Or maybe stream of consciousness as a literary form? (I once wrote an
essay in a college literature course saying that stream of consciousness

Or maybe full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?

Update - the van worked fine for SWMBO following the scare and running in
second only event. Son had LOTS of stuff that we HAD to take to MTU, so
we

took the risk and loaded up the van to the extent that I couldn't see out
the rear window. Son's 190D was almost as full. We left Tuesday AM for
Houghton, MI, arrived Wednesday evening. Found an apartment Thursday, and
finished setting him up for the coming year Friday. Head back to OK Sat.
AM,

got home 2 hours ago. 2363 miles.
The van performed flawlessly. The VERY slow driving through MI was
compensated with 25 mpg usage by the van, which is an all-time high for
it.
Son's standard tranny 190D 2.2 averaged 42 mpg over the trip up. This car
is

3 years older than he is - and also performed flawlessly.
Now, back to the daily grind for some rest!

2011-08-22 Thread OK Don
We purchased the '97 new. It's had 1 water pump, 2 idler pulleys/tensioners,
1 starter, 2 batteries, 1 axle seal, and a couple sets of tires in the
115,000 miles. It's using about a quart of oil and a quart of anti-freeze
every 2500 miles now. No leaks. Thed rivers window would rather not come
back up after being lowered (takes 30 - 50 switch actions to get it closed
again), 1 side door lock doesn't actuate sometimes, and the drivers door arm
rest and panel is pulling off the door. Other than the dent in the rear
bumper cover due to a backing-up incident at Kaleb's previous house, it's in
pretty good shape (if you ignore the powering and departing paint on the
roof).

I don't trust the Autozone computers.

Last battery I bought was for my '85 190D, they wanted to sell me
some

dinky little thing, 700cca. I said "No, I want a Group 49" they
insisted.
I told them I had an '83 240D (not a lie, I did have one) and they
tried

to sell me an EVEN SMALLER(!) 600cca unit.

I finally told them I had no car at all, had walked in that day and I
wanted a big battery to run my boat. They let me pick whatever I
wanted.

I'm so glad they built a new Autozone just over the border in tax
free
New Hampshire. When I went yesterday they asked if I needed
anything, I

responded "as long as the oil is in the 'oil zone' I'm all set." They
laughed and allowed as how that was probably where the oil was. I see
I'll have to train this store to carry more M1 5w40 but thats not all
that hard.

Well, according to AutoZone (and the smaller Mercedes battery that

Mostly snake oil. 99% diesel/petroleum/benzene. Running a tank of b100

I don't trust the Autozone computers.

Last battery I bought was for my '85 190D, they wanted to sell me some

insisted.
I told them I had an '83 240D (not a lie, I did have one) and they

to sell me an EVEN SMALLER(!) 600cca unit.

I finally told them I had no car at all, had walked in that day and I
wanted a big battery to run my boat. They let me pick whatever I
wanted.

I'm so glad they built a new Autozone just over the border in tax free
New Hampshire. When I went yesterday they asked if I needed anything, I
responded "as long as the oil is in the 'oil zone' I'm all set." They
laughed and allowed as how that was probably where the oil was. I see

Well, according to AutoZone (and the smaller Mercedes battery that was
in
there), the 124 320E is not supposed to use a Group 49 battery. The
Group
49 did fit, however, so that's what I got. I would guess that the

In the 124 CD, there is a procedure to "reset" the vacuum pump. I
had never heard of this, or done it. There may be a similar
procedure on the 126. Should be 80- something on the CD

Last week I installed a new battery and since than the pump for the central

out, I reset it by momentarily disconnecting the #13 fuse.
Does not work this time.

I like the idea, but I had the same reaction. I'm quite sure a

I also suggest it is not a fair comparison as I suspect that Mercedes
generally get better care than GM products that are considered to be
throw away items.
However, I also think that the newere north american vehicles do stand
up better than the older ones did. My 10 year old F150 has 150K miles on
it now and shows no real signs of aging so far. I do not know much about
its early life as it had 90K miles on it when I bought it. I have been
reasonably good to it but I don't know how well the original owner
treated it.

I had just under 300,000 miles on my 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 when I sold it in
1999. So, that's 15 years. I suspect, if you wait until 2013, you will find
1988 model Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, Chevy's, and Buicks that have 300,000 miles,
are 25 years old and work well. 1988 was a watershed year for GM because of
the 3800 engine. GM cars begin to improve dramatically starting in 1988 and
continuing through the 1990's.

HA! Well, Rich, I have no doubt you know how to identify a cap and rotor. I
guess this just shows my ignorance. I didn't know that GM still had a truck
engine with Cap and Rotor as late as 96. My mistake.

But _which_ engine??? Enquiring minds want to know! And it
really could use more than 5 speeds in the transmission.
Maybe a _pair_ of 5 speeds. *grin* Twin stick shifting is a
trick.

Not that it will matter. It's too far away and I don't really
need it. Besides, I'd rather have a Mog.

And I'd need to bring along a step ladder so the kids could get
firewood into the bed.

I don't know about elsewhere, but Tirerack doesn't sell the H-rated Altimax HP
in a tall enough 14" size. You'd want 185/70 or 195/70.

Kaleb has used the T-rated Altimax RT, which is available in 195/70-14. It looks
like the Pirelli P4 Four Seasons is the customer survey preferred item in the
all season touring tire class, but it costs more.

Based on Mitch's looking, I bought a set of General Altimax RT
P205/70 for a wagon. I picked those partly because it's one of
the very few available (last year) with a extra-load rating.

I like them.

We might suggest to those being elected a year from now that they each

   Mercedes/GMC 5-Speed Diesel Army 6x6 Cargo Truck w Winch

Date: 2011-08-22, 8:35AM

This is a low-mileage GMC Army "deuce and a half" 6x6 truck,
professionally converted
to a Mercedes 6-cylinder diesel truck engine and 5-speed manual
transmission. It is
currently fitted with a large cargo bed and conveyor belt for spreading
manure, mulch,
etc., although it has never been used in this configuration. It also
comes equipped with a
heavy-duty front PTO winch. You'd look a long time to find another setup
like this. If you
want a great, rust-free vehicle that will go anywhere and carry a big
load of firewood, etc.,

this is the rig for you.

So in 2041 a restored '87 Cimmaron will be worth $100,000 adjusted for

I know 14" tire choices are pretty limited these days. What are good,
reasonably-priced all-seasons for a 123 or 126 with bundts---ideally
some that might handle occasional snow and slush with a few bags of
cat litter in the trunk? Mitch, are your favorite Generals available
in the right size? (I can't remember the model name...)

HA HA HA!

I made my own for the 500SEL out of pine and zip ties. I can't see
the greater shock absorption of rubber making any difference if all
you're going to do is drive the car onto and off of ramps, or even
move it around your property a bit to work on it here and there. I
don't know anything about the 6.3, but on the Hydramat-equipped cars
you jam the blocks between the body next to the shock tower and the
nearest control arm, not exactly fragile parts of the car.

everything correctly.

Here is the method that the manual says I need to do. It seems to be
a common issue that does require a real time code scan tool.

I am thinking that the reading you are seeing isn't cam retard
but actual distributor timing that the ecu is trying to attain.

Below is the text from GM Service manual for 1997 Chevrolet C
   Pickup 5.0L, 5.7L, and 7.4L
According to this you don't set the timing but the timing offset.
You need a "Scan Tool" that plugs into the truck and can read
the data from the trucks computer.
Besides from that, it looks like a normal timing procedure.

   Setting Timing
   Camshaft Retard Offset Test
The ignition timing cannot be adjusted. The distributor may need
adjusting to prevent crossfire. To insure proper alignment of
   the distributor, perform the following:

With the ignition OFF, install a scan tool to the DLC.
Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature.

   Important
Cam Retard Offset reading will not be accurate below 1000 RPM

Increase engine speed to 1000 RPM.
   Monitor the Cam Retard Offset.
If the Cam Retard indicates a value of 0° ± 2°, the distributor
   is properly adjusted.
If the Cam Retard does not indicate 0° ± 2°, the distributor
   must be adjusted.
   Adjusting Camshaft Retard Offset

With the engine OFF, slightly loosen the distributor hold down
   bolt.
Important: Cam Retard Offset reading will not be accurate below
   1000 RPM

Start the engine and raise engine speed to 1000 RPM.
Using a scan tool monitor Cam Retard Offset.
   Rotate the distributor as follows:
To compensate for a negative reading, rotate the distributor in
   the counterclockwise direction.
To compensate for a positive reading, rotate the distributor in
   the clockwise direction.
Repeat step 4 until 0° ±2° is obtained.
   Turn the ignition OFF.
Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 3N.m(25 lb. ft.).
Start the engine, raise engine speed to 1000 RPM and recheck
   Camshaft Retard Offset.

Not familiar with that engine, but those are the most likely.

Also possible you have a bad intake gasket at that cylinder, so it's
sucking air. Easy check -- spray some carb or brake parts cleaner
over the area lightly while it's running. If the miss goes away and
it speeds up, you have an air leak.

Actually, there have been very few collaborations between Chevy and Cadillac.
They both made some disastrous cars all on their own. The Cimarron was, of
course, and exception. But, most of the cross division models were between
Buick, Pontiac, Olds, and Chevy. Cadillac tried to stay above the other lines.

By the way, the newer Cadillacs are actually amazing cars. Cadillac is really
turning out some serious sports cars.

tested the line that runs to the injection pump (shut-off, I guess) and
it would hold 10" of vacuum and then it sounded like a regulator was
releasing anything above that. In other words I could pump it down to
10" and then I would hear a bit of a wheezing sound on subsequent pumps
and it maintained about 10" of vacuum on that line.

I had just under 300,000 miles on my 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 when I sold it in

1988 model Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, Chevy's, and Buicks that have 300,000 miles,
are 25 years old and work well. 1988 was a watershed year for GM because of

A properly functioning 116 pump has a one way valve connecting the two halves of
the pump. The brake booster side can draw vacuum from the accessory side, but if
the check valve is working the accessory side cannot draw vacuum from the brake
side. MBZ considers the brake booster to be the important function here.

To follow up, I did verify that the brake booster holds vacuum. I
tested the line that runs to the injection pump (shut-off, I guess) and

I did try pumping down the rest of the accessory circuits, with no
success. I don't know how big the reservoir is and whether I just
didn't try long enough (hands were getting tired) but suspect that there
are probably other leaks in the doors locks or ACC.
