[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: ...Even if the lights are all working, I belive the warning lamp can illuminate if you have different wattages in the various lamps. Everything has to be in balance to extinguish the dash lamp I believe you are thinking about Karma or something. All the lamp out module is looking for is current flow in a particular circuit reduced below a preset level. For example, doubling amperage in the brake light circuit will not turn on the lamp out light. But, putting in a relay when installing brighter headlight bulbs will turn on the light because the relay draws considerably less amperage than a 55W headlight filament. I thought it worked by something like a wheatstone bridge arrangement, e.g. assuming nothing is burned out, the current flow through the lamps on the left will balance the current flow on the right. When a eventually burns out this will throw off the balance and trigger the lamp out warning. The same effect *could* be triggered by having a higher wattage bulb in the left parking lamp than the right. I don't know if it's as simple as left side vs. right side, or it may not work that way at all. I do seem to recall Marshall (I think) saying that different wattage bulbs could trigger a false alarm, though. Re: [MBZ] heat pumps geothermal
My wife and I looked at a GSHP pretty seriously when we moved to our new-to-us house. Most manufacturers still make them, as I recall Trane bought one of the older suppliers so their stuff was very nice. Most of the newer ones are sized for industrial but you can get GSHPs on the lower end. In our area (Durham NC, i.e. north central NC) there were a lot of these installations that went in 20-30 years ago, from what I gather. The copper ones (required for direct exchange systems) corroded and the iron ones (indirect) started to leak, so (according to my normal HVAC repair guys) 'everyone' wound up replacing them with normal heat pumps rather than rr the tubes. I'm sure that's a bit of an exaggeration on their part but we do have very acidic soil (high clay content) so possibly not. They work for a very big company in the area and said they didn't know of any residence with a current GSHP installation. When I called around for quotes two years ago there was only one guy willing to even price an installation, and he was pushing hard to get me to stick with one of the high-efficiency above-ground units. He himself had been using a pump-and-dump GSHP (the most efficient install, basically you tap a spring, add heat, and send it on its way) until the first big drought a few years back, and said that his new installation of air-source was as efficient. Since then I know a new company has opened in Raleigh that does exclusively direct exchange (DX) but we didn't want to go there, I'm an indirect kind of guy. If anyone is interested I can probably dig up their contact information. They had training programs and whatnot so you could satisfy your inner nerd about the technology, but I am unconvinced that running Freon through the ground is a good idea. YMMV. What I did learn from all that is that if you go with a GSHP install, call the local HVAC companies and talk to their old techs to get the real ground temperature. I read/heard high 60s for the area, the HVAC guys said they've seen 72. Couple that with many complaints of an undersized heat-dump volume (i.e. not working on hot days over time) and I believe the HVAC guys were probably right. It's a lot easier to bid low on an undersized system with a GSHP, too, since well size is proportional to temperature difference. Between that and the major pain it is to drill a well in the city we decided to go non-GSHP; at the moment we've just got a central AC and mobile heaters, which suits our use of the house quite nicely. When the kids are bigger (i.e. not in the living room all afternoon) we'll go central air-source HP, probably. Good luck. :) -Tim www.waterfurnance.com is what I have, don't know about any others. Randy, Most of the older cars with pushbutton CC have one bulb and a spaghetti string of fiber optic to direct light to various places. Get the bulb(s) from Rusty or a dealer. IME, FLAPS don't have the right bulb. The ones they claim work, are too fat, and won't slide in the holder. Remember, to most of us, 1990 is a NEW car. I do have a 1994 E320, but never been into the console. On 124, or at least older 124s, you start at the tray between the seats. Lift the front of the carpet tray liner, to expose a screw. Take out the screw ***BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE WOOD PANELS. THE PLASTIC CLIPS ARE ONLY HELD TO THE WOOD WITH SHORT STAPLES, AND THESE PULL OUT VERY EASILY.*** carefully pull the shift area wood panel up and back. You have to get the electric switches unplugged or to snap out of the wood panel Next you can remove the ash tray then you can remove the cc panel Once you have the cc panel free, you can find the bulb(s) WHile you are in there, there is supposed to be a light for the gear shift indicator. You might want to replace that bulb too. HTH Don't know if your suspect car has the same setup though. It does have the 3.55, and I have found out that Ford put those in for faster initial acceleration. The top end speed ends up being irrelevant, because Ford puts a limiter on them at 129 mph. Ford determined that the mixed matrix driveshaft (I have no idea what that means) is tougher than the standard aluminum, but still decided that 130 was the limit that the driveshaft could take. Got the Mass Air Sensor (MAS) on Tuesday. Swapped it out in the parking lot while Daughter was working. Last night she said the car seems to be fine now. No more searching and stalling. As for the electrical problem: The turn signals/flasher and wiper are intermittent together, but are on different circuits. That is why I don't believe it is a fuse issue. It could be a ground issue under the dash, or somewhere else, or it might be a problem within the turn signal/multiswitch stalk. I plan to do some testing on Sat. Long ago I had weird problems relating the turnsignals and headlights, but I don't remember the symptoms now. I do remember I bought a used turnsignal/multi switch and that solved the problem. Rolf wrote: You can't have both. You get top end or you get acceleration. 3.55 will be increased accel, 3.27 increased top end. Well, not quite. If you rephrase that as potential top end speed I can agree. Top end can be tricky because of the inconsistencies of the torque curve. It is quite possible that the 3.55 will have a faster top speed. What is certain is that at a given road speed, the engine will be turning faster with 3.55 than with 3.27. Fuel economy will usually improve with a lower ratio (3.27) - but not always, especially with a turbo diesel. There is a big increase in efficiency as the turbo spools up. So if the higher ratio (3.55) means that the engine is in it's sweet spot at your highway speed, you quite possibly will get faster acceleration and better economy at the same time. Most of the older cars with pushbutton CC have one bulb and a spaghetti string of fiber optic to direct light to various places. Get the bulb(s) from Rusty or a dealer. IME, FLAPS don't have the right bulb. The early type III's use a string of four bulbs stuck into clips behind and above the buttons. I think a lot has to do with my driving technique. I try not to do jackrabbit starts and cruise on the interstate at or below below 70. I use the cruise control as much as possible, too. My wife drove our 2001 Nissan Altima from when it was new until about 60k. She barely got 20 mpg in that car (4 cylinder slushbox.) The Volume License version, and a volume license key allow you to use the install disk on multiple computers and frees you from the 5 hardware changes and you are out that is so loved. You can get the VLK by following the instructions on how to get your keys for your subscription. You have to use VLK for VL versions and vice versa. Mixed versions don't work. If your Sub. allows you to get a VL version and a VLK, the best thing is to always use them and lock up or hide all the non-VLK disks and keys. YOu then can use one disk and one key for all your client machines. Have fun but if you install the vista crap, remember you can set it up to look like W2K and it will hum along Way faster! Randy wrote: Even if one assumes a 75 mph speed limit, 129 is mort than 50 mph over the limit. That sort of thing often equates to large fines, seized vehicles and taking the bus to work for a few months. I agree and I don't think I will ever drive 120 mph (at least not again). I did test out the fuel cut-off switch on my Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. At 110 the fuel cuts off and the car starts bucking and jerking until you get below 110. But, I had a good excuse. I was going from Topeka, Kansas to Lawrence, Kansas on the turnpike. I was running late for the Washburn Law Golf tournament. I couldn't be late. I knew all the Troopers on that section of the turnpike. But, I don't think I will be going that fast anytime soon. When I am out in Western Kansas and the roads are wide open and flat I will routinely drive 95-100 - at least in my old 300SEL. Once that big car got going, it would really fly. I haven't tried it in the Volvo. I wonder how many RPM's that little four cylinder would be turning at that speed. I once got pulled over going 100 in Arkansas. My grandfather had died. I was racing down to the Mississippi gulf coast to meet my father. I had my ticket in hand. I told the cop why I was speeding and showed him the plane ticket to show my urgency. What, besides the fuel injection system, alternator and A/C compressor, would have inordinate wear after 8,000+ hours of idling? That is a concern. You are right. Idling for thousands of hours would be hard on a car. BUT, thousands of these cars are sold every year to individuals, smaller cities counties, taxi companies, etc. If they really were completely worn out, I think no one would ever buy one. Supposedly this car was not used as a patrol car (and the rear cloth seat is some evidence of that) and it was taken home every night by the MOHP and then by a detective. [MBZ] W108 suspension - compensator spring kit FYI
Gang, I'm curious to know whether others have noticed that a W108 with the steel compensator spring rides harder than a W108 with a *properly functioning* hydropneumatic compensator. I removed the dead hydropneumatic compensator from my W108 a couple of months ago, and at the same time ripped out the crappy Midas shocks that some sadist installed, replacing them with new Bilsteins (thank you Rusty). I also replaced the axle support bushing in the trunk and the brake lines. The process was relatively easy. The key tip is that you need to disconnect the brake lines and let the rear axle halves hang as low as they will go (lower them GENTLY or you can crack the diff casing). With the axles lowered you can lever the spring in place (put one of the mounting bracket bolts in place, place the spring, and then pivot the mounting bracket (this could require considerable force) into position to insert the other mounting bolt. But I digresss. I was expecting the rock-hard ride to convert to a lovely wafting W123-like experience. Not so. It is somewhat softer, but still very hard. And the car is also sitting a little too high. Before changing the compensator, the car was sitting too low. My first suspicion was the new shocks, and they remain a possible culprit. They are HD, but HD is the only shock specified or available for the W108 on both the Bilstein and Sachs lists. Even the MB EPC has subbed in the HD shocks, so presumably if softer ones ever were available they are now unavailable. My next culprit is the compensating spring. Some detective work on the EPC and on the Febi packaging revealed that the conversion kit includes a harder, thicker spring 110 329 05 01 originally intended for vehicles with increased ground clearance. There is a softer spring available from MB. So this morning I went to my friendly (no, really!) local MB dealer and ordered the softer commpensating spring 110 329 04 01. Anyway, I will try installing the new spring and will let you all know how it turns out. At the very least it should bring the car down a couple of centimetres. For $90 it's worth a try. I've never quite understood why MB chose this particular design; the axle is sprung at the wheels anyway, and the trunk mount keeps the diff secured, so I don't quite understand the point of the extra spring. [MBZ] plumbing / chemical help needed
First, let me say we have some weird things in our home. The kitchen drain is at the start of what might well be its own line to the septic tank. The trap leads back to the front wall of the house, then does a 90 turn expanding to a 2.5 or 3 copper pipe that has a flat 8' run, then does a 90 down [it is copper into the wall, no idea what material beyond that] then it is in a direct line with the septic tank, but would need to go either under or around the master bedroom/bath, and might tap in there. The kitchen sink started to back up, so I am at it with my snake [which will go as far as the 90 down turn] and that hits nothing. Next is the expanding ball that I use to blow out clogs. That will run for as long as I want, but that only mimics a slow drain, and makes no difference to a slow leak. The sink backs up after a 30 seconds of the water being turned on, then drains down slowly. Friendly local hardware store sold me copper sulfate to kill what sounded like roots clogging the line. Now the problem: The first warning on the copper sulfate is to use it only in a toilet, and not to use it in a sink or tub as it will corrode the metal drain. I can protect the sink drain if the chrome finish on that is the only problem, but is there any chance the copper sulfate would damage a copper pipe or the metal pipes under the sink? Doesn't seem like it would, but this sort of thing is not my field, and I would really hate to have to replace the big copper pipe that runs behind my tiled in kitchen cabinets. Re: [MBZ] Speeding was Re: rear end questions
I have to tell one on my son here. He has a Miata that he added a high volume turbo to [he was a mechanic at the time] and a few other custom parts that did tweak it up a good bit. It would get along quite well. Coming back from retraining in computers out in the Midwest somewhere he was letting it out more than a bit too much in some open area, came over the top of a hill and there was Smokey waiting for such as he. He had been going at a speed that would have gotten his car confiscated and had him looking at the wrong side of some local bars where they don't get service by cute waitresses. Fortunately he had slowed down a bit for the hill, but not nearly enough. Just as the officer was pulling out after him a muscle car came screaming over the same hill going probably 125 MPH or more. The officer ignored him and took off after the muscle car. That did prove a wakeup call and he put himself into permanent slower mode. He had recently made sergeant, and thinking how that would have looked on his record was sobering. Cutting it a bit too close, but he got lucky. He didn't give me a ticket, but told me to slow down. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] Ticking noise in a diesel?/roll to stop CLUNK
You have to put a vac gauge on the line that goes to the tranny (usually black). It should be high (10-14 in Hg) at idle, then drop proportionate to throttling when you accelerate. Yours will not be high at idle, in my guesstimate, so you need to find the leak/s. In my case, there was insufficient vac on the green line to HVAC system...so I took off the console and there is a column of vac junctions - color coded and numbered and I tested them to see what was holding and what wasn't. TWO of the pods were leaking YET they had sufficient vac to operate. So just because your locks work, does not mean that they are not leaking. Holding for three days does not mean there are no leaks when the pods are in operation. I replaced the vacuum control valve, modulator valve, a couple hoses and connectors, and one of the cheap Teflon widgets on top of the valve cover. It has improved but still clunks. The door locks work pretty well for 3 days and the ACC is fine. How did you trouble shoot the vacuum pods as a source of the problem? I also thought it was wear in the drive train, but it was not. It was low vacuum to the tranny due to two cracked vac pods behind the glove compartment (HVAC system). Replaced the pods and everything was fine...and it was a really loud clunk. I would DEFINITELY investigate vacuum to tranny before replacing driveline components.
