Re: [MBZ] OT: question on self-winders for the watch geeks
I wouldn't say that they have loose tolerances, quite the opposite. They are very well made (and machine assembled these days as well). Precision fit counts for much more in watches that loose fit, since it both reduces wear AND makes timekeeping easier. I suspect the real reason they go so long is good synthetic watch oils that stay put and don't gum up. You should be able to regulate a Seiko to within 10 seconds per day, although that may vary some with actual wearing conditions and how you move your arms. The 6xxx movements have a quite large balance, and should keep very good time. The 7xxx movements have a smaller balance, but should do almost as well. I'm still working on mine to get them regulated properly since I don't have a timing machine and have to use the time reference from www.time.gov over a day or so, but I've got one nearly dialed in. The other I'm setting will probably need to be cleaned, it's hard to regulate so far. Re: [MBZ] OT: question on self-winders for the watch geeks
30 seconds or so getting you 4 hours from a dead stop is pretty good. most seiko automatics cannot be hand wound, so all you can really do is where it and see. a fully wound self winding watch should run about 30 hours of the wrist, but 30 seconds won't get you anywhere near fully wound. normally i would say that any vintage watch ought to be serviced, but seikos are a bit different. i have heard of soldiers who purchased seiko divers in saigon while serving in vietnam who have worn them to the present day without service. i suppose it is simplicity and loose tolerances at work. my thought is for you to wear it a few days and see how it runs. see how accurately it runs as well (be forewarned that a variance of 30 seconds to a minute per 24 hours should be considered acceptable for this watch. a vintage low end automatic seiko is no threat to ever win an accuracy contest). after a few days, i'd take it off overnight to see if it is still running strongly in the morning. if it passes these tests i'd just wear it. another caveat for any vintage watch is that no matter what it might say on the watch, do not presume any level of water tightness. presume it will be leaky and act accordingly. if your watch has a quick set on it, there will be a stop when you pull out the stem between the stem being in and the stem being pulled all the way out for setting the time. spinning one way sets the day and the other the date. i usually move it to the day before with the quickset and then finish by moving the watch hands as i'm paranoid about something. here is a look at your movement compared with the current version available from seiko (which is what i'm wearing as a type this) http://people.timezone.com/msandler/Articles/Workbench/Seiko/Seiko7005.html On Sun, Jan 3, 2010 at 3:02 PM, Alex Chamberlain wrote: > Hursty et al.---I just bought a nice old Seiko on eBay. Re: [MBZ] OT: question on self-winders for the watch geeks
First and foremost, what are the numbers on the back? There should be a 4 digit - four digit number on there. The first one is the movement ID and the second is the case ID. Need to know the movement number to help with fast set of date and day, they differ. Second, four hours run time for 30 sec of shaking is pretty good. Likely it's partially wound from vibration in shipping -- typically I get them actually running. Standard reserve time is 50 hours for a Seiko 6xxx or 7xxx watch. None of the modern mens size had a manual wind, so you have to wear them to wind them. Greatly simplifies the internals, so this is actually a good thing. Wear it for a full day, and it should run for two more -- I get to alternate two of my favorites this way. If you get less than 24 hrs reserve, it needs to be cleaned. If there is no history with the watch, assume it needs to be cleaned and oiled (although they will run for 30 years without any attention at all), just make sure you get a disassembly and proper oiling and not a "one step" solvent with oil bath, as the watch will stop running soon if you do (improper lubrication of the winder) Lacking the movement ID, try pulling the stem half way out (they usually have two positions). Rotating the crown will then advance the date in one direction and MAY advance the date in the other, depending on movement. Also try pushing in on the crown. On the 6119 (some models) and the 7xxx movements, the date will advance, and on some models light pressure advances the date and firm pressure advances the day. Note that the day will have either a second language or blank between each day, and pressure on the crown or turning it pulled out to the first position will advance it only "half way" each time -- have a care you don't end up with the day set in French or Spanish! It will advance two steps each day as it runs. Seikos are lovely watches -- very well designed and well made, if not fancy inside. Re: [MBZ] OT "Malware Defense" antiviral software
Another nice program that instructs, but does not eliminate stuff is Mike Lin's startup.cpl which is a control panel application that tells you what processes are scheduled to start up at each boot cycle. It is instructive to see the processes that are tasked to start up. From that, you can remove start-up status of applications you do not recognize and then if the system runs fine, you might decide the application is bogus and needs complete removal. I can recall an application from 10 years ago - jupiter something - that I would detect from time to time. Do the search in the registry for jupiter and delete all instances - ruthlessly - and then any variant of jupiter in the file structures. Many malware used to be quite visible and could be seen via careful looking around and removal. Of course, while linux is not completely without malware, it is far above the susceptibility of windows. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The installer program did nothing. I saw the process in the task list, but it was doing nothing and eventually vanished. I installed Spybot but it would not run with the same symptoms. I surmised that the malware was watching for executables running by name; I changed the name of the MalwareBytes installer exe and was able to run it and install it. About a year ago, a fellow who builds computers suggested I give MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware a try. He was surprised that it only found a couple of slightly unfriendly cookies on my machine, it had been finding stuff on most of the used computers he'd tried it on. One more thing (as Columbo used to say). Watch out for something called Personal AntiVirus. That is the virus that Maureen got on her computer that caused so many problems. If you get that, take your laptop immediately to a professional and get it scrubbed off. Our "village idiot" -- I shouldn't say that, since Mercedes is cached. Let me rephrase. The individual to whom we outsource our computer stuff loaded up Malware Defense on a co-worker's computer after she got a nasty virus. Her computer immediately went from being somewhat-fast to crawling slowly on its knees. We (meaning her, under my instruction) uninstalled Malware Defense and things immediately got fast again. You can't go wrong with a good (as in supported on a daily basis) antivirus program and Spybot. Re: [MBZ] CL Portland, OR: Surplus WWII anti-aircraft searchlight and other goodies
A trucker driving only the tractor on I-5 in the L. A. area 'bout 35 years ago flashed me like that with an ultrabright light mounted rearward above his cab. I had been a bit late in dimming as I approached him from the rear. Since then, I've wanted a rearward facing light like that many times, especially in the last few years of the superbrights that some drivers seem to be so proud of. Many evidently have forgotten how to use a dimmer switch, or likely don't care. I can't help you with too much, but I can tell you two things: 1. That appears to be new enough to have bi-directional winding, but you still aren't going to fully wind it with 30 seconds of shaking. 2. It should run for forty hours or so if fully charged unless it needs a clean and lube or a new mainspring. Wear it for a couple of days, and see how long it runs after you take it off on the 2nd night. Re: [MBZ] OT: question on self-winders for the watch geeks
I'm not one of the watch geeks, but I've owned a couple of self winders -- Omega and Mido. On mine, you turn the stem to wind it, pull out the stem to set the time, and push the stem in from the default position to increment the date one day at a time. IIRC, 30 secinds of shacking won't wind it much. However, the manual wind function should let you get at least a day out of it. Re: [MBZ] 86 SDL, no power seat adjustment, both sides
Does anyone know of an online site to see wiring diagrams for an 86 SDL? Also, if you have the car, would you look in the fuse box and see if its what I have in mine? Hopefully I'll be able to attach a picture of mine Still no fix on my seat adjustment problem. The manuals that I have appear to not cover my 86 SDL. One example is the book IDs a seat relay at slot "H" in the fuse box but what I have is a fuse holder that serves as a fused jumper. Thanks Harry. Subject: [MBZ] 86 SDL, no power seat adjustment, both sides Where do I start? I get nothing on either seat with key on, running, door open and in or out of seat. I have (part of) an "Electrical Troubleshooting manual " that covers 1986 through 1991. Its missing a bunch of pages in the first part but has diagrams that seem to cover my problem. I'm confused (no kidding) that the manual shows a relay "H" in the fuse box, but in that location in my fuse box there are two red fuses. However, FYI this is one of the early models that did not have the external fuse 16 update. (but soon will) I see fuses a, b, 15 and 17 along with a diode and the mystery relay are involved. I have replaced the fuses with no change. Help if you can and please treat with kid gloves. You are dealing with an electrical ignoramus. With any luck once you're in there you'll see whats wrong. IIRC the lever is attached to the flap by an allen head bolt which may have loosened over time. [MBZ] After Action Report - '87 300TD accessory belt tensioner replacement
Dieselvolk, Finished the job last night, and I am VERY pleased with the reduction in noise from the engine bay. I'd read about others reporting such happy news, I'm glad to add my name to that list. I have known this needed replacement for the last 10k miles or so, and ordered the part about two years ago from BuyMBparts.COM way back then. The pulley wheel was just out of the plane of the rest of the pulleys and the belt, and by carefully pushing on the lever with a stick I could make a change to the engine's noise at idle. However, recently the car developed some really nasty noises at around 900 RPM that I was convinced were due to a loose exhaust bit or some other piece of the motor that was loose. I'd also order the 8mm stubby hex in socket form 'special tool' for R/R the viscous fan clutch. It is too stubby in my opinion for loosening the screw, but just fine for applying 45 Nm of torque. I needed a strap wrench to hold the pulley still for the R/R of the fan clutch. In addition to the lack of a 12mm hex, there was one other problem. The new tensioner did not come with an end cap, so I'll need to order one of those. Rather irritating that the cap didn't come with it. I fashioned a temporary cover from a piece of Tyvek-like material and a zip tie; that should keep the road grime out of the pivot bearing workings until a new cap arrives. 'Bout 20 years ago, I bought an old/"antique" crystal chandelier that needed some rewiring. In taking it apart, I found that the insulation was missing/bad in the same area of all the wires in a place only about a 2" to 3" long.
