I've been thinking its too bad I didn't hear about the 24 hours of Lemons sooner. Theres one in CT at the end of the month. A 240D seems like a good car for it. My idea is to throw myself at the mercy of the BS court and try to get awarded BONUS laps Maybe next year. With a new hood it won't be so bad. With a quickie rolled on rustoleum paint job it'll be nearly acceptable. The ad will read something like 32MPG, Biodiesel ready! and its not even a lie. I really did get 32mpg once with that car and I have run it on biodiesel and even veggie oil. -Curt --- On Sat, 8/2/08, Wonko the Sane [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Wonko the Sane [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] MB Chowdah Fest -September 13 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Date: Saturday, August 2, 2008, 11:03 PM That is one butt-ugly car. I bought a cheapo from some truckload sale...had to take it back and get a replacement..salesman handed me another, missing a brush and said to take this one for parts. It is not the most powerful thing but I have been using it to remove lug nuts at the scrap yard when I haul in cars for a few years now. It used to run well on my 800w inverter but it draws too much for that now that it is getting worn so I use a small generator and it works great. If I was going to buy another I would look at a higher end Milwaukee or DeWalt. Normally you would harvest peel anaheims when they are green. Oh, well, have a taste and use your mouth-imagination to figure what they would go well with when red. Roasted green chiles, in the proud New Mexico tradition, go well with anything except perhaps pancakes or ice cream. Scramble 'em in your eggs. Throw 'em in your hash browns. Put them in your beef stew. Top your chicos beans with them. Stuff them with cheese, dip them in batter and fry them. Put them in your corn chowder. use them as a hamburger topping. Wizz them up in a blender with milk and sour cream and use them as an enchilada sauce. The list is endless. Re: [MBZ] On welding
I think you'll find more excuse to use one than you know of. I love welding, very theraputic. I've played with a stick welder. Dad has one from one of those tool shows, I think he paid $80. Its 110v but will weld up to I think 3/8 or some crazy thickness. MUCH harder to strike and arc with MUCH harder to weld with. For sticking two big chunks of metal together its terrific, for anything requiring any finesse its a waste of time. Very difficult to tack weld with too, I could never have done what I did yesterday with a stick welder in 5x the time. If I were repairing farm equipment a stick welder makes sense, for any kind of body work its got to be a mig gun. -Curt Date: Sun, 03 Aug 2008 11:49:33 -0400 From: Steve MacSween [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [MBZ] On welding To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Anyone use a stick welder for small jobs? That's just because most people insist on using 1/8 rods on everything. If you get some thiner rods and use the proper amps it can be just as easy as MIG. Think about how thin MIG wire is. Re: [MBZ] On welding
Anyone use a stick welder for small jobs? Sure. Small _thin metal_ jobs? This is apropos: Unless you are VERY skilled, you'll burn right thru sheet matal as if it was toilet paper. They're great for thicker metal, and for exotic jobs such as hard facing, jobs for which special rods can be used as opposed to the relatively few types of wire you can get on a spool. My wrench says they are useless but his two employees disagree. I don't know enough to have an informed opinion... beyond the fact it's half the cost (vs. mig) for something I'll use once a year. I paid $50 (or was it $75?) for my Miller stick welder at a yard sale. There have been so many made over the years it doesn't really make sense to buy a new one. The semipros have wire-feed welders, and so do I, so there's a lot of sticks dumped out there, but there are still places to use the stick. When you get rod at yard sales too it's hard to beat the price of stick welding. If you're planning to weld sheet metal, you will want a wire-feed welder. But a $50 stick welder could also have its uses. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] On welding
I think it really comes down to the user's skill level. We have both a stick welder and wire feed in our shop, and I choose them based on need. If I have to weld a couple of pieces of 1/4 steel diamond plate together, I'll use a stick welder. If I have to do some sheet metal work, it's the MIG welder. I can weld fairly thick steel with a stick welder, but I'm not that accomplished with the wire feed welder. I think it takes a lot more practice to weld with a wire feed welder than it does stick welding. That being said, I have known guys who can weld sheet metal with a stick welder. [MBZ] Coolant reservoir failure
I had an interesting experience yesterday with the new 300D. I was returning from Alexandria VA, running late and in the mountains on I68 during the hotter part of the day when I'd planned on being many, many miles further on (combination of a traffic tie-up on I70 at Frederick and my elderly mother running VERY slow in the morning after 4 days in the hospital with pneumonia -- my life has been like that lately). I'd driven through at night the week before with no problems -- engine temp running around 95C on the steep grades, nothing abnormal, but this time suddenly the temp climbs up to 110C or so, so I slow way down and crawl up the truck lane. Coolant level and oil level light came on (it uses oil, so I'm not surprised there), and the temp dropped right back to normal and the coolant level light went off as soon as I got off the upgrade. Stopped at the next gas station and got ripped off for a quart of cheap oil and a gallon of pre-mix coolant, only used a quart of so, but I wanted the reservoir totally full so I wouldn't boil it out. I assumed I had a bad radiator cap, as that is the typical failure I've seen when the car runs too hot on grades or boils when stopping from a hard run (not typical on the diesels, as I idle the turbo down for a couple minutes when I stop. However, when I cleaned up the oil- soaked cap from the wrecked car and put it on, it did not seal, instead bubbling out around the neck of the tank. I pulled them both, and in the bottom of the new car's tank there was a metal ring. it appears that the neck is roll crimped to the plastic tank, and the crimp failed on my car, leaving the neck loose in the plastic, at least loose enough to leak pressure off. Hence I was boiling the coolant on that steep grade -- didn't let it get above 100C the rest of the trip (I turned the AC off on long grades), but I think swapping the tanks will fix it. Re: [MBZ] On welding
For somebody who's practiced sure but for a newbie MIG is much easier. I forget what size rod I was using, much smaller than 1/8 though, 3/32 maybe? I did make one decent repair on my lawnmower and Dad did a decent job welding up an exhaust for me. The exhaust I later redid with my MIG unit to get a cleaner weld... -Curt Date: Sun, 03 Aug 2008 14:47:41 -0400 From: MG [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] On welding To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed That's just because most people insist on using 1/8 rods on everything. If you get some thiner rods and use the proper amps it can be just as easy as MIG. Think about how thin MIG wire is. Manfred Message: 11 Date: Sun, 03 Aug 2008 12:54:14 -0400 From: Peter T. This sort of thing JB Weld is very good at. Clean it up, rough up the plastic, and lay on a bead. I've also used it to seal an AC hose (where the metal over metal crimp failed) and, in a pinch, to seal the end of a leaking gasoline line on the boat motor. (Since replaced.) The AC line was still holding years later when I sold the car.

[MBZ] 1985 300SD - AC - Compressor replacement ..
Well I finally got to repairing my AC in my SD. I replaced the Compressor and the hose the connects to the compressor. I bought the parts a while ago .. ( before my accident, I am now almost able to do stuff again). The poets on the new compressor (GM R5 type) are noticeably different than the old one. Had a fully machined grove for the o-rings. The new one has just a 'step' and this makes the ports larger. It came with a number of different sealing washers and some instructions that do not apply to this application. Rusty included another set of sealing washers. The problem apperas to be that the ports are to large for the AC line to locate, to much slop. Any one know the fix for this .?? Re: [MBZ] Coolant reservoir failure
Hmm I have the spare tank installed now, it's fine except for being rather dark from all the oil that got in the coolant on the old car (cracked head). I'd rather not trust JB Weld here, it's under considerable pressure, and the rolled crimp has broken off -- I'm not sure there is any way to get enough adhesive between the metal neck and the plastic tank to make me happy it won't simply blow the neck out of the tank under full pressure -- good way to crack the head on a 603. The tank is cheap compared to a new head At any rate, I'll test it soon, as the temp is going to be 95 F or so tomorrow when I get out of work, and I have a lot of stop and go traffic for the first few miles on the way home. No 7 mile 5% grades, though... Can you swap the manifold from the old compressor to the new one? Often that is the only part that's different.
