Re: [MBZ] OT: Medical Records: was Light Reading of crash data

2012-04-24 Thread G Mann
Way back in 2005 I designed and copyrighted a medical file system that had
a patient card which remained with the patient and held the entire patients
medical history from birth [potentially]. The attending Dr. would have
access to the patients medical record and be able to see any previous
treatment or prescribed meds and would make entry on that patients
electronic card for the treatment he provided. Concurrently, for his own
patient file [and insurance [CYA] ] he could copy what treatment HE/SHE
provided to the patient but could "read only" any other Drs. treatment.

The card would come to the Dr. with the patient and leave with the
patient.. It would be the sole ownership of the patient and thus the sole
responsibility of the patient. If the person were in an accident and
rushed to ER, and had the med card on them, the emergency treating staff
would have the entire patients history available to them for immediate
reference [perhaps saving lives and certainly saving time in that "golden
hour" window of trauma treatment]. By design, only certified medical
personnel would be able to access the information on the card.

Some parts of the system I devised are now in use, however, as a total
system it has never been implemented.. Major point is, the patient record
stays with the patient and anything that is done with or to the patient
remains his/ her sole and privileged legal property.

I thought the program design had merit when I devised it, still do. There
are other features in the design which speeds up payment to Drs. from
insurance companies, for example, and does the medical coding now required
as an international standard.

Just a few million short of taking it all to market. So it goes on the
shelf along with my stuffed DoDo bird.

Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas?

2012-04-24 Thread TE
UPS destroys their package cars when they are retired from service. First,
the package car is stripped of its badging, decals, etc. Next it is painted
white, crushed to pieces and photographed.

There are still a lot of vehicles in service from the mid 90's and even many
of the new package cars still come equipped with the Spicer 5 speed. The new
automatic transmissions are prevalent on the smaller size package cars (e.g.
P500, P570), but the reason behind them is not to lure drivers who cannot
operate a manual transmission. Every service provider who goes through
driver training at UPS is trained on a specially designed 'training' package
car, equipped with a manual transmission.

The only package car I looked under the hood of (1995 vintage) had a Spicer
5 speed and a Cummins 6BT with P7100 inline pump. At the time, about ten
years ago, I really wanted to get my hands on a retired package car like
that. But it seems UPS does not sell its delivery trucks like Frito-Lay
does.

I recall the fellow who drove the Inglewood City Lines bus I took to and

He had to double-clutch every shift and did a very good job of it.

Yes, the privacy issues are real, and I don't think are being taken
seriously enough. On the other hand, when my father was being treated for
trigeminal neuralgia (sp?), I took him to six different doctors, due to
referals. I had to fill out the demographic data, medical history, current
issues and treament to date six times, and three of the doctors worked in
the same hospital system. A bit of electronic medical records, shared
between the doctors with our permission, would certainly have made it a
better experience, and might have reduced the false-starts in the process.

LNG has always been a part of the UPS fleet, though in limited quantities
and only in select areas (e.g. the Pleasantdale GA hub). Typically, the size
of the package car (correct UPS term) dictates whether or not the engine is
diesel or gas. The larger package cars (P1000, P1200) always have diesel
engines, whereas the smaller package cars (P500, P570) have gas engines.

I haven't seen a feeder truck with LNG until that picture. Usually we would
try to incorporate those technologies into vehicles that are more "customer
facing", so to speak.

Re: [MBZ] OT fedora server

2012-04-24 Thread Dieselhead

No DCs in the existing setup. Just peer to peer Good info to know. Thanks

Also consider using the free VMware Converter to create virtual
machines for each of the running servers and workstations. You can
run the free VMware player to boot them up to make sure they are
working.

I have had issues in the past converting domain controllers. They
stop working after the built in certificates expire. Not sure if
that's still an issue. If so install from scratch then promote to a
DC and move all the roles over manually.

My suggestion on the hydro lock business is maybe partly because I read some
marine forums and it is somewhat common with inboard outboard engines. The
water cooled exhaust manifolds rust out and flood the cylinders.
I should think it unlikely on an MB unless the head gasket is gone or the head

answer questions in the past and they were completely wrong. I posted a
correct answer on their web site (I think it sent an email or something to

clacking in the rear on a 300D (bad CV joints) or something about a diesel
smell in the car on a 300SD (clogged vent on tank, etc.). Might have been
both. Never heard anything.

I went to their shop once when I was a student in Cambridge, their prices

guess diagnosing problems on the phone is hard to do, and even harder when

I would agree. Their show is more entertainment than true diagnostics,
although I will give them some credit on cars they appear to have direct
knowledge of.

Sadly, Mercedes diesels are not in the category, based on responses I have
heard them offer for various maladies over the years. While it would be far
from entertaining, I almost want to hear them say, "I don't know" rather than
pitch some half-assed idea at someone who truly expects "expert" advice from
them.

2012-04-24 Thread Randy Bennell
Well, obviously, there are no guarantees, but, if it won't hold
pressure, then it is leaking somewhere. If you cannot see evidence of
leakage under the hood, then it may be sufficient evidence to cause you
to look further into it.

One other alternate idea might be to disconnect the heater core and
flush it out with water to rid it of the anti-freeze and then run for a
bit with the heater core out of the system and see if the smell
disappears. I am not familiar with your particular car but if there is a
heater hose in and one coming out, one should be able to connect the two
hoses together under the hood and leave the heater core out of the loop.

It pressurizes when it is working, no? (When the coolant is hot). That
is probably the situation -- leaking out a pinhole. If your pressurizer
has a gauge that you can watch (and if it is a pinhole will leak down
faster than a bad connection of the pressurizer?) I suppose that would
confirm it. The other way to do would be to put some hoses on the HX
connections, but put some sort of scented water in there, and pressurize
those. If you detected the scent inside then you would know. Or some
sort of gas you could detect (hmmm, R134 and a sniffer?). Or just
air/water with a gauge on some connected hoses?

Is there any access to the space the HX is in? I was thinking one of
those cheap stalk cameras from HF that you could poke up in there to see
if there is any leaking going on.

back in after replacing the blower fan... which was a saga all its own),
with a recently re-padded and crack-welded driver's seat. Transmission's
worn, but the engine is sound. Trunk's always wet (Almost certainly a bad
rear window seal, and I'm not even going to try replacing it, honestly).

I've just accepted that the car's a beater, at this point - there's no way
she's worth the expense and labor of even half a restoration. But she runs
well (well, except for just now)...

(And I've never been able to turn the car over manually - the belts always
slip. That said, given that the engine was running perfectly smoothly the
day before it wouldn't start, and stopped "normally", I really don't suspect
it's seized.)

Hi Stuart

So, is the 2 tone original? I think I have seen something about that on
the web but have never seen one in real life.
My dash is ok except for the speaker grill in the middle. The cover is
off of it, but I have it somewhere and could likely put it back on.

My driver's seat back needs help. The horsehair pad is falling apart and I have
been waffling about the choices for repair. I need to do something before I
ruin the MB tex.
I think my trans is ok. It shifts a bit hard but I think it just needs to be
adjusted a bit. It basically does not want to shift up unless I back off on the
throttle a bit - esp when cold.
I get a bit of moisture in the trunk on occasion but I think it is the seal on
the trunk rather than the window. The trunk lid seal is intact but not really
attached. It needs to be glued on.
My car is getting a few rust bubbles on the lower extremes of the rear quarter
panels. It had been patched before I got it I think and is coming back to
haunt. I will ultimately fix it when it gets a bit worse.
My car looks good from a distance. It was painted before I got it and is not a
wonderful paint job but still looks pretty good from a few feet back - mostly
because it is a very nice red color with a white interior.
I am not getting too excited about all that. I don't consider my car a beater
but I did not get it to put in car shows. I want to use it and it will
therefore never stay perfect in any event.

I'm pretty sure I didn't remove the steering wheel. I don't
recall having to open Freon lines, but that car did not have a

Also consider using the free VMware Converter to create virtual machines for
each of the running servers and workstations. You can run the free VMware

I have had issues in the past converting domain controllers. They stop working
after the built in certificates expire. Not sure if that's still an issue. If
so install from scratch then promote to a DC and move all the roles over
manually.

Someone set me straight on this please, isn't the cabin air taken from the
air box that resides behind the battery tray? Feed of fresh air comes from
the grill just below the wipers? There is an access hole from that air box
that drains into the engine compartment but it's only about 1.25 inch
hole.. just the right size for a mouse to find shelter and build a nasty
smelly nest.

Could your problem be from this airbox being comtaminated with critter

Just a thought, might be worth pulling the cover/screen/grill off and
having a look?

We have this thing called "The Constitution of the United States of
America" in which the Fourth Amendment states: "The right of the
people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects,
against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and
no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or
affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and
the persons or things to be seized."

Now that is not to say The Man cannot go to a willing judge and get a
warrant, but ideally your random cop should not be able to pull
something out of your car without the proper authorization. Of course,
the gummint is pummeling the 4th Amendment into something unrecognizable
to the Founding Fathers, but that is another discussion best not engaged
in here.

YMMV in other parts of the world.

On a W123, it in necessary to remove the center console, the
dash, and the entire HVAC plenum. Removing the front seats is
not required, but I found it helpful.

There otter be a law that heater cores be front and center on the firewall,
easily changed out from under the hood. Kind of like the wiper motor on a

It is probably leaking out the heat exchanger up in the duct work, some
pinhole leak or something. The only way to deal with that is to replace
the heat exchanger. Have fun.

I was driving one day in the fam's 67 Buick Skylark and sitting at a
light it started belching coolant down in the passenger footwell.
ruhroh. I pulled over somewhere, found a payphone and called my dad to
tell him and ask what was going on. He says the heater core is leaking,
needs to be replaced. Luckily I was just down the street from a pretty
good gas station/repair shop (we had no cell phones back then but
actually had gas station repair shops, imagine that!) so I drove it in,
my dad came to get me, they replaced the heater core for not much
money. It was actually pretty easy to get at them up under the glove
box, if you were something of a contortionist. I ended up changing one
in some other car I had, not a lot of fun but doable.

Some years ago I was at a trade show and IBM had this big machine set up
to do something. I got talking to one of the guys who was babysitting
it and he told me it would make books, you just tell it what book you
wanted and in a few minutes it would print it and bind it and spit it
out. So I picked some book they had stored in the computer, and it
proceeded to whir and make noises, and after a few minutes a brand-new
book rolls out the slot. I forget what book it was, it was a fairly new
novel, and was indistinguishable from one you buy at the store. Now of
course, there could have been a big stack of them in the machine, and
all the ceremony was just a show, but I think not. I think the machine
at the time cost like $300k.

Re: [MBZ] OT fedora server

2012-04-24 Thread Dieselhead

Thanks Ed, and all.

The consensus is to install the winders server or install it as a VM
on a lightweight host. Now all I need is time to git'er done.

The company closed, building was sold. New owner will be making
similar product so some info on the existing computers might be
useful, so it is good to keep that info available. Plan is to use
Acronis product to make an image of each existing desktop, Save to
dvd and server. Wipe drives, and do clean installs of XP and
software. On hearty enough machines, install VM with the old machine
restored with its image.

So far all I have managed to do is crack passwords and look at what
is there. Today I did the accounting machine. Being a manufacturing
business, this one computer was basically
the heat of the companies info. I found the administrator was
___ Yep, blank password. Wow! I am guessing someone else
already broke it.

I have seen lots of things that make it little wonder the business went under.

Plenty of people have pointed out SAMBA, and SAMBA makes a great drop in
replacement for a Windows SMB file server environment. However, I think
everyone has conveniently glossed over what you are actually asking for,
group policies.

I work for a medium business with multiple locations with an eclectic mix
of operating systems. I'm here to tell you that our Windows desktops talk
to a Windows server specifically for group policy reasons. Our *NIX
servers, regardless of what flavor, don't talk to the desktops directly.

GPO works via an implicit trust relationship between server and
workstation. *NIX has a lot of Windows networking replacement parts, but
there is no way to implement the implicit trust relationship that is
required to perform Active Directory group policy decisions. There *are*
ways to force them from *NIX, but they are all very cludgy.

To sum up, if you are installing this for a client that wants and Active
Directory trusted domain, install Windows Server and save yourself the
headache.

Did you try to short the middle, small terminal to the top, large
terminal on the starter solenoid with a big screwdriver?

If that fails, short the two large terminals on the solenoid together.

The heat exchanger is a small radiator filled with the same anti-freeze as your
engine. The mono-valve controls the flow of hot coolant to the heat exchanger.
The fan blows outside air across the heat exchanger and into the cabin.

Testing the heat exchanger is same as testing the radiator: pressurize the
entire system, and if the pressure drops, you have a leak.

Test YOUR theory by taking a sample of all the fluids from your car and heating
them up on your stove. If any of them are responsible for your smell, then
you'll know which system is leaking.

What is my prize? How about your vote for Mittens this fall?

Well, they're not leaking. I stil think this smell is generated from
a liiquid burning on a hot surface. Logically, it's either

1) an oil, PS or SLS fluid, or antifreeze leak under the hood that
emits a noxious smell when the engine warms up. The odor is somehow
drawn into the air intake. This seems unlikely because the rubber
gasket (seal) running across the top of the firewall is intact.

2) the air picks up the odor after encountering the WARM heat
exchanger. How exactly does the heat exchanger work anyway?

Good luck replacing that trim. I did both the anodized aluminum and the black

To get the aluminum trim on you have to fabricate a tool out of hardwood to
drive it in place.

A pretty exciting exercise, beating on this tiny piece of trim the length of

Thanks for your assistance, everyone -

Until I can get a helper (or get around to getting a voltmeter with CLIPS
rather than probes...) I can't do any of the while-cranking tests, but I've
definitely got power at the battery and at the starter.

Mr. Starter Switch tells me that the starter will turn, and that when I put
power to the solenoid it at least clicks, indicating that it's at least
electrically not-entirely-dead.

I suppose there's not much else I can test until I get a helper or a DVM
with clips. Long ones, so I can see the face while cranking. Or, yeah, a
helper. That'd be nice.

(I also notice I don't hear the starter motor operating
without-the-solenoid-engaged when I turn the key, which makes me suspect
it's a problem between the key and the starter, but again, can't confirm or
deny just now...)

Randy: Well, what's to say? She's a two-tone, brown over tan, with a bad
repaint on teh roof (mine, which I'll redo better this summer). The
interior's in bad cosmetic shape (cracked dash due to it being hard to put
back in after replacing the blower fan... which was a saga all its own),
with a recently re-padded and crack-welded driver's seat.
