let's see how their products work after 5-10 years of service or 200k miles - with proper servicing of course. IMHO the road tests/evaluations done by car magazines have limited value. True, if the door handle falls off when the car is less than a month old, it is telling us something important. But IMO virtually *any* car maker can produce a car with none or very few problems when it's got only a few hundred mile on it. Anyway - I agree - Hyundai and KIA learned their lessons well and changed their product to suit Americans. yeah, but to the seller, it is "actual Mileage" because it has not been altered or tampered with. [MBZ] The CDI.... 5k miles later
This car can be summed up in one word: Ridiculous Ridiculus power, comfort, features, handling, etc. I bought the car with 68k miles on it and am up to 73k now, after this weekend it'll be up to 6k miles! The 4k mile trip to Phoenix helped it out a little bit ;) The car is an absolute dream on the highway. As Marshall always said the only difference between 60mph and 100mph is that the trees move by faster. Applying 1/4 throttle at 70mph will shoot you up to 95mph seemingly instantly, and you only notice it from glancing at the speedometer. IMO, all of you that complain about the new cars being full of plastic have never been in one. The materials used in the car all seem to be of the same type/caliber as all the Mercedes I've been in. None of that hard plastic junk you find in domestic vehicles. Everything is padded and elegant. The fit & finish is first class as well. Also, all of the small doors (ashtray, etc) and the fold out cup holders unfold quietly and slowly. For example, on any other car, if you had fold out cup holders they would snap out and make all kinds of noise. In the CDI you push the release latch and it slowly and elegantly unfolds. IMO, this is what makes a Mercedes a Mercedes. There are lots of those little things on this car. The handling is typical Mercedes. Kinda rough at low speeds, but smooths out the faster you go. 45mph or so seems to be the magic speed that it calms down. In Phoenix it was hardly noticeable since the roads are in such good shape and you drive 45mph+ everywhere. However, in Starkville where the roads aren't so nice and the speed limits are 35mph its a little rough. No better or worse than the others I have. The transmission is also typical Mercedes... its noticeable. In almost all other (non MB) vehicles I've ridden in the transmission shifts are barely noticeable, but the MBs have always had noticeable shifts. Especially under medium throttle. The CDI is 10x better than any other MB I've driven, but I expected better. To be fair, I think part of it is the crazy torque the CDI produces. At full throttle its like driving a standard. full power - full power - computer backs off throttle - shift - computer re-applies throttle - full power - etc. It doesn't get off the throttle completely, but you can notice it. The transitions are smooth though! :) And as time passes it won't need re-adjustment constantly (I hate those mechanical adjustments!!!). It *is* significantly better than any of the mechanical adjustment cars I've driven, and if you get used to the shift points you can make it as smooth as any other car. I just expected that to be unnecessary. Overall, I'm very happy with the car. It has its few little quirks (like every car on the market), but they are far overshadowed by how fun the car is to drive and how nice it is. I've attached some pictures... One picture is of the instrument cluster somewhere on I-40. The MPG estimate is a little high (actual on that tank was 36.6 I think), but that is still awesome. Especially the way I drive. ;) The other picture is of the car at my Uncle's house. Its not black though.. its a dark gray that is slightly metallic. VERY pretty color. That would be a perfect car to convert to a 200D 2.4. That would make one very pricey car though. I have never proven it, but I suspect you can put a /8 rear subframe under it and that would make it handle well without additional trunk weight. I would not bet any money on the miles being actual. most of those desert cars look nice but are worn out. There is no telling how many times the odometer has rolled over 9 and back to 0. That is still "actual mileage" Actually, there should be enough room in there to put in an OM 603 or OM606! That would make the old girl a screamer! I bought a euro 280SEL to put the twin cam engine in a 111, but I will never get it done. I figured that would be a hotrod of sorts. a sleeper anyway. Yes, those of us who are happy to drive 240Ds do have occasional lusts for power. If for no other reason that to be able to pass some of the drivers who sneer at our fuel thrifty machines. [MBZ] OT: Palm River-Tampa: was bad vibration
My BIL, a carpenter, moved down from Huntingburg, Indiana and built a house near the corner of Maydell Dr and Palm River Rd in 1947. It was open country/farmland then. I stayed with him while I was working in Tampa for a few years in the 1970s. When they built the big subdivision across the road from his house, my sister knew it was time to move, but he loved his house and refused to consider it. The neighborhood got dangerous, so the family chipped in and loaned my sister enough money to buy a house in Zephyrhills. BIL, a contrary WW-2 army vet, tried to stay in in his PR house. He lasted about 3 months and finally moved to Zephyrhills too. They sold the house and three rental houses they owned in PR. I really felt sorry for BIL. He loved his PR home and loved to fish off the PR bridge. Sad. The 16v is a $264 part, probably because of the rpm limit. If I had to buy one, I'd probably buy one for an 8v or a 12v engine, I never drive redline on 20 year old cars anyway. The 8v relay is $101 new from Rusty. Re: [MBZ] V-8 fuel pump relay needed
Maybe all I need then is the relay. Last fall when this problem first surfaced, someone on the list suggested that over 5A meant the fuel pump was bad, and a draw over 5 A. would fry the relay. I was working from that. I already ordered the FP, so I will test it when it gets here. I kind of expected the used FP I ordered to draw the same current. I see no signs of damage in the relay. Nothing looks cooked and the points are so small I cant see if they are damaged. I will probably not resolder it, because I am not sure my skills are up to it. I don't have the heat sinks, desoldering tools and so forth, so i would likely fry something. This relay is labelled. I have seen many instances where one electronic component was labelled and another was not. Just depends on the supplier as far as I can tell. MB does not seem to require a part number. I had often wondered about the banana plugs but never tried it. I was trying to figure out how to measure amps when I remembered this old lab equipment. I use the cabinet for tools, but I never removed the voltmeter and ammeter. It also has a huge old variac built in. I always thought it would be good to have one, but never have put it to use. Never found an application where it was needed. Re: [MBZ] V-8 fuel pump relay needed
> > banana plugs fit perfectly into the 30 and 86 holes Now we're talking. I used to keep a 2" chunk of 14ga house wire in the fuse box on all Saab 99s. A simple free spare part to have handy in case the rpm sensing fuel pump relay went bad. Two banana plugs takes the cost out of the "free" category, but it beats walking, especially in my 16v which shut down on me about 50 times last year. (it always restarted, I could usually turn the key off for two seconds, turn it back to on, and continue on my way, but sometimes it happened two or three times before the relay decided to stay on for good) On this subject, is there any trick to getting the clear cover off a W201 so I can pull the relay? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

That's about what mine draws. What's wrong with your relay? The high current could have cooked it, but sometimes the extra heat only ruins the solder joints, which can be refreshed. The relay is easily opened. New ones are something like $150, so it's usually well worth whipping it with an iron. I did mine, and it started working properly after a resoldering. You could resolder it and burnish the relay contacts and see what happens. Interestingly, nowhere on my relay, supposedly a 000 545 36 05, is its Mercedes part number. Was yours labeled? > Haven't been able to find a used FP relay so for. They seem to fail enough that it keeps the supply of good used parts down. Probably doesn't help that the 380 SL used four different relays over its production life. > banana plugs fit perfectly into the 30 and 86 holes Excellent idea with the banana plugs. I should have tried that, I have some. I am going to be in Fernandina Beach next week from 5/6 to 5/10. Would anyone like to meet for lunch at Singletons as we had discussed earlier last month? I seem to recall that the outfit in Portland that did my 560 SL's U-joint, with balancing, was somewhere in the $200-300 range. (It was subcontracted by the shop that replaced the center bearing and support.) The entire job, all labor included, plus shipping back and forth to Portland was less than your numbers. BTTT! It was a Stanley that tried to kill him. The Doble has a sparkplug for ignition. The video on Jay's website is EXCELLENT. Grossly overpriced and poorly maintained Ponton. A true POC with the seat covers, and worth well below the asking price.
