[MBZ] Internet shutdown for some?

2012-02-17 Thread Gerry Archer

FWIW: The following was posted on another list by a British member.
Gerry
---
A disturbing Ministry of Trade report circulating in the Kremlin today is
raising serious concerns over the United States plan to shut down
significant parts of the Internet on 8 March in a move many Russian experts
warn could be a prelude to massive attacks.

The feds received a court order in November, 2011 to replace
"rogue" servers with surrogate servers to operate "just long enough for
companies and home users to remove DNSChanger malware from their
machines."

Rod Rasmussen, president of Internet security company Internet ID, stated
that there are still millions of PCs infected with DNSChanger. "At this
rate, a lot of users are going to see their Internet break on March 8."

[MBZ] OT: iDVD is taking FOREVER!

2012-02-17 Thread Michael Canfield
I am attempting to make a dvd. I have a Powerbook g4 and an LG ge24
external drive as the internal is shot in the mac. I am using Magic iDVD
and it is taking forever. I set it all up and pressed the burn button 10
1/2 hours ago and it says it still has over 8 hours to go. It is probably
right at the max capacity for the dvd and I expected it to take some time
but wow!
Is this what I should expect from the equipment I have? Any suggestions
to make it go faster? I am making these dvd's for Toni as she has been
commissioned to make a collection of videos and pics on dvd for the High
School Cheer team. I will be weeks making them at this rate. Once I have
one done would it be faster to use a copy program of some sort to make the
rest? We can't afford to upgrade to a faster computer now and no matter
how slow the mac goes I refuse to attempt this on my PC desktop.
Any tips, tricks, comments or criticisms are welcome.

Our G4 will make a DVD in about an hour IIRC, I think its (internal)

It's the authoring with attendant compression that makes it slow. Think
ripping MP3s from CDs, only much worse. Michael's observations are about

Not familiar with MagicDVD or whatever it is, but it sounds like there is some
compression or transcoding going on that is probably slowing things down. Add
to that an external USB drive and you have a formula for some sluggish

Was this board more than one layer of circuitry like computer motherboards?

Re: [MBZ] OT: iDVD is taking FOREVER!

2012-02-17 Thread Jim Cathey

A G4 CPU is really quite capable, but not if the software
was written, sloppily one might say, for a _much_ faster
CPU. See it all the time. Done it myself.

You optimize your SW until it runs 'fast enough' on your
test system. Then ship it. Nothing to do with how fast
it is potentially capable of doing the job.

The index-maker for my web site was a shell script I wrote
a few years ago, it scans *.html and makes an index .html
file. Not real fast, but fast enough. Took just a hair
under a minute to make the two index files on this 233 MHz
G3. Lotsa seds, greps, and awks. I knew it stunk when I
wrote it, but it wasn't for public consumption.

I finally got sick of it and re-did it in C. Takes just
a hair over a second to do the same job. I believe it actually
took less time to write it in C than it did to write (and
debug!) it as a shell script.

Typical of C vs script, though, the script showed early
promise very quickly, but debugging and tuning it took
forever. The C program did NOTHING until it was almost
finished, but fell into shape quite quickly.

[MBZ] OT speaking of electronics

2012-02-17 Thread Rich Thomas
Last night I retired my 15yo Sony receiver (at least for a little while)
as it does not decode DTS sound, which Blu-ray discs all seem to
contain. Found a newer similar Sony rcvr from a local guy for $75,
seems to work OK except it won't see my AppleTV optical sound output,
which the other one was doing OK. I still need to work on that. The
retired unit has basically been running continuously, with occasional
short breaks, for the 15 yr since I got it, and could still shake the
walls with the 28yo (or is it 29?) Advents and 15yo Boston Acoustic back
channels.

At least some stuff seems to last.

But . one of the reasons that our furnace has lasted as long as it
has without rusting is that the pilot light keeps the heat exchanger
warm and dry througout the summer. We also run a dehumidifier in the

410 pass is closed, you will have to do 12 or 90.

It is a just drive it. Bushings and fluid would be simple. I have three
clusters on the shelf, some other parts I pulled at PnP years ago. Not going
to six million $$$ man the car, but can do some fix.

Chrome is old, the whole car is old, and not been loved the way a garage queen
would have been. I could find pnp parts with enough time. No hard top, so no
defog issue. Fans work and buttons work on ACC. No indication that AC works,
but at least it does not blow blazing hot air all the time.

Seats are not shot. Could use sheepskins. Carpets are old and really could
use replacement. Old horse hair smell and musty carpet. There is rust in the
hollows of the rear shelf. Not too deep. Enough metal there to save with
POR-15, then paint. Floor has small rust spots that would be fine with sand
and paint.

Don't quote me on this Wilton, but a guy had a new one years ago when I was
in the local Benz club. As I remember, it had different shocks and
springs, rode a bit lower, more aggressive bolstering on the seats, and I
think a different head (24 valve ?). Rims were different too. I didn't
look that closely at it, as there were usually other "things" distracting
me when we all got together, like that silver Gullwing! ;-) I remember it
being quite expensive at the time$73,000 or something in that range.

Sportline was a factory option on 124s and 201s ( at least). Stiffer
suspension, quicker steering ratio, different interior with rear bucket

I would challenge this statement.

My natural gas consumption cost-wise was under $25/month in summer with an 80
gallon (yes, that's 80) water heater that had a pilot.

So that's both the gas for the pilot as well as what it took to heat the water.

[MBZ] OT: iDVD is taking FOREVER!

2012-02-17 Thread Curt Raymond
Probably normal, thats a REALLY old computer. The big question is what the
input format to iDVD is, if its not already mpeg2 at the same datarate as you
are wanting on DVD its compressing the video and that is whats slowing your
computer.

The G5 was a big deal when it came out because it was so much more powerful
than the G4 and made things like this so much faster.

and it is taking forever. I set it all up and pressed the burn button 10

right at the max capacity for the dvd and I expected it to take some time

Is this what I should expect from the equipment I have? Any suggestions
to make it go faster? I am making these dvd's for Toni as she has been
commissioned to make a collection of videos and pics on dvd for the High

one done would it be faster to use a copy program of some sort to make the
rest? We can't afford to upgrade to a faster computer now and no matter
how slow the mac goes I refuse to attempt this on my PC desktop.
Any tips, tricks, comments or criticisms are welcome.

Get DragonBurn.

Also verfiy that the drive is working correctly, I've had any number
of LG drives spit the bits on me without notice, leading to exactly
your problem.

You should also do a permissions repair -- if file pernissions are
goofed up, all sorts of weird things happen.

How is the drive connected? That may be a significant bottleneck.
Our G4 will make a DVD in about an hour IIRC, I think its (internal)
drive can only burn at 1x. This is just a ripped copy of a
commercial

DVD, for example, not authoring anything.

Don't quote me on this Wilton, but a guy had a new one years ago when I
was

in the local Benz club.

Glow P's carbon up like anything else in that motor.
Carbon is a conductor.

Re: [MBZ] who wants a W124 Sportline?

2012-02-17 Thread E M
Nice thing about the sportline cars back then, they still followed in that
same spirit of the earlier 6.3, in that they were very subtle, and you kind
of had to know what you were looking for to pick one out. Unlike a lot of
the current AMG models, that go like stick, but have a good amount of flash
bolted on as well, just to make sure everyone knows you paid extra for
(more likely leased) the "fast" model. Mercedes can no longer call any of
its hot rod models, Q cars. Sad in ways, but tacky and vulgar are now
fashionable.

Me too, just delete the badges, and that silly carbon fibre that is all the
rage for interior trim. What is it with people thinking clear coated carbon
mate is a cool option for interior trim. If it's such a good look, maybe
they should just stop painting Corvettes and start selling them in plain
fibreglass with clear coat.

I know taste is very much subjective, and no doubt mine has been open to
question at times too. I love anything with lots of cylinders and power, I
just prefer it packaged in something a bit more elegant and understated.
Then again, I've never been a "hey, look at me kinda guy". :-)

If GM did it right, a carbon fibre Vette with a proper polish and uv
protectant clearcoat would likely sell quite well. Witness the naked
stainless steel on the DMC-12.
