Only because it's VERY fresh on my mind. I spent about 4 hours diag my
Dad's TD and it's weak vacuum. Something's leaking vacuum, and it's not
a line, rubber bit, a/c, or door locks.

No, the cats went back in 77 or so. I think it was 75 and

Re: [MBZ] RUNS GREAT,MADE IN GERMANY!!!!

2009-06-05 Thread LWB250

75 and early 76 had the underhood "pre" cats. Temperatures were astronomical
in there, and contributed to premature failure of the numerous bits of flexible
fuel line used to connect the injectors.

You can almost bet on having a good day's worth of work just replacing all the
underhood rubber bits on one of these.

Make sure the stop lever goes down when you apply vacuum to the new
solenoid after installation. It's obvious where it hooks into the
mechanism, but you MUST verify that it's correct.

It's easy to check. Once it's hooked in place and before
you bolt it down try a few pumps of the mityvac. It should
pull down to the IP if it's hooked on right.

Re: [MBZ] RUNS GREAT,MADE IN GERMANY!!!!

2009-06-05 Thread Loren Faeth
My old car VINs and all the rest of the world (non-US VINS) have
always been in numbers, not in any language, other than the language
of mathematics.

Tell me, is this english or German? 110 110 10 225856

Some of my favorite series of numbers are 110 110 10 and 123 123 10!

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300d W124 does not shut off

2009-06-05 Thread Peter Frederick
Replace the shutoff solenoid. Make sure you get the metal one, not
the plastic one that comes up on a parts search, it won't fit.

You will need to remove the windshield washer reservoir to get to the
ALDA to remove it (hold on the flats with one wrench, turn the
captive nut with the other). Wriggle it around til you find the spot
where it will tilt over and come out from under the manifold.

Remove the two screws holding the solenoid on and unhook. You may
need to remove the rack position sensor plug, it has a lock ring that
is TIGHT but will come loose eventually, I don't remember.

Make sure the stop lever goes down when you apply vacuum to the new
solenoid after installation. It's obvious where it hooks into the
mechanism, but you MUST verifty that it's correct.

Re-install the other bits, then start the car ONLY after you have a
14mm wrench in your hand -- if ti runs away you only have a very
short time to get a couple injection lines loose before some thing
breaks I've never had on go wild, but it DOES happen.

One of my projects for this weekend -- shutoff, new fan clutch, R&R
radiator to remove the crap stuffed into the space between condenser
and rad, new engine mounts if I get that far.

Re: [MBZ] 126 brake caliper rebuild

2009-06-05 Thread Peter Frederick
Very easy. You can use brake fluid to push out the pistons (clamp
one in with a c-clamp and pump the pedal, refilling with fresh fluid
if require), or do what I do with calipers that are not really stuck
--peel the boot off and use a pair of screwdrivers to pry out the
piston using the retainer slot for the boot.

Once they are out (I do one side at a time after cleaning the caliper
very well), use a plastic tool or VERY carefully a twisted pick to
remove the seal. Clean piston and bore with brake parts cleaner (no
abrasives, please), coat the new seal with brake fluid, install, coat
the piston with brake fluid and press in (a piece of wood that fits
through the caliper is nice for this, the piston is fairly large and
it takes some pressure to get it over the seal).

Make sure you have the recess in the piston aligned correctly, it's
very difficult to rotate them without the tool. Install the new dust
boot (this can be tricky, as it snaps down around the outside edge
and some parts are hard to reach), then carefully align the new heat
shield so that the partial rim of the piston will stick through the
slot and press it in.

Repeat for the other side, install, put in new pads, flush out all
old brake fluid, and you are done.

Only real "gotcha" is if the piston is corroded, in which case a
rebuilt caliper is in order.

Actually, MTBE is acutely toxic, probably carcinogenic, and causes

Re: [MBZ] 911 erl

2009-06-05 Thread E M
Thanks Mathieu, I'll look into that one too. Looks like I'm going to do
some serious reading up soon. I was using regular Valvoline 20/50 years ago
in my 911, but I could never seem to get it to burn off condensation, and it
would form "honey" in the oil. I switched to Q State because of that, and
the problem went away. Valvoline is what my dealer was using at the time.
I'll look into the VR1 racing oils.

Thanks again.

Re: [MBZ] 126 brake caliper rebuild

2009-06-05 Thread Greg Fiorentino
I did this recently. I used a compressor to blow the pistons out. Not too
much pressure, and put several layers of rag to soften the impact between
the pistons.

Long breaker bar to undo the caliper bolts. I chased the threads with a die
to clean out the factory locking compound, then used blue loctite to
reassemble. The manual calls for new caliper bolts, which Rusty has for not
too much.

My back hurts much less these days from laying under the car in
uncomfortable positions while wrenching stubborn bolts. I am lucky enough
to have 2 21 year-old sons who don't mind assisting dad with wrenching :-).
Of course they get dad to work on their cars too!

The right front brake has a slight drag so I'm going to rebuild the
front calipers. Who has any tips and BTDTs for rebuilding the
calipers? I can remember to keep it very clean (don't scratch the
cylinder walls or pistons) and use gentle pressure (air or fluid?) on
the pistons to remove them. Is this a fairly easy process? TIA all,

Technical terms...

"open" means the electricity encounters a gap so it stops
flowing. Like a burned out fuse.

"short" means a "shortcut" past the proper destination,
therefore the intended work doesn't get done. And it usually
means very high current flow so wires melting or fires
starting are a real possibility.

To avoid catastrophe, a fuse can be put in series so if the
current flow gets to great the fuse opens and shuts off the
flow. Annoying, but better than catastrophe.

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300d W124 does not shut off

2009-06-05 Thread Luther
Try hooking your Mityvac directly to the shutoff. The car should die
before you finish the second squeeze of the handle. If you see oil
coming through the Mityvac line (don't ask me where I've seen this
before), your shutoff is bad. It should hold a vacuum and take less
than 10hg to stop fuel flow.

Ed,

Check out Valvoline's VR1 racing oils. These still have ZDDP. It comes
in 20W50, 50, and 60 weight. Possibly more, but those are what I
generally see. +/- $5/qt.

I have been using the VR1 oil for a number of years in a variety of
motors, including the S90 in my racer. It is not a synthetic and should
work well in your SC. That oil had the lowest average temperatures when
I used to hot rod a 16v VW with a digital oil temp gauge. It seems one
of the few oils out there that has remained consistent over the 10
years or so that I've been using it regularly.

Good to read about Shell Helix. Sounds like an oil worth looking into

Re: [MBZ] 911 erl

2009-06-05 Thread E M
Thanks Roger. I have a large stock of Quaker State 20/50 which I've used
for years. The last of it is in the car now, so I have to decide soon what
to do. I've never used a synthetic in any car yet, but I'm thinking about
switching them all over. I remember reading that the M1 still has good
levels of zinc, but are still a bit below what is recommended for the old
air cooled 911s. I'll look into the Shell Helix further.

Thanks again,

The problem in my experience (once you have ruled out leaks in the
vacuum lines feeding the shutoff unit, of course) is usually a
hairline crack in the nipple on top of the unit where the line
connects. I never heard of anyone adjusting one or replacing a
diaphragm or any other internal parts, only replacing the shutoff unit
as a whole. However, R&Ring it is a minor pain since it's squeezed
under the intake crossover pipe. I fixed mine in situ by careful
application of epoxy around the outside of the nipple, and it's worked
fine since then for a couple of years.

Yeah, but all those performance parts will drag down your fuel economy.
Better add a few of those "Coexist" stickers to bring it back up; I

[MBZ] anyone want an E320?

2009-06-05 Thread Loren Faeth

Our E320 is officially for sale now.

1994 E320, Green, no rust. Body in good shape, but clearcoat peeling
on roof, hood and LF fender top. Some tears on seat bottoms, but
"repaired" Runs good. No problems with Trans, Tires fair, on 8 hole
OE rims. (i've had Blizzaks on it, but keeping them and those
wheels) ~170k miles. Cat was cut out, and replacement pipe is
somewhat noisy. (sounds like a 6 cyl ricer) Sunroof opens and
closes correctly. Overall, it is a good solid car, with some
cosmetic issues. It is a good daily driver. $2500

Driving: It is tight, powerful, and shifts correctly. It is fun to drive.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel prices jumping up

2009-06-05 Thread Curt Raymond
Yup we're up about $0.30 in a month.
Diesel is just slightly less than regular at most stations.

The price of oil has been rising slowly and with the onset of the driving
season I think the stations are looking to make a little for a change.

Our prices here in Los Alamos have gone up noticably since the beginning
of May (graph attached).

Anyone else seen this phenomenon? Any ideas why it's happening? The
beginning of the summer driving season maybe?

The spring base comes off pretty easily, their numbers might not
be all that skewed. You know Rusty can get pre-sewn new covers,
right? I paid $500 for the full set for the SL, all seven pieces.
You might have been able to DIY with official factory MB-TEX
pieces (sewn by GAHH) for about the same price. (I haven't put
mine on yet, I've got a lot stacked up in front of doing that.)
Depends on if the sale is still on, or maybe whether GAHH tanked
anyway.

Don't think so. Just as expensive to replace the entire cover.
And maybe that's not so expensive. Try Rusty. Or goop some
glue over the pinchy bits. Or cut them with a knife so that
the edges don't meet anymore and it stops pinching.

Actually I have not checked the other side of the armrest, but on mine at
least the center and driver's side piece are new. Mine was cracked badly on
the top, right where your arm sits on it. I need to go out and take a
better look today. When I picked it up yesterday it was raining very hard

the fittings don't always fit, so they need to be fiddled.

A friend came over last night, bearing beer and a couple
of cans of secret sauce, and we recharged his Axxess again.
Seems to last about two years, and has been doing so for
maybe six years since the AC shop diagnosed it as having
'massive leaks' and needing a complete replacement to the
tune of a couple of grand or so.

In fact, here at the beginning of its third cooling season
it was still working, just a bit weak. We got him down to
39 degree vent temps whilst sitting in the driveway with
a fine water mist on the condenser. Only in the low 80's
ambient, though.

It costs him just about the same for the beer as for the
stuff for the car. He seems happy with the deal.

[MBZ] seat finally repaired

I finally took the spring base I got from Kaleb last year and hit the

the bill was a bit skewed. They put it at $200 parts and $20 labor for
replacing the spring base with mine and putting in the new pieces. They had
it for 6 hours, but it is hard to imagine they could do the seat removal,
base replacement, disassembly and sewing in the new pieces and reinstall for
$20, or that the replacement pieces were $200. Doesn't matter, I guess.

Last week I recharged the A/C on my truck. I had done this many times
before with marginal results. I was going to take it to a shop to get
it checked, but was going on a trip so just wanted to hook up a can and
get some juice in there. Anyway, while doing that, a little bell rung
and I remembered someone saying that the fittings don't always fit, so
they need to be fiddled. So I fiddled the fitting, and quid malberg in
plano, a lot of juice went in, a/c was BLOWING ICE COLD. YEA!
