But the whole point of apprenticing with someone is to learn, among other
things, the techniques of welding; he doesn't yet know how.

[MBZ] I hate grommets

2009-03-22 Thread Rich Thomas
Not Wallace's dog, the rubber kind.

So I got a new little rubber grommet for the antenna on the SD. Getting
the screw out of the bottom of the antenna assembly was a PITA with all
the sh*t my wife had in the trunk, but got that loose. Then trying to
get that thing to fit in the hole with the little ridge to fit over the
sheet metalwhat a total PITA. I used a little piece of wood to try
to work it in, and some silicone lube. Not sure I got it in right, it
was getting dark and I was getting hungry. I guess I can deal with it
when I take the antenna apart to get it working right.

I did unwind with a nice Codorniu Cava, mighty tasty stuff.

at either a brand new Altima or an '07 Infiniti. Dealers for both cars are
falling all over themselves bringing the price down. The Nissan dealers are
$9000 under sticker. The Infiniti guy came down $1000 after my friend pointed
out the car hadn't been detailed yet. He's going very slowly and gettng what

It's still a very desirable and uncommon car -- 29 mpg on the highway

much difference, and if anything, used car prices are up from last
year, not down.

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D?

2009-03-22 Thread E M
I went to the local dealer to help look for the next one too. Thing is, new
car sales are way off, so while they are interested in selling used now, as
used have always brought bigger profits for most dealers, where are they
sourcing the used cars from? Most came from trade ins, and those just
aren't happening as often these days. Even the dealer isn't interested in
something 10 years old or older, regardless of condition. That leaves
everything else out there, from mint to junk up for grabs. From the prices
I've seen, everything is way down. If ppl aren't going to fork over money
for a new car, they're not going to over pay for an old car. Remember, that
'87 300D is 22 years old. No matter how you look at it, that's an OLD car!
Might be nice, but it's a nice 22 year old car.

I paid about $4500 for my high mileage gasser a couple of years ago. It was
very tidy, one owner with full dealer records. Did I over pay, sure. Could
I have got one for a thousand or two less, maybe, but not sure what it would
have cost me in time for the added trouble. I got my money out of it as it
is. What's it worth today, $500, maybe $1000 if the planets are all lined
up? It's nice and clean, but it's a nice clean 21 year old car with 345,000

[MBZ] Electric Windows

2009-03-22 Thread LarryT
I have become even more frustrated with the electr windows. Have been
trying to troubleshoot the drivers window - there is no power to any of the
wires going to the console switch! I have triple checked that the wiring is
done correctly and the motor works.

So I will likely switch to manual window windows.
Getting tired of putting more time into this...

Also - checked the backupLight/neutral lockout switch and it appears to be
dead. It's located on the side of the Auto Tranny where the shift linkage
enters the tranny. Also checked the shift bushings and all are in great
condition - I had replaced them 40k miles ago, perhaps less.

So I need a new switch.

Thanks to all who helped with comments & suggestions -

DO NOT leave the control arm hanging free just supported by a floor jack

This is not funny, as it's compressed several inches at full control arm

Put the jack stand under the control arm and it's an easy job, done it

Well the 1st year for the 124 in the US was 86.  87 is the only year for
the 603 124.  They are great cars as long as A: if it has the original
14 head it has not been overheated and has no cooling system issues, or
B: has had the head replaced with a 17 or higher head. Other normal 124
stuff applies.  For 5k, the car should have perfect paint, NO rust,
perfect interior, no cracks in the dash, all the windows should work,
the AC should work, the climate control should work perfect, should not
leak or burn anything.  If it needs a heater fan, and a seat belt, what
else does it need he is not saying?  Car is probably way overpriced Im sure.

Put the car on jack stands by putting the jack stand in the access
hole in the control arm. You will probably have to compress the
strut some, but not much.

DO NOT leave the control arm hanging free just supported by a floor
jack -- if it slips (which is likely, there isn't a flat spot on the
bottom anywhere) or the jack leaks down, the spring will pop out.

This is not funny, as it's compressed several inches at full control
arm extension.

Put the jack stand under the control arm and it's an easy job, done
it many times now. You can replace the ball joints in the same way.

No. Though I have the Klann, and I have replaced both struts in

Floor jack was the only special tool involved in the strut
replacement.

and goes like a scalded cat, very reliable. A year doesn't make that
much difference, and if anything, used car prices are up from last
year, not down.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. If someone offered me anywhere
near $5K for my '87 I would take it and run, and I bet mine is in
better shape than the one Curt's looking at---W Coast car so no rust,
recent head, recent complete suspension replacement (I think every
early 124 on the road now either has had all the rear links replaced
or needs them).

This is almost true on my CDI... :-( In a normal market, I was at the
perfect point to buy a car. It had already depreciated 50%, and after
that they usually don't depreciate anywhere near as fast. Guess I had

Re: [MBZ] replacing struts on a 201

2009-03-22 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
So did you put the car on jack stands, then put a floor jack under the
arm and just lower it enough to get the strut out, or I guess you
probably didnt even have to lower the jack now that I think about it,
strut just unbolts and you can pull it out regardless of control arm
position.

Jim Cathey wrote:

No. Though I have the Klann, and I have replaced both struts in
the 190D, I've never had to introduce these two items to each other.
Floor jack was the only special tool involved in the strut replacement.

Is there a brand name on it? I've searched for those but can't seem to

either too enclosed or too small to quickly and reliably ignite the

$9700 for my showroom-condition one with 82 kmi in Aug '04. Paint,
interior, rubber door/window seals like new - spent most of it's life in
darkened garage in Winston-Salem, NC, 'til I bought it. I've replaced
alternator (pulley came off), serp belt, belt tensioner shock and, as you
know, evaporator. Still no dings, scratches, rubs, cracks, etc., and has
orig head at 112 kmi. Drives and rides MIGHTY good, but not as good as my
126.

BTW, heater/cooling fan can be replaced from front side under wiper
assembly - don't have to do the evapectomy operation for just the fan,
though that may come later, anyway.

just be a bad belt I guess) otherwise supposed to be real good.
He's asking $5000 obo but admits he knows nothing about the car and was

Don't think rust is that big of an issue, unless the car was poorly repaired
in the past, or not taken care of.

As things are today, I think $5000 for such a car is pretty much wishful
thinking. If it is a $5000 car, it will be near perfect with a big stack of
service notes over the years to back up all claims of work, and rust and
interior won't be an issue, as it will have probably lived indoors when not
out in nice weather. :-)

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D?

2009-03-22 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

Curt Raymond wrote:

Guy on Craig's has one, its been on for several weeks now. Needs a heater fan
and probably a belt tensioner (says it makes a squeak sometimes, might just be
a bad belt I guess) otherwise supposed to be real good.
He's asking $5000 obo but admits he knows nothing about the car and was given
it or something, says somebody told him to ask that much.

I thought about browning the beef, but decided against it as too much
extra work. It turned out wonderful as it is, but I'll keep browning in
flour in mind for next time. This was my first time making beef soup; I
usually only make turkey soup the day after Thanksgiving (a tradition in
our house).

Re: [MBZ] OT: Wolf Stoves

2009-03-22 Thread MG
I don't like pilot lights because they are on all the time. That wastes
fuel. I turned the pilots off on our stove as soon as we got it, except
for the oven, and use one of those pizo spark lighters. No fuel to use
or fill, no matches to find and one hand use. Just pull the trigger when
the gas is on and the spark lights the stove. I got it over 25 years ago
while I was in Europe and it still works just as nice as when new.

Yeah the electronic ignitors are a pain. Fail all the time. I prefer a

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cooking

2009-03-22 Thread Rich Thomas
If you coat that beef in some flour/pepper and brown it in some olive
oil or some such before cooking it, rather than just boiling it
straightaway, you will get lots more flavor and the flour will thicken
things up a bit too as it all cooks.

Veggie soup -- go to the store or farm stand and get whatever they have
fresh. This time of year root veggies are good, as is cabbage. Get some
frozen veggies (much better than canned, and cheaper) like beans, corn,
spinach, kale, okra, etc. and dump it all in a pot. Add a fair amount
of canned tomato juice, paste, crushed, chopped, whatever to give liquid
(and salt, but no extra salt). THEN, the thing that will really set it
off and have people asking "m what is in that?" is to dump in a bit
of chile powder, some Jamaican curry powder, and just a small bit of
cinnamon (you really don't want to taste the cinnamon, but just a hint
will add some really interesting flavor). I like to make mine more like
a stew, not too liquidy, but YMMV. If you REALLY want to make it yummy
good, take some of all those root veggies, cut up in chunks, toss with
some olive oil and garlic and pepper and maybe herbs de provence and
just a touch of salt, put them in a big pan and bake them for 3-45 min
in the oven to roast them up, stir them a coupla times, then toss them
in the soup. The roasting really concentrates the flavors and the
sugars -- this is good too just as a side dish instead of boring spuds
or boiled/steamed veggies.

A nice thick dense bread of some sort goes well with it.

--R

Craig McCluskey wrote:

I can't really top Don's gourmet pickup restoration techniques, but I did

Yesterday, Shirley boiled some beef ribs (which were on sale at the local
Smith's) so she could then freeze them and have them on standby when she
needs something relatively easy for dinner (defrost, slather with barbecue
sauce, broil until nice and bubbly, serve). Well, she had this left over
pot of beef broth. Too good to throw away.

So today I went to Smiths, got some chuck steak for $1.79/#, carrots,
celery, mushrooms, a couple of white potatoes, and Roma tomatoes (we had
onions at home). At home I chopped up the beef and put it in the pot to
boil while we chopped up vegetables. After letting the beef cook for
awhile, we threw all the vegetables in and let it boil for a few hours,
adding replacement water periodically. I then threw in salt, black pepper,
and some other spices which I forget at the moment. Ready in time for
dinner and it was great. We put the remainder in containers and put them

That's exactly what I was going to say, but then I noticed he said it
would not go back into SECOND gear.

What happens when you put it in L while stopped?

A lot of MB's were built that way on purpose, to avoid a tendency
to 'creep' while stopped. Could this be one of them?

The 1979 240D I sold (the Albatross) would _not_ go into first
gear unless you either floored it or manually selected 'L'. This,
also, was apparently deliberate.

Dimitri wrote <<240D with manual everything is worth more >>

I think a lot of people would feel that way too, I sure do.Manual
eliminates so many potential problems and troubleshooting is much easier
IMO. I know some people have electricty in their veins and working on 30
year old electrical systems is 2nd nature - but it's a chore for me. I spent
a couple of hours studying the wiring diagram & making a sketch because I
knew I needed to confirm the wires in the plugs for the console switches
were in the right place in the plugs. I found one which I knew had *not*
been disturbed during the 20 years I've owned this car and the wiring did
not match the WD. But I put it the way the WD said - thinking things may
work better like that. The passenger Front works but not the pass. rear.

Tried the drivers window and immediately popped the fuse - put 12V on the
motor leads thinking it may be shorted and the motor turns like crazy. So
it's not the motor even tho I saw a broken copper wire on the armature.
WTF?? seems like it wouldn't work at all with a broken wire. So now I must
find out why the fuse blew - no easy task IMO -

Oh well, who knows? maybe it'll be an obvious short. ;-\

It seems that a 240D with manual everything is worth more than one with
automatic everything

Hi Ed,
Yeah, all the MBs shipped to the US got the Christmas Tree treatment -
meaning all the bells and whistles. It was very rare to have any choices
when ordering a new MB. Euro models were different. Back in the 80s I
considered a black market car from a dealer in Holland. They sent a brochure
listing their inventory and many of the cars - esp the W123s - came with few
to *no* options. Because of the limited options the costs were much less.
Ths goes back a few years (1986 IIRC) but they offered new MBs for under
$1. I believe the least expensive MBs available in the US were around
$20K. Of course, the Euros didn;t have Sunroofs, AC, ACC, electr windows,
pwr door locks etc, etc.

That's another reason to be cautious if you run across a MB with few
options.

If buying a new W123 I'd want a car like you describe - maunual stuff to
avoid many problems with parts being less expensive if problems did develop.
Of course all that has an effect on the resale value - which is the party
(MB) line about why so few choices are available. But they may have a point.
Sit 2 560SELs next to each other - both identical from the outside - but one
without AC, ACC, cruise, etc. Would complicate things but it wouldn't be
insurmountable.

Take care -
LarryT

Funny you mention that Larry, as I had manual on the brain too this
morning. Everything is working pretty ok on the old W124, but I thought it
would be pretty cool to have one with manual climate control, windows and
roof. I'd love to have one with a mix of basic Euro trim, and also some of
the stuff on the higher appointed North American spec cars. Oh, and a
stick

shift would be pretty cool too!! ;-)

Hi Gang -
I am so tired of troubleshooting my electric window mechanisms on the 78
240D (123.123.12.050680) and am wondering how much trouble it is to
change

over to
manual window winders? Not so concerned about aesthetics - so the
existing door panels can be re-used.

It *looks* simple enough but that's often a trap ;-) BTDT.

Any advice? Or anyone with a set of spare manual window winders laying
around?

Thanks Gang!! Hope everyone is enjoying their wekend -

Instead of using chicken broth, suggest vegetable broth. It is sitting right
there on the grocery shelf beside the chicken broth. And the menu is not
limited to vegetable soup. We whip up a really good pot chili here, except
it uses Boca or Morningstar Farms crumbles instead of beef.
I've eaten vegetarian (technically, pescotarian) three times now, this last
time for more than a year. I am yet to go to bed hungry. And to be honest, I
feel much better when I am not eating meat. Yea, that doesn't work for
everyone, but it works for me.
