Watch that you don't lose the index pin on the camshaft -- my brother
managed to dislodge it, the cam broke, bent a valve and wrecked a
brand new valve guide. Not sure how he did it since I wasn't there,
but watch out -- it may pull out if you pull the sprocket, for instance.

My brother's SDL now runs great, it's back at the tranny shop to find
out what went wrong with the rebuild.

Brilliant and abundantly clear! Just one followup Q:

*You can take it from here, but I like to plug things before putting it back
in the tank to check the low fuel light and the gauge. Gently tip it up and
down to see if the gauge changes position. If so, you're done.*

Does this mean I should reconnect the plug and tilt the unit around with the
key in the #2 ignition position and watch for changes in the gauge? Or
should the engine actually be running while this test is carried out??

Well, it's settled. The title for the TX truck shows 112K miles, and
"mileage exceeds mechanical limits". So I'll just leave it as is, and call

In Indiaian, it's only fraud if you mis-represent the mileage. If the

I believe that all states have some similar mechanism for recording that the
mileage shown on the odometer is not correct -- it's not a crime for the
odometer to read incorrectly, it's a crime to represent the odometer reading
as correct when you know it's not.

Re: [MBZ] W123 stuck fuel sending unit

2010-09-06 Thread LWB250
This is an easy one -

If you pull the carpet up from the cargo area, you will see a large (3"-4")
plastic plug or cap. Pry this up and you'll be looking at the top of the
sending unit.

Get a big crescent or channel lock pliers, and after you unplug the wiring
harness, unscrew the sending unit.

WARNING!

Remove it very, very slowly. Why? Because it will be full of fuel and the
bleed hole(s) in it are very, very small. Best to do this after you have run
the tank down as low as possible, as it minimizes the potential for a mess.

As you withdraw it from the tank you'll hear the fuel dripping, so be patient
and wait for it to stop.

Once you have it out, find a clean place to disassemble the sending unit. I
like a workbench with a couple of junk towels I can put things on as I remove
them.

On the bottom is a small (8mm?) nut. Unscrew this and then carefully remove
the metal disc that covers the bottom. After that comes off, there will be a
plastic disc that has all sorts of grooves in it. I'll explain the reason for
this later.

Once the plastic disc comes off, the metal cylinder that is the outside of the
sending unit can be removed. Do this carefully.

After the metal tube is removed you'll be able to see the business parts of the
sending unit - the float and guide wires. Get some good quality electrical
contact cleaner and carefully clean the wires, sliding contacts, and brass disc
on the bottom of the float that triggers the low fuel lamp.

If either of the wires are broken, it's usually at the solder joint on the
bottom. Reflow this joint with good quality 60-40 solder, if possible. If the
wires are broken elsewhere, you may be out of luck, as they are nichrome and a
specific resistance to properly control the gauge.

It sounds like your float is stuck or the wipers are making poor or
intermittent contact. A good cleaning will take care of this.

After cleaning all the parts, reassemble in the reverse order. Take note that
the plastic disc on the bottom has to mate with the flat metal disc in order to
work properly. What this does is meter the flow of fuel in and out of the
gauge sender, so you don't have a wildly swinging gauge due to the float moving
up and down constantly. Fuel has to make it through this labyrinth of passages
to get in/out of the float chamber, so the level changes very slowly.

You can take it from here, but I like to plug things before putting it back in
the tank to check the low fuel light and the gauge. Gently tip it up and down
to see if the gauge changes position. If so, you're done.

[MBZ] W123 stuck fuel sending unit

2010-09-06 Thread andrew strasfogel
The fuel gauge in my 1985 300TD read "full" for 2 weeks while the miles
piled on. For this period, the gauge returned to zero with the engine off
and then steadfastly remained pinned at F with nary a flicker as the miles
accumulated and the days marched by. Finally, at 353 miles I broke down
and filled up the car with 14.6 gallons of diesel. That was Saturday.
Today (Monday), with 150 miles having passed without a change in the gauge,
bingo! - I noticed that the gauge had moved down to 3/4 full. Since then,
the gauge has reflected normal fuel consumption and now reads < 1/2 full.
 Two questions:

1) Does this erratic behavior reflect a faulty gauge or stuck sending unit?

2) if the latter, how do I remove the sending unit to inspect and perhaps
unjam or clean it?

TIA, as usual.

On my 300D, there is a pair of raised ridges on the bearing housing. Bend
a stiff wire that fits into the holes in the fan housing and use those
two ridges to hold the wire while unscrewing the 8mm bolt from the hub.
Should be fairly easy with a short piece of pipe over the 8mm Allen key,
which is the way I do it. You will have to use both hands to unscrew
the bolt.

[MBZ] 91 350SDL water pump

Any tips on R&R of water pump.

'Don't see, yet, how I can easily and "safely" hold the fan coupling it from
turning. The written directions mention a "counter holder," which I don't
have. It's probably something that slips over the fins securely enough to hold
it from turning without break/deforming them.

Because it only leaks at fairly high rpm. At idle or stopped, no leak.
All the coolant dribbled out while you were driving, leaving spots on the
highway, but not the drive.

I've had several water pumps do this over the years, it's hard to see
what's going on if they don't leak out the upper weep hole, as the
coolant drains away from the bottom one pretty fast.

Zone Alarm is not strictly an antivirus program. It does not look for
virus signatures in files you download, etc. What it does is block
unauthorized network connections to/from your computer.

> Any suggestions out there? I seem to get 6 months to a year out of a
> security suite before it gets penetrated.

I'd take a hard look at the sites you are visiting, what you are
downloading, and be extra cautions with email attachments. Also be sure
your Windows Firewall is active. Getting a virus every 6 months seems
quite extreme to me if you are running defensive programs. I think I've
gotten one in about the last 10 years.

I have been running Avast! as my real-time anti-virus for the last few
years, and it seemed to do a good job. I've since switched to Windows
Security Essentials since it's free (Avast! has a free version too, but
you have to re-register every so often).

I also periodically scan the system with Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware, and
remove whatever it suggests. I find that all these programs will find a
few things that the others did not, so it seems that having several
different defenses in place is better than relying on just one.

Another good idea is to replace your local "hosts" file with the one
from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm This will block most ad
tracking you as you browse; it also blocks a number of domains that are
known to contain malware. Note, if you do this you will find that the
"paid links" in Google search results no longer function, but I never
click those anyway so it's not an issue for me. You will need to
manually update this every few months as it's constantly updated.

Finally, it's a good idea to put a router between your cable/dsl modem
and your computer. Even if you aren't using wireless or multiple
computers at home, the router gives you a private network between your
computer and the internet, almost like another firewall.

Re: [MBZ] Virus attack on the Information Minister

2010-09-06 Thread Brian Smyla
I myself have seen this malware, along with a stealthy exploit that will
randomly redirect google search result clicks. As previously mentioned,
System Restore may resolve the issues. Some of the malware will corrupt
your restore points (as happened with MY system), leaving you unable to use
them. Here's how I got rid of the malware:

The first bit of malware mentioned does a lot of nasty things, including
antivirus popups, disallowing execution of certain important applications,
and blocking sites where anti-malware software can be downloaded. The
second bit of malware (TDSS rootkit) doesn't really let you know that it's
there, other than redirecting your google searches behind the scenes. The
main symptom is that when you click on a google search result, you will be
sent to an advertising page that may or may not be related to your original
search. To rid yourself of these, do the following:

Note - I still run XP, so these instructions are for XP. They should also
work on newer versions of Windows, but specific instructions related to
navigating in Windows may vary. You will need access to a non-infected
computer.

1. From a *non-infected* system, download the free version of Malwarebytes'
anti-malware, AND the mbam-rules.exe file which contains the latest
anti-malware rules for the software. The link is:
http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/

2. From the same *non-infected* system, download the file TDSSKiller.zip

3. Copy these three files to a USB thumb drive

4. Boot your *infected* computer into Safe Mode without networking (also
disable your wifi via the hardware switch if possible, and unplug any
Ethernet cables)

5. Copy the three files to the *infected *computer.

6. Execute / unpack the three files onto the *infected *computer.

7. Run the malwarebytes anti-malware application, using the full scan
option.

8. Get a cup of coffee, but continue to watch the application - you may need
to reboot during the scan. You can leave after 20 minutes or the first
reboot, whichever comes first. This may take some time.

9. Select the option to remove all malware detected.

10. The system will reboot. Be sure to boot back into Safe Mode.

11. Run the TDSSKiller application.

12. After following the instructions and rebooting, your system should be
back to normal.

This is what worked for me regarding these two pieces of malware. Again,
YMMV.

I had a bad head gasket on an 84 SD which only leaked out of the side of the
engine; the only traces were a couple of faint vertical whitish yellow
"stripes" on the block just above the oil pan (not the sump pan). I think the
stripes were deposits left behind when all the water evaporated from the
coolant.
