The heat shields protect the injectors from excess engine heat, not the
other way around. Probably no harm done.

When I re-did our '82 240D/3.0's injectors, I found it was missing all 5
heat shields. The only problems I noticed was that things were well
carboned up inside the prechamber (I replaced all 5) and that there was
some small amount of leakage past one of the injectors -- visible as
bubbling in the diesel oil I had spilled there.

Re: [MBZ] cartop carriers, gutter mount

2009-04-19 Thread Robert Rentfro
I got the Yakima stuff for my 123 on ebay for about $85 as I recall. Got the
four "towers " and two bars. Very sturdy.
I did, however, pay $200 for a new basket or what ever they call them...that
clamps to the bars, to put luggage in and they I cover it with one of those
spider bungee thingys.
Otherwise I just lay whatever I'm hauling across the bars and tie it down.

OK. One was abandoned, according to the sticker on the windshield.

Actually, the one that was there last month was a 2.5 non-turbo...manual also,

Runs great at 250,000 miles and starts every time. Little rust, wiper
motor needs replaced, and drivers window doesn't operate, it will work
but I had to buy a new glass and I cant get glass back into the window
sleeve, might need a new sleeve. Everything else works fine. I bought
the car to run biodiesel, but making biodiesel is too time consuming
for me so I have no need for the car. It runs great on B100. If more

[MBZ] 87 190D 2.5 Turbo

2009-04-19 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Just arrived home from picking up said car from Philip, who has been
storing it for me. Anyway, its really not that bad of a car,
especially for $400. The worse part about it, other than the bad
tranny, is some bondo areas around the jack points. Its still a jalopy
and needs some work to make it less of one, but it does have a pretty
nice interior once its cleaned up. Guy swapped in some really good
parchment seats (original color was blue) and still needs a few parts to
complete it, which I have. Engine starts right up and runs fine. As
far as the tranny goes, I almost think its just the converter bolts that
fell out. When you rev it up a little, you can hear a little bit of a
rattle. Im sure its not going to be that simple but it almost seems
like it. Also, when you put it in gear, you can hear the rattle sort of
"catch" on something and can feel the car try to move forward a bit.
Will give it a try. I think I will probably try to put this car back on
the road, if for nothing else, an affordable rare 87 turbo car.

Re: [MBZ] OT - IBM Working to Integrate ALL Med Records

2009-04-19 Thread LarryT

Hello All ---
My biggest problem is when an error gets into the system. It might be
incredibly difficult to get corrected I suspect. Like credit report errors
were before congress passed a law requiring them to investigate error
claims. Before that the credit agencies wouldn;t even allow people to *see*
thsir own reports - much less look to see if errors exists.

That was one of the few times the govt stepped in and made things better
for the consumer.

As far as giving meds to people - my wife is an RN a a VA hospital. She
carries a handheld puter that scans the barcode on the patients name band -
to confirm the patient is who he/she is supposed to be (well, the band is
right at least), scans the med., and then it confirms the patient is
supposed to get med X or Y and hasn't recd that particular dose yet. But
that doesn't prevent errors. If you try to remove the person with the
intelligence to confirm the proper med is being given erors will occur.
Can't 'dumb it down" too much without consequences.

Like the old joke about computers making mistakes occur *much* faster
than they used to occur. And the thing about the paperless office is a
joke. We see much more paper than BC (before computers).

But as mentioned - my biggest fear is errors and correcting them. So
far I haven't heard anyone explain how errors wll be prevented or corrected.
And errors can get as many if not *more* people killed than a lack speed in
the ER. Med. personnel can always ask the pat. or his/her companion or
perform stopgap care and then wait for them to wake up. And they have ways
of networking med records now. If they know which hospital you were treated
in previously they can usually get those documents. It seems mst hospitals
are owned/managed by only 2 or 3 corporations.

The truely critical info is often communicated via wrist/neck
bracelets/medallions stating the particular problem such as Diabetes, heart
disease, etc.

Have a nice Sunday -- (avoid the hospital) hehe

There may be nothing that can be done regarding slowing the information
age down, I see this as problematic for a lot of folks.? Now every
insurance company will want this information to evaluate whether or not
you are a good risk (not unlike auto insurance).? Also, there will be
instances where ones information that wish to remain private will do so.?
Like seeing psych doctor once, or having an abortion, having a diesease
that may not be considered "socailly accecptable" (no matter how it was
obtained).? This information, not unlike financial information may not be
best to spread around (for the "benefit" of that particular individual).?
Conversely, there will many instances where the addtional information will
be helpful and that is what we will be told and how this is going to be
sold (or swallowed like medicine that tastes bad but is supposed to be
good for us).? 5 years will probably be tops in when this happens.?

Hey Dwight -
Don't worry about spreading out the time on the kits - they don't
expire - contrary to the expy date on the Lab Forms - you can ignore that.

The way you're doing the Analysis is exactly as we recommend. Once you
have a "Normal" reading there's no need to test each oil change - unless
you're racing. I suggest an analysis every 3rd or 4th oil change. Let me
know if I can answer any questions about the Oil Analysis.

   Couldn't agree more - once you have a great running W124 300D don't let
it get away -

I don't have as detailed records as you do for our 90 300D 2.5t. But our

Speaking of mileage. Our '91 300D 2.5T has been a wonderful car. Once I
took care of the few minor glitches left from a PO it has become
basically

a new car. I hope I can find another as good someday.

We keep complte records of our mileage. Over the past 6 months or so
we've
been getting 28-30mpg. However, a recent fillup gave over 32 mpg. I'm
not
complaining about 32 but I am wondering why we got that' We've only seen
32

once or twice before in our 3 years of ownership.

I can see 28-30 being attributed to driving style - I tend to drive it a
little harder than my wife. But generally, our driving is a constant mix
of

highway, city, her and me. I especially wonder about the 28-32 gap -
that's

a difference of 14.3%. Would the fuel formulation (Winter/Summer)
account

for that difference? Or is that driving style also?

8. With the wood out of the car, examine the staples securing the black
plastic switch armature to the underside of the panel. You will likely
find some of them have loosened, and although you can push them back in,
they will not stay. Use VERY small wood screws to replace the loose
staples. Here, you're on your own - one false move with a too-long screw
and you'll ruin the

top side of your wood.

I would suggest a glue like Shoe Goo.

Re: [MBZ] More windows -- 126 swtich removal?

2009-04-19 Thread WILTON

Following are procedures for removal of 126 center console/switches:

1. Open the ashtray and remove the inner tray by lifting it up and out.

2. This will reveal two small screws securing the ashtray holder to the
console.

3. Remove the two screws (use a magnetic bit to prevent dropping them - if
you drop one, it's HISTORY, lost forever down in the console innards).

4. Pull the ashtray holder up and out to the right, either unplugging the
electrical wire or leaving it dangling out of the way.

5. Pull forward on the small tray in front of the wood panel (between the
ashtray and the console) and remove it

6. Use a thin bladed instrument such as a paring knife or plastic-edged
wedge tool to pry up the plastic bezel around the gearshift lever - be
careful to avoid scratching the wood finish

7. Pull the wood panel forward to free securing tabs at thre rear of the
panel from the console houaisng. As you lift the panel up and out with one

hand, you will have to use the other to remove (unplug) all the wire
connectors from the switches on the panel. There are LOTS of them. You may
have to yank hard on some of them.

8. With the wood out of the car, examine the staples securing the black
plastic switch armature to the underside of the panel. You will likely find
some of them have loosened, and although you can push them back in, they
will not stay. Use VERY small wood screws to replace the loose staples.
Here, you're on your own - one false move with a too-long screw and you'll
ruin the

top side of your wood.

9. Installation is the reverse of the above.

I think the switches on the 300SD need to be cleaned, either non-working or
intermittent. Anyway, I took the switches and panel out of the 300SD
junker, vaguely recall the panel sliding forward then up and over the
shifter, with the little bin removed? The switches come out when the
little ears are squeezed, but you gotta do that from under the panel. I
looked in the maint manual, it is also rather vague on the procedure. Do I
have that correct?

As others have pointed out, the Windows Registry is very important to
how Windows keeps track of where shared libraries and application
specific files are kept. However, it isn't a requirement for Windows
programming, and is up to the individual programmer to whether or not
their application will require the Registry to keep track of items.

Many Windows 9x programs utilized individual *.inf or *.ini files to
keep track of their items themselves. The new Google browser, Chrome,
was written to not only not make use of the Registry, but installs
itself directly into the Local Settings directory of the logged in
user. This way Chrome never triggers UAC and can be installed on any
system even if you don't have admin rights, provided that you have
write access to your own directories.

So the best answer in this question is: Maybe. *If* the application
didn't track itself via Registry, and *if* the application didn't
utilize a form of Serial Key installation that is managed in a hidden
file or the Registry itself, then yes. You can move the executable and
access it directly. However, in these instances you will probably have
to edit the local *.ini file to tell the application where it's new
home is or it won't be able to find supporting files.

Also, some applications are "semi-self aware" and can "heal"
themselves so to speak. Ergo, again, if there is not some overriding
Serial Key piracy measure in place and you move the executable to the
new machine (in fact, as long as the hard drive is attached via USB,
you don't even have to move the executable so long as the application
knows to now find itself in V:\MYDIR instead of C:\) it will see it
isn't in the Registry and attempt to add itself back in.

So for all applications you are wanting to use, have the original
install disks ready, try to run it, and the app will tell you if it
wants to run or not.

Regards,

EdB

Re: [MBZ] Up the down rear window - 1985 300CD

2009-04-19 Thread Jim Cathey
It's the switch! But the opposite side switch doesn't work on the
master
switch side - no lockdown connection. I am not in a posiiton to clean
it,

either.

You can fiddle the wiring to get it all plugged in anyway, if
you've removed the shifter surround. The wires will reach.
(In other words, leave the lockout switch plugged in, and
only swap the plugs for the rear windows.

[MBZ] 1987 300SDL F/Sale

2009-04-19 Thread Limon276
My father is selling his 1987 300 SDL. I was going to put it on Ebay but
not sure what to start it at. Does anyone have suggestions at what I should
start it at? The engine seems good with 200,000 miles on it, but it has
tranny issues in low gears. (any suggestions)slight rust and some paint fade.
Typical south New York stuff. (Car is located in zip 11422) Thanks everyone,
and have a great day.
