She can, but she's an oboe player. (What do you do with

When we met she was playing a souzy. The tuba is

Re: [MBZ] OT: question on self-winders for the watch geeks

2010-01-03 Thread Peter Frederick
I wouldn't say that they have loose tolerances, quite the opposite.
They are very well made (and machine assembled these days as well).
Precision fit counts for much more in watches that loose fit, since
it both reduces wear AND makes timekeeping easier. I suspect the
real reason they go so long is good synthetic watch oils that stay
put and don't gum up.

You should be able to regulate a Seiko to within 10 seconds per day,
although that may vary some with actual wearing conditions and how
you move your arms. The 6xxx movements have a quite large balance,
and should keep very good time. The 7xxx movements have a smaller
balance, but should do almost as well.

I'm still working on mine to get them regulated properly since I
don't have a timing machine and have to use the time reference from
www.time.gov over a day or so, but I've got one nearly dialed in.
The other I'm setting will probably need to be cleaned, it's hard to
regulate so far.

Re: [MBZ] OT: question on self-winders for the watch geeks

2010-01-03 Thread Gary Hurst
30 seconds or so getting you 4 hours from a dead stop is pretty good. most
seiko automatics cannot be hand wound, so all you can really do is where it
and see. a fully wound self winding watch should run about 30 hours of the
wrist, but 30 seconds won't get you anywhere near fully wound.

normally i would say that any vintage watch ought to be serviced, but seikos
are a bit different. i have heard of soldiers who purchased seiko divers in
saigon while serving in vietnam who have worn them to the present day
without service. i suppose it is simplicity and loose tolerances at work.

my thought is for you to wear it a few days and see how it runs. see how
accurately it runs as well (be forewarned that a variance of 30 seconds to a
minute per 24 hours should be considered acceptable for this watch. a
vintage low end automatic seiko is no threat to ever win an accuracy
contest). after a few days, i'd take it off overnight to see if it is still
running strongly in the morning. if it passes these tests i'd just wear it.

another caveat for any vintage watch is that no matter what it might say on
the watch, do not presume any level of water tightness. presume it will be
leaky and act accordingly.

if your watch has a quick set on it, there will be a stop when you pull out
the stem between the stem being in and the stem being pulled all the way out
for setting the time. spinning one way sets the day and the other the
date. i usually move it to the day before with the quickset and then finish
by moving the watch hands as i'm paranoid about something.

here is a look at your movement compared with the current version available
from seiko (which is what i'm wearing as a type this)

Re: [MBZ] OT: question on self-winders for the watch geeks

2010-01-03 Thread Peter Frederick
First and foremost, what are the numbers on the back? There should
be a 4 digit - four digit number on there. The first one is the
movement ID and the second is the case ID. Need to know the movement
number to help with fast set of date and day, they differ.

Second, four hours run time for 30 sec of shaking is pretty good.
Likely it's partially wound from vibration in shipping -- typically I
get them actually running. Standard reserve time is 50 hours for a
Seiko 6xxx or 7xxx watch. None of the modern mens size had a manual
wind, so you have to wear them to wind them. Greatly simplifies the
internals, so this is actually a good thing. Wear it for a full day,
and it should run for two more -- I get to alternate two of my
favorites this way. If you get less than 24 hrs reserve, it needs to
be cleaned. If there is no history with the watch, assume it needs
to be cleaned and oiled (although they will run for 30 years without
any attention at all), just make sure you get a disassembly and
proper oiling and not a "one step" solvent with oil bath, as the
watch will stop running soon if you do (improper lubrication of the
winder)

Lacking the movement ID, try pulling the stem half way out (they
usually have two positions). Rotating the crown will then advance
the date in one direction and MAY advance the date in the other,
depending on movement.

Also try pushing in on the crown. On the 6119 (some models) and the
7xxx movements, the date will advance, and on some models light
pressure advances the date and firm pressure advances the day. Note
that the day will have either a second language or blank between each
day, and pressure on the crown or turning it pulled out to the first
position will advance it only "half way" each time -- have a care you
don't end up with the day set in French or Spanish! It will advance
two steps each day as it runs.

Seikos are lovely watches -- very well designed and well made, if not
fancy inside.

Another nice program that instructs, but does not eliminate stuff is
Mike Lin's startup.cpl which is a control panel application that tells
you what processes are scheduled to start up at each boot cycle. It
is instructive to see the processes that are tasked to start up. From
that, you can remove start-up status of applications you do not
recognize and then if the system runs fine, you might decide the
application is bogus and needs complete removal. I can recall an
application from 10 years ago - jupiter something - that I would
detect from time to time. Do the search in the registry for jupiter
and delete all instances - ruthlessly - and then any variant of
jupiter in the file structures. Many malware used to be quite visible
and could be seen via careful looking around and removal. Of course,
while linux is not completely without malware, it is far above the
susceptibility of windows.

This is a good program. I used it last week to clean up a co-worker's
machine that had the "Malware Defense" infection. Also used Spybot.
They both found different things, and it took half a dozen scan/clean
cycles before the scans reported "no problems found"

One odd thing, initially I could not install MalwareBytes. The
installer program did nothing. I saw the process in the task list, but
it was doing nothing and eventually vanished. I installed Spybot but it
would not run with the same symptoms. I surmised that the malware was
watching for executables running by name; I changed the name of the
MalwareBytes installer exe and was able to run it and install it. After
installing, I also had to change the names of the actual MalwareBytes
executable and the Spybot executables in order to get them to run.

I had to do all this in "Safe Mode" because the computer would slow to
an unusable crawl in normal mode.

One does not need the special tool "assembly cage" or "assembly sleeve"
that
is called for in the service manual. Also, removing the camshaft gear is
also not necessary (at least on my engine - haven't checked the chain
stretch yet so maybe I have a really looong chain helping out here).

I was out in the garage working on my '87 replacing the belt tensioner,
when
that project came to a sudden halt due to a tool shortage (don't own a
12mm
hex key). Decided to mess around with the '95 as I'd gotten some marking
paint and I thought it was a good time to remove the camshaft gear.
Pulled
the valve cover and marked the gear and chain position, then while
waiting

for that to dry I started pulling on the timing chain at the IP timer to
see
how necessary the special tool was. To my surprise, after just a few
minutes of fiddling the IP timer came right out. Installed the new one,
and
then re-installed the injection pump. Still need to hook up all the
injection pump connections, but she's back in place.

So, spent a few satisfying hours in the garage, and now I have a good
excuse
to go tool shopping tomorrow.

Remaining work on the '95:

Hook up all the injection pump connections

Repair deteriorating wire insulation in the engine bay (liquid electrical
tape)

Remove old fuel return line bits from injector nipples, install new lines

Diagnose/repair the engine missing and low power (new fuel filters first,
then maybe injectors or delivery valves are the culprits).

Re-install all the intake and crank-case ventilation piping/gaskets

Sounds like your computer is infected with Ad-ware (and who knows what
other stuff). (I'm presuming this is a spontaneous pop-up window and not
email.)

If it's advertising itself without you having asked for it, I would say
it's not legit. Legitimate companies do not need to operate that way.

Alex,

I've go a Seiko similar to that one. Won it in a raffle when I was
in Viet Nam. Wore the thing for 15 years. It's now buried some were
in my stuff.
Like OK Don said wear it for a few days then see how long it stays running.
May need a good cleaning and oiling.

To set the Date by not advancing the hands around 24 hrs.
When you get to the point where the Date Changes roll past 1 O'Clock
then Reverse back to 11 then forward to 1. Repeat.

Enjoy your watch.

day of the week other than running the hands all the way around the
dial over and over?) and shook it gently for 30 seconds or so to wind
it up (feeling the pendulum or whatever it is jiggle back and forth
inside as I did so). Then I set it down. I looked at it about eight
hours later and it had evidently run for about four hours, then
stopped.

Is this normal? How long can you expect a self-winding watch to run
if it's not on your wrist? If not normal, does this thing just need
cleaning and lubrication, or something more---and how much can I
expect to spend to get it up to specs?

Our "village idiot" -- I shouldn't say that, since Mercedes is cached. Let
me rephrase. The individual to whom we outsource our computer stuff loaded
up Malware Defense on a co-worker's computer after she got a nasty virus.
Her computer immediately went from being somewhat-fast to crawling slowly on
its knees. We (meaning her, under my instruction) uninstalled Malware
Defense and things immediately got fast again.

You can't go wrong with a good (as in supported on a daily basis) antivirus
program and Spybot.

I can't help you with too much, but I can tell you two things:
1. That appears to be new enough to have bi-directional winding, but you still
aren't going to fully wind it with 30 seconds of shaking.

2. It should run for forty hours or so if fully charged unless it needs a clean
and lube or a new mainspring.

Wear it for a couple of days, and see how long it runs after you take it off on
the 2nd night.

I'm not one of the watch geeks, but I've owned a couple of self winders
-- Omega and Mido. On mine, you turn the stem to wind it, pull out the stem
to set the time, and push the stem in from the default position to increment
the date one day at a time. IIRC, 30 secinds of shacking won't wind it much.
However, the manual wind function should let you get at least a day out of
it.

Re: [MBZ] 86 SDL, no power seat adjustment, both sides

2010-01-03 Thread harry watkins
Does anyone know of an online site to see wiring diagrams for an 86 SDL?
Also, if you have the car, would you look in the fuse box and see if its
what I have in mine? Hopefully I'll be able to attach a picture of mine

Still no fix on my seat adjustment problem. The manuals that I have appear
to not cover my 86 SDL. One example is the book IDs a seat relay at slot
"H" in the fuse box but what I have is a fuse holder that serves as a fused
jumper.

Thanks
Harry.

Subject: [MBZ] 86 SDL, no power seat adjustment, both sides

Where do I start? I get nothing on either seat with key on, running, door
open and in or out of seat.

I have (part of) an "Electrical Troubleshooting manual " that covers 1986
through 1991. Its missing a bunch of pages in the first part but has
diagrams that seem to cover my problem.

I'm confused (no kidding) that the manual shows a relay "H" in the fuse
box, but in that location in my fuse box there are two red fuses.
However, FYI this is one of the early models that did not have the
external fuse 16 update. (but soon will)

I see fuses a, b, 15 and 17 along with a diode and the mystery relay are
involved. I have replaced the fuses with no change.

Help if you can and please treat with kid gloves. You are dealing with an
electrical ignoramus.

Thanks
Harry

PS: This is an SDL that went away over two years ago and has returned
refitted.

Share the design with us all - I want that for my 240D with clutch.
It is the high sitting SUV that throws the light in my rear view that
I also hate.
The rearward light would be a "back-off" warning. I like your plan.

The side vents should give warm air anyway...

I've never had a side one apart but the center segment is held in by a screw

Assuming its the same as an '85

Grab the vent itself with a pair of pliers (you might buffer the jaws with a
piece of leather or something) and pull straight out which will pull the vent
out, then reach in with a wire and close the flapper thats right there behind.

With any luck once you're in there you'll see whats wrong. IIRC the lever is
attached to the flap by an allen head bolt which may have loosened over time.

that won't close. Which is kinda a problem when it's 20 deg F

[MBZ] After Action Report - '87 300TD accessory belt tensioner replacement

2010-01-03 Thread Max Dillon
Dieselvolk,

Finished the job last night, and I am VERY pleased with the reduction in
noise from the engine bay. I'd read about others reporting such happy news,
I'm glad to add my name to that list. I have known this needed replacement
for the last 10k miles or so, and ordered the part about two years ago from
BuyMBparts.COM way back then. The pulley wheel was just out of the plane of
the rest of the pulleys and the belt, and by carefully pushing on the lever
with a stick I could make a change to the engine's noise at idle. However,
recently the car developed some really nasty noises at around 900 RPM that I
was convinced were due to a loose exhaust bit or some other piece of the
motor that was loose.

I'd also order the 8mm stubby hex in socket form 'special tool' for R/R the
viscous fan clutch. It is too stubby in my opinion for loosening the
screw, but just fine for applying 45 Nm of torque. I needed a strap wrench
to hold the pulley still for the R/R of the fan clutch.

In addition to the lack of a 12mm hex, there was one other problem. The new
tensioner did not come with an end cap, so I'll need to order one of those.
Rather irritating that the cap didn't come with it. I fashioned a temporary
cover from a piece of Tyvek-like material and a zip tie; that should keep
the road grime out of the pivot bearing workings until a new cap arrives.

Very respectfully,
/s/

No. It was not retracting the antenna, even with a new mast. I tried to

Called the local Sears, and they said they don't stock it.

Visited HF this p.m. and picked up a 9 pc set for 12.99 that has smaller
sizes plus 12, 14 & 17mm. Also picked up the fuel injection pressure tester
I need for my wife's car, also 12.99. However, her Infiniti has developed a
new problem - the starter seems to be going out. Most starts it works fine,
but occasionally it really turns over too slowly like the battery is going
dead. Already had the old battery tested and it was very weak so a new

'Bout 20 years ago, I bought an old/"antique" crystal chandelier that needed
some rewiring. In taking it apart, I found that the insulation was
missing/bad in the same area of all the wires in a place only about a 2" to
3" long. I didn't know about shrink wiring insulation then, but I had some
good silicone caulking. I gooped a good coating of the caulking onto each
wire individually. 'Still working fine.

I get it at the local Lowes, comes in a small can with applicator brush
built into the top. The first can I had was rather runny stuff and
tended
to really flow well but left a good coating, which was impossible to
clean
off but remained flexible. This new can I just bought is really thick
and
stays where you put it. Dries fairly quick. I don't know how well it
will

stand up under the hood of a car, but it sure is an easy way to repair
damaged insulation on wiring. It's one of those products that's so cool
you

just have to buy it when you see it.

I'm going to give it a try, but I'll start budgeting for a new
harness...

I had a couple of T30s that fell prey to that malady. It's the
exception rather than the rule as far as Thinkpad quality, though.

Looks like Tiger Direct has a lot of refurb T60s, this one for example:

Bump the RAM up to max and you have a heck of a nice computer for

I'll agree with the thinkpad comment, but I'll caveat it by saying to
go with (I think) a T4x or newer; all T30's and many of the T2x's were
prone to DIMM slot failures.

Btw, if you do not mind the weight, the T6x's have a magnesium basket
around the BACK of the LCD (not many laptops have any protection for
the LCD backs...) which prevents breakage with the lid closed.

Has anyone tried it on the cracks in the dash?

I get it at the local Lowes, comes in a small can with applicator
brush
built into the top. The first can I had was rather runny stuff and
tended
to really flow well but left a good coating, which was impossible to
clean
off but remained flexible. This new can I just bought is really
thick and
stays where you put it. Dries fairly quick. I don't know how well
it will

stand up under the hood of a car, but it sure is an easy way to repair
damaged insulation on wiring. It's one of those products that's so
cool you

just have to buy it when you see it.

I'm going to give it a try, but I'll start budgeting for a new
harness...

The IBM T-Series, which I deployed and used at IBM for many years was about
the most bulletproof laptops of it's time. The -p series (T4Xp or T6Xp
machines) have better graphics, but, in general, a workhorse.

You can buy them at the IBM Employee Purchase Program website,
http://www-304.ibm.com/shop/americas/content/home/store_eppus/en_US/epplogin.html
use the S/N 235697 and the name giaimo and you're in. (good for friends and
family)

[MBZ] 190e dash vents

2010-01-03 Thread Jim Arnott
that won't close. Which is kinda a problem when it's 20 deg F
outside. The levers that are supposed to close them do nothing. Any
suggestions for repair without removing the dash? Does anyone have a
scan of the parts book that will show me the relevant pieces?

As always, thanks in advance.

When looking at used motorhomes, you often find rebuilt engines in examples that
would be regarded as very low miles if it were a car. When you look at diesel
Vixens (2.4L BMW turbo), they ALL have rebuilt engines in them, many within the
last 5,000 or 10,000 miles (quick, sell it before it blows again).

Yeah, when I was looking for my first MB diesel, I was tempted by one of these
that was on the local MB stealership's lot. When I made some inquiries about
it amongst my then MB resources - they made me aware of the rather checkered
history these things had for heads and head gaskets.

Lovely pictures, thanks!

Am I interpreting correctly that your antenna was binding, and to fix
it you replaced the gear teeth? Doesn't look too bad, except the
four-hour spread in time stamps. :)

Thanks,

[MBZ] CL Portland, OR: Surplus WWII anti-aircraft searchlight and other goodies

2010-01-03 Thread Alex Chamberlain
http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/1534990373.html - Lawn ornament
for Wilton ;)

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1534777210.html - Green on
green 115 for Kaleb!

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/1534755679.html - Seems like a
screaming good deal on a 280SEL 4.5, if it runs and drives OK.

http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/cto/1534945720.html - Nutcase with
S-class, exhibit A. Rusty 116s with broken ACCs are a dime a dozen in
Portland. I guess those wire wheels account for the extra $7000 over
market?

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1534864003.html - Nutcase with
S-class, exhibit B. What is this guy on about with the "supension
package normally found on cars exported to the Middle East and Africa
providing a firmer ride with more ground clearance"? I emailed him
asking for the VIN so I could put it in the EPC, but no heary back
yet.

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/153497.html - Nutcase with
S-class, exhibit C. Again, about three times local market price for a
decent diesel 126. At least you know the seats are leather, since the
fronts are covered with mock sheepskins to hide the cracks.
