How about a pair of resistor in an can of oil as a dummy load.
Built a "L" pad for 15 dB loss and 200W power rating.

8 ohm resistor in parallel with the speaker, and a 25 ohm in
series with the two comes out to about 15 dB loss which is 3 W
out with 100 W in.

Re: [MBZ] list S/N ratio

2009-03-13 Thread Gary Hurst
my issue is how to reduce the power without reducing the tone. in the old
days, bands would demand more and more power to take their acts to bigger
and bigger audiences. a lot of these amps sounded, and still sound, great,
but aren't very practical for the home. that hundred watt combo amp that
served pete townshend so well will shake your walls and have the police in
your driveway. and it will make you deaf.

so the problem is along the lines of how can we reduce that amp from 100
watts to, say, a more living room manageable 5 watts so we can overdrive
those tubes just like our favorite rockers did and not suffer the
consequences listed above.

a quality attenuator is an quick answer, but now you've got this solid state
box messing with your all tube bliss. a somewhat more time consuming method
is the make changes to the tubes to bring about this radical power demise.

there's a lot of help out there to do this job. i'm glad this amp is
circuit boards as i'd otherwise probably have the chassis out and mess with
the innards, which is never a good thing for me to be doing

when i'm done, i'll take it down to the real amp guy and have him go over it
and fix all my messups, where the dialog goes from "that could work, i
guess, but i don't know anyone who would do it that way" to "this is how
people end up burning their house down".

as an aside, there is only one full time dedicated profesional guitar tube
amp guy left in the entire atlanta metro and i fear he will not be able to
hold on too much longer. if anybody is interested in helping him out by
buying a guitar amp made entirely by hand and by one individual, google
"andrews amp atlanta." only about 1500 bucks or so.

Save your money it's been done. odometergears.com will sell you the gears
for $25 a copy and less if you buy more gears. Also the stock speedo gears,
if you have experienced them, are made of some really soft material so they
don't make noise. The odometergears folks have a new compound that is strong
but really quiet. They also have gears for Porsche and others. I guess there
must be a weakness for the single blade M/B windshield wiper gearbox as they
have a replacement gear for that too. Beware of odometergear.com (missing
the s). A lot more expensive and not as quiet. Excellent customer support!

Barry

You can use the plastic part for Proofing and then use a C&C Machine
to produce the part Or use it to make a mold for casting the part.
I wonder how many Speedo gears I would have to sell to pay for that
set up. H'mm

Could you use some carbon paper to determine if the tapers are the same/ If
you have good contact over the whole area, I'd try it (with LOTS of torque
on the nut). If/when you hear that screaming/slipping pulley, you konw it
didn't work, and have to get the proper pulley for the alt.

2009-03-13 Thread Wilton Strickland
'One I'm living in ain't bad, either, but I wouldn't call it a mansion -
3500 SF Georgian colonial revival built in 1905 (much smaller version of the
Governor's Mansion at Williamsburg, VA); wood clapboard exterior siding,
plaster interior walls, lotsa nice moldings, hardwood floors, 11 ft.
ceilings on first floor, 10 ft. ceilings on 2nd floor; slate roof, widow's
walk on roof. Partial basement; enough room (1400 SF) in walkup attic for
another house. 'Bought this in late '87 just as I was finishing restoration
of the two National Register houses. 'Immediately went to work on this one.
'Been living here 21 years. 'Work continues.

them holy roller types will be the first to screw yo over.

Richard Hattaway wrote:

All this Easley junk has caused me to come out of lurk mode and say something.
Somebody prolly thinks I am gonna defend him, but let me disappoint you

I was a member of his sleazy cheat tool program. This was a well thought out
plan where all the MB enthusiasts in the country sent him money so he could buy
tools to work on his cars. Oh, we were told that all we had to do to use the
spring compressor or the chain crimper was send him a deposit and pay the
freight, and we had the said tool for a fixed period of time. It was acutally
a pretty good deal, because the fixed up front charge was $67 and then all you
had to do was pay postage and you had real MB tools to work with.

The down side of this is when the tool program manager decided he wanted to be absolved
of the issues, he simply quit communicating with the folks involved. At the time, I had
the chain tool in my possession, and he had my $100 deposit. When I inquired about the
return instructions ( send it back to him or send it to the next victim ) I got no
answer. Multiple requests produced zip. He simply vanished as well as the "tool
group" mailing list which was created to track the various tools and answer any
issues that one might have using them. I spent weeks trying to open lines of
communications, directly and thru other friends.

So RE now owns a *very* nice collection of tools for MB's, as well as $100
deposit money from me, and probably other victims as well. You can judge me as
stupid if you wish, it wont be the first time.

Although the Bible instructs against the activity, I can hardly help but judge
Mr. Easley and his actions. Say the devil made me do it if you wish, but if
the self proclaimed evangelical Christian list manager thinks this is the way
to promote his beliefs, he is sadly mistaken. What an ass.

Started work on swapping out my alternator this afternoon -- the one

Until I sold it, yes. It was at that point in time a $167 chain crimper that
could be bought new with shipping for $145 or so. I believe someone here got
it, but don't remember who.. Thought it was Karl S. but not sure. There were
several folks who wanted it when I advertised it.. I took the first $ that
showed up.

Also made a CAD drawing of it, just in case I ever wanted another. It's a darn
accurate drawing if anybody wants to build one.

Re: [MBZ] Bushings- was W123 regular sedan four wheel alignment?

If a vehicle needs alignment, doesn't this usually mean some component
has failed in the suspension (worn bushing, bent part, etc.)?

I noticed Mercedes likes to sell all new suspension rods instead of the
bushings themselves. Is it possible to get new bushings and have them
pressed in? If so, who sells them? Rusty?

I haven't seen a 70s or 80s Benz yet that couldn't use a few new bushings...

You can go up to 1Gb on that computer. You have 2 memory slots.

Good point, that's most of his $167.
The SIR press is something like $150 these days, isn't it?
The one with the star on it should probably be more.

At least Hattaway didn't send Sleasley the $100 after he quit shipping tools
out.

[MBZ] Computer Question

2009-03-13 Thread Richard Hattaway

Since I am out of lurk mode briefly, I have a question for the computer
literate among us.

OH, and I hate people who ask computer questions on MB lists, so just throw the
spear, it will be graciously accepted...

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop, running XP pro with half a gig of ram and a
40 gig hard drive. It works flawlessly most of the time.

I use it primarily for AutoCAD. When it first boots, ACAD is *painfully* slow.
For the experienced cad user, it is devistating. I have already made three or
four moves before the computer wakes up to the fact that I'm there. It takes
forever to catch up.

Looking at the task manager processes list, there is repeated many times the
program svchost.exe. It's used by the LOCAL SERVICE, SYSTEM, NETWORK SERVICE,
etc over and over. At this moment, there are 10 instances of this program
listed in the Processes list. The users are all of the three above listed
ones.

When the machine is pacing very slowly, I will open the task manager and find
that one of the svchost.exe users is occupying 99% of the CPU. I simply delete
it, the computer goes back to being a screaming demon cad machine and all is
well for the day. I notice no change in anything, no loss of any capabilities,
only marked speed increase. The issue appears only on bootup.

Anybody got a clue how I can elimminate whatever is causing this anmomly??
It's no issue to cure, but would be nice to not have to do.

Emails off list are fine, if you don't want to clobber the normal day to day
banter.

Thanks in advance

Richard

[MBZ] Easley be gone... (thankfully)

2009-03-13 Thread Richard Hattaway

The down side of this is when the tool program manager decided he wanted to be
absolved of the issues, he simply quit communicating with the folks involved.
At the time, I had the chain tool in my possession, and he had my $100 deposit.
When I inquired about the return instructions ( send it back to him or send it
to the next victim ) I got no answer. Multiple requests produced zip. He
simply vanished as well as the "tool group" mailing list which was created to
track the various tools and answer any issues that one might have using them.
I spent weeks trying to open lines of communications, directly and thru other
friends.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Towing

One of the Toronto "victims" trying to get a car out of impound was driving
his girlfriend's car on a suspended license in an HOV lane with his parka
draped/hanging over a stick propped up in the front passenger seat to appear
to "qualify" for HOV. Quite the fool. Girlfriend was NOT very happy when
she finally got off work temporarily to come and retrieve the car.
