Re: [MBZ] OT: Boats
I would personally be very interested in seeing how well that would work. I currently have a couple of aluminum boats with 2 stroke outboard motors. I would like to get an inboard outboard but have been shying away from the larger engines due to fuel costs. There are 120 to 140 horse 4 cylinder versions out there and I wonder how well a MB diesel would handle the boat if used as a replacement. I am guessing the engine would be heavier and obviously a 240D does not put out similar horsepower but diesels have good torque and I wonder if that would help to offset the loss of HP. Unfortunately, I don't know a whole lot about the gearing etc of the existing setups. I am assuming that the gas motor would run something like 4 to 5K rpm at or close to full throttle. I am assuming the diesel would not be happy at that rpm so one would have to regear in some manner to keep the rpm of the prop in the range it expects. Lots of these boats are capable of pretty good speed on the water. I don't really care about going all that fast. It has to get on plane but 20 mph would be fine instead of 40 mph. Would love to hear from anyone with direct experience and or good insight. I'm not an engineer and I may be way off on some of my thoughts on this. One advantage would of course be reduced concern about fuel vapour and the possibility of explosion and fire. Gas inboards some times do that. 240D does not put out similar horsepower but diesels have good torque and I wonder if that would help to offset the loss of HP. I suspect that the torque (acceleration) vs HP (speed) thing is less useful for boats, so that one would miss any horsepower that weren't there. Don't small boats spend a whole lot of their time at or near top speed? gas motor would run ~ 4 to 5K rpm at or close to full throttle. Mine does. Around 4400 RPM at speed on the lake. I am assuming the diesel would not be happy at that rpm The MB diesels run up there, but would probably be happier somewhat slower. so one would have to regear in some manner to keep the rpm of the prop in the range it expects. On my boat that was done with prop selection. The pitch of the prop is in effect the final 'road gear'. I got both carburetors off my motor. Re: [MBZ] Foam-free AC hose
If Marshall were here, he would be INSISTING that you MEASURE the pressure, not just GUESS! There's a service port on the transmission that allowsd you to measure modulated pressure. It really should be adjusted to spec per the technical specification manual. It's really pretty easy to do. The manual says to measure while the car is in motion (~30 miles per hour), but my experience is that the static pressure will be within 0.1 bar at idle, with the transmission at operating temp. I agree with your mechanic. The modulator adjustment isn't really that sensitive. It may take a turn or two to get there. 1/8th of a turn won't even show up on the gauge. Seems to me it was roughly 1 turn = 0.1 bar. Partly looking for better fuel economy on a bigger boat. Older 2 strokes are dirty and inefficient on fuel. Newer 4 stroke or injected 2 stroke outboards are expensive. Re: [MBZ] OT: Boats
To start with, one would need some form of adaptor to mate the engine to the drive system. Then usually, marine engines have water jacketed exhaust manifolds. I assume that may be to keep the engine compartment cool as much as to cool the engine since the engine is usually housed in a small box. Most I/O's would have raw water cooling systems rather than a closed system but one could do a closed system I guess - more common on salt water vessels. I only operate in fresh water lake with reasonably cool water so not much of a corrosion issue. Could mount the fuel tank in the bow to even out the weight a bit. Prop selection would essentially be changing gearing I guess. Still wonder if 240D engine has sufficient umph to make it work. As I said earlier, not too concerned about top speed. So long as it would get on plane things should be acceptable. Problem might be the length of time and distance it would take to get on plane, especially if the boat was loaded down with people etc. Don't think it would be a ski boat. Back in the late 60's (or early 70's) my father in law had an old Starcraft I/O with the 80HP Renault engine. I remember being in that boat with several other people and trying to get it to plane. We ran a long way with all of us up by the windshield trying to shift enough weight forward to get it on plane. It finally did, and then would remain on plane so long as one did not slow the engine speed. The main issue was that the boat leaked quite badly and there was no doubt quite a bit of water in the bilge that added a lot of weight and of course shifted to the stern as soon as one took off and the bow lifted. It was so bad when they quit running it that it had to be parked nearest the shore. It would settle to the bottom over night. The boat was aluminum and there were cracks in the hull down about the water line where the formed in spray rails were. He gave it to my wife and I and I sold it a year or so later to someone who repaired it. That was about the time that I went back to university and as such did not have the financial ability to hang on to it and repair it (which was the initial intention when he gave it to us). A mistaken assumption, the OM engines are limited to something like 5500rpm and are quite content to wail away at that speed all day long. When I used to commute with my 240D there were many occasions we'd hit 495N and rise up to maximum speed (86mph?) and hold there for 20 minutes until my exit. [MBZ] Taking the cake
A YOUNG girl embarrassed by her name - Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii - has won a new one from a family court judge in New Zealand. Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt, ruling in the city of New Plymouth in the North Island, made the youngster a ward of court so that she could change the name she hates. Judge Murfitt, in a written ruling released yesterday, said the girl's mother had not given any thought to the implication of naming her daughter. In all facets of life, a child bearing this name would be held up to ridicule and suspicion, Judge Murfitt wrote in the ruling made in February. The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name for her. It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap quite unnecessarily. The name issue arose during a custody hearing for the girl. Judge Murfitt also took a stand against other parents saddling their children with bizarre names despite officials often trying to talk them out of unusual choices, saying this could create social hurdles as they grew up. He cited as examples a family who named their children after six-cylinder Ford cars, twins called Benson and Hedges and youngsters called Midnight Chardonnay, Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence. Quite frequently judges in the family court are dismayed by the eccentricity of names which some litigants have given their children, he wrote. New Zealand's Child, Youth and Family agency was quoted as telling local reporters that it did not consider odd names as such to be child abuse although it could be classified as such if a child was bullied because of his or her name. In Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii's case, there was no bullying, probably because the girl was so embarrassed that she never told friends her real name, instead calling herself K. Judge Murfitt gave the girl a new name but it was not made public in order to protect her privacy. The custody case was also resolved. ** Get fantasy football with free live scoring. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to The War Zone. I wanted to share with you what happened. He got off the plan and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram. As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service. So really he was just here to make a showing for the American's back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you. I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States. I just don't understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country. If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake. In service, CPT Jeffrey S. [MBZ] North Dakota Oil field
A friend who is the regional manager in ND for Enercrest Corp sent an email about what's going on up there. He said its like a boom town, only it involves three states. In the three counties he serves, he said there are about 75 drilling rigs going day and night. The strange thing is that oil has been being taken from the area known as the Bakken Formation since 1951. In 2007, a Houston company, EOG Resources drilled a well that was estimated to produce 700,000 barrels and the rave was on. The latest USGS estimate is 25 times what their 1995 estimate was. Here is part of there report: The Bakken Formation estimate is larger than all other current USGS oil assessments of the lower 48 states and is the largest continuous oil accumulation ever assessed by the USGS. A continuous oil accumulation means that the oil resource is dispersed throughout a geologic formation rather than existing as discrete, localized occurrences. The next largest continuous oil accumulation in the U.S. is in the Austin Chalk of Texas and Louisiana, with an undiscovered estimate of 1.0 billions of barrels of technically recoverable oil. My friend says he hears talk that other so called played out fields will be looked at in light of what new drilling techniques can do. [MBZ] Conundrum
Gang, You're all clever folks so I figured I'd pose this here. I'm pretty well set to buy LT Don's VW in a couple weeks. The plan is to fly out and drive back. I have a friend in Chicago my wife and I plan to stop and spend some time there. The problem is getting from the airport in Des Moines to LT Don's pad in Jefferson something like 1 1/2 hour away. The cheapest flights are on the Monday (August 18 IIRC) but the good LT has to work. I'm thinking right now are cheapest option is to rent an econobox in Des Moines and return it the next day or even later the same day. Our route is back through Des Moines so the time lost is minimal. Looks like a rental will be about $35 plus gas which is actually less than I'd thought... Re: [MBZ] OT: Dial-up ISP Recommendations
I'd look for a service that just gives you IP access, bare bones, and then couple that with a free email account like gmail or fastmail. No sense getting locked in to an email address etc. with a provider who you may want to drop at any time. The one real big, noticable hill we have is south of Santa Fe on I-25. The other routes are a lot of little ones after the other, except maybe for the route from Clines Corners to Santa Fe on 285. I've driven that only once, when we came here. It was at night and nearly 6 years ago. It will be interesting to see how the Duramax does.
